“The White House said Wednesday it had mishandled Republican Party-sponsored e-mail accounts used by nearly two dozen presidential aides, resulting in the loss of an undetermined number of e-mails concerning official White House business.”
White House spokesman Scott Stanzel “could not say what had been lost, and said the White House is working to recover as many as they can. The White House has now shut off employees’ ability to delete e-mails on the separate accounts, and is briefing staffers on how to better make determinations about when — and when not — to use them, Stanzel said.”
UPDATE: The Politico has more details:
This is a big problem for the White House, and Waxman said it raised ’serious legal and security concerns’ about the e-mail related activities of Bush administration aides.
Waxman’s staff are supposed to meet with RNC officials on Thursday about the “rnchq” and “gwb.43″ e-mail accounts, which some White House officials, like Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove, use for authorized political work. Waxman suspects that White House aides were using the accounts to evade presidential record-keeping requirements.
The Politico also reports that the White House held a private briefing on the situation for some reporters, who relayed the message, “it’s really bad for the White House.”

The Dems need to send in a herd of geeks to assess the situation. They’ll find ‘em.
April 11th, 2007 at 8:48 pmFunny how they release this info. when the Imus story is getting wall to wall coverage. Prediction…this story will disappear faster than I can type this post.

17 minutes of missing tapes anybody?

April 11th, 2007 at 8:56 pmThat doesn’t sound suspicious at all…
April 11th, 2007 at 8:57 pmDid Fitz get these?
April 11th, 2007 at 8:58 pmWhat a surprise.
April 11th, 2007 at 9:03 pmHow does the White House control RNC email accounts? Wouldn’t those be on RNC servers under the control of the RNC?
Seems like either each individual White House employee deleted his/her own emails, or someone at the RNC did.
Either way, how did the White House come to know about this mass deletion and announce it?
Sounds fishy to me.
April 11th, 2007 at 9:04 pmBBzzzzzzzzzzzzttttttttt
Wrong answer. All data is retrievable from disks even after pathetic vain attempts to delete by RNC. Ask the DOJ they can scrub any database.
April 11th, 2007 at 9:04 pmDid anyone really expect that they’d produce the evidence of their own criminality? Someday, all Americans will come to the realization that you can elect Republicans and expect them to serve your interests. It’s the 21st century equivalent of organized crime.

April 11th, 2007 at 9:06 pm.
I wonder how long it will be before we see a frame from some security camera showing someone spilling their Starbucks onto their keyboard, unwittingly deleting all those e-mails?
Makes me think back to my all-time favorite bumper sticker of 1974: “IMPEACH THE SONOFABITCH”

April 11th, 2007 at 9:06 pmMy former employer paid nearly $15M and lost a $1.6B lawsuit in part because of emails that were “lost.” In that case it was an oversight, but it doesn’t change the fact that they were responsible for producing them and couldn’t.
The interesting thing about these RNC emails is that since they are party-sponsored, any communications thru them are to my knowledge not shielded by executive privilege. My guess, the drives on their mail server were recently replaced- and the originals some how met with extremely high temperatures. That usually causes the loss of eviden^h^h^h^h^h^hdata.

Hmmmmmmm!
Oh boy! All of the e-mails to Jeff Gannon are still in the computer?
John
April 11th, 2007 at 9:10 pmThese emails even when you delete them don’t get deleted off the server. The default time that exchange server keeps mails after the user has deleted them is 29 days. Ask for the backup tapes. If they say that they don’t backup, then call in the forensic recovery people. They can get anything off the drives. When are these lies going to be held responsible. I swear there is a speciel place in hell for these people.
April 11th, 2007 at 9:17 pmREPUBLICANS DON’T REALLY CARE ABOUT IRAQ
It’s so sad how Republican politicians are obviously lying to America about how important the war in Iraq is. Or they are in deep deep denial.
Look at Bush, McCain and all the other Republicans in Congress voting lockstep behind Bush on prolonging our military occupation of Iraq. The war is life and death, they spout. It’s so hard for our military but they must endure for this war is critical for our nation, they cry. We must win. We cannot lose. Our future depends on it. Blah blah blah.
And yet there is such a simple and obvious fact that puts the lie to these statements, big time:
There is no draft. The Republicans say we don’t need the draft.
If this is a life and death can’t lose situation in Iraq then why aren’t Republicans acting like it? Why aren’t they implementing a draft? Why do they claim we don’t need it? Why why why? Because they are grossly overstating the importance of Iraq and they know it. The Republicans say this is life and death and our chances are far from certain, and yet at the same time they say we don’t need a draft. Huh?
Tsk tsk tsk. Another huge lie from the worst bunch of lying politicians in American history. They are a disgrace. A blight on America.
Republicans misled America into this war in Iraq and haven’t stopped since. I for one think it’s time to put an end to it.
April 11th, 2007 at 9:23 pmTHIS EMAIL SCANDAL IS THE KEY TO IMPEACHMENT
Mark my words. The Republicans are S-scared. This is not a case where the coverup is worse than the crime. WE HAVE GOT TO GET THOSE EMAILS. THEY MUST BE DAMNING!
EVERYONE THINK THINK THINK HOW TO GET THOSE EMAILS. THEY MAY BE STORED TEMPORARILY ON SERVERS SOMEWHERE. THINK ABOUT THE CHAINS OF CUSTODY. THINK ABOUT WHO MAY HAVE HAD ACCESS.
THIS MAY LEAD TO IMPEACHMENT

April 11th, 2007 at 9:25 pmPerhaps they are with Jose Padilla’s missing interrogation tape…or Bush’s National Guard records. The funny thing is that thanks to the beloved Terrorist Surveillance Program, its hard to imagine there aren’t still a few copies somewhere. April 11th, 2007 at 9:28 pmWait a minute. Did not Waxman ask the WH to save all of these emails weeks ago? I seem to remember this. Waxman needs to seize the servers and hard drives right away. I guess only the ‘key’ emails were deleted ‘accidently’.
April 11th, 2007 at 9:28 pmCongress needs to seize the computers… and yes, bring on the geeks. Unless they totally wiped the drive, which I doubt since they can barely use email, the Google and the Internets, email info should still be there.
What about a nice subpoena for the server or provider they were using? Yes, it is supposedly through the RNC, but, did they wipe all records? What about backups?
If the FBI et al are surveilling the whole damn country, courtesy of phone companies and ISP’s, then these emails still exist.
Congress needs to quit wasting valuable time and get on the ball here before these buffoons get wise and start trashing computer systems.
April 11th, 2007 at 9:29 pmMail Server
The mail server will have a tape back-up and the tapes will be stored off-site. If Sen. Leahy gets the right advice, he’ll be able to get a subpoena out and track down the techie who has a tray full of tapes of the RNC mail server.
Odd, isn’t it, that tapes might bring down TWO Republican administrations.
April 11th, 2007 at 9:29 pmZooey,

Of course Dubya has no trouble walking. His brain must weigh less than an ounce. Well, he may have trouble walking when he’s drinking.
I sure wonder if George W. is drinking? This guy has enough problems to drive anyone to drink.
Everything he touches turns into a scandal. There must be a lot of tears in his beer.

April 11th, 2007 at 9:37 pmA suggestion:
Congress: “Mr. President, please produce the E-mail copies forthwith.
Congress: “Mr. President, here is a subpoena for the previously requested documents.”
Congress: “Mr. President you are now in Contempt of Congress, a felony.”
Congress: “Mr. Ex-President you have been charged with a high crime, impeached, removed from office, and sentenced to 20 years in federal prison.”
Guard: “Move it Jack, your hole is down there.”

I think old Georgie’s been drinking for at least the last year. He has that look about him, and he’s aged so much since the 2006 SOTU address. That’s not conscience, since he has none.
There might be tears in Chimpy’s beer, but they’re not his own, that’s for sure. More likely the tears of the survivors of the hundreds of thousands of dead he’s responsible for…..
April 11th, 2007 at 9:43 pmThey don’t have a backup system? Who believe’s their sh*t?
April 11th, 2007 at 9:47 pmThis is a clear and blatant violation of the Presidential Records Act.
Hey Nancy…if you’re not busy, the country would appreciate it if you put impeachment back ‘on the table’. Kthx.

Wishing real hard……
April 11th, 2007 at 9:50 pmThe data is never gone unless the hard drive is destroyed. If I were Congress, I’d be checking the credit cards of some of these higher officials, or checking the RNC budgeting stuff. Thermite does a really good job destroying hard drives, and you can pinpoint that stuff. It’s quick-burn and makes any data the hard drive had useless.
But unless the hard drive is totally destroyed, data can be retrieved, just to varying levels of integrity. They’ve made hard drives a lot tougher, to the point where they can fall into the ground and survive - so an external burn wouldn’t be anything a lab couldn’t fix for less than the cost of customizing Abramoff’s car using US tax dollars.
April 11th, 2007 at 9:50 pmSorry guys, this won’t lead to impeachment. The media won’t even cover it. It’ll end up in the scap heap with the Downing St. Memos, the documents from Cheney’s secret energy meetings and the evidence of 75,000 blacks scrubbed from Florida’s voter rolls etc.
Those servers have probably been melted down to liquid and the metal sent to Lockheed to make a bomb to drop on innocent Iraqis.

April 11th, 2007 at 9:58 pmLarry, you’re a pessimist… but you are probably dead on right. If it weren’t true, that would be pretty damn funny.
I bet Olberman covers it though.
April 11th, 2007 at 9:58 pmYou know as soon as word got out about the separate accounts, any incriminating emails were wiped. We need to be sneakier than the foxes to catch them killing the chickens.
April 11th, 2007 at 10:01 pmTIME TO BAN THE GOP FOREVER!
April 11th, 2007 at 10:02 pmIt’s ok. Just use coersive interrogation techniques on all White House aids and officials who ever sent an email. I’m sure we’ll get the truth then.
April 11th, 2007 at 10:04 pmThis Hatch Act claim is complete B/S.
They flagrantly ignore it by hosting political briefings with non-Hatched employees, such as the Doan “let’s help our team” event over at GSA…
Yet…
They set up a secret e-mail system that has conveniently lost all e-mails out of an abundance of caution around the Hatch Act?
I really don’t think so. Heads will roll.
April 11th, 2007 at 10:04 pmOT I’m Keith Olberman’s biggest fan. Yet I’m disappointed he hasn’t commented on this story. Its as egregious as anything Don Imus did…
MSNBC Re-Writes History
Sat Apr 07, 2007
MSNBC has put together a slide-show offering a brief history of Iran. They’ve managed to go back further than 1979 - impressive for a mainstream outlet.
But, amazingly, they’ve contrived to ignore Mohammed Mossadeq, the democratically elected prime minister of Iran who in 1953 was overthrown in a UK/CIA-backed coup, which installed the brutal and corrupt Shah in his place.
The overthrow of Mossadeq is probably, together with the 1979 Islamic revolution, the seminal moment in the history of 20th century Iran, and MSNBC has just wiped it out for political convenience.
Mossadeq had dared to nationalise the Iranian oil industry at the expense of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (now British Petroleum), and such defiance could obviously not be tolerated by the masters of the world.
The slide-show also makes no mention of the fact that the U.S. supported Iraq in its aggression against Iran, which left up a million people dead on all sides.
That MSNBC has completely obliterated the U.S.’ history of aggression towards Iran at a time when the Bush administration is trying to drum up militaristic fervour is an utter disgrace.
April 11th, 2007 at 10:05 pmUmmm…LOST the emails?! Not credible.

April 11th, 2007 at 10:25 pm#48 is correct. . . it reality, it takes quiet a bit or work to completely remove all traces of work, messages, etc. on a computer. If they data wipe is complete, then it wasn’t accidental.
April 11th, 2007 at 10:25 pmThis is like the Eddie Haskills of school days saying “the dog ate my homework.” This will not fly.
April 11th, 2007 at 10:28 pmSpkr. Pelosi might want to soon reconsider putting impeachment back on the “table” because the White House scandals are rising to a level where they are boiling over.
This story, the hearings with Gonzales next week, and countless other lies and coverups may even cause the public to demand impeachment from Pelosi - she may not even have to initiate it.
Zooey,
You’re right about George W. not shedding a tear. Not George W. Bush.
Yes, George W. has aged a lot. It’s quite obvious Laura Bush has had plastic surgery. While George is looking worse, and worse, Laura Bush is looking better, and better. She’s had major nips and tucks, more than Botox.

April 11th, 2007 at 10:30 pmTalk abut being served up a big, steaming pile of BULLSHIT…
Really, folks, isn’t it time we just RICOed the whole damn GOP? They certainly meet the criteria, as I understand it - when 3 or more people (Bush, Cheney, and Rove, for starters) systematically engage in criminal conduct across interstate lines. Sure sounds like the Bush Admin and the GOP to me. Hell, Rudy helped write the damned thing. We can just ask him!
RIOC, RICO, RICO, RICO, RICO!!!!
April 11th, 2007 at 10:31 pmThis is a slam dunk!
Subpoena the networ/email administrator; he/she will tell the committee where those email are. They are either on a backup server run by the RNC, on a disk drive or tape used for backup or archived on such backup devices.
Then, when the emails are found it will mean that the GOP, RNC and WH lied to avoid subpoena - jail time would be in order.
April 11th, 2007 at 10:32 pmOf course those emails can be retrieved. What kind of pressure can we bring to bear to assure that those “lost” emails see the light of day? Also, I wonder what would happen if the WH were served w/a subpoena for those hard drives?
April 11th, 2007 at 10:33 pmIt’s over.
Finally, it’s all over. It’s just a matter of what order the resignations continue to fall.
They can’t find a War Czar or a new AG because all the usual suspects realize it’s all over as well and don’t want to be associated with this stinkbomb of an administration.
Now they can’t find the emails.
Like Waxman’s gonna just say “Thanks for looking” and go away.
April 11th, 2007 at 10:36 pmThis will be what brings them down.
The White House briefed reporters, but NOT Congress? Not very credible release of information when the White House knew those were among the very things Congres had already requested seeing. They know enough to say it involves dozens of staff, but not what dates?
No worries. Metro DC is chock full of forensic computer experts. I’ll bet the government employees a few hundred already. They’ll be able to recover everything. And just in case the WH can’t seem to find stuff, because they’ve only just gotten around to telling dozens of staff to stop erasing it, I’m sure the RNC and its outsourced computer services providers have plenty of backup. It’ll all be recovered before Karl has time for another fund raiser with the Federalist Society.
April 11th, 2007 at 10:41 pmWhile George is looking worse, and worse, Laura Bush is looking better, and better. She’s had major nips and tucks, more than Botox.
John
I don’t know, John, I wouldn’t say better — tighter, maybe. If her eyes get any more “uplifted” she’s not going to be able to open them. :D
April 11th, 2007 at 10:42 pmIt will be interesting seeing Waxman and others politely inquire at length about just what the protocols were and how they were breached. But I don’t think even White House chief of security, Dr. James Knodel, thinks there’s an “Ooops” defense to serial violations of the Presidential Records Act.
April 11th, 2007 at 10:45 pmMore Republican scumbaggery and truth dodging. Who would have known.
-GSD
April 11th, 2007 at 10:49 pmIt’s important to understand that Bush and company aren’t really lying to me and you - they know we’re not that stupid. They’re not covering up their crimes from us. They know we know that they’re a bunch of criminal sociopaths. They are telling these lies to their own base. They are covering up the crime because the know that their base is so gulliable stupid and sheepish as to be this easily fooled - er ah what I really mean is self fooled.
The Republickin base wants to be lied to - they want to believe that the IncompetentCorruptAmericanPrince was chosen by God to be their leader. They want to believe there is nothing untoward to the AUSA purge.
That is what Norquist meant when he said that they don’t really care about Iraq - that the base are just for Bush period.
Bush, Murdoch, Robertson, Abramoff, the neocons, Ralph Reed, Newt, “the new world order”, Malkin, and all the rest are not the base - they are the preditors of the base.
Bush etal lie to them because they need to be lied to just like an addict needs a fix.
We are all just spectators to this dance macabre…… problem is 1) the preditors and the prey could care less about the destruction of our (yours and mine) country and 2) the damage is becoming irreparable.
April 11th, 2007 at 10:50 pmMarie,
This is also like the Larry Mondellos of school days. Larry was always in trouble and his mother would say, “Wait till your father gets home.” His father never got home because he was an nonexistent character on Leave It to Beaver.
I sure wish 41 would get home, though, and give 43 a whippin’ for his misdeeds.
I read an article online several weeks ago by a professor in the Baltimore Sun. He thought impeachment was a no-go. There’s not much time left, and President Dick Cheney is not an appealing thought.

April 11th, 2007 at 11:08 pmThere must be some retreaval expert that can get into the computers and find the lost data. IMMEDIATELY. These people are the worst evil things to exist in one administration in a long time, maybe ever.
The only reason I am not a screaming ranting mess is that I know I will be able to see the demise of the cabal and their horses.

April 11th, 2007 at 11:18 pmLike I’ve been telling anyone who will listen to me, those “lost” emails and all the rest of the emails still exist on numerous computers all across America. Every single one of them.
April 11th, 2007 at 11:19 pmYou can delete all the emails you want to delete from your own computer, but they still exist on your network’s email server, your ISP’s servers, the recipient’s network email server, ISP and personal computer.
Couple these facts with the fact that email passes though numerous servers on the ISP side AND ISP’s have built in redundancy (at least two servers mirrored) and the only conclusion you can come up with is that every email ever sent since the advent of email is still theoretically recoverable.
It was my job to dig up email records of employees for Fortune 500 companies for evidence to be used in terminating the employee.
I know how to recover “deleted” emails.

You know, things have a way of cycling, and soon the “natural” look will be in — and these stretched weirdos will look even more like freaks. And not a damned thing they can do about it.

Eeeewwwww, they’ll have to institute the DRAFT for this JOB.
April 11th, 2007 at 11:30 pmThey (Dems) don’t have enough votes to impeach. Waxman has to build a case and characters like Gonzales and Rice need to go on the record. If strong cases are presented then the tie to Cheney needs to be explored. During that time the case for impeachment would find more support from flipped Repubs.
Odds are there will be another terrorist attack in the USA and even more will die. Then we will see Marshall Law and Military Govt. They would not go this far if they didn’t have a plan to go all the way. We may even see hit squads going after non-initiated Dems.

I suggest you contact Mr. Waxman and volunteer your services IMMEDIATELY! god bless!
April 12th, 2007 at 2:10 amApparently they’re using Exchange server. There is a checkbox “Do not permanently delete mailboxes and items until the store has been backed upâ€. Even if mailboxes are deleted the Information store will retain the information for 29 days by default. If the checkbox I mentioned above is checked then the information store will be retained untainted until the information store is backed up either manually through exchange or via third party backup agent. Either way email retention had to have been backed up. If they were smart and wanted to evade security protocols then the easy thing to do when deleting email from the user perspective is to hold down the shift key when deleting email in an exchange/outlook environment. The emails will not be retained in the information store and cannot be recovered. Symantic’s…just go to the users system and recover using a data forensics and recovery software such as “AccessData Forensic Toolkit ” and “Autopsy”. This is a no brainer. Data is recovered from damaged drives at a 90% sucess rate. These drives are not damaged. If a three letter agency came in and used level-3 formatting/overriding, but that wouldn’t work in a information store. Sorry for th geek rant, but I do this crap for a living. This is a no brainer.
April 12th, 2007 at 2:28 amI’ll offer my support for free.
April 12th, 2007 at 2:30 amEnough. Impeach now.
April 12th, 2007 at 2:33 amNewsflash.
The “White House” CAN’T lose RNC emails.
Only the RNC can lose RNC emails.
There are still server logs, and I am not sure of the federal laws with regards to rentention of political orignazions data but I think its 3 years at minimum.
So if anyone lost the emails its the RNC.
Because even IF the email was lost, there will be server logs of every email message that passed through that mail server on the RNC operated mail server. And those servers, like all mail servers, have a “back up” system, which backs up the data to a SANS (storage area network) for disaster recovery.
Those tape backups might contain the deleted messages unless they make direct calls to the SANS, and depending on whether they overwrite their data or not. Most places keep data to 90 days to make sure in case a user deletes an important message by accident. If the messages are gone, someones probably tamperered with them.
Id’ be looking at the RNC servers.
April 12th, 2007 at 2:49 amIn other words, White House staff may have deleted the message from their email client, but there should be back ups of that message on tape, or even on the servers themselves.
April 12th, 2007 at 2:51 amAnd if you want to see what messages are missing, all you have to do is subpeona the servers and examine the logs. You will see basically a timestamped list of every message in and out of that server. The body of the message will not be available (although it may be on the harddrive still) but a record of it will be, along with the address of who sent it, the server IP from where it was sent, and the same for the destination.
If there are missing messages they can check them against the logs to identify them and list them.
April 12th, 2007 at 2:55 amAs a number of posters pointed out, really making emails disappear is harder than it looks: there are lots of backup, you need to know both how the servers work and how mail gets stored on people’s laptops, and you may need the cooperation of outsiders like ISPs.
This is too many people to involve to keep secret, and too many of the people you need were hired because they were competent computer people. I’m guessing the Messiah College doesn’t turn ot an awful lot of those.
So this is desperation. There isn’t going to be some Rosemary Woods to just make all this stuff disappear. Either they weren’t able to get enough computer people to get the job done, or they had to involve people who aren’t Of The Body, and will talk to keep out of jail.
So Waxman and Conyers just need to hang tough. There’s no legal basis the RNC can hold up here, and either we’re going to get copies of many of the items claimed “deleted”, or we’re going to get some of the technical people to flip. Neither possibility is cheerful for Bush or Rove.
This one isn’t going away.

April 12th, 2007 at 10:58 amThey have to find evidence so extraordinary that it will force the Pugnants to vote for impeachment. They are doing the right thing. This is a cat and mouse but I can all but guarantee Leahy et al are a step a head.
When they advised them not to get rid of emails, they probably already had their experts finding ways to EXTRACT this information. Now it is one thing for them to have another email server but the question is did they have another NETWORK installed in the whitehouse.
If everything was still transferred via WH servers, there are ways. And the only way for them to know for certain those emails are destroyed are if they did 7 things which I won’t name as to not give them any expertise. These things are not easy to accomplish because there are still ways to establish time gaps; hence hiding things.
THEY CAN STILL BE CAUGHT. The attorney firing shit is just the tip of the iceberg. Cheney had the shredders at his house last year.

Even if the RNC has its own data center don’t try to tell me they didn’t run backups. If the tapes are erased then whoever did it is guilty of obstruction. Repeat, erasing the tapes is an act of obstruction.

Thats exactly the point I was making several posts up. The backup medium could be tape, optical or magnetic drive, but whatever the medium, I’d be subpeonaing the backups AND the logs.
The LOGS will SHOW what emails are supposedly missing.
