Two weeks ago, the University of Florida voted to deny Jeb Bush an honorary degree. By a 38-28 vote, the faculty Senate rejected the former governor’s nomination, citing concerns about some of Bush’s education initiatives, including his dismantling of affirmative action programs in the state:
In higher education circles, Bush’s greatest criticism came over his “One Florida” plan, which ended race-based admissions in state universities. Black enrollment dropped at UF and statewide after the change took effect, as critics predicted.
Bush’s policies of “rewarding and punishing schools according to students’ standardized test results and using vouchers to send certain students to private schools at public expense” also contributed to the rejection of his nomination.
Upset by this lack of Jeb Bush adoration, the conservative-controlled House Schools & Learning Council voted yesterday to force the university to rename its education school the “Jeb Bush College of Education.”
Over the faculty’s opposition, the school will now have “to erect ‘suitable markers‘ noting the college’s new name and include the revised name in all university documents, including catalogues and brochures.” The lawmakers acknowledge they “came up with the idea as an answer” to the faculty’s denial of Bush’s honorary degree.

April 11th, 2007 at 11:06 amLord, they are even hypocrites when they name buildings of education.
An Honorary degree yet. What a bunch of fakes. Jeb Bush should be ashamed.

April 11th, 2007 at 11:13 amWTF? Who in thier right mind would want to go to a school called the ‘Jeb Bush College of Education’? (probably the same people that would gladly attend Jerry Falwell’s ‘Liberty University’)
April 11th, 2007 at 11:13 amAs a graduate of UF, I deeply resent the forcing of the jeb’s name on the school. I am proud that the faculty had enough courage to reject jeb’s honorary degree and to protest this slap. Governor Crist seems like a reasonable man; the University could appeal to him for help if the University administration has enough backbone.
April 11th, 2007 at 11:15 amIsn’t “Jeb” a nickname, based on his initials?
Shouldn’t they be more formal about the name, or will this trend continue with the “Dubya School of Quantum Physics”?

April 11th, 2007 at 11:15 amWhy don’t affirmative action proponenets EVER say - many of our minority populated schools are being held HOSTAGE by the corrupt NEA and local teachers unions. The WORST teachers are often dumped in these schools rather than being fired for their ineptitude. Are none of you surprised that the remedial needs of college freshman is at the highest level ever due to poor elementary and secondary preparation? And finally, ask yourself how many kids admitted under affirmative action programs went on to graduate? The sham is BEFORE college………Shame on the NEA…
April 11th, 2007 at 11:16 amJust like a Bush to forcibly take what the people don’t give. W took the election in 2000 and Jeb takes the school’s College of Education. These bastards are so low.
April 11th, 2007 at 11:16 amAs an alumni of UF, I can’t wait to see how these new signs will be defaced. At a minimum they should be covered with feces on a daily basis to symbolize what Jeb has done to education in Florida.
April 11th, 2007 at 11:17 amas long as this family is allowed to get away with their crimes and law twisting-they will
April 11th, 2007 at 11:19 amUhhh, the honorary degree looks like the better choice. They don’t mean crap in the real world. Now the people at the University are stuck with his name on the college of business. Bummer.
What would happen if the school didn’t do anything for Jeb? Would they lose funding or something?
April 11th, 2007 at 11:19 amI guess getting even is what Republican politics is all about.
And how much will it cost the taxpayers of Florida to implement this little gem.
Lastly, how many other living people have their name slapped on government buildings. And why doesn’t Jeb Bush step in to end this nonsense? Never mind, he’s a Bush.
April 11th, 2007 at 11:19 am“…will now have to erect ‘suitable markers‘ noting the college’s new name…”
Suitable meaning misspelled! Jeb Bush Collage of Educatshun
April 11th, 2007 at 11:19 amIn another 5 years or so, the word bush will have assumed a new connotation in American English…

“man, you really bushed up that one”
“go bush yourself”
and, of course,

Thanks for the laugh.
April 11th, 2007 at 11:20 amWhat else is new. These Bush asshats have been given everything handed to them on a silver platter their entire life. They haven’t EARNED a single thing worthy of noting. Talk about elitism. The admiration of the Bushies isn’t even earned, its the result of somebody else building them up and putting on a likable persona. What’s next, Mount Bushmore.
April 11th, 2007 at 11:20 amI’m there!
April 11th, 2007 at 11:20 amI don’t think Jeb or George took anything they have, for some reason, people just want to give them things, like elections and colleges of business.

April 11th, 2007 at 11:57 amLet me summarize VV’s argument: “Look over there!”
April 11th, 2007 at 11:58 amHispanic penguins are actually pretty kick-ass.
April 11th, 2007 at 11:59 amAfter what Baby Bush (meaning Jeb) did to the school system in Florida (where I currently live), I’m surprised that this was even an issue. This is the idiot that created a “standardized” test (that he can’t even pass) to be the only qualifying criteria for graduation for Florida students. If a child does not pass the FCAT by the 12th grade, the school system will not let the child graduate. All school children have to take the test in 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 10th, and 12th grades. If the child passes once that only means that they are one step closer to getting the sheepskin, but if they fail one year, they don’t get to graduate.
The teachers here in Florida only “teach the test”, and have all but eliminated subjects not covered by the FCAT. My daughter (in 5th grade) has not had any history lessons in over 3 years, only has music class once a week, has “recess” not P.E., and hasn’t had any vocabulary words to learn in 2 years. She brings home no homework on a consistent basis, yet continues to score well in school bringing home A’s, B’s, and C’s in all her FCAT sanctioned classes.
When will it stop?!?!?! The new governor, Crist, is also a republican, and is more interested in declaring today “Florida Aquarium Day” than working on the education system, health care system, rising housing costs and insurance rates. Vote them ALL out!
April 11th, 2007 at 12:00 pmso I guess the Bush family forgot which day is April Folls Day?????
April 11th, 2007 at 12:01 pmRight? pleeeease?
Disgusting and will disgrace the University of Florida to have this joker’s name as though he is someone to be revered and honored. The Board of Regents of UF need to stop this shameless idolatry and stop it right now. Jeb Bush’s name will be one of disgrace once his activitieis vis-a-vis Florida’s stolen election of 2000 are made public. Then what will UF do?? Someone needs to begin an investigation into Jebbie’s illegal activities during bro’s election of 2000 and then this idolatry will end.
April 11th, 2007 at 12:03 pmIs it next to the Neil Bush School of Businesss?
April 11th, 2007 at 12:04 pmLet’s get to the bottom of BushElectionGate fast! There was a programmer in Florida who met with Jeb before the election of 2000 and was asked to hack into a computer. Let’s get that guy’s name quick!
Also, just google Jeb’s family - criminal arrests all over the place. Buying his name into a position of honor is dispicable and sooooo totally Bush Crime Family that it’s no longer funny - or interesting - just plain disgusting and reprehensible.
April 11th, 2007 at 12:05 pmAnd I’d begin with Katherine Harris who was Dukie Cunningham’s big buddy…..
April 11th, 2007 at 12:06 pmKatherine Harris is a laughingstock the same as Jebbie is considered to be an JackassGovernor in Florida. When he left office, the people of Florida said “good riddance” and they’re elated that he’s gone.

April 11th, 2007 at 12:10 pmThey cite the dismantling of the the racist program affirmative action as reason not to give him an honoary degree. As we all know affirmative action has nothing to do with skill or intelligence-only race, so maybe the real reason is that he was qualified, but since he is white they had to worry about quotas instead.

April 11th, 2007 at 12:13 pmProud Dem-
I agree that the current set up for standardized tests in Florida is flawed. Here in Arizona there is a similar test called the AIMS that students need to pass to graduate. I think that having a test to graduate is a good idea, because we have a lot of people graduating that can barely read. However, teaching to the test is horrible and other subjects need to be covered, like history as you say. I wonder what the best solution is? Personally, I think public school overall is a joke. I think it should all be privatized. I have issues with trusting the government to teach my children.

Yeah, that’s the answer for all Republicans…… PRIVATIZE!!!
It worked so well for the military, Katrina, Walter Reed….. Hey it should work for schools, perhaps it will be the first time that privatizing does not fail…..
I doubt it though!
The issue is keeping you Repubs from telling the schools how they have to teach….. When I went to school, things were fine….. Since then though, you Repubs want to tell the schools how they must teach the kids, that they can’t discipline them, and that they must conform to a special test in order to get any money.
Thanks for destroying something that has worked well for hundreds of years in only a decade.

Really, do you live in my district in Illinois. Because very little federal money goes toward education anymore. To raise money for a school district the local taxpayers have to vote on a referendum and pay for it.
April 11th, 2007 at 12:38 pmNice talking point though. If your district is SO Republican that any referendum to raise taxes for schools isn’t even brought up that’s your problem. I moved to a district with a great educational district and I vote for the money it asks for.
Now you want to DENY MY CHILD a decent education.
Once again, changing the rules of the game when you’re losing. What a bunch of whiny babies Barbara Bush raised.

In a private market teachers would make much more, because there would be incentive to hire the best because it would mean more enrollment and more revenue. As for the private services in Iraq are not true free market. They are no bid contracts-that is not privitization.
April 11th, 2007 at 12:39 pmAlso how exactly is the military privatized? A true private business does not have no bid contract -RB
What??? Halliburton got loads of no-bid contracts. Blaackwater is a private security firm operating in Iraq. April 11th, 2007 at 12:42 pmReally, do you live in my district in Illinois. Because very little federal money goes toward education anymore. To raise money for a school district the local taxpayers have to vote on a referendum and pay for it.
Nice talking point though. If your district is SO Republican that any referendum to raise taxes for schools isn’t even brought up that’s your problem. I moved to a district with a great educational district and I vote for the money it asks for.
Now you want to DENY MY CHILD a decent education.
Comment by shane — April 11, 2007 @ 12:38 pm
Why don’t you want Proud Dem’s 5th grade daughter to have a decent education? He has said that he would prefer private school but cannot afford it. Why not give more people the option? Your district is the exception not the rule. Fortunately you have people that care about the schools? Do you think the same votes would end up like that everyplace in the U.S.? Maybe you should think about more than yourself on this matter.

I went to a private school from 1st-3rd grade (thanks to my grandmother), and the rest of my schooling was at a variety of public schools (elementary, middle, high). I have to say that while I did enjoy my time in the private school, I learned more about the “real world” in public school.
Private school was an Episcopalian private school and was VERY strict on the religious aspect of teaching. We had to go to chapel at least 3 times a week.
Public school had more extracurricular activities than I could keep up with. I only chose one, but if I could have I would have done more than just that one.
I will say that to this day, I am glad I went to public school. Of course, these schools were NOT in Florida….

April 11th, 2007 at 1:53 pmThis thread is not about affirmative action or the viability of public schools. It’s about how the fix is always in for members of a powerful aristocracy. The Bush family represents an American aristocracy which is more than 200 years old. The president was the 17th legacy at Yale in a line which goes back to the 1840’s. He’s related to the Queen of England for crissakes! If you’re a Bush, you can get C’s in undergraduate work and still get into Harvard Business School. If you’re a Bush, you can get away with bilking the taxpayers out of over $1 billion in a Savings and Loan scandal. If you’re a Bush you can engage in blatant insider trading knowing your Dad will not allow any justice department investigations. And, evidently if you’re a Bush, it doesn’t matter if a University feels you’re not qualified for an honorary degree, your friends in the legislature will get you that degree anyway.
Affirmative action???!!! How about affirmative action for incompetent bluebloods! Nobody complains about that.

Congressman Ron Paul, who is running as a Republican, voted against the Wars, He has never voted to raise taxes.
He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.
He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership.
He has never voted to raise congressional pay.
He has never taken a government-paid junket.
He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.
He voted against the Patriot Act.
He voted against regulating the Internet.
He voted against the Iraq war.
He is the author of “Neo-Conned” which is now considered terrorist material.
He does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program.
He returns a portion of his annual congressional office budget to the U.S. treasury every year.
Congressman Paul introduces numerous pieces of substantive legislation each year, probably more than any single member of Congress.
Can Hilary claim these? Can any Democrat claim these?
He wants to undo everything that the Bush’s and Clintons have done to harm this country and they have done a lot.
Ron Paul is the only one that is running that has said his dream is to re-instate the Bill of Rights and Constitution. Has any of the neo-liberals or democrats declared this?
