Florida Legislature Forces University To Idolize Jeb Bush

jeb.jpgTwo weeks ago, the University of Florida voted to deny Jeb Bush an honorary degree. By a 38-28 vote, the faculty Senate rejected the former governor’s nomination, citing concerns about some of Bush’s education initiatives, including his dismantling of affirmative action programs in the state:

In higher education circles, Bush’s greatest criticism came over his “One Florida” plan, which ended race-based admissions in state universities. Black enrollment dropped at UF and statewide after the change took effect, as critics predicted.

Bush’s policies of “rewarding and punishing schools according to students’ standardized test results and using vouchers to send certain students to private schools at public expense” also contributed to the rejection of his nomination.

Upset by this lack of Jeb Bush adoration, the conservative-controlled House Schools & Learning Council voted yesterday to force the university to rename its education school the “Jeb Bush College of Education.”

Over the faculty’s opposition, the school will now have “to erect ‘suitable markers‘ noting the college’s new name and include the revised name in all university documents, including catalogues and brochures.” The lawmakers acknowledge they “came up with the idea as an answer” to the faculty’s denial of Bush’s honorary degree.

Digg It!

After what Baby Bush (meaning Jeb) did to the school system in Florida (where I currently live), I’m surprised that this was even an issue. This is the idiot that created a “standardized” test (that he can’t even pass) to be the only qualifying criteria for graduation for Florida students. If a child does not pass the FCAT by the 12th grade, the school system will not let the child graduate. All school children have to take the test in 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 10th, and 12th grades. If the child passes once that only means that they are one step closer to getting the sheepskin, but if they fail one year, they don’t get to graduate.
The teachers here in Florida only “teach the test”, and have all but eliminated subjects not covered by the FCAT. My daughter (in 5th grade) has not had any history lessons in over 3 years, only has music class once a week, has “recess” not P.E., and hasn’t had any vocabulary words to learn in 2 years. She brings home no homework on a consistent basis, yet continues to score well in school bringing home A’s, B’s, and C’s in all her FCAT sanctioned classes.

When will it stop?!?!?! The new governor, Crist, is also a republican, and is more interested in declaring today “Florida Aquarium Day” than working on the education system, health care system, rising housing costs and insurance rates. Vote them ALL out!

    Proud Dem-

I agree that the current set up for standardized tests in Florida is flawed. Here in Arizona there is a similar test called the AIMS that students need to pass to graduate. I think that having a test to graduate is a good idea, because we have a lot of people graduating that can barely read. However, teaching to the test is horrible and other subjects need to be covered, like history as you say. I wonder what the best solution is? Personally, I think public school overall is a joke. I think it should all be privatized. I have issues with trusting the government to teach my children.

Yeah, that’s the answer for all Republicans…… PRIVATIZE!!!

It worked so well for the military, Katrina, Walter Reed….. Hey it should work for schools, perhaps it will be the first time that privatizing does not fail…..

    I doubt it though!

The issue is keeping you Repubs from telling the schools how they have to teach….. When I went to school, things were fine….. Since then though, you Repubs want to tell the schools how they must teach the kids, that they can’t discipline them, and that they must conform to a special test in order to get any money.

Thanks for destroying something that has worked well for hundreds of years in only a decade.

Nice talking point though. If your district is SO Republican that any referendum to raise taxes for schools isn’t even brought up that’s your problem. I moved to a district with a great educational district and I vote for the money it asks for.

Nice talking point though. If your district is SO Republican that any referendum to raise taxes for schools isn’t even brought up that’s your problem. I moved to a district with a great educational district and I vote for the money it asks for.
Now you want to DENY MY CHILD a decent education.

    Comment by shane — April 11, 2007 @ 12:38 pm

Why don’t you want Proud Dem’s 5th grade daughter to have a decent education? He has said that he would prefer private school but cannot afford it. Why not give more people the option? Your district is the exception not the rule. Fortunately you have people that care about the schools? Do you think the same votes would end up like that everyplace in the U.S.? Maybe you should think about more than yourself on this matter.

If you’re a Bush, you can get away with bilking the taxpayers out of over $1 billion in a Savings and Loan scandal. If you’re a Bush you can engage in blatant insider trading knowing your Dad will not allow any justice department investigations. And, evidently if you’re a Bush, it doesn’t matter if a University feels you’re not qualified for an honorary degree, your friends in the legislature will get you that degree anyway.

This disgusts me…as a Floridan who recently graduated from Florida State I know first hand the effects Jeb Bush’s policies have had on aspiring minority college students…The fact that UF black balled bush and the admnistration retaliated by making UF honor him shows two facts about Florida:
Fact #1. Florida, contrary to popular belief is NOT a Red State.
Fact #2. #1 doesn’t matter because there always some Neo Cons in the upper echelon of Florida government (ex. Katherine Harris aka the Devil) that will stop at nothing to make Fact #1 disappear.

  194. J. Hatch says:

Guys, don’t be fooled. I read about 3/4 of the way down the comments, and felt compelled to respond.

I am a teacher, and every day I see that non “core” subjects are shortchanged, to ensure that students are able to pass the standardized tests mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act. Overall, these tests produce more graduates that have a basic proficiency at math and English. However, on the whole, the shortchange students at both ends of the spectrum. Exceptional students do not get the opportunity to reach their fullest potential, because they are sidelined from administrators that know that they are already at a level that will pass the tests and ensure future funding. Students from the lower end of the achievement spectrum spend hours a day in “recovery” classes, to attempt to get them to those minimum standards, rather than teaching them skills that they might actually benefit from. ie: trying to drill basic algebra into their heads, rather than teach them to balance a checkbook or figure out compound interest.

Now, I am usually not a conspiracy minded guy, but the Republican party has a vested interest in uneducated masses, and an elite, well educated ruling class. And I think that is exactly what they are trying to push. In their future, there will be bad public schools, bad private schools, and the good private schools will simply raise their tuition, so the vouchers won’t be enough to get the masses in. And the republicans will be a few steps closer to fully segregating our society based on wealth, because the money will hold the key to knowledge.

If the language of the legislation states that the words “Jeb Bush” must be included in the college of education’s name, but does not state that the name of the school must be exactly “Jeb Bush College of Education”, then it’s possible that that this edict as written by the FLA legislature does not specifically prohibit the addition of extra words in the college’s title. If that’s the case, I urge the university to comply fully with the law, but to add one word to all the placards so that they read “Jeb Bush Sucks College of Education”. ”While Gov. Bush appreciates the gesture, he believes public service is an honor in and of itself and naming a building, road or program after an elected official will diminish that service,” said Levesque in an e-mail. “Additionally, the most appropriate time to name something after an elected official is after their passing.”

There is no way to win a war against an IDEOLOGY, because you don’t know who your enemy is. It could be anybody. Honorary degrees for ex-governors from a State university are usually totally routine.

The Faculty didn’t like Jeb’s policies, so they slapped his face.

The Legislature then punched the Faculty’s face, to remind them that they’re servants of the State government — which pays their wages.

And that the elected representatives of the people set policy, not the Faculty.

If you put your face out and ask for a punch, you’ll usually get what you ask for.

  249. S.M. Stirling says:

He LOST the first time, appropriately so, and thereafter schemed with the mafia GOP to make sure his second run, uh, was “successful.” You across America have NO idea of the corrupt election fraud that goes on in this state EVERY ELECTION. The Republican-dominated redneck legislature in Tally is being quoted by the St. Pete Times that this is a “whole new day” in Tally now that Jebthro is gone! He was despised by the Rethugs as well as the Dems! An arrogant, clueless Texas carpetbagger who travelled to Florida in the early 80’s when the name BUSH was MUDD after his bro Neilsy was convicted but didn’t do the jail time for his key role in the $1B Silverado S&L fiasco. Jebthro wasted no time in doing what the Bushes do best–illegal business activities, partnering up with a Cubano in crooked South Florida real estate development!

“Honorary degrees for ex-governors from a State university are usually totally routine.”

Like to see some stats on that but not a big deal.

“The Legislature then punched the Faculty’s face, to remind them that they’re servants of the State government — which pays their wages.
And that the elected representatives of the people set policy, not the Faculty.”

Serious problem here with mixing definitions. Using the faculty for partisan politics and the aggrandizement of a political official is not what elected representatives are granted the power to do in this case. Quality education and research is the policy goal, not political servitude.

I think UF should give Jeb Bush a “Certificate of Attendance” for all he has done for education here in florida. Instead of improving education, we turnout students every year that cannot get a job, because instead of received a HS diploma, they receive a “Certificate of Attendance”. It is time we stop teaching the FCAT and rewarding the schools and teachers by how many students pass the FCAT. We need to bring back a rounded education. Spend more time teaching them to read, not taking PE away so that they can spend more time on the FCAT.

    4) Standardized testing is going to be the downfall of civilization. ESPECIALLY FCAT. End of story.
    5) Affirmative action is unnecessary and a waste of time. I’d rather admit people based on whether or not they actually plan to better themselves and not waste resources on people who are just taking the free ride.
