PBS’s Gwen Ifill speaks out on Imus.

By Nico Pitney on Apr 10th, 2007 at 9:43 am

PBS’s Gwen Ifill speaks out on Imus.

ifill.jpgIfill, whom Don Imus once called a “cleaning lady cover[ing] the White House,” writes in the New York Times:

Every time a young black girl shyly approaches me for an autograph or writes or calls or stops me on the street to ask how she can become a journalist, I feel an enormous responsibility. It’s more than simply being a role model. I know I have to be a voice for them as well.

So here’s what this voice has to say for people who cannot grasp the notion of picking on people their own size: This country will only flourish once we consistently learn to applaud and encourage the young people who have to work harder just to achieve balance on the unequal playing field.

Let’s see if we can manage to build them up and reward them, rather than opting for the cheapest, easiest, most despicable shots.

UPDATE: Al Roker: “It’s time for [Imus] to go.

  1. Kay says:

Gwen is one classy lady. Take note : Ann Coulter.

  2. old hack says:

Imus makes a living being rude. He was making a joke about how tough the girls looked. it wasnt racially motivated. This has all been blown out of proportion. the wannabes vs the jiggaboos is from spike lee. We all need to take a deep breath and grow up a little. If the PC police have their way we will be the most humorless nation in the world.

  3. chris says:

yup – Gwen is classy; but Imus does a damn good job as well. The media needs to move on and back the hell off of him & let him do his job. In reality, nobody cares what he said.

  4. Raven says:

It’s long overdue for networks to discipline their media personalities for insulting and degrading comments.
A simple two week suspension doesn’t go far enough.

  5. Kay says:

I guess you make a living being rude, too?

  6. old hack says:

also can you name one single other broadcaster with 10,000,000 listerners thats said “Bush and CHeney should be hung for war crimes” on air?

  7. pete says:

Gwen Ifill will be a credible journalist as soon as she stops having private dinners with Condi Rice. She’s too chummy with the people of whom it is her job to be critical.

  8. Raymond Funamoto says:

GWEN IFILL–ONE HELL OF A CLASSY LADY AND A CLASS ACT—-CondomLesser Rice, TAKE NOTE, RATHER COPIOUS NOTES ON HOW TO BE A ROLE MODEL AND NOT A JABBERING VENTRILOQUIST’S DUMMY FOR Bushland Uber Allies!!!!! THE ONLY CLEANING GWEN DID WAS Imus’ CLOCK WITH HER ELEGANCE, CLASSINESS AND SHEER PRESENCE!!!!! HAH!!!!!

  9. Michael says:

gwen’s certainly taking the high road here, which is surely the most effective way to skewer a guy like imus. still, it isn’t quite fair to compare the rutgers team to shy young black girls. women’s hoops at the top of the ncaa is big business, not quite as professional and rough as the men’s side, but still, moving in that direction. as darlings of the new york media (scrappy underdogs) you’d think they’d be able to better cope with whatever gratuitous insults come their way. lord knows, it isn’t as if tennessee’s pat summit hasn’t taken her share of abuse (vicious bitch, etc) along with the living legend reputation she’s built over the years.

  10. Chauncey Gardner says:

Gwen has sold us all down the river by shilling for the right for the past 6 years. All of the so called PBS and NPR journalists should be very proud of the fine job they all have done in cheerleading the neo-cons as they totally destroy American democracy. Edward R Murrow would be very proud of your courage Gwen.

  11. bob (not the hacker) says:

“If the PC police have their way we will be the most humorless nation in the world.”

1- if you can’t be funny without insulting someone else, someone who has less power than you do, you’re not funny, you’re a bully.

2-Quit hiding behind the “PC police” chliche, unless you defended Bill Mahar when he said the 9-11 hijackers were many things, but they wern’t cowards.

  12. Rocks911 says:

It tells me something that the cript keeper (Imus) feels he should apoligize.

  13. Juan C says:

Let’s see if we can manage to build them up and reward them, rather than opting for the cheapest, easiest, most despicable shots.

    KABOOM!!!

  14. shmimus says:

i sometimes suspect that the biggest audience of people like imus, coulter, etc. are the very people offended by their, how should i say, stupid comments. i say just ignore them and eventually their sponsors will stop funding them. really, could you imagine the look on ann coulter’s face if she called john edwards a faggot and there was nary a peep from any blog or news site? how long do you think it would take her fans to figure out she’s marginalized? okay, maybe not her fans, but everyone else.

  15. DemocraticSycamore says:

I, too, believe that this whole thing is being blown out of proportion. I think the two week suspension is fine. Think of Imus’s audience. Is it really a group that will care that he said “nappy-headed hos”? I doubt it, if only that his listeners gotta be about 180 yrs old. Is Imus really appealing to anyone under the age of 40? I know his excuse is that his show is a ‘comedy’ show, but that doesn’t hold because he’s not funny, nor are all the other water-carriers in his production. Who cares what this guys says? I just can’t imagine he has a big audience. I’ve listened to him several times and every time he speaks it’s all about how great Don Imus is. I don’t see it. The guy sucks. Who cares. And Jesse Jackson and Al Sharton are the types of guys that will blow things out of proportion for the media coverage about issues they care about. It’s the same with the NRA. Is the government going to take this liberal redneck’s shotgun away because there’s a desire to keep handguns off the streets of the nation’s capitol? No, but the NRA doesn’t want me to think that. Sharpton and Jackson use the same playbook. Imus is past his prime. Who cares…

  16. Rocks911 says:

    bob (not the hacker),

    Right on, nicely put!

  17. Zooey says:

Ifill’s response to Imus was classy and sharp-witted. I like that in a girl. The cozy dinners with Condi are concerning, though.

Why so much focus on Imus on this thread? Have I missed something?

  18. pgw says:

“as darlings of the new york media (scrappy underdogs)”

while i applaud your attempt at fusing repub talking points ["the media's to blame" + "northeastern elitists"], you’re obviously not from around the ny metro area if you think that this [or any] rutgers team were the “darlings of the new york media.” and because someone’s from newark means you should be able to call them names? dumb.

  19. Raven says:

    I-mus be kwazy….

  20. hil says:

i love her! Most definatley one of my idols

  21. Steve Hendricks says:

“Blown out of proportion?” I don’t think so. In this particular case Imus and his producer didn’t insult public figures, people who promote themselves either to further a particular agenda or their own careers. They insulted a group of teenagers who came to the attention of the public only because they were outstanding student athletes. For those who believe that Imus’ comments should be ignored or chalked up to his First Amendment right to express bad taste, try putting yourself in the place of an 18 y/o female basketball player trying to maintain her academic standing in the face of a demanding athletic schedule across both semesters. Imus deserves every bit of condemnation he has received. And more.

  22. Badmoodman says:

I don’t believe in censorship in any form so I don’t agree with Sharpton, Jackson, et al. Speech is supposed to be free, not sane or enlightening. Let the market take care of Imus. On another note though, how can the FCC fine CBS/Viacom millions for a bare nipple momentarily exposed on network TV, but the FCC hasn’t fined Imus for his comments?

  23. azureblue says:

And while we’re at it, then why isn’t Gwen stopping the rappers who have been using the word “ho” & bitches to describe women? Why does she single out a white guy, but ignore the damage being done by black rappers to the esteem of black women?

And why are the racist comments made by Al Sharpton in the Tawana Brawley hoax and ‘91 Crown Heights affair being ignored?

  24. Rocks911 says:

    Badmoodman,

Obviously the Christian coalition wasn’t as upset by Imus, being white and all.

  25. Rocks911 says:

    azureblue,

    Hell yea lets lynch em!

  26. pgw says:

“And while we’re at it, then why isn’t Gwen stopping the rappers who have been using the word “ho” & bitches to describe women? Why does she single out a white guy, but ignore the damage being done by black rappers to the esteem of black women?”

last i checked, mccain, russert, et al didn’t make regular appearances on tupac albums; but they do go on ‘imus’ with some regularity.

  27. chris says:

to #23 – b/c it’s ok for such things to be said by black rappers since their doing so doesn’t provide an opportunity for some to further promulgate racial tension. the truth be, if many of those who continue to promulgate such sentiments – whether directly or by blowing things out of proportion would just stop their tyrades, there would be much less racial tension in the world.

go think on that one for awhile

  28. Dale says:

This whole thing is pretty ridiculous. If this had been a *CONSERVATIVE* talk show host, everybody on here would’ve been crying for his head. Additionally, TP waited 4 days before posting anything about this incident; yet they jumped on Ann Coulter (who I am *not* defending) immediately (as did every poster on here). And this site is supposed to be non-partisan? Riiight.

And most of the comments in this thread have either said it’s been blown out of proportion, or have just discussed Ms. Ifill… Again, imagine the *exact same comment* was made by Rush, or Sean, or Laura, or Ann, or Michelle. The comment (and discussions thereof) would’ve been ALL OVER this site. But because the talk show host in question is a lib? (hear the crickets chirping?)

FWIW, I wholeheartedly agree with Raven and Badmoodman… this incident was NOT overblown, and Imus should get much more than a two week suspension. (and it’s only the MSNBC simulcast that’s being suspended).

Also, let me say again… I am *not* defending Ann Coulter… she was dead wrong in the comments she made regarding Sen. Edwards, and I hope that any loss of revenue she experiences will be enough to make her rethink any future comments she may make.

Too bad TP and many of the posters here can’t get past there hypocrisy to say the same about Don Imus.

  29. Dale says:

Obviously the Christian coalition wasn’t as upset by Imus, being white and all.

    Comment by Rocks911 — April 10, 2007 @ 10:22 am

You obviously don’t know what you’re talking about… there’s plenty on condemnation from the right that’s being directed towards Imus.

  30. veritas says:

Gwen IS a class act! Don Imus is he “poster boy” for the ReichWing, Bigoted Rethugs who is attempting to shift the attention to Don Imus and his huge ego rather than the young women whose character he besmerched. This is about these maligned young women of the Rutgers Championship Basketball Team and NOT about Don Imus at this point. It’s become all about “how Don Imus feels” rather than “how these maligned young women feel”. Don Imus is a nasty, hate-filled, depressed, angry and miserable old man whose days of glory are rapidly coming to a close. I suspect a bit of latent mysogeny in his character myself. After all, his “trophy wife” is simply that: an armpiece to prop up a wrinkled, nasty old codger. He’s using her which is evident in the way he treats her publicly.

  31. trippin says:

If this was the first time, it would be out of proportion. If he didn’t swear to Clarence Page seven years ago that he would stop this racist banter then, it would be out of proportion. If this guy didn’t make an entire living out of disparaging others it would be out of proportion.

But the only thing out of proportion in this sad scenario is the sucking sound of the likes of Tom Oliphant, Howard Fineman, and the rest of the crowd who are beholden to this human trainwreck for helping them sell their books.

Saying he’s sorry is not sufficient. Being sorry is what you are when someone’s dog gets run over. He needs to tell these women he was wrong. He needs to beg these women for their forgiveness. And that pinhead McGurk right along with him.

These women are the ones who were wronged, not us, and not Tom Oliphant. If they are willing to give him their forgiveness, then fine. If they aren’t willing, he needs to go. I would see his fate in their hands alone.

This is not a free speech issue: Imus can say whatever he wants on the street corner, just like every other citizen. Just because there are people out there to consume this trash doesn’t mean it should be broadcast on the publicly-owned airwaves.

  32. pgw says:

“But because the talk show host in question is a lib?”

    yup, dem powerhouse don imus

  33. Rocks911 says:

    Dale,

Retard, the question was about FCC fines, not supposed flack from the right, see the difference?

    Oh yea, F*ck off.

  34. ckerst says:

The repugnacan party has given bigots and racists a comfort zone to operate in.
….would just stop their tyrades, there would be much less racial tension in the world……Comment by chris
Yep if those darn black people would just shut up there would be fewer problems. Just shut up and take it. Of course when Chris is discriminated against or someone points out that his intellectually challenged argument is about as deep as sheet of paper and as accurate as his spelling he will be offended.

  35. Jason M. Hendler says:

That was a great response, focusing on the call to be better than ourselves, rather than dwelling on our baser behaviours. That is something that I would expect a minister / community healer to say – I was floored.

  36. WORFEUS says:

Ok, this is going to make me very unpopular, but everyone I think needs to go back and listen to what Imus was saying.

He was trying to compliment the team when he said that. He was trying to say they were tough, and would “kick ass”. But it came out stupidly.

It was a stupid thing to say, and I am fine that he got a 2 week suspension for being “stupid”.

But I am tired of Al Sharpton and everyone else trying to attribute racist sentiments to it. I don’t think he was trying to be racist. This has nothing to do with what party Imus sides or doesn’t side with. It has to do with WHAT HE ACTUALLY SAID, and the CONTEXT in which it was said.

And after seeing the entire video, its clear he was trying to pay them a compliment in an offhanded way.

Michael Richards WAS being racist when he said what he did.

George Allen WAS being racist when he said what he did.

But after seeing the entire video clip, I don’t think Don Imus was trying to be racist.

He was just trying to praise them and he ended up saying it in a really stupid way.

  37. Dale says:

#33, we’re just waiting for the libs to step up. guess we’ll be waiting awhile. What would your reaction be if Rush had made those comments?

  38. WORFEUS says:

Al Sharpton, (who I like) is off base on this one.

He is stirring up racial hatred where it doesn’t need to be.

  39. WORFEUS says:

But I also think its good he was suspened for 2 weeks.

Thats a lot of lost revenue, and will make him think before he opens his mouth next time.

  40. Crump's Brother says:

Don’t we have more important crap to deal with than this?

  41. WORFEUS says:

#33, we’re just waiting for the libs to step up. guess we’ll be waiting awhile. What would your reaction be if Rush had made those comments?

    Comment by Dale — April 10, 2007 @ 10:52 am

The difference between Imus and Limpballs, is if he could get away with it, Limpballs would say that and more, each and every day.

  42. hacker bob says:

Did someone mention Sharpton and Jackson?

When he at last took to full-time rabble-rousing, he did so with a ferocity, lashing out at “faggots,”
“If the Jews want to get it on,” he said, “tell them to pin their yarmulkes back and come over to my house.”
    -Both by Al Sharpton

Rev. Jesse Jackson referred to Jews as “Hymies” and to New York City as “Hymietown”
    -Jesse Jackson

And these people are leading the charge against Imus.

  43. stephen says:

Yeah she’s classy, but this media frenzy is rediculous…freedom of speech should trump advertiser fears, and Imus or anyone else should be able to joke about anything in a comedy show context…but noooo, not in a corporate media system

  44. WORFEUS says:

Didn’t the term “Progressive” tip you off?

  45. Rocks911 says:

    WORFEUS,

Do you suffer from multiple personality disorder?

You say he was trying to compliment them but it was good he was suspended for two weeks? Huh?

  46. Dale says:

#41, So am I to assume that you’d be angrier at Rush?

  47. Dale says:

#44, silly me… I guess this gave me the idea:

The Center for American Progress Action Fund is a nonpartisan organization. With the blog, CAPAF seeks to provide a forum that advances progressive ideas and policies.

You really should know the aims of the sites you’re posting to. (embarrassed yet?)

  48. old hack says:

What happend to our first amendment? You don’t advocate making fun of people “weaker” then you then stop cracking jokes about Bush.

This is lame. You people calling for Imus’s head need to grow up.

  49. WORFEUS says:

You say he was trying to compliment them but it was good he was suspended for two weeks? Huh?

    Comment by Rocks911 — April 10, 2007 @ 11:00 am

    Thats right.

What part of that are you having difficulty with?

Whatever his meaning his choice of words was inflammatory and offensive.

He didn’t mean to be offensive, but he was.

If I run over your head with the front tire of my pickup, but didn’t mean to, they’ll still probably write me a ticket or two.

  50. pgw says:

“You don’t advocate making fun of people “weaker” then you then stop cracking jokes about Bush.”

of course. bush and imus are the real victims here.

#41, So am I to assume that you’d be angrier at Rush?

    Comment by Dale — April 10, 2007 @ 11:01 am

Rush is a racist. His words are spoken with malice of forethought.

Imus was just babbling, and was not trying to make a racial slur or say anything demaning, at least I don’t see that in the video.

If someone can show me where his malice or desire to belittle the team was, I’m all ears.

I will be happy to reverse my position if someone can show me something that I have yet to see on that video.

You stand there, at your moment of achievement that you’ve worked so hard for–and listen as a rich white nationally syndicated talk-show host calls you a bunch of prostitutes?
And watch as columnists come on and declare solidarity forever with him?

I don’t care if Don Imus hates Bush, or is a liberal, or mends ducklings’ broken wings in his spare time. If he were Bill Moyers, I would want him off the airwaves.

I have had enough if arwaves filled with conservatives insulting the victims of disasters, people dying of horrible diseases, mothers who’ve lost sons in war, wives who’ve lost husbands in terrorist attacks–and young champion athletes who are guilty of being blak women.

Tom Oliphant, Howard Fineman, and the right wing trollosphere have lined up with Don Imus.

Gwen Ifill, at least, stands with the Rutgers women.
    So do I.

The coach is at a press conference saying how the girls feelings were hurt. 5 of them are freshman. Some of them are white.

Imus calls them hos and Ifill a cleaning lady. Kind of seems like a pattern.

Who makes comments about men’s basketball teams being pimps or janitors. It’s why Pelosi is called out for every move she makes, and Hillary is fair game because she’s tough, women are considered less valuable in whatever position they hold.

As a woman I would be happier if I never had to hear a word out of misogynists like Imus and Howard Stern. I would also appreciate if the right wing pundits would treat Pelosi with the same respect they would a man in her position.

    I love armchair constitutional scholars.

Art I: “Congress shall make no law[...]abridging the freedom of speech[...]”

Don Imus freely spoke and people freely expressed their outrage. MSNBC exercised its freedom to give Imus a cooling-off period for embarrassing them. No constitutional issues to see here, move along…

Whoa. Bush is C-in-C of all our armed forces, has veto power over legislation, and is protected 24/7 by bodyguards FOR LIFE, but if I criticize him, I’m “making fun” of someone weaker?!

2-Quit hiding behind the “PC police” chliche, unless you defended Bill Mahar when he said the 9-11 hijackers were many things, but they wern’t cowards.

Comment by bob (not the hacker) — April 10, 2007 @ 10:01 am

Bob, you hit the hammer on the nail. African-American (being politically correct) comedians like Dave Chapelle and Chris Rock constantly degrade Caucasians and the African-American community for humorous purposes, but Jesse James (Action Jackson) nor Al Perm (Slick Rick Sharpton) never approach these individuals about their comedic act. There is a double standard within the African-American community, and it needs to be resolved. My sisters, who are professionals, heard Imus’ comment, and it didn’t offend them because they know that they are upstanding female citizens.

  80. WORFEUS says:

Women call each other “hos” all the time in jest these days. I see it on TV all the time, and in ,movies.

Imus was clearly trying to be familiar and homey, and doing something white celebrities are always trying to do.

He was trying to “sound black”.

And except for Vanilla Ice and Kid Rock, not too many can get away with it.

So I wish they’d stop trying.

Jackson and Sharpton both have a history of making racially insensitive comments. Just use the Google, you’ll find them. I just find it ironic that racists are condemning a perceived racist statement. Sounds like the pot talking to the kettle.

And yes, Imus has the right to say what he did, even if we disagree with it. Does the First Amendment ring a bell?

  82. Rocks911 says:

    WORFEUS,

You said “whatever his meaning”, that’s the part I’m having difficulty with.

  84. Proud Dem says:

b/c it’s ok for such things to be said by black rappers since their doing so doesn’t provide an opportunity for some to further promulgate racial tension. the truth be, if many of those who continue to promulgate such sentiments – whether directly or by blowing things out of proportion would just stop their tyrades, there would be much less racial tension in the world.

go think on that one for awhile

    Comment by chris

So, it’s okay for African Americans to call themselves denegrating names, but if a Caucasian person does it’s a crime? Double standard, anyone?

I’m not condoning what Imus said, but he didn’t say “the H word” first, it was his producer, Imus just took it and ran. Imus should not be the only one being punished for what he said. The producer should be suspended as well. True, since Imus won’t be on air for 2 weeks, that is punishment for the producer, but if Imus is being slung thorough the mud, so should the man who cast the first word.

I think calling anyone by a derogatory name is totally rude in any instance. I try very hard not to call anyone an idiot too, even though some of the trolls on this site make it very hard to follow that policy.

“Can’t we all just get along?” Please?

Once again, it doesn’t matter your intent when you break the law.

If someone runs a stopsign, they’re going to get a ticket.

Whether they meant to or not.

Racial monikers are a stop sign for Disc Jockey’s (just ask Vino Greaseminelli) and Imus knows that, yet he used one anyway.

There has to be a price to that, and I think given the circumstances, a 2 week suspension is perfectly appropriate.

But all this hullabalooey is much ado about nothing.

Al Sharpton and Gwen Ifil are blowing this out of proportion, and are doing a diservice to us all by fanning the fires of racisim when there really was none there.

Wrong. He doesn’t have a right to say what he wants on the public airways. Racist comments are not permitted in commercial broadcasting.

Imus screwed up and is being punished accordingly.

I’ll be happy to. I pray that this is wrong.

Frankly, I don’t see how Chimpy would be able to pull this off…there would be rioting in the streets of every city in the nation if he tried this stunt.

I’m just saying that this rumor isn’t going away…on the contrary, it’s gaining momentum. General Ivashov is calling for an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council. Even if “Operation Bite” isn’t real at all, someone is going to a great deal of trouble to make it appear as if it is, which is in itself newsworthy.

Yes he has the right to say anything he chooses. But he is talent. And talent is employed at the pleasure of the producers of a show. And they can at anytime decide whether it is wise to employ said talent.

The average Screen Actor’s Guild (SAG) and American Federaion of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) makes under $5,000 per year.
So if you are one of the few performers who can make a decent living you ought to be grateful everyday of your life.

So like Mel Gibson, Michael Richards and even Jane Fonda say whatever you feel. But then be ready to suffer the consequences when the public doesn’t want to hear from you any more.

If our only two choices when something like this happens is to forget about it OR to totally ostracize and vilify the offender, we’re going to end up missing the boat a lot of the time.

To call someone a racist, I believe that you need to know something about the person’s character. My assumption is that pretty much no one on this board listens to Imus or knows anything about him besides the recent Rutgers remark.

Yes, I listen to Imus. And I think that I know a little about his character, probably more than most peopl on this board. And yes, I think the “black friend” argument is valid in this case. G.E. Patterson was his friend, and Imus seemed deeply saddened by his passing. If he was such a racist, why would Patterson’s widow appear on his show?

Imus was a vocal supporter of Harold Ford, Jr.’s senate bid. Were any of you listening to Imus’ reaction to the infamous “Harold, call me” smear ad? My guess is NO.

What I am trying to say is, don’t judge a man by a 3-word quote taken out of context. Try learning about the man’s character before you judge him.

Imus has done more for progressive causes than anyone reading this could ever hope to do.

Calling somebody nappy headed has been a racist statement for a very long time. What do you me “perceived racist statement?”

    Comment by shane — April 10, 2007 @ 12:33 pm

Actually, the term “nappyheaded” orginated with African Americans in this country. As best I can recall, it was a term applied to black people back when “afros” started to come into style. Those without afro’s were referred to by other black people as “nappyheaded”.

It may have earlier origins, but thats the first time I remember it being used.

But I’ll tell you what, I will be glad to call him a racist as soon as you call Sharpton one. Deal?

I figure the outrage should be more about the sexist tone of his comments.

The rumor was wrong…certainly…and I’ll admit that with relief.

bob, I have no trouble admitting that this rumor was wrong. Earlier, I had said that I prayed it was wrong, and no one is happier than I that this has not come to pass.

The problem that I’m having with Dale right now is that he apparently believes that I’m the one who started this rumor…instead of merely reporting on it. It’s not surprising,…Dale has serious reading comprehension issues, and he has a huge axe to grind after the U.S. Attorneys incident.

One more thing, bob…the passage from me you quoted above was originally written last week…well before the 6th. I’m puzzled as to why you consider my reposting what I said before the target date as ’spin’.

Thats right. I don’t think the people hear realize what a strong vocal opponent of the Bush administration Imus has been, particularly lately.

Now that certainly has no impact on what he said, but what he said really wasn’t that big of a deal. It was an “UNFORTUNATE CHOICE OF WORDS”, but his intent was clearly to PRAISE the team-members, not offend them.

I’m not saying he should be fired. Or that he’s not progressive. I said he is racist. We all are to some degree. I also think he is sexist as he wouldn’t call a men’s basketball team pimps. I have a right to my opinion. That’s all it is.

I didn’t watch him before, I won’t now. I also think if people want to boycott his sponsors they should be allowed to.

If you want to play the showbiz game you have to know the score. He does, maybe more now than before.

FYI I won’t go to another Mel Gibson movie, I never liked Jane Fonda and even when she was reduced to making exercise tapes I didn’t buy those, I don’t listen to rap music, Fox News or anything Limbaugh has to say. That’s showbiz.

If no offense if intended, and someone takes offense anyway, then the problem lies with the person taking offense.

    Which sin is greater?

Carlos Mencia does “MIND OF MENCIA”, on Comedy Central where he insults EVERY SINGLE RACE.

He goes through the streets insulting Asians, Jews, Latinos, Blacks, Whites and anything else he can think of.

Do we take the 1499 definition or the 1950 version?

When the liberals become as closed minded as the republicans, and end up with stances, (like this one), that I just can’t side with, and the neocon trolls are in the right, you’ll find me joining in with the right wing trolls to denounce the fallacy of your position.

Right is not a republican or democratic principle. Right is just right, and wrong is just wrong.

And accusing Don Imus of racism when he really wasn’t trying to be a racist, is just wrong.

Even though his comments were degrading, the comedy bit was hilarious. As African Americans, we must learn to remove racial paranoia from our everyday life. Once this happens, we will be able to fully live and enjoy life as the human race.

Also it’s impossible for me to think of anything ‘fully from a Black persons (I refuse to say african american because spike lee is as african as I am Irish) perspective because I’m not black. I can guess what it must be like. Like when Eddie Murphy takes jabs at how up tight white people are. What I’m seeing mostly in this bloated non issue is more projected white guilt. Every ethnicity can make fun of whites all they want but because we’re the majority we just have to stand on the side lines and take it because 150 years ago some white people I’m in no way related to had slaves.

PGW, if you expect me to decimate your positions, then you’re going to need to make one.

From this sentence, all I can extrapolate is you’re calling me a meany?

so if female african-american teens across the country hear those statements and they got upset by them, then it’s their fault?

    Comment by pgw — April 10, 2007 @ 3:16 pm

how many female african-american teens were watching/listening to the Imus program before this story blew up? Were they affected by his comments before the media went into a frenzy? My question is, what are we accomplishing by crucifying Imus and putting him in the limelight? Is his sincere apology to the nation and to the Rutgers women, along with a 2-week suspension really not enough? Should he be stoned to death or something?

I really wish some of you would look into the causes the Imus supports, and the sheer generosity of the man. This fact is being overlooked.

  255. I-Train says:

What I am saying, is what Carlos Mencia is saying.

When we all unpucker our buttholes, and lighten up, then racism will be a problem of the past.

But as long as we are going to lie, and accuse people of being racist when they clearly are not, then we’ll always have a racial divide.

    Comment by WORFEUS — April 10, 2007 @ 3:50 pm

I agree with what Carlos Mencia is trying to accomplish, but BOY is his show unfunny.

  256. I WORFEUS says:

And let me say this as well, as perchance the right wingers in here mistake my disagreement with Al Sharpton on THIS one issue, as a condemnation of him, Jesse Jackson or the Rainbow Coalition.

If you scroll up, you’ll see where I repeatedly said I like Al Sharpton. And I really do. Americans need Al Sharptons and Jesse Jacksons, to stand up when real bigotry rears its ugly head, and shout it into obscurity.

But there are times when Al is wrong, and this is one of them.

When he falsely attributues racial motives to a man who is clearly not racist, then he is doing a disservice to his cause, and to us all.

    Exactly.

A point lost on PGW, but poignant nonetheless.

As I said earlier, people are mad, because people like Al Sharpton are telling them they should be mad.

When good people, like I know pgw and Shane are, STOP fanning the fires of racial hatred by inventing racist motives where none existed before, then maybe this country will start to heal on the racial thing.

  260. pgw says:

“So here we are, an hour later, and you are still badgering me about the date of RAW?”

for someone preaching about the greatness carlos mencia’s work and referencing richard pryor’s ’70s bits, i figured you would’ve seen “Raw” in 1987, especially if you were 18 or 22 [graduation age] in 1986.

  261. I WORFEUS says:

But if someone can SHOW ME, just WHERE Don Imus demonstrates MALICE OR some surrounding CONTEXT where RACISM is perceived, then I will be happy to reconsider my position on this one topic.

All I see is a white guy, trying to sound black.

And maybe I did see it back then. As I said I saw it on HBO last summer, and THATS when I remembered it.

But you keep straining your RED HERRING, and try to divert all focus on a silly irrelevent date, that has nothing to do with yours or my positions.

…Imus, Limbaugh, Hannity, O’Reilly et al. all have a responsibility to ALL of the people in this country to be “responsible” in their pronouncements…

…because of the POWER the PRIVILEGE of DAILY being given a voice to express opinions on air to millions affords them…

…Why do you think that Hannity, Limbaugh, Coulter, O’Reilly et al. (who I suspect would dearly love to if they could without consequence)…

…don’t say outright to their inbred, ignorant, warmongering, murderous, racist, redneck, base….

…”Kill every Liberal/Progressive, anti-War, illegal immigrant, fa***t and ni***r TRAITOR you can find”?

…they don’t because they understand that there are consequences to pay for such irresponsible hate-speech,especially should something happen that could directly be traced back to their words (see Nathan Hale and the KKK)…

…A post above says Imus has said that Bush and Cheney should be executed for war crimes…

…this is not a racist pronouncement, it is a LEGAL one…

…many say that Imus does a lot for Black children at his camp for kids with cancer (and is by implication a non-racist)…

…that’s a matter of personal interpretation what constitutes “a lot”, and does not illuminate his reasons for doing so (maybe he does so to cover his racist guilt or bury it?)…

…and it CERTAINLY does not give him the license to use racist statements on the air…

    …I say this…

…IF Imus stays on the air fine and good, it wouldn’t surprise me given the fact that so many people in this country get their talking points from drug addled racists and bigots, and are by and large HYPOCRITES of the first order…

…but I’d like to see Black, Hispanic, Asian, Arab and other ethnic minorities…

…given DAILY license to exercise THEIR first amendment rights on air as the hacker bobs, old hacks, Dales and Darylls like to crow about…

…like a Louis Farrakhan, a Hugo Chavez, a young Fidel Castro, how about O.J., or a Leonard Pelletier?…

    …Let’s be FAIR and BALANCED…

…instead of perpetuating white male privilege…

…that is the root of all EVIL in this country (and debate on race)…

…and if my description of social conservatives are seen as offensive…

    …I apologize…

    …that should make it alright…

    …right?

    I stated my opinion.

Sorry if I can’t jump on your hate Don Imus bandwagon.

I don’t love him. I don’t hate him. I seldom listen to him.

I just don’t see the racist intent people are attributing to him.

If you’re saying you don’t see it either, then what the hell were you arguing with me for over the last 4 hours?

And you think because there was no racist intent the story should be dropped.
I think those girls deserve a personal apology from him.

Could you stand up under that type of scrutiny? Could anyone?

They’re acting like he shot someone, meanwhile real news about people dying is being put aside to show us what size baby booties Don Imus wore.

Don Imus has shown he’s has a inflamatory mouth.

Thats why he has a show.

But to make any more out of what appears to be a completely benign comment to me is a disgrace.

If you can’t see the difference between the two, then I’m sorry.

    But I do.

Every F$#$#ING channel I turn to is IMUS IMUS IMUS.

You’d think he wearing sawastikas and burning crosses on the mall grounds the way we’re treating this.

Do you think I really care whether you believe im in my mid 40’s or not?

Don’t you think maybe I say somethings to be purposefully silly to impact a point, or just to joke around?

Whats wrong with watching Carlos Mencia? Is there some rule against people over 40 watching him?

Is your butthole always puckered this tight?

If you want my “message” scroll up and read genius.

My message is the same as it was since I came in here.

You are blowing out of proporation something that was not intended to be malicious and you are attributing racism where racism doesn’t exist, thus demaning the actual war against racism and hurting the overall cause of ridding our country of racism and prejudice.

THATS the message, and if you could actually read instead of just invent, then you’d see that message in every post.

i know what your position is. but maybe you should go to a high school girls’ basketball game in a predominately african-american area and ask the people there whether they thought what imus said was racist or if they take offense to the term ‘nappyheaded hos.’ i know what your position is, but think beyond your self.

I know what their position is. Its given to them by Al Sharpton. I live in DC in case you forgot, and the black community is a tight community here. And they listen to Al Sharpton and when he says they should be mad, they get mad. Thats why he’s such a great organizer. And right now people are mad.

Which is precisly what I am saying. Blowing this out of proportion can get people hurt. And I am not talking about their feelings. These are volatile times and I was here in the 60’s when they were even worse, so I am telling you, it is time to stop fanning the fires of racism before you do some damagewe can’t recover from.

There is enough real racism out there without creating it where it doesn’t exist.

And it is not in this statement, and at no time do I see Don Imus donning a hood and persecuting the black people. This was an offcolor comment, no more. It was meant to be nice, it came out wrong, and we’ve been dedicating 24\7 news cycles to it ever since.

Meanwhile, the white and black communities grow further and further apart.

Imus is a piker when it comes to being a racist, mean-spirited fool, you’ve got him beat butt-down, FILTHY TROLL WHOREFEUS!

As you want to try to paint me as a racist, I’ll reply.
Farrakhan, O.J. or Leonard Pelletier, Fine. I could care less if a minority has a radio show. It really does not effect my life. Let them get a radio gig, get the sponsors, and get a national show. Like everyone else in the business, they have to earn their position. Like Tom Joyner, Larry Elder, Al Sharpton, Rosie O’Donnel, etc. No problem.

As for Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro, the First Amendment does not apply. See our Constitution is only valid within our borders.

Imus was stupid. Period. I do not think that there was malicious intent. I see, if anything, that it was more sexist than racist. Remember, the white girls on the team were also refered to as “nappy headed hos”. But we will just be upset for the black being offended.

    Give me a break.

Imus has shown This attitude of white supremacy for all the world to see MANY times. It has been so reprehensible that Imus even to a pledge to stop spouting white supremacy crap. Of course he can’t, it is rooted down deep in his soul and he is powerless to stop it.

This time he picked on a female basketball team, because he is brainless and foolish. He picked the wrong target. Anyone of the ladies who spoke yesterday makes 1,000,000 of the little brainless creep Imus and his waterboy, WHOREFEUS. (How many Imuses and WHOREFEUSes it would take to make ONE Gwen Ifill, the actual subject of this thread, I shudder to think.)

You see, it is NOT the color of your skin; it is the content of your character. And when it comes to character, Imus and WHOREFEUS are CONTENT-LESS!

Of course, WHOREFEUS did accompish his goal; he distracted the thread from Gwen Ifill and onto HIMSELF and Imus. Like Imus, WHOREFEUS can’t stop babbling and spouting out of his sick soul.

You’re the one who can’t seem to stop talking to me jackass.

  346. mimi says:

I’m sick of people bringing up Al Sharpton & Jessie Jackson where the Imus comments are concerned. For the record, Al Sharpton paid, in public opinion & money, for his part in the Tawanna Brawley controversy in NYC many years ago. He was sued by the wrongly accused and he paid without whining. Jessie Jackson used the term “heimy-town” depicting Jews in NYC in a private conversation that was leaked to the press. He paid in public opinion. Neither was speaking from a publicly supported platform @ the time. Imus’s comments suggest a deeper, more insidious racism that is present in white America today that African-Americans experience every day. It is a mindless, disregard for blacks in every industry & profession & it has become popular to react this way. It is the reason that respect for America has declined worldwide. We simply don’t practice @ home what we preach to the rest of the world. The US once produced one-third of the world’s college graduates & now we only produce 14%. The ladies of the Rutger’s basketball team will be part of that 14%. They should be celebrated for their academic and athletic achievements not ridiculed by 2 unattractive men, who, if they were female, wouldn’t even be on TV. Thank God Imus is gone from MSNBC. Hopefully, CBS will follow suit or feel the economic heat. Finally, when is it credible for a 66-year old man to adopt his code of conduct from a rapper?

He got fired! He lost it all. His entire show!!! Over one little comment that was never intended to be racist!!!

Meanwhile, Al Sharpton is planning a protest this weekend!!

The guy is dead and they’re still trying to hang him.

Al Sharpton is fanning the fires of racism by attributing it to a statement where none was intended.

  348. futuregen says:

I find it interesting that whenever a white person in the public eye makes a ignorant, prejudiced, sometimes racist remark about black ppl, white ppl are the first ones to say that an apology is all that is required. But, let someone say ANYTHING even slightly negative about Jewish people and the world stops and the holocust is brought up as a future event that would happen if the negative remarks about Jews were to continue. And the person who made the remark is presented to the public as a horrible person (ex Mel Gibson) Why the double standard? No one, should have to put up with remarks such as the one Imus said. And those who decide to make prejudiced remarks about any race or religion should have to face up to all consequences, no matter how harsh.

  349. Anne says:

In following this story, I have been absolutely amazed at the degree of ignorance as to why the (now infamous) comments made by Imus are so insulting. Many have been hiding behind the “slavery ended a long time ago, everyone should just get over it” or “black men say the same thing about black women” excuses. We should not be tolerant of degrading comments about women period. But more to the point, the phrases/words being discussed are rooted in black caricature which was created by white southerners for the purpose of subjugating blacks and attempting to convince all parties involved that blacks were inherently inferior. (That includes the portrayal of blacks as subhuman/animalistic, brutes and mammies.) Caricature has had a devastating psychological impact over the last 200+ years. But, no one has to take my word for it–author Marilyn Kern-Foxworth has written an entire book on this topic. And, of course, there are the numerous visual artists who have devoted their lives to working against the aforementioned stereotypes precisely because they are considered so problematic.

Lastly, it is insulting to assume that those who are speaking out against Imus aren’t equally concerned about the denigration of women in the context of hip-hop. Check out Byron Hurt’s documentary that recently aired on PBS before you cry “double standard”: http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/hiphop/

  350. trs says:

Gwen Ifill, what kind of a world do you live in? She’s on meet the press, right now, on my television, talking about Imus. Yes Imus is a jackass, but so is she, and the Reverend Al and Reverend Jackson. African Americans are part of society now, and they have equal rights. There’s still friction between the two communities yet when there’s no burning slurs on the books, we love to pretend its fine. Then we have an incident and the Reverend’s cant get enough face time and someone goes on TV and complains. If they feels blacks are a part of society and have all the rights and responsibilities thereunder then they need to stop pretending they’re a special group of victims whenever something hurtful is said. You can’t be a member of society only when you want to. All or nothing. So please, grow up and shut up. Now.

  351. Paul says:

God Bless Gwen Ifill. I support constructive, empowering, positive
leadership role-models (especially by example) like Gwen.
The black community has too many so-called leaders like Al Sharpton and
Jesse Jackson who share Don Imus’s cynical culture of vulgar name-calling
and cruelty. That culture only immobilizes people in a negative morass
of “I’m a powerless victim” self-pity. The heck with that!
Gwen Ifill for President! You Go Girl!

  352. john rigazio says:

    Hi Gwen,

Caught you on nbc talk today, you impressed the hell out of me, and I am sure many others in the audience.

I believe you had the rest of the group following your lead on the Imus discussion.

Keep up the good work, and hope to see more of you.

    Jack

  353. Sabra says:

It’s interesting to read the thread of the conversation here. There seemed to be more support for Imus before his show’s sponsor ads were pulled, his two week suspension and his subsequent firing from MSNBC and CBS. I don’t sympathize with Imus, he was a bully and finally he was repremanded for the racist schtick that made him famous. This is America, I have no doubt he will be back but, hopefully, on the fringes of the media. Thankfully, there are responsible, intellectual journalist like Gwen Ifill that set an example for all journalists about higher standards in media.
