“ABC News has learned that the Pentagon is considering extending the tours of duty for every active duty soldier in Iraq and Afghanistan. Forget small extensions and trickles of National Guard troops. Under the proposal, deployments for active duty soldiers would be extended from the current 12 months to 15 months.” A decision by Defense Secretary Gates “is expected as early as this week.”
Yeah! Way to support those troops Republicans! Nice work all around.
April 11th, 2007 at 11:01 amI think that the next time a Republican tries to compare Bush’s adventures to WWII, he needs to be asked publicly why we limit tours at all. Soldiers in WWII weren’t coming back after a year.
April 11th, 2007 at 11:02 amSupporting our troops. Woo.
April 11th, 2007 at 11:02 amI posted this in anther thread with a better headline.
Not even a h/t thanks TP ;).
April 11th, 2007 at 11:02 amAny solider that dies during that extension should be buried in Bush’s backyard as a daily reminder that the death is COMPLETELY the fault of our Idiot In Charge.
April 11th, 2007 at 11:04 amBecause supporting our troops means keeping them in the line of fire for as long as we can keep them there! You don’t like your soldiers staying in Iraq for a year longer than they should be, protecting your FREEDOM?!! Then yer a terrist!!!
April 11th, 2007 at 11:04 amI wonder at what point does the military quit voting republican?
April 11th, 2007 at 11:06 amAnd this is going to be blamed on the Democrats.
Even though this is occurring before the “surge” is even complete. This is occurring even as the 3 – 6 month “surge” is already being extended into “well past September” according to military spokemen.
Bush will veto the bill, but he is already blaming the democrats for that too. That is his only defensive move — blame the democrats.
April 11th, 2007 at 11:07 amIt is time to make it MANDATORY that Dimson attend EACH AND EVERY FUNERAL of a troop killed in Iraq.
HE works for US. It’s time that we got that through our thick skulls, and started to demand some things.
April 11th, 2007 at 11:12 amOld Bushies is insane. We need to inpeach Cheney and him NOW. This is enough.
April 11th, 2007 at 11:13 amMe:
It is a GOP-propelled myth that our military vote Rethuglican.

Everything I have read indicates that active duty military vote Republican something like two to one over Democrats, although I expect that to change by 2008.
April 11th, 2007 at 11:31 amW’s endless “surge” goes on……..
April 11th, 2007 at 11:32 amSupport the Troops! Keep ‘em in the meatgrinder as long as possible!
April 11th, 2007 at 11:34 am/sarcasm
What we need TP and other new’s sources to do is print stats on all the neglect our troop’s are going through..We need accounting on all their poor pay, slow medical treatment, the amount that have famalies on welfare, maimed, all the hospitals that are not keeping up with their treatment, all of it..
Then we need total accountability of how Hallaburton and the other contractors have used the money, their contract’s and where they have failed….Enough has been covered up and still many vet’s are being ignored and shuffled to the curb with out needed care or housing….Does any one here know how many are living in their car’s or hiding in wooded areas.?..This is turning into another nam disgrace and no one is continuing with follow up…..Blessings
April 11th, 2007 at 11:36 amI didn’t think they had to “force” these tours on the troops. Doesn’t the administration keep telling us that the troops are “happy” to go. They are volunteers after all. They should have known that could have happened. They should have known that “W” was going to be an easily lead automoton for Dick Cheney’s maniacal imperialst agenda.
April 11th, 2007 at 11:38 amGet paid while you can! The US is giving away billions!

Yeah remember how hard the GOP worked for those Military absentee-ballots in 2000/2004? They didn’t do for no reason, they needed those votes. Let’s see if they take a similiar interest now that they have our guys stuck in a no-win war halfway around the world. I’d bet not.
April 11th, 2007 at 11:52 amMore and more military started to turn in 2005 against bush. This year the largest turn with walter reed exposure and the treatment of the wounded at the VA.
No More Rpublican Killers in the white house, senate or the house of congress.
Plaster your local newspaper Forum boards with all that republicans had done that is negative.
Start with Kentucky
April 11th, 2007 at 12:03 pmThis is the same mentality many baseball teams used to use with their ace pitchers. Burn them out and trade them when they can’t continue to cut it. Surely this also has the republican corporate mindset. It must be the cheap way out.
Using this thinking process the Army might look ahead to the time that all their men and women will reside at Walter Reed. Then they can then just hide them from view.
April 11th, 2007 at 12:09 pmIf most of the military voted for Bush…then they wanted this.
Elections have consequences.
April 11th, 2007 at 12:56 pmAnd just think; while the military is leaving the troops already in Iraq over there all so much longer, the Air Force is calling for a troop reduction of 42,000 here at home with a recent program budget decision, and I am sure the other military branches are doing something similar. How is that for supporting the troops!

April 11th, 2007 at 5:17 pmSorry to keep repeating…I’m retired military (I repeat so you know where I’m coming from).
It’s true, most military members do vote Republican. I can understand the officer corps leaning GOP, what I never understood in my 22 years was the enlisted voting the same way. I entered under Nixon and retired under Clinton. THe only significant pay raises, quality of life benefits, concern for me and my family came from Carter and Clinton. While the GOP presidents may (I don’t feel like doing the research so I emphasize may) have budgeted more $, they bought “toys” (B1s, 2, F22s, 117s, Cruise missles, etc). They ignored us enlisted folk.
Still the enlisted force (especially NCOs-I’m a retired SNCO) contined to Love Regan, BushI and hate Carter and Clinton.
I never figured that out.
Again sorry for the length, being verbose, watching my Bears and having a JW Black are among my failings.

April 11th, 2007 at 6:07 pmYEAH, Gates, JUST TIRE OUT THE TROOPS ENDLESSLY AND KILL OFF MORE OF THEM IN THE CRIMINAL CHIMPya MANNER—LET THEIR DEATHS FROM BEING BURNT OUT AND LESS CAREFUL IN COMBAT BE ON YOUR, CHIMPya, FRANKENCheney, Rove, Rice, GONZO(IS HE STILL HERE?????) and Bushland Uber Allies’ HEADS!!!!!
April 11th, 2007 at 11:36 pmId like to see the people who made this decision stay away from there families for 15 months. The decisions that have been made are unfair to the men and women who are fighting for our country. I served this country and support this country and our freedom. When is enough enough? How much more of the lives of the men and women over there are they to give up? They are not only soliders over there they are humans and have families and lives.
