CNN’s Barbara Starr reports, “The Pentagon today, as we speak, is reviewing a request from commanders in Iraq for the extension of the tour of duty for up to 15,000 Army troops. four combat ground brigades. One combat aviation brigade. their tours might be extended up to 120 days. Why? Because the Pentagon has to find a way to keep that so-called troop surge going.”

Big shock here

April 9th, 2007 at 4:21 pmIraq has oil reserves that are estimated at over 300 billion barrels, making the country the world leader in this sphere, the Iraqi oil minister said Saturday.
In his interview with the Lebanese Al Mashrik newspaper, Hussain al-Shahristani did not specify, though, whether this figure referred to confirmed oil reserves or to a general estimate.
According to official data, Iraq’s confirmed oil reserves total about 112 billion barrels and the country has another 200 bln barrels in undiscovered reserves.
Saudi Arabia is considered the current global leader in confirmed oil reserves with 262 bln barrels, followed by Iraq (112 bln barrels) and Venezuela (about 80.8 bln barrels).
The Iraqi minister also said that his country could export up to 1.9 million barrels of oil per day, but the current unstable situation in Iraq, especially frequent terrorist acts at oil production and transportation facilities freeze the export level at 1.6 million bbl/d.
April 9th, 2007 at 4:21 pmThis is totally amoral!
April 9th, 2007 at 4:25 pmTroop surge = Funeral dirge.
April 9th, 2007 at 4:26 pmGood. Troops that don’t want their tours extended shouldn’t volunteer to be in the Army.
April 9th, 2007 at 4:28 pmUh, you guys are getting off topic. This war is not about resources, it’s about freedom and liberty.
(The freedom to steal the oil and take our liberties on the Iraqi and American public - har har har)
Did I say that out loud?
Regardless, look over there! Brown people that we must kill so that they will be liberated. Just not the Saudis, by the way.
April 9th, 2007 at 4:29 pmThis is precisely why we need a change in Washington… away from the neocons that don’t speak with their enemies. If Bush would speak and negotiate with our enemies, this war would never have happened.
I’m supporting Bill Richardson for president. He has the experience. He just negotiated the release of American remains from North Korea. Here’s the article:

This is so incredible…. During the Vietnam years we did not do this or send our troops back for 3rd and 4th tours of duty to that mess we also created over lies. One reason Vietnam came to an end is our troops began to “bulk”…. and what can one do when the masses develop an attitude? Extended tours of duty, multiple tours of duty to the hell hole, crappy VA care when and if they do get back - when does the attitude begin?????
April 9th, 2007 at 4:30 pm#12,
You’re waxing nostalgically for the Vietnam war because that was the “good ol’ days” of engaging in genocide and calling it a “war”?
Boy, you can’t be far from rock bottom.
April 9th, 2007 at 4:38 pmIt’s a shame that the troops suffer for the administration’s incompetence.
April 9th, 2007 at 4:38 pmSend Jenna and Barbra Bush, they aren’t doing anything productive with their lives right now.
April 9th, 2007 at 4:38 pmWhat a bunch of wussy complainers. Whaaa! I don’t want my tour extended! They sound like a bunch of draft dodging hippies.
April 9th, 2007 at 4:39 pmI was wondering about the statistics for Vietnam and Iraq… how many died vs how many were wounded. And then I found the numbers in my local newspaper (how timely).
The number of American deaths in Vietnam were approximately either 54,000 or 56,000, can’t quite remember the number. The number of American deaths in Iraq close to 3300.
Here is the ratio of deaths/wounded:
Vietnam: 1 death to 2.6 wounded
Iraq: 1 death to 16.0 wounded
The Iraq numbers are astounding because more of our military are surviving because of advanced medical technology that wasn’t available during Vietnam.
So, do the math… if it wasn’t for these advancements, we would quickly be approaching the number of deaths per American per year as in Vietnam.
And boy Bush stated that he will veto the bill that will provide more funding for our returning wounded veterans.

Kinda weak strawman, Ho. Is that the best you can do?
April 9th, 2007 at 4:50 pmThe troops like extended tours of duty. That’s why they vote Republican.
April 9th, 2007 at 4:54 pmJake, you need to be in Iraq too.
Shut up and sign up.
April 9th, 2007 at 4:56 pmHey Patrick, What’s your #? I have some recruiter friends that will want to call and enlist you right away.
April 9th, 2007 at 4:58 pmFYI, I voulenteered to join the military, so I don’t have any reason to complain. That does not, however, mean I wan to be EXTENDED in iraq after I’ve already been there 12 out of the last 34 months. You are a tool….
Jake,
why are you still here you gutless lying weasel?
April 9th, 2007 at 4:58 pm“The troops like extended tours of duty. That’s why they vote Republican.

Take your LYING A$$ over thier and fight for YOUR cause!!!!
This way you really can list a “war” on your military record, instead of stealing a REAL war hero’s history to make yourself feel good.
April 9th, 2007 at 4:59 pm#22,
Merely pointing out the irony. Who would have ever thought that we would look back on Vietnam as being the “better” example of how to engage in a war based on lies, deception, and evil?
April 9th, 2007 at 4:59 pmGood. Troops that don’t want their tours extended shouldn’t volunteer to be in the Army.

Geez, your stupidity knows no boundaries. You are a consumate A*SHOLE!!!!
April 9th, 2007 at 5:02 pmReal troops want their tours extended.
April 9th, 2007 at 5:05 pmgoehl I understand your frustration with the junta but let’s not get all nostalgic about Viet Nam era. In 1969 the active Army had about 1.5 million men the current active Army is half that size. They also had a nearly inexhaustable supply of men thanks to the draft. Despite that career military men still served multiple tours in Viet Nam. Both of my ROTC instructors had two tours each. And crappy VA care ask a Viet NAm vet about the post Viet Nam VA. No one wnated to think about vets then and no one was concerned about funding their needs.
And Viet Nam came to an end because middle class white men and women (mostly women)in the US began to balk not the troops.
April 9th, 2007 at 5:05 pmSupport our troops and stop bashing the President.
April 9th, 2007 at 5:21 pmA real army wants to fight indefinately, they are honed killing machines that can’t do anything else besides kill. So let them do it.

But YOU don’t know anything about a “real army”!
You LYING sack of Bush!!!!
When you actually join and serve, rather than stealing a real Vets military record, then you can speak of what “a real army” is about!!!!
Until then….. STFU!!!!!
April 9th, 2007 at 5:29 pmIs there anyone who still believes all the Bushit that hasn’t enlisted? I would have enlisted five years ago if I thought it was really a life struggle against some group and/or government. Actions speak louder than words, and as much as some people talk about this ‘war’ like it’s the only way, yada, yada, yada, there shouldn’t be any stories about extended rotations and failing to meet recruitment quota and all that.
I think that most of the remaining supporters, somewhere deep down, realize that it’s all BULLSHIT or else the stories about the army would be about how long the lines are at the recruiting office.
April 9th, 2007 at 5:32 pmMerely pointing out the irony. Who would have ever thought that we would look back on Vietnam as being the “better†example of how to engage in a war based on lies, deception, and evil?
Comment by Nappy-headed Ho Chi Minh —
This is too weird… no one is looking back comparing the 2 US led invasions we call/called war… My point is history, a bad history has repeated….. and will the outcome become the same. Will our soldiers begin to “bulk” as they did during Vietnam, which is one reason the ‘war’ came to an end.
April 9th, 2007 at 5:37 pmDo the trolls here even know the meaning of “bulk” “history” ….?
This report by CNN is all the more reason for veterans groups like Veterans for Peace to give out copies of Sir! No Sir! to these soldiers, so they can acknowledge that they have a brain and, like the soldiers in Sir! No Sir!, who said NO to that illegal war in Vietnam, will likewise say NO to this illegal and immoral war in Iraq.

April 9th, 2007 at 8:28 pmIt must be namejacking—not as pervertedly sincere as the real Jake and Patrick. They should have registration on TP.
April 9th, 2007 at 8:36 pm#43 I think that Jake has made about 3 posts in the last week but his name has popped up as a poster about 100 times. It is pathetic. If you are going to satirize do it in 3rd person. I agree, they need registration.

Stop-loss is not voluntary service doofus. If anything it keeps people from joining.
BTW when are you gonna get off your whiny 101st Keyboard brigade chickenhawk butt and go volunteer for your dear leader and his quagmire?
April 9th, 2007 at 9:39 pmHey Patrick, so you support 5th tours of duty, right? You have just proven you have never been in the service, you lying sack.
April 9th, 2007 at 9:42 pmLet us review Jake’s career:
He worked as a crash dummy for the NASA Rocket Sled program.
After each time he crashed into a 16 meter thick granite barrier at orbital speeds, they would scrape his brains off of the base of the sled into a bucket, turn him upside down, put a funnel into each nostril and pour them back in.
He sloshes when he nods or shakes his head. The kind of sound that you hear when you shake up a container of orange juice or paint thinner.
Every once in a while, in the past, the air relief valve at the back of Jake’s head
malfunctioned and a little grey matter dripped out. That has not reoccurred since November, 2006.
Jake’s golden retriever has entered some posts when he (Jake, not the dog) passed out. On those occasions, the posts seem more rational, hence the apparent schizoid behavior.
Jake had a brain scan in December, 2006 - they found nothing.

April 9th, 2007 at 10:12 pmI did jack Jake’s name for a couple posts on this thread. Sorry.
April 9th, 2007 at 10:17 pmTP really does need to get registration.
April 9th, 2007 at 10:19 pm#53 Aww, FT, don’t do that. I usually know who is trolling but it is embarrasing to people that are attacking your fake troll.

April 10th, 2007 at 5:35 pmHmmmm… Imagine that!!!!! I don’t see them spending mutiple tours, much less 15 months in Iraq.
April 11th, 2007 at 8:10 pmAs I write this during my 17th month of duty straight in Iraq, I’m both sickened and grateful for many of the comments on this blog. Many are just bred out of complete ignorance, as what’s reported on CNN by armchair analysts usually couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, I’m impressed when they get just about anything right. On one hand, it’s great that we live in a society where people can voice even the most ignorant opinions. On the other, I’m embarrassed by my generation.
Go ahead - call me a right winged and enjoy your sushi and beer. I can live with myself that instead of complaining about the government and what I would do if ‘President for a Day’, I’m actually involved and doing some good from inside the system.
April 12th, 2007 at 5:58 ambeen in the army for over three years. spend 10 months for the frist tour and on my 7th month on my secound. do the math. thats about half my army carea over iraq. i had four months left, now i am extended. seen friends blow their heads off because of fmily issures that couldn’t been solved over here. and couldn’t go back to fix them. seen friends get blown up. but i am over here doing my job. patrick this hole bulshit you wrote, “Good.
