“A bomb rocked Iraq’s parliament building in the heavily fortified Green Zone Thursday, killing at least two lawmakers in a stunning security breach in the third month of a U.S.-Iraqi crackdown on violence in the capital … The brazen bombing was the clearest evidence yet that militants can penetrate even the most secure locations.”

White House officials privately concede that much of the added domestic funding projects in the Iraq supplemental is necessary, contrary to Bush’s claim that they are “pork barrel projects.” “We agree that the funding is needed,” one official said, specifically citing added funds for homeland security and to help Gulf Coast states still recovering from Hurricane Katrina.

“Tony Blair yesterday claimed the spate of knife and gun murders in London was not being caused by poverty, but a distinctive black culture. His remarks angered community leaders, who accused him of ignorance and failing to provide support for black-led efforts to tackle the problem.”

“A librarian who fended off an FBI demand for computer records on patrons said Wednesday that secret anti-terrorism investigations strip away personal freedoms.” George Christian said his experience “should raise a big patriotic American flag of caution” about the strain that the Bush administration has put on civil liberties.

The war in Iraq has “spawned new terror in the region,” the Oxford Research Group, a British think tank, states in a new report. The U.S. and Britain have tried to “keep the lid on” terrorism problems with military force but “failed to address the root causes.” The report also states that Iran, Syria and North Korea have become “emboldened.”

Al Qaeda’s new affiliate in North Africa asserted responsibility Wednesday for the deadliest attacks in Algeria’s capital in a decade as 24 people were reported killed and 222 injured in bombings that shattered the prime minister’s headquarters and a police base.”

Facing strong congressional opposition, the White House yesterday withdrew its nomination of William Wehrum to head the EPA’s air pollution office. Wehrum was the “the behind-the-scenes architect” of some of the Bush administration’s most controversial initiatives, including a plan to loosen emission caps on dangerous air toxins.

Conservative state legislators killed an effort yesterday to hang Coretta Scott King’s portrait in Georgia’s Capitol, next to a photo of her late husband, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Mrs. King certainly is a wonderful humanitarian…but this is not a museum,” said State Rep. Calvin Hill (R).

“Five years after the Bush administration began a crackdown on voter fraud, the Justice Department has turned up virtually no evidence of any organized effort to skew federal elections.” Just 120 people have been charged with voter fraud crimes, and 86 convicted as of last year.

And finally: Freshmen Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) “are locked in a tight race over who will be class geek.” They are competing to win the Golden Gavel Award, which “goes to any senator who has presided over the Senate for 100 hours in any given year.” At this point, Klobuchar is winning by a mere 20 minutes.

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

    MSNBC Re-Writes History
Sat Apr 07, 2007

MSNBC has put together a slide-show offering a brief history of Iran. They’ve managed to go back further than 1979 - impressive for a mainstream outlet.

But, amazingly, they’ve contrived to ignore Mohammed Mossadeq, the democratically elected prime minister of Iran who in 1953 was overthrown in a UK/CIA-backed coup, which installed the brutal and corrupt Shah in his place.

The overthrow of Mossadeq is probably, together with the 1979 Islamic revolution, the seminal moment in the history of 20th century Iran, and MSNBC has just wiped it out for political convenience.

Mossadeq had dared to nationalise the Iranian oil industry at the expense of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (now British Petroleum), and such defiance could obviously not be tolerated by the masters of the world.
The slide-show also makes no mention of the fact that the U.S. supported Iraq in its aggression against Iran, which left up a million people dead on all sides.

That MSNBC has completely obliterated the U.S.’ history of aggression towards Iran at a time when the Bush administration is trying to drum up militaristic fervour is an utter disgrace.

This is the kind of crap that really upsets me. If we are ever to establish trust among our citizens that we can live in a safe and secure environment, ensuring that we all feel like crooks, liars or terorists (or that our neighbors are) is probably not the best way to go about it.

I go out of my way to get on the do not call list, get off mailing lists, make sure no one gets my phone #, e-mail address, any personal information. I do this because I truely think the invasivenesss/impoliteness/take for granted-ness of our culture is disgusting. My family doesn’t watch tv in part because of all the mindless shows, but also because of the advertising. I am a thinking, breathing human being. I can research and decide what is good for myself/family/home/cat/dog/car…..without being told by someone else. I refuse to turn into a mindless commercialized zombie!
For people to eagerly give out all of their personal information for a “club price” or “free something or other” to me is analagous of the zombies eagerly giving away their personal freedoms to a corrupt government.

I am glad to see that unquestioning adherance to stupid and corrupt system is starting to be stood up to and questioned. Two cheers for the librarians!

You be the judge - connect the dots - it’s sad & painful but the critical mass is realizing it now.

go to http://www.911truth.org and see how many (82%) now believe that 911 was an inside job.

Although this Congress is mired in investigating 6 years of overt corruption, the onus of responsibility for bringing about impeachment charges is now upon them. It’s clear that Bush’s administration is the most corrupt in the history of this country; it’s also clear that Bush has lied repeatedly to the american people - something which has eroded the level of respect and trust of the people. NOW is the time to begin the road to recovery - with the american people and the rest of the world - by bringing these criminals in the white house to justice. It’s imperative that Bush & Cheney be impeached and not allowed to remain in office for the remainder of their term - that is, IF this country has even the slightest chance for recovery of what it has taken us 200 years to achieve.

IMPEACHMENT IS NO LONGER A CHOICE; IT IS A MANDATE TO THE CONGRESS BY THE PEOPLE OF THIS DEMOCRACY.

#10 The only the worse than Communism is Capitalism with no oversight.

    Comment by GWB — April 12, 2007 @ 9:40 am

Yes and no. Communism, altough theorethically is fair and balanced, as has been applied in this world, is bad, due to what is the curse of the humanity in every social and economic system of the world: the powerful ones tend to abuse their power and harm the less powerful. Thus, oversight is needed always, and applied Communism failed (where it has failed) because it was rotten to the core.

People thinks that Capitalism is a better system because it hasn’t failed yet so blatantly, but the reality is that first, Capitalism isn’t a social system, but a economic system, and second, if we let it rot the core of a society, it will fall like the Communism, or some flavors of Communism.

Just check the many dictadures that had a Capitalist system (almost all the ones created by the USA in South America and a couple other countries). The dictadures failed because there was not a fair social system, independantly of the economic system. In fact, Capitalism without social justice quickened the fall, creating hordes of dirt poor people.

THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW:

In 2000, Team Bush took over the Republican Party and laid out its promises to the American people. The following pledges and claims are taken directly from the 2000 GOP Platform. Should we laugh or cry at promises made by an administration that has ruled through deception, endless war, politicization of intelligence and the Justice Dept., outing CIA officers, and the like?

    Honest Government

“Trust, pride, and respect: we pledge to restore these qualities to the way Americans view their government.”

    Keeping Intelligence Free of Politics

“Nor should the intelligence community be made the scapegoat for political misjudgments. A Republican administration working with the Congress will respect the needs and quiet sacrifices of these public servants as it strengthens America’s intelligence and counter-intelligence capabilities…”

    Diplomacy and Maintaining Allies

“The arrogance, inconsistency, and unreliability of the [Clinton] administration’s diplomacy have undermined American alliances, alienated friends, and emboldened our adversaries.”

Endless Military Missions, Exit Strategies and Troop Readiness

“The current administration has casually sent American armed forces on dozens of missions without clear goals, realizable objectives, favorable rules of engagement, or defined exit strategies.” “Sending our military on vague, aimless, and endless missions rapidly saps morale. Even the highest morale is eventually undermined by back-to-back deployments, poor pay, shortages of spare parts and equipment, inadequate training, and rapidly declining readiness. When it comes to military health, the administration is not providing an adequate military health care system…”

Restoring the Rule of Law and the Justice Department

The rule of law, the very foundation for a free society, has been under assault, not only by criminals from the ground up, but also from the top down. An administration that lives by evasion, coverup, stonewalling, and duplicity has given us a totally discredited Department of Justice. The credibility of those who now manage the nation’s top law enforcement agency is tragically eroded. We are fortunate to have its dedicated career workforce, especially its criminal prosecutors, who have faced the unprecedented politicization of decisions regarding both personnel and investigations.”

Gas Prices (then $1.55 per gallon)

“Today, gas prices have skyrocketed, and oil imports are at all-time highs….By any reasonable standard, the Department of Energy has utterly failed in its mission to safeguard America’s energy security. “

The military is presently engaging in just that mission. The idea that the DoE can pull oil out of a hat is pretty crazy. Oil is FINITE that is to say that at some point there will simply not be enough to go around. You should have listed ENERGY as #1 on your list since all of the other items on that list depend on abundant, cheap ENERGY. The US economy is built and driven on oil. All of the goods you purchase require oil in one way or another. Your computer takes several barrels of oil to make.

Humanity functions on the same curve as the energy we use. Abundant, cheap oil, NG and coal allowed us to breed to over 6.5 BILLION humans. At some point, as energy depletes the population will rapidly fall. This is called “die-off” and starvation, elements, disease, radiation, war, pestilence and a few others will help the population to return to its “pre-industrial revolution” size.

Since we have caused a great deal of damage we may possibly be facing extinction should the “die-off” cause the population size to go to low? It looks like the Military is doing a “controlled burn” by killing “terrorists” and at the same time securing resources through PLUNDER.

Provided I’m correct about all of this; it would be impossible for the government to admit that the energy situation is so dismal that we have to resort to larceny or watch America enter a second Civil War.

    &

There is a video you can watch that shows it all called, “Rob Newman’s History of Oil”

(just Gogle the URLs this site does not allow me to post the links)

Oil depletes on a curve and at the same time our demand has increased. It is said that when the EROEI (energy returned on energy invested) of oil gets close to 1 to 1 (it takes a barrel to get a barrel) that we are DONE.

The state’s capitol art collection includes 296 portraits, plaques, statues and sculptures, some of which are in storage. Of the 93 portraits now on display in the Capitol, only five depict African-Americans, including the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., said Dorothy Olson, director of the Georgia Capitol Museum and Capitol Tours.

    5 out of 93…hmmmmm…

“I do think that, as a general rule, it ought to be residents of Georgia that claim Georgia as home,” Richardson added about his criteria for which portraits should go in the Capitol, “and I do know that some of those people on that list are not Georgia residents. And this is the Georgia Capitol.”

Several people who are not from Georgia are honored in the portraits already on display in the Capitol, including Confederate General Robert E. Lee of Virginia and President Andrew Jackson, who was born in South Carolina.

No, this is much worse. Imus is just a dumb old man from another generation with some somewhat-suppressed racism. He’s just a mouth. Blair’s comments are much worse because (1) he’s the Prime Minister (!!!!!) and (2) he wasn’t just commenting on the appearance of a group of young black individuals, but commenting that the ENTIRE black youth has a criminal tendency due solely to some sort of black cultural norm and not other potential factors, such as poverty. Wow… That beats Imus any day. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not condoning what Imus said, but I think Blair’s comments are much more destructive and could hurt the UK greatly for a time.

Race has really come to the forefront lately. I hope some “good” can come out of this by opening dialogs, passing more effective “equal rights” types of legislation in countries all over the world, and minimalizing the haters once and for all. “We Intend to recklessly send American armed forces on dozens of missions without clear goals, realizable objectives, favorable rules of engagement, or defined exit strategies.” “Sending our military on vague, aimless, and endless missions rapidly saps morale[McMahon, Mark] , too bad for them they should have known what they were getting into when they enlisted. Even the highest morale is eventually undermined by back-to-back deployments, poor pay, shortages of spare parts and equipment, inadequate training, and rapidly declining readiness and we intend to do all of these to the fullest extent of our ability to wage war on anyone who needs to know that we are now in the ass kicking business. When it comes to military health, the administration will not providing an adequate military health care system…”

    Gas Prices

“Today, gas prices have skyrocketed, and oil imports are at all-time highs….By any reasonable standard, the Department of Energy has utterly failed in its mission to safeguard America’s energy security which is how we intend to run it.“

Is that what you think? You think we are there with no plan? Think about it!

The plan is to HOLD Iraq and build a conscript army for the invasion of Iran. Spread depleted uranium in the entire area to cause sterility among the population. Plunder all available resources. Build bases to stage attacks and defense positions against the Russians and Chinese.

Regarding gas prices you are WRONG. #1 The DoE does not create oil that is done by the Earth. #2 The DoE cannot prevent depletion since oil is FINITE. #3 We in the USA pay the LEAST for a gallon of gas than any country on the Earth. In England they pay $8.00 per gallon while other nations they have shortages do to demand destruction and supply shortages.

So, like I mentioned in the other post…
There is no way the govt can say that our survival depends on middle eastern oil and things are so tight now that we have no choice but to steal the energy or face civil war in the USA…

I just came from your link, and I was mildly surprised to see that Dennis Kucinich’s name was conspicuously absent from the ballot.

Any idea why? Last I heard, his hat was still in the ring.
