Waxman hearings set on Tillman, Lynch misinformation.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee “has scheduled hearings on the military’s misleading statements that followed the friendly fire death of Pat Tillman in Afghanistan and the rescue of Pvt. Jessica Lynch in Iraq. The April 24 hearing is “part of an investigation into whether misinformation was part of a strategy to mislead the public.”

It has to be tough to be a Democratic congressperson when you have to phrase it as “part of an investigation into whether misinformation was part of a strategy to mislead the public.”

Inside, you know all of them would much rather say something like “part of the obvious proof of the adminstration’s blatant strategy to pull the wool over the public’s eyes.”

But I guess you have to attempt to be diplomatic.

Which is more than I can say for the Republicans on a different thread topic.

Misleading the public is what this entire Presidental regime has been about. Lies, lies and more lies. Bush and his loyalists are allergic to the truth.

After the requested Rice testimony, subpeonas for DOJ documents, Senate calls for more documents and now this, I bet GW wished the Dems HAD stayed on vacation a little longer.

How dare this traitor try and dispargage the heroism of these two heroes! This is an outrage.

Pat Tillman: Killed by Friendly Fire or Executed by His Own Government?

“The Bush Administration knew at the top that celebrity soldier Pat Tillman had been killed by persons in, or attached to his own unit, yet it purposely chose to muffle the incident for more than two years; lying to the family while lionizing the victim as a war hero. Circumstantial evidence, primarily illogical actions at very high levels of the administration, suggests more than a cover up of a “friendly fire” accident.”

“America’s most famous volunteer soldier was, according to his brother and constant companion, on the verge of whistle-blowing the bankruptcy of US policy in Iraq.”

Heroes that other REPUBLICANS would rather see dead, or lie about their deaths to avoid embarrassment? You people are sickos. Tell me Patrick1, why does the GOP hate Tillman so much that they would cover up what might have been his MURDER by their fellow GOP?

Political gain? Protect BUSH? What’s your deal man? Do you hate truth, justice and honoring our soldiers so much? You really are nothing more than a Taliban terrorist that hates our freedoms, and are values, aren’t you little wacko?

    Lynch’s words (post-media orgy):

When asked about her hero status, “That wasn’t me. I’m not about to take credit for something I didn’t do … I’m just a survivor.”

Yeah, but you will pocket a million or so dollars for it. What a sham.

  16. ForTruth says:

I heard the Lynch thing was really about people who were not properly trained, couldn’t drive a vehicle, and couldn’t fire their weapons. Or the weapons jammed.

  17. raynman says:

I don’t think there’s anyone out there who doesn’t think that Tillman and Lynch aren’t heroes. Hell, anyone who puts on the uniform of this country and faces the possibility of enemy fire is, at least in my book, a hero.

What we’re questioning is the callous (and apparently quite calculated) misuse of these heroes’ stories (or fabrications thereof) as a means to justify and glorify what is turning out to be a quagmire of epic proportions.

I think that any administration that either hides or manufactures evidence in an attempt to paint a prettier picture of wartime heroes has abdicated the right to claim any type of moral high ground. And I think that we have a responsibility to ensure that those who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in our names are served better then that.

  18. chimpeach says:

As hokey as this may sound, Waxman actually makes me feel proud of my country. There are a lot of places around the world where the opposition party couldn’t have been voted back into power and allowed to investigate a corrupt president the way this one has. We’re doing it without a revolution. So far.

  19. chimpeach says:

    #11 Patrick1

Tillman is a hero for what he did, not for how he died. There’s nothing heroic about getting shot by your own troops.

And, he was very clear about his opposition to the invasion of Iraq. He signed up to go after the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan, not to go wherever little Georgie felt like playing war.

  20. thebob says:

Investigate, Impeachment will come. The Republibans only truth is a distortion of the bible. All news and information must serve the leader. Loyalty to Bush is all that counts. Bad news isn’t real, didn’t happen. Reminds me of Baghdad Bob standing in front of the camera denying that the Americans were anywhere near Baghdad while the Tanks were at the edge of the city. The Bush Administration is a complete and utter failure! Everything was a lie! Wait till Congress digs Bush, Cheney and Rove out of their little spider holes! Should we demand the resignation of all members of the Bush Party and forbid their involvement in Politics?

  21. greatdogs says:

Will Waxman call Torie Clark? She was the PR honcho in the Pentagon at the time who moved over to CNN after her stunt with with Rumsfeld. It might be interesting to hear her spin.

  22. Marie says:

Yes, we have to be diplomatic in dealing with Bush&Co — they have not a clue about tact themselves. So the Dems will phrase things politely and in a dignified manner while investigating the back alley, cheap trash, lying garbage that emanates from the White House and its Dept of Defense.
Within days of Lynch’s “rescue” we were hearing conflicting stories of the facts. And every day brought more contradictions, finally in the words of Pfc. Lynch herself.
We have all had our memories refreshed regarding the shameful Tillman incident.
So, yes, we must investigate whether misinformation and disinformation is part of their strategy. That will include hearing from Victoria Clark, David Senor, Tommy Franks, Richard Meyers, et al.

  23. Marie says:

I believe we can thank Waxman and Conyers and others for the rise in approval level of the congress. The public is eager to get the results of these inquiries into the preceeding six years of a congress who aided and abetted an unchecked president.

Waxman is going to go down in history as one of our most-necessary public servants…thank God he’s doing his job (and not, say, running for President)

  26. Shawn Fassett says:

Has anybody explained why Tillman’s fellow soldiers burned his uniform as well (and most important) his journal !?!?!?!

  27. Shawn Fassett says:

How many more stories of this Administration attacking fellow Americans do we need to hear before we all believe its best to look under the rock rather than look away? http://www.alternet.org/waroniraq/50191/

    Comment by Shawn Fassett #26

    Thanks Shawn…

…this says a lot about some of these “heroes”…

  29. Keith Gore Wiseman says:

Maybe now, someone in the mainstream media will dare to ask publicly how Lynch came to have an American flag draped over her during her rescue. The “rescuers” had to take that flag in with them and take the time to drape it over her, just so, before taking her out. If they had time to decorate, this was no act of derring-do. Maybe they shot the whole thing in a studio somewhere.

  30. Tim says:

The Tillman story is outrageous. However, the Jessica-Lynch-as-hero story is cut from whole cloth. The doctor that treated her at the time could have taken her out of “captivity” at any time if he had a means of transporting her. She was never a captive. His story was easy to get, if the “left-wing” media wanted to get it.
It will be interesting to see how much of this comes to light.
