“For the second time in nine months, the Senate today passed a bill that would loosen President Bush’s restrictions on human embryonic stem cell research, but once again falling short of the 67 votes needed to override a promised veto.” Sen. John Sununu (R-NH), the critical swing vote, sided with President Bush and voted against stem cell research.
UPDATE: Blue Hampshire has more on Sununu.
UPDATE II: Towleroad notes on the very day conservatives voted against this bill, a medical study was published documenting how hematopoietic stem cells were used to cure insulin-dependent diabetics.
Yay, stem cell research!
Looks like Sununu needs a new job.
April 11th, 2007 at 7:24 pmWhy are you reporting this? They just fired a white bigot nobody watched at MSNBC. Get your priorities straight.
April 11th, 2007 at 7:27 pmA nation’s measure of greatness or failure depends on it’s science, education, research and progress – the Bush administration has jettisoned us back to the dark ages and being eclipsed by other world powers into loss of our “world power status”.
April 11th, 2007 at 7:27 pmZoo – John Sununu needs to get a new life, for goodness sakes. He’s got his buried where the sun doesn’t shine – just like his other co-conspirator….
April 11th, 2007 at 7:28 pmveritas,
The new job idea was just for starters. :)
April 11th, 2007 at 7:33 pmSomeone please tell me what century this is.
April 11th, 2007 at 7:33 pmYeah, well wait until King George gets prostate cancer and wants his cake and eat it too! He’ll be wanting the best cures money can buy, including remedies resulting from stem cell research. What a putts, and everyone else who votes to please him.
April 11th, 2007 at 7:36 pmSo, no no.
April 11th, 2007 at 7:36 pmFor someone who memorizes every detail of Ronald Reagan’s life, Bush sure has missed the part about Ronniegetting Alzheimer’s and his widow Nancy being an advocate for the research from having cared for the man….
April 11th, 2007 at 7:40 pmSununununu is an asshat.
April 11th, 2007 at 7:42 pmWell we can’t say we didn’t try.
April 11th, 2007 at 7:46 pmThis had better be a nail in Sununu’s coffin!
It’s a No-”Talent” redux.
This is just sad beyond words.
April 11th, 2007 at 7:46 pmSununu (R-NH), the critical swing vote, sided with President Bush and voted against stem cell research.
probably out of spite… all those damn phone calls…
chump…
he’ll see – paybacks are hell…
April 11th, 2007 at 7:47 pmBush wants America to be last in everything. Leading medical research is now being done outside the US.
April 11th, 2007 at 7:49 pmWhile the White House is promising to repeat its 2006 veto, the ending can be different this time. All the Reid legislation needs is a name change – and a little help from Ronald Reagan.
Call it the “Ronald Reagan Life Legacy Act”…
For the details, see:
April 11th, 2007 at 7:49 pm“How to Override the Bush Stem Cell Veto.”
Isn’t it possible that a different Senator might see the light and veto to override a veto? Why do we give up so easily?
April 11th, 2007 at 7:50 pmHere’s an idea: let’s make stem cell research a rider on the Iraq funding bill instead of a withdrawl deadline.
If it passes, we can research limb regrowth for the vets who lost limbs in combat. (And if we’re lucky, we’ll split the pro-Bush-lifers into those that prefer prenatal rights and those that prefer postnatal imperialistic narratives. Any crack in the base is a good one — Republicans have known and exploited this for years.)
If it fails (or rather, gets vetoed), we can say that inasmuch as we’re not willing to sacrifice some blastocysts for the possibility of medical advancement, we are no longer willing to sacrifice our bravest soldiers for the possibility of a stable and democratic Iraq.
April 11th, 2007 at 7:52 pm#2 PeeJ
What is your point? The subject you referenced was posted BEFORE this one. Since the posts are prioritized by time the posting order is somewhat predetermined. Some people may think that scientific research has a higher priority than some pottymouth extremist fool spouting his nonsensical crap to no one in particular. I don’t even care if he exists much less have an interest in his employment situation. Perhaps you should realign your priorities or at least have the courtesy to refrain from spouting your opinion as having merit for others.
April 11th, 2007 at 7:52 pm600,000 plus Iraqis and a million or so Africans want to know if stem cell research promises a cure for death.
April 11th, 2007 at 8:00 pm#2 Peej….That’s sarcasm, Right????
April 11th, 2007 at 8:01 pmIt’s time for Sununu to be gone. Since a vast majority of the US public supports stem cell research, I suspect this is going to come back and bite him in the butt. But, I’m fairly sure that he has a really cushy job waiting for him when he loses reelection. It’s the price they paid him for his vote.
April 11th, 2007 at 8:02 pmwhat? another republican who hates progress… go figure… just remember, these people are anything but pro life, if they were pro life, they would demand the war to end, there would be almost endless funds for disease research, pro life? hardly, try PRO-BIRTH then after that, the kid is FAIR GAME!
April 11th, 2007 at 8:04 pmCan anyone post how the Senators voted? We should be making our list of who to throw out of office next election.
April 11th, 2007 at 8:05 pmAs it turns out right now the rest of the globe is exploding in all types of different stem cell research. There are hudge advances coming. The US is about to be left behind compared just to the UK’s sytems for research and global networking. Please tell me what happens when these discoveries start unfolding. If they use embryonic stem cells to grow and replace human organs, will this country not allow these needed organs or not allow these discoveries into our country too?
God help us. Who are these people holding this country hostage to save life.

April 11th, 2007 at 8:16 pm#20 Badger, brilliant! #18 Clyde the Ripper, go to the back of the bus! I am so sick of this country going to hell in a hand basket and all we see on the news is Imus, Brittney, Sanjie, Anna Nicole, Duke rape, Rosie O’Donnell. Geesh, we are losing our freedoms our founding fathers risked their lives for. Where is “Give me Liberty (not the university), or give me death!”? Why is a blow job more important than the politicization of our criminal justice system? What is the status of Carol Lam’s investigation into corruption? I give up! Just shoot me!

PeeJ, I am as far back as I can get! I apologize profusely as I hold the same feelings you do. I am so sick of the republican lip and finger service I could just spit. Unfortunately, I misjudged the wind. Never again!

To answer your questions, we now live in the United States of Greed where the Constitution has been reduced to one acronym: WIIFM (What’s In It For Me!). Don’t give up, dammit, shoot back. With a better aim than mine.
April 11th, 2007 at 8:43 pmAs Tiny Tim once said, “God bless us all, everyone!” Clyde, I just wish my aim was a good as Cheyney’s. What’s up with that anyway? We’re still talking about Chappaquidick (sp). Why no investigation into a drunken hunting accident?
Peace!

These people are the problem.
We in PA got rid of the fetus handler Santorum for what — this freak?
I wrote a note to Casey asking him whether he’d deny me a transfusion if his religion happened to be so inclined. If these bible thumping superstitious sonsofbitches would rather watch their loved ones suffer than avail themselves of a cure from an embryo that will be discarded, they’re welcome to deny them the cures that result. It’s unconscionable that they would vote to deny it to others who don’t share their paralyzing fear of retribution from that great big invisisble man who lives — whoooeeee — in the sky. What a bunch of freaks.
I want to send a particularly hearty shout out to that scumbag Chuck Schumer, who in his infinite “wisdom” hand-picked Casey to run against Santorum under the goofy assumption that Pennsylvanians can only vote for a bible-thumping retard. We knew this was going to come back to bite us, and this crap ain’t over yet, you wait and see. You are one filthy sonofabitch, Chucky Cheese, and if it were up to me, neither you nor your plow boy Casey would ever win another election.
Even Specter voted YES for the love of sweet Jesus.

Comment by Jake — April 11, 2007 @ 9:27 pm
Point one, very little embryonic stem cell research has occurred, because you religious fanatics prohibit the research.
Point two, those embryos are already being destroyed.
Point three, embryos are not humans, they are cells, just like the ones you shoot out when you’re j*ck*ng off to snuff films.
Point four, you have no religious or rational basis to stand in the way of this research, you superstitious, diaper soiled brat who’s been outed as an plagiarist lying piece of sh*t.
April 11th, 2007 at 9:39 pmI am physician and totally pro-embryonic stem cell research. However the study that you are reporting “curing” diabetes was a study using ADULT stem cells. Don’t use this study as an example, it only makes Rove’s point that there is as much promise in adult stem cells as there is in embryonic stem cells. If we don’t get details like this straight, we cannot make a credible argument for our position.
April 11th, 2007 at 10:37 pmBush will veto this again and again he will show the american that he does not care about them. He panders to the ignorant who don’t begin to understand the issue because he boils everything down to simplistic terms, and he panders to the religious right, who are our very own domestic taliban.
April 11th, 2007 at 10:40 pmHe vetoes bills that would benefit americans, but he takes a 2AM flight to the White House to sign a bill to keep a “dead” woman breathing.
He says he believes in the sanctity of life, while he has sent nearly 3300 americans to their deaths in Iraq and has killed uncounted tens of thousands Iraqi citizens who were in the wrong place.
Hell is too good for Bush.
He should develop a painful and debilitating disease which would plague him for the rest of his days in a federal penitentiary.
So is Senator Casey going to turn into a nut job like his predecessor Santorum?
Thank you so much for preventing medical research. Now who is Anna Nicole’s daughter’s real father?
Dumb Americans won’t even protest this. Too sick and/or lazy.
April 11th, 2007 at 10:49 pm#37 So, Jakey, how do you feel about Republican Lamar Alexander’s bill that would allow non-viable embryos to be tested on? Yes, it is a loaded question. If you are against it you are nothing but an illogical religious freak.
April 11th, 2007 at 11:31 pmSununu—I PLACE THIS GEAS-CURSE UPON YOU, YOU WILL DEVELOP A CONDITION THAT CAN ONLY BE CURED WITH STEM-CELLS—SO MOTE IT BE, AND WHO’S SORRY NOW??? April 12th, 2007 at 1:06 amGo f@ck yourself Sununu and the same goes to the rest of the hillbilly sh@t for brains neocon scum that voted against this bill. You’re voting against the American people (remember that). Cause not even Diebold machines are going to save your slimey asses in 08′. 2008 can’t come soon enough. And f@ck the mainstream media too. Bunch a worthless f@cks, the lot of them. Here’s your so called party of life Republicans. Voting against a scientific future that will cure thousands of people.

Comment by Jake — April 11, 2007 @ 9:27 pm
Guys, I hate to agree with even a smidgen of what Jake the Snake says, but the first part of his rant is correct; I used to work in this area in medical research. “Hematopoietic stem cells” are not the same as embryonic stem cells; the former come from bone marrow, and can be obtained (although not in high numbers) from adults, teens, children, etc.
Now the other big difference, too, is that hematopoietic stem cells are already on their way to becoming blood cells (that’s why they’re in the bone marrow), and they can’t often become something else no matter where you put them; embryonic stem cells, however, are still so immature that they can become nearly any cell type in the body, given the appropriate environment. So the research that Towleroad reports on is a pretty exceptional study — that’s why it’s being reported. But it’s also true that embryonic stem cells provide FAR more promise than hematopoietic stem cells EVER could, in terms of solving some of our most difficult medical problems.
Oh, and by the way, some bone marrow donors have been known to die from donating bone marrow for harvesting of hematopoietic stem cells. So since harvesting embryonic stem cells doesn’t actually kill anyone, it would seem that one is more likely to “Destroy human life,” as Jake the Unenlightened says, using hematopoietic stem cells than by using embryonic stem cells.
April 12th, 2007 at 3:34 pm“. . . since harvesting embryonic stem cells doesn’t actually kill anyone . . .”
I obviously disagree with that premise.
