McCain Claims Sadr ‘Not Contesting American Forces’ As Sadr Loyalists Rally Against U.S.»

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), 4/8/07:

“Extremist Shiite militia leader Moqtada al-Sadr is in hiding, his followers are not contesting American forces”

Muqtada al-Sadr, 4/9/07:

“‘You, the Iraqi army and police forces, don’t walk alongside the occupiers, because they are your archenemy,’ the al-Sadr statement said. He urged his followers not to attack fellow Iraqis but to turn all their efforts on American forces. ‘God has ordered you to be patient in front of your enemy, and unify your efforts against them - not against the sons of Iraq,’ the statement said.”

Sadr has called a rally today where “hundreds of thousands of Shia protesters have burned and trampled on US flags in the Iraqi holy city of Najaf.” Despite McCain’s claim that Sadr is not “contesting” the U.S. occupation, here are some images from the rally that prove otherwise:

UPDATE: On Saturday, Reuters reported, “Iraqi and U.S. forces clashed with Shi’ite militia loyal to the radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr on Friday in a dawn operation aimed at returning the volatile city of Diwaniya to government control.”

Just one more example of how out of touch McCain is. He may be more out of touch than Bush! Our troops may soon be surrounded and have no way out the country.

Whats the difference with this lunatic?:

McCain must get his intel from Fox News. I guess he reads as much as GW does.

He needs to be driven from the presidential race so people see this blatant propaganda for what it is. As long as he is allowed to spew these lies those 30 percenters will be able to spin this insane war as a necessary, winnable “war on terror.”

Look at those silly Muslims! They placed the flag upside down before they stomped on it!

So basically they are stomping the backside of the flag. Is this symbolic for “kicking [stomping] our asses?”

  10. joe Says:

The Republicans need to Ess Tea Eff Ewe.

Every time they point to something as a success in Iraq, it blows up. Remember bush talking about Tall Afar? A few days later, massive terror strike against Shiite civilians, followed by revenge killings. Remember how safe McCain said the marketplace was? Two days later, a couple dozen merchants murdered in the streets.

If I was an Iraqi, and a Republican state rep from Wyoming said my house looked nice, I’d recreate the scene from the Amityville Horror where they pile into the van and leave with just the clothes on their backs.

Shut. Up. You’re getting people killed with your happy talk.

You know, it almost seems as if this administration views “the big lie” as some sort of Dumbo’s magic feather or super toy. They love it. They have seen it work in so many situations over the past 6 years that they think it’s fail proof. We’ve let them play with it and beat us over the head with it. But now, they’ve truly lost it. They don’t realize that their is a limit……and that the American people have caught on. They just keep pulling out the toy chest and waving that feather. I can’t wait till they finally truly get what they deserve.

  12. Kate Henry Says:

Gawd, he is so pitiful. I watched as much of 60 Minutes last night as I could stomach and I have to say that McCain came across as a doddering old fool. And, he never answered the questions the 60 minutes guy was asking him. Every time the guy asked a question McCain would get this sly smile on his face and would spout one of his many talking points, totally ignoring the question he was asked. It was surreal. At least 60 Minutes showed what the market he visited really looked like. The only people there were the shop keepers, McCains group and lots and lots of American soldiers, not one Iraqi soldier. Remember when his Republic buddy said that it was just like his market in Indiana? Wow, I would hate to see that market if they needed hundreds of soldiers surrounding them before they could walk down the aisles. McCain has become a joke. He just doesn`t get it.

Sadr is part of the Iraqi government and their own constitution proclaims them as an Islamic theocracy. The Sunnis ruled over the Shia for 35 years under Hussein, now the Shia want revenge. The Shia are the majority, but the Sunnis are the most educated with the most experience in government, thanks again to Hussein. The Sunnis also have the full financial backing of Saudi Arabia (lots of money) and the backing of the US, although most of the ones that we are supporting now were Ba’athist 4 years ago. Militarily, Sadr has the Mehdi Army, but the Sunnis have the backing of al-Qaeda.

  28. Chris L Says:

There are some interesting commonalities between recent US involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. When we initially went into Afghanistan we removed the Taliban from power. Now they are negotiating with the Afghan government and we are seeing a resurgence of Taliban law. With Iraq, we initially removed the Sunnis from power, now we are trying to put them back in.

  31. trippin Says:

First he claims he can walk the streets of Baghdad unarmored and unguarded. “Oooopsie! I have fun when I make egregious errors involving death and maiming.” Now McCain claims al Sadr isn’t contesting American forces, meanwhile, the dude put out a jihad specifically on their very ass.

McCain literally sounds more out of touch with reality than the shrimp boat’s mate who’s now occupying 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. This dizzy bastard wants to be Commander in Chief after six years and counting of having a baseball card clipped in the spokes of the Presidential bicycle? I don’t think so, Johnny.

    Comment by jeff — April 9, 2007 @ 11:05 am

This is the main reason why I am against the Iraq Occupation. I served for over a year in Baghdad, and we did everything that needed to be done 3 years ago. We should have left then. We do not know who the enemy is or have any type of clear military goal. We oppose the Shiites, because Iran supports them. Bush wants the Sunnis back in power because Saudi favors them, and Saudi has the money. What we are doing is worse than “policing a civil war”, we are trying to influence a civil war in BOTH directions, which is a catastrophe waiting to happen.
BTW, you may have been labeled a “troll” by Zooey, and I may not completely agree with you on all things, but I’ll take you over “Patrick the Firehead” anyday - ;>)

  36. joe Says:

    Chris L,

If we had left 3 years ago, what would have happened? Iraq would be governed by a Shiite dictator allied with Iran; or Sunni fundies would have gotten snuggle with al Qaeda like in Afghanistan; or the country collapses into civil war and the neighbors all set up shop; or a combination of all three.

None of those things is worth what it took to overthrow Saddam - especially if you count the opportunity cost of pulling resources our of Afghanistan. The only possible way this war would have been worth it is if we had actually achieved the “Freedom, Democracy, and a Pony” shtick of the neconservatives’ fantasies, and staying there and “fixing” the political culture of the oldest place on the face of the earth was, allegedly, necessary to achieve that.

Gad, what a freaking mess. Remember when the hawks used to say “You predicted a quagmire!” to demonstrate their superior understanding?

So we have stayed, and all three things that you just mentioned have happened. Hence why I support withdrawing troops, if we stay or go the country will continue on its same path regardless of our presence there (or lack thereof). The only difference is how many Americans die in the process.

If not for his execution of his policies, definitely for his ideology.

I post here now to do one thing, to get progs to be more critical of Jihadists. Otherwise I really only care about civil liberties here at home. You people need to relax.

  44. Lana Says:

War isn’t the single answer to how we establish a stable Iraq. What if we went in as humanitarians instead of war mongers? We need to think of alternative solutions to the problem. Poverty is the catalyst to created terrorists and militants. Eliminating the growth sites for such terrible things would reduce the need for immediate military action. It would also, be less expensive and possibly even make money. As those who are impoverished move out of poverty and begin to develop all nations involved could begin to profit in a healthy, sustainable way.

Sadr knows exactly what progressives are. He may know you by your former titles, though: Communists, Pinko Liberals, Socialists, etc. Enemies of the U.S. have always known they can count on lefties to help them out.

Iraqi’s have even more freedom than we do! Can’t you see that? It’s right there in the pictures. Even we can’t burn and trample the American flag. …”

Were you unaware that you could have been burning the flag of the nation that gives you the right to post your opposition here? Have you missed all the news photos of slimeball American citizens burning our flag? Well, run right out and buy several to make up for lost opportunities. You are free to do so. See, Iraqi’s don’t have more freedom than you after all. And you are unlikely to be shot or have your home destroyed while you are out, another plus.

When did McCain join the neocons? For someone who spent time as a prisoner of war, and tortured, one would think he would be in total opposition to war and the administrations’ sanctioning of state sponsored torture.

Like most Americans, McCain believes that, despite the horrors of war, there are some things worth fighting for. I disagree with McCain about staying in Iraq, though. I believe we should have gotten out at least a year ago. Perhaps the U.S. needs a new policy regarding terrorists. Since we don’t want to lose American lives, but the terrorists refuse to leave us in peace, maybe we should just put them on notice that every attack on us, our interests, or our allies will result in air assalts on terrorist training grounds around the world. We will make every attempt to match the terrorists with their atrocities, but if we are unsure which terrorists are responsible, we will just choose one arbitrarily. A terrorist is a terrorist is a terrorist, right? And who can argue with attacks on terrorists? By definition, they are hurting innocent people. We are just punishing them for crimes they committed but have gotten away unpunished.

The argument over weather we should leave Iraq is really moot. We attacked a soveriegn country who had no weapons of mass destruction. Bush wanted to go down in history as a wartime occupier of the oval office. The 26,000 dead and wounded troops should never have happened. Those 19 and 20 year old young men should be alive today.

But due to lying, doctoring intelligence and drawing his lap dog Blair to agree with him, We are in a world of hurt. Should we leave? I say yes and immediately. Bush and his neocon’s had no clue of thehistoryand culture of any middle eastern country. We were not attacked, Saadam was lying and Bush was sucking it up.

The election of 2000 was stolen by a Male cheerleader and kool aid drinker who deserted his post in wartime in Alabama and got away with it. No physicals please– you might find the coke in his system. This country cannot take another nineteen months of the “chimp” and he should be impeached immediately!!!!!

According to some scources, Bush is no longer on kool aid, but has went back to the hard stuff. Living in a bubble, ignoring the will of the American people, with an approval rating near freezing, He and Five deferment Cheney are ripe for plucking and this Democratic Congress should go after him in a more agressive manner.

    IMPEACH, IMPEACH, IMPEACH!!!!!!
