Keep Mitt Romney away.

By Amanda Terkel on Apr 9th, 2007 at 3:18 pm

Keep Mitt Romney away.

“I’ve been a hunter pretty much all my life. I’ve never really shot anything terribly big. I used to hunt rabbits,” said former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. “Shooting a rabbit with a single-shot .22 is pretty hard, and after watching me try for a couple of weeks (my cousins) said, ‘We’ll slip you the semiautomatic. You’ll do better with that.’”

  20. Briseadh_na_faire says:

It is refreshing to see the First Lady flanked by symbols of a Pagan Goddess and participating in a Pagan Ritual. To think, all this time we believed that the Bush’s were beholden to the evangelicals.

    The Easter Bunny

The Easter Bunny is not a modern invention. The symbol originated with the pagan festival of Eastre. The goddess, Eastre, was worshipped by the Anglo-Saxons through her earthly symbol, the rabbit.

The Germans brought the symbol of the Easter rabbit to America. It was widely ignored by other Christians until shortly after the Civil War. In fact, Easter itself was not widely celebrated in America until after that time.

    The Easter Egg

As with the Easter Bunny and the holiday itself, the Easter Egg predates the Christian holiday of Easter. The exchange of eggs in the springtime is a custom that was centuries old when Easter was first celebrated by Christians.

From the earliest times, the egg was a symbol of rebirth in most cultures. Eggs were often wrapped in gold leaf or, if you were a peasant, colored brightly by boiling them with the leaves or petals of certain flowers.

I believe Mitt Romney has shot himself in the foot (as opposed to The Dick, Cheney, who shoots friends in the face. Once the people catch a candidate in a bold-faced lie, it’s O-V-E-R. In Mitt’s case, it’s over before it had time to even get off the ground. Bye Mitt! Another GOPig fool down the tubes.

  27. veritas says:

Actually, a more appropriate moniker for Laura might be “nut roll” instead of “egg roll” as, clearly, she has to be one herself to continue to live with one. Someone needs to remind Laura that we are judge by the company we keep.

MSM has made a mountain over a bunny hole. I must admit when I did some reading on the “bunny debacle” the critics seemed genuine. However, yesterday I watched the entire Q&A session on CSPAN in which Romney made the “hunter for pretty much all of my life” comment. Interestinlgy, instead, of walking away with the impression that the man was a liar, I left with the conviction that he should be the next U.S. President. Time and time again he has conducted Q&A sessions extemporaneously, practically all of his answers were logical, straightforward and dug at the heart of the issues. Inspite of what distracters may say Romney is by far the most intelligent and skilled orator between both the Dems and Repubs. The alleged “bunny debacle” was taken out of context and anyone who watches the entire session, those who he otherwise clealy have an ax to grind. Thanks again MSM your constant attack on Mitt you actually made me research the matter . . . It worked and now he has got my vote! Bye-the-way, what do you call rabbit shooting anyway . . . rabbit hunting?

    He wears a hunter’s shoes,
    And every Saturday evening,
    He reads the Hunter’s News.

  51. Harold says:

Last week, an AP report cited a Romney campaign staff member who mentioned two hunting trips that Romney had been on. However, the AP reporter unintentionally (or perhaps intentionally) presumed that these two hunting trips were the only two trips Romney had ever been on, appearing to contradict Romney’s prior claim of being a “life-long hunter.” Subsequently, several other media organizations cited the inaccurate AP report in order to accuse Romney of exaggerating the truth in order to win over voters. But on Friday, Romney stated without equivocation, “The report that I only hunted twice is incorrect. I’ve hunted small game numerous times, as a young man and as an adult. I’m by no means a big-game hunter. I’m more Jed Clampett than Teddy Roosevelt.”

I am amazed that the Associated Press can get away with this! The AP reporter was, at best, sloppy, and at worst, untruthful. Of course, the left-leaning media continues to focus on this AP report days after it was shown to be inaccurate in order to undermine Romney’s trustworthiness. Someone needs to hold this reporter and the Associated Press accountable. The media has an enormous influence on presidential politics. The media’s role in American democracy can be positive, as long as the media is careful and objective in its reporting.

  58. J-rock says:

    51 Zooey,

I make such flippant speculation with a sigh of despair, as in my heart of hearts, I am a Believer.

I once read a book called The Disappearance of God: A Divine Mystery by Richard Friedman. In it, he suggests that we no longer seem to see any sign of God anymore because He (or She) has withdrawn from us.

“And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith.” (Deut. 32:20)

    Maybe he was right.

But this leaves the prospect of a reckoning.

And I think many so-called “Christians” will like it no more than the “heathen”.

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law, justice and mercy and faith; these you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.

You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel! (Matt 23:23-24)

  79. American says:

Is this what our society has come too. We are talking about killing an individual who is running for President? Is this where politics is going in America? This world is increasingly becoming more scarry. I am freightened for my children and grand children. Hopefully, no one will shoot them for pursuing a dream.

Quite frankly, I am quite disappointed in Republicans, Democrats, and anyone else who bad mouths others. I believe the time will come when no one will want to run for office because their lives will be on the line if they do. Have we all become like little children relying upon the “mother land” to take care of our every little need, and if we don’t get our way, we through a royal fit as if we were spoiled?

Not only do I think we need to make changes in Washington. But, I also think we need some changes in the hearts and minds of the people in America. We only get the government we deserve. The founding Fathers of America made it quite clear the the Constitution was only for a civil people. The moment we get beyond civility is the moment we begin to lose the Constitution and all that has made America great. What we don’t need in politics is a bunch of people who are self interested at the expense of the good of the whole. The concept of public service seems to be dwindling significantly as politicians from any party establish an agenda that is for their own good.

Politics is no longer a science, but a strategy for personal gain. It is my opinion that only people who will accept no pay be allowed to run for political office. There should be no perks, no benefits. All of the political proceeds should be given to charities annually. People who run for public office should have a track record of charitable work and service in the private sector. There should be no real benefit to those who run other than the desire to serve others. Then, we will have a government worthy of a people with high moral values.

If you want to know what the value of a person is, it is in the service they render. It is what they do to improve the value of someone elses’ life. This is something that must be required by any leader. If it is not, then this nation is doomed to fall no matter what the political agenda!

  80. American says:

Incidentally, didn’t Christ make the comment that “He who is the greatest among you, let him be the servent of all.” He mentioned this to his twelve apostles. This concept would seem to be applicable for public service as well if there is such a thing.

  81. JPark says:

#77 There was that little thing about the camel and the eye of the needle too but the right picks and chooses what it wants to believe.

  82. A Patriot says:

Politics are a joke. However, Mitt is not. My vote is for him or Fred Thompson. Certainly not the left candidates who are so obsessed with glorifying themselves they have forgotten what America stands for.

  83. Hunter says:

So, if someone were born in the US and lived abroad, couldn’t they still call themselves American? While Romney may be short on actual hunting experience – that doesn’t mean that throughout his life he couldn’t identify with hunters. I grew up hunting all the time; now I live where hunting opportunities are readily available and haven’t actually hunted in years. I still consider myself a hunter. And I vote like a hunter!

  84. trippin says:

Would you look at the smile on Laura’s face? Looks like she just washed down a handful of Prozac with a quart of gin.

  85. DM says:

#79 Oh, this should be good. Do tell, what does America stand for?

  86. Willard Scott says:

Smear has been since Adam. It is meant as a means to bypass facts. Would the mud slingers of this column also list Christ as a wine bibber and a glutton and John as a finatic. If Mitt wasn’t the best, these jokers wouldn’t be so frantic about smearing him. You cannot even kill a rabbit by shooting your mouth. Maybe you could do better with Mitts 22.

  87. American says:

    JPark,

#77 The camel and the eye of a needle refers to the love of money not money itself. There is much good one can do with money, but making it something to worship above God is not acceptable. What Christ was talking about is the “eye of the needle was the gates to the city of Jerusalem, not a needle in reference to what you put yarn through. Incidentally, Fred said he would not run for president, he is taking Paul Harvey’s place with the “rest of the story.”

  88. Carol says:

Romney is no more nauseating in this hunting BS than Hillary was nauseating when she started sporting a Yankees cap. Didn’t you all want to puke at that? She probably did too.
This is no different and fair is fair.

  89. Roxanne says:

You libs get more ignorant with every post…don’t you ever get tired of thinking you’re so clever and then having to look at your “dumb puppy” mugs in the mirror? You all keep me laughing…thanks.

  90. Bruce Gorton says:

If we are going to use religious (Or semi-religious as I have yet to meet a Christian who actually takes what Jesus said about praying in public seriously) lets go for the stuff that is at least reasonably pretty:

Tao Te Ching verse 17: Leaders.

When the Master governs, the people
are hardly aware that he exists.
Next best is a leader who is loved.
    Next, one who is feared.
The worst is one who is despised.

If you don’t trust the people,
    you make them untrustworthy.

The Master doesn’t talk, he acts.
    When his work is done,
    the people say, “Amazing:
we did it, all by ourselves!”

  91. NoOneYouKnow says:

It’s interesting that it was the AP that started this. Usually they smear Democrats.

  92. American says:

#86 – So far, America stands for itself, if anything! Then, the rest of the world. Don’t get me wrong, my family has been American since the pilgrims came here. I love this country. But, politics is so terrible that it is not a wonder to me why college students don’t participate in it more. America has been known as the “melting pot” of the world, a people searching for understanding and acceptance for different cultures. Yet, politics absolutely demonstrates just how closed people are to different cultures. Today, we have presidential candidates who have a Mormon Heritage, Muslim Heritage, Chirstian Heritage, etc. some who believe one way and others who believe another. But, no one who truly represents every segment of the American society…Democrat or Republican.

Today, we have the Democrats who seem to believe that we are all bumbling idiots. So, we have to have really smart people in Washington to figure out everything and tell us the direction we should go in before someone gets hurt. The Republicans on the other hand, suggest that the people are the strength of America and that everyone is capable of managing their own lives without the need for a large central government.

People need to understand that politics by definition is the science of compromise. A political candidate will compromise on lower priority initiatives in order to move higher priority initiatives along. Priorities and initiative sellability is the strategy of the day in politics.
If a president needs to move a higher priority law into place at the cost of a lower priority law in order for the higher one to succeed, then they will.

  93. American says:

I sincerely believe that politics is a strong measuring rod to acceptance of different cultures in America. These cultures include: Mormonism, Muslims, Divorce, Plural Marriage, Christians, Jews, etc. Like many other Americans have many different heritages: American, British, German, Irish, Scottish, Italian, Greek, French, Cherokee Indian, etc. The list goes on. The positions people take shows just how discriminating we all are. If we really want to get away from discrimination, then our politics will represent it. Don’t you think so?

  94. American says:

So, What is your discriminating gripe about today?
