Federal panel altered report on voter fraud.

“A federal panel responsible for conducting election research played down the findings of experts who concluded last year that there was little voter fraud around the nation,” the New York Times reports. “Instead, the panel, the Election Assistance Commission, issued a report that said the pervasiveness of fraud was open to debate. The revised version echoes complaints made by Republican politicians, who have long suggested that voter fraud is widespread and justifies the voter identification laws that have been passed in at least two dozen states.”

  4. Krazny says:

I don’t like the republicans much, but I believe, that our system needs to be as free of possible corruption as possible. Frankly we show ID for almost everything, so the idea of showing at least a state issued ID does not bother me. I believe keeping the even a small incidence of voter fraud, and other such problems should not exist. We need to be able to trust the democratic process in our elections.

  5. JPark says:

#4 You are buying into the right-wing fiction that voter fraud is real. It is a myth. The only reason the ID is an issue is because the righties don’t want the poor to vote. Plain and simple.

  6. Zooey says:

    Krazny,

Personally, I think if there’s voter fraud going on at all, it’s not by those who might have trouble with the ID issue, it’s the people in charge of the voting machines, with an agenda.

Requiring ID is hardly a poll tax and when I worked determining eligibility for welfare, Medicaid, and Food Stamps, ID was required. The exit polls before then were a fairly accurate indicator of who the winner would be. And yes I’m sure some people don’t like exit polls but they were fairly accurate even then.

The problem today is with the Diebold machines which are based on Windows CE, and as with Windows many security holes exist. Diebold also went with a closed source software to supposedly prevent hacking, but Windows is a closed source system written in C++ which is not secure (as Java would be)

Australia uses an open source code software for their votiing machines. Open source software has proven to be more secure than closed source software.

  169. Zep Tepi says:

As I recall Michael, Bush said we would stand down as they (Iraqis) stand up. Isn’t that then a form of redeployment? And isn’t redeployment just a euphemism for cut and run?

IE they were not worried about security as they were the oil law. If that’s so Michael then as soon as the oil law is signed we should, according to Bakler Hamilton start removing our troops.

DO NOT PRESUME TO PUT WORDS IN MY MOUTH!

I agree that we need to have accountability over the government’s running of the process. Lately we have had Republican Secretaries of State also serving as Republican Campaign Managers and using electronic machines built by Republican Manufactures, machines which have no way of verifying their accuracy.

I would say that those facts pose a greater risk of “voter fraud” then presuming a poor person who stands in line over 6 hours at a stretch is going to vote multiple times.

Instead of having voters produce ID’s, why don’t we use the Iraqi system and use purple dye. Only, to reflect our current sad state of affairs, I suggest using the finger next to the index finger instead.

Why are none of these alterations prosecuted as crimes. I would see no issue with the administration issuing a cover letter outlining what they think are objectionable claims in the report but the report itself should be left alone. Pluse we have seen this same pattern used over and over again.

Just think if drug companies were allowed to alter the data in their clinical studies in order to get FDA approval. Same thing.

Yesterday it was also revealed that the Defense Department photo shopped pictures of the anti-American demonstrations in Najaf, Iraq to make the crowd look about 1/5 the size it actually was. Defense Secretary Gates has some ’splaining to do.

As this pattern of altering data grows ever wider it calls into question whether other data is being altered and we just don’t yet know about it. Data, for instance, on the economy as nothing seems to be off-limits.

  224. veritas says:

Instead of investigating the miniscule amount of individual voter fraud, let’s get to the real “meat and potatoes” of the election situation instead of being scammed into believing that our election machinery is not flawed in itself. Let’s get to the bottom of the hacked machines. Let’s get to the bottom of the two “stolen elections” and the responsible parties. Let’s have a look-see into Jeb Bush & Katherine Harris and their co-conspirators in the 2000 election which robbed Al Gore of the presidency. Let’s look at how this same gang of criminals hacked into the Ohio Diebold machinery….with the help of Ken Blackwell, head of Bush/Cheney04 while serving as Ohio’s State Sup. of Elections….a bit of a “conflict of interest”?? I’d say it was a clear “set up” for collusion and conspiracy to violate people’s constitutional right to vote.

Now that’s the real “voter fraud” which needs to be investigated and not the “smokescreen issue” which this set of circumstances is being ginned up to obscure the real problem from the people.

Our voting machines definitely ARE NOT safe! Our voting machines are proven to be hackable and have been hacked. We cannot go into the election of 08 with blinders on, folks.

Do your homework and get the facts. Become informed. Go to http://www.blackboxvoting.org to see what the Harri Hursti Hack proved. Watch the new HBO documentary entitled: “Hacking Democracy”. Google up some of the pertinent experiments, known testimony from people asked by the GOP (specifically Jeb) to hack machines…it’s all out there.

Before anyone stands on long lines in 08, we need to press this congress for complete and unequivocal election reform in the shape of returned (for full restitution) machinery to Diebold, E S & S, and Sequoia and a demand for paper trail voting which does NOT go through an Opti-Scanner which is a farce because the Opti Scanner has software in it which is hackable as well.

Sometimes regression (back to hand-counted paper ballots) is not a bad thing! And, in this case, it’s beginning to look like “the only thing” left to secure the integrity of our voting system and the vote of each individual.

Be not sidetracked by discussion of petty voter fraud; the much larger issue is STILL (after all these years) our hackable and already-hacked voting machinery.

  225. veritas says:

Of course, we probably cannot afford to revamp our election system because it costs money and we’re going bankrupt….Iraq = The Giant Hole Into Which We Are Pouring Our Money which will ultimately tank this country.

  226. veritas says:

Also go to http://www.bradblog.com for a daily update on the massive amount of yet-unresolved hardware problems with this machinery, the documentation of voting machine fraud, etc. It’s all there. If you can read, you need to do this before wasting your time standing on lines to vote in 08! Cynically, the winner of 08 may be the one who puts the hack in last….hahaha!

  227. veritas says:

And we all know what happened when we went to bed in 2000 believing that Al Gore was our next President – He did win the popular vote, as we all know. Well, in Florida, the worker bees went to work while we all slept and even rigged the exit polls so they would be consistent with the stolen election in Florida. Now it happens in Ohio that election workers have given testimony and have been indicted for rigging the hardware so things are dribbling out, slowly but surely….there’s so much more to come on this.

  228. veritas says:

Linda Lamone, Maryland’s State Sup. of Elections, may have to put her money where her mouth is in that Maryland has banned the use of non-paper trail voting hardware. Lamone stated that they would return to paper ballots “over her dead body”….well, Linda….??

  231. Kate Henry says:

“Really? Maybe you can tell us what you learned in your 6th grade political correctness class today?”

What exactly does “political correctness” have to do with the Republics stealing elections by hacking voting machines and rigging the results? How many times can a poll show a Democrat ahead by 4% and then the Republic wins by 4%. If you don’t believe there is a problem here, go to blackboxvoting.org and be prepared to be horrified at what we have done to our voting system. Thomm Hartman has it right when he says that the day privatize our system of voting is the day we lose democracy (or something close to that).

I wonder how many people know that Canada instituted a system for voting on a computer and very quickly saw the error of their ways and went back to paper ballots.
