Video: Leahy says White House is lying about lost emails.»

In an impassioned speech this morning on the Senate floor, Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) said the White House is lying when it claims that emails sent via RNC accounts were lost.

“They say they have not been preserved. I don’t believe that!” Leahy shouted from the Senate floor. “You can’t erase e-mails, not today. They’ve gone through too many servers. Those e-mails are there, they just don’t want to produce them. We’ll subpoena them if necessary.”

“Like the famous 18-minute gap in the Nixon White House tapes, it appears likely that key documentation has been erased or misplaced. This sounds like the Administration’s version of ‘the dog ate my homework.’”

Watch the speech:

  25. Parrotlover77 Says:

While I suspect (based on this “too many servers” statement) Leahy has no idea how easy, indeed, it is for an email to get deleted permanently, I do completely agree that I believe the administration is lying, or, at the very least, they are deleting emails NOW and it may eventually be too late. I hope some of the outside contact points kept some of the more incriminating ones (accidently or intentionally) or maybe some crafty network admin might discover some old backups… ;-)

  40. Pinson Says:

Someone - firedoglake maybe - had a post last week about the ISP that the RNC uses to host its domain, run its servers, etc. There was talk of “off-shoring” the servers outside the U.S. Could have all just been speculation. But if a) anybody can be shown to be intentionally hiding/deleting email, or b) attempting to work around the records act by siting servers outside the U.S., I’m thinking that’s not going to look so good. Especially when these clowns have been screaming TERRROR ALERT every ten minutes for the past six years. Oh and yeah, by the way, we’ve been running highly sensitive white house mail through a server owned by some dude named Raoul based in Slovenia. It would be nice if a reporter other than Dan Froomkin would start paying attention to this story. Here’s a few starter questions:
    1. What company/comapnies is the RNC using to host its email?
    2. What policies do they have in place to secure sensitive communication?
    3. What measures are taken to ensure these policies are followed on a consistent basis?
    4. Who has access to the servers used to route white house/RNC email?
    5. What are your standard policies for content/message retention?
    6. Were these standard policies applied to RNC/white house email?
    7. If not, were you following instructions from your RNC client on alternative measures for message retention?
    8. Who were the point people within the RNC that you dealt with?
    So many questions…

  44. I WORFEUS Says:

    Leahey is absolutely correct.

    Subpeona the server LOGS.

    Subpeona the BACKUPS.

The server logs will show a list of all emails in and out of the servers.

Then you will know what emails you are missing, and you can find them in the backups.

  45. criticalthinker Says:

    re#33 ggibson

I am willing to bet that the backup media for those servers will have media “errors” that will not allow them to be restored!

All it takes is just one aboslute sector write with the debug command, and be the media tape or disk the entire volume becomes unreadable.

And we should consider that Rove would have had these staffers spied on to make sure they were loyal - and I’d guess he’d keep his backup in order to save his ass in the end.

Not to mention FBI or CIA sniffers looking for info. And let’s not forget hard copies that probably were printed by staffers trying to cover their asses.

Those staffers would be wise to be the first to jump ship and cut a deal.

Former Repub VP Dan Quaile on Clinton attacking terrorist camps in 1998: “I don’t have a problem with the timing.  You need to focus on the act itself.  It was a correct act.  Bill Clinton took —— made a decisive decision to hit these terrorist camps.  It’s probably long overdue.”

Could you be a bigger idiot? That’s rhetorical.

  95. hellinabucket Says:

So it wouldn’t be cowardice if someone did kill republicans? Just trying to grasp the latest Bushman.

#52 - YOU would kill Republicans if you could get away with it (and if you weren’t such cowards).

I don’t have any desire to kill someone else but does that make me a coward? Killing someone is brave? And what the f%#k does that have to do with the missing emails and sloppy attempt to cover this up?

  96. Mr. Bush Goes To Hell Says:

Dan Burton was WHINING that “The Democrats are using subpoenas for PARTISAN purposes.”

Actually, THAT was Burton the HYPOCRITE.

What Congress is doing presently is oversight of CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES of a group that had NO OVERSIGHT for their activities.

Leahy, Waxman, Pelosi, etc. are PATRIOTS.

Bush and his CRIMINALS are TRAITORS to the USA!

    Go Waxman and Leahy!!!

#85: Of course, you’re OK with a president who has committed treason while in office by outing an undercover CIA agent. Bush is the biggest crook ever to sit in the White House. And his incompetence has led to his legacy of failure.

  99. The Left Shuts Down Dissent Says:

#86 - Clinton also left us a foreign policy disaster. Had he killed Bin Laden when he had the chance, maybe 9/11 would never have happened.

For the good of the USA and the WORLD!

  103. Bluedog49 Says:

Bush cultist: “If Clinton cared about terrorism, he would have resigned once he got caught red handed breaking the law.”

I’m guessing that you are a frustrated congressional staffer blowing off some steam here while eating a bag lunch at your desk. Whoever you work for is probably in trouble, and your party and president are damn well in trouble. A boat load of trouble.

Better start polishing the resume, but don’t get your hopes up, because you won’t ever get the stain of Bush off of it. Your time is over.

I don’t want you and yours dead, just out of office, so fuck off.

  114. Bluedog49 Says:

Cultist, according to Alan Greenspan, the economy went into recession in early 2001, not 2000 as you heard on FOX. And, try to get this through your little mellon: Clinton was actively engaged in trying to kill bin Laden. On the day he missed killing him with cruise missles by 45 minutes, he had spent the entire morning in deposition forced to answer questions about oral sex. Clinton and his people told the Bushies that their JOB ONE was trying to deal with the threat of bin Laden. How many times did Bush meet with his people regarding terrorism between January, 2001 and September 2001??? The answer: a big zero!

  115. The Left Shuts Down Dissent Says:

#105 - I think that’s one of the most disgusting attacks ever laid against Bush. AND you people whined about us “swiftboating” Kerry????

To demean the President because he was reading My Pet Goat is truly shameful and shows just how much liberals HATE him.

  116. The Left Shuts Down Dissent Says:

#108 - yawn. I like the GOP’s chances against your 2008 nominee, Hillary. She just posted some pretty bad unfavorables today in a Gallup poll. AND we haven’t laid a glove on her yet.

  117. veritas Says:

This “dog ate my homework gap” is grounds for impeachment. It’s clear that this President views himself, like Richard M. Nixon, to be “above the law” and therefore not accountable to the people WRONGO! Impeach his sorry butt now and show him that this is still a country “of the people”. Congress now has a responsibility to do so in light of his ongoing obstinance, lying, covering up, defrauding the public, breaking laws, and destroying this democracy.

It is no longer an option: It’s a moral imperative! Listen up, Congress and do what you KNOW is the essential next step!

  118. Bluedog49 Says:

Cultist: “#97 - Joe Wilson outed his wife, not Bush. AND even if we live in your deluded msm get Bush world, it was Armitrage who actually outed Plame.”

    Maybe you missed your meds.

I hope he shows up at the hearing a bit more sober.

  120. veritas Says:

#114 El President didn’t need anyone to attempt to demean him for reading My Pet Goat while thousands of americans perished and this country was supposedly under attack; contrarily, the mere sitting on his duff and reading with first graders was indicting enough. He’s his own worst enemy and makes a total doofus of himself and is an embarrassment to the american people every time he speaks in public and lies through his teeth. By far, he is the “worst president ever in the history of this country”.

Every day across our great nation more and more Kool-Aid swillers fall prey to the dread disease: OCD (Obsessive Clinton Disorder). Watching their beloved Chimpy distinguish himself as the worst President ever drives them to distraction, causing them to fixate on one on which they can persuade their twisted minds to blame for all the world’s ills: Bubba.

If left untreated, victims of OCD like The Left Shuts Down Dissent will continue to make fools of themselves on public message boards, continually changing nicknames in a vain attempt to escape humiliation. Eventually, in the end stages of the disease, the afflicted will cease changing nicks and accept his or her new, pitiable status as a parody troll.

Fortunately, there is hope. For only pennies a day, less than the price of a cup of coffee, you can help OCD sufferers like The Left Shuts Down Dissent recover most of their former functionality…enough to get by in the world. Sadly, the illness, as well as the underlying Kool-Aid addiction, can leave permanent damage. These poor souls need all the help we can give.

The time is now to reach out to these poor benighted fools. Every moment we waste, the afflicted slide deeper into the nightmare that is OCD. Won’t you give?

Cultist, you keep repeating the right-wing lie that our latest recession began during Clinton. You are, of course, misinformed:

From Money Magazine, Nov. 26, 2001:

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - The world’s largest economy sank into a recession in March, ending 10 years of growth that was the longest expansion on record in the United States, a group of economists that dates U.S. business cycles said Monday.

The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), composed of academic economists from Harvard, Stanford and other universities, joined a chorus of economists and investors who were saying that a recession had already begun. The group posted its decision on its Web site.

It ruled that the long expansion ended in March and the nation’s tenth recession since the end of World War II began at the same time. The declaration means the longest expansion lasted exactly 10 years. The previous record for uninterrupted economic growth was set in the 1960s, a period of eight years and 10 months lasting from February 1961 to December 1969.”

If one watches very closely the video of him at that time, there is the split second where a look crosses his face (note particularly his eyes and his mouth, and the slight tightening beside his ears) that shows he knew about what was going down.

The 911 investigations are right around the corner and the glaring inconsistencies will prove that the “official story” was a mere cover-up…..and then the *hit will hit the fan! Critical mass awareness of problems with the official story have reached 82% right now which translates into most americans having very strong suspicions about our own complicity in it all. Take a look at the polls, and try not to sob any harder while doing it. The Republicans have lost the independent voters in a big way, and attitudes are hardening fast. Go ahead and spread your lies. The independents don’t believe anything you say anymore. Bottom line, you aren’t going to win elections on 29% support, and that number is going down, not up.

Thanks Bluedog49 for restating the 7 minutes. It always has bugged me. “We are under attack” and he sits. His whereabouts were public knowledge. For all anyone knew (?) a plane could have been pointed at him putting all those kids in danger and he just sits.

He wasn’t told what to do and that’s why he sat.

Actually, hellinabucket, in the case of imminent threat to the President, the Secret Service wouldn’t have been following Chimpy’s lead. They would have removed him from danger immediately. That’s their job.

Chimpy’s itinerary was well known on that day. For all anyone knew, another hijacked airliner was nose-diving into Booker Elementary at that very second. The only reason the Secret Service would have allowed Chimpy to sit there for an additional seven minutes and read a book to children, fatally exposed, was because they knew full well that he wasn’t in any danger. Ask yourself how they could be so sure of this.

#165: It’ll be interesting to see how many Republican candidates try to run without referencing Bush’s record. My guess: all of them.

#160 - do you ever get razzed about how awfully stupid you are?

Is that all you have left? Disappointing.

TP admins, can we have a new troll? This one is out of gas.

  174. Bluedog49 Says:

The Bush cultist thinks we’re all stupid morons. Oh well, let’s review:

Cultist, in 2006, Dems went from 32 seats down to 33 seats up in the House. This was the biggest turnaround since 1933. In 2008, Repubs have 21 seats up and Dems have 9 seats up for reelection. Bush has the lowest approval ratings of any 2-term president in the history of modern polling. And, take a look at almost any poll on where people stand on the issues.

Dude, wake up and smell the coffee. You and your fellow cultists are on the way out.

Keep dreaming, loser. Your party will be destroyed in the 2008 congressional elections.

  176. Spudge_Boy Says:

AND we haven’t been attacked since 9/11.

This is true only if you ignore the Anthrax that was sent to Democrats by a NeoCon cultist in November of 2001.

  177. Bluedog49 Says:

Bush cultist: “AND we haven’t been attacked since 9/11″

Well, cultist, if that’s your standard of success, you should have loved Clinton. Barely 30 days into his first term, the WTC was attacked. There were no more attacks by Muslims in our country for the rest of his term. Oh, and there is no record of anyone in the Clinton administration blaming the previous admin. for this attack.

The GOP is self-destructing??? Are you serious? We are not the party about to nominate the most divisive figure in politics

Comment by The Left Shuts Down Dissent — April 12, 2007 @ 2:05 pm

When do you think the primary is nutwad, next week? But Rush tells you idiots that Hillary has the nomination and there’s so much dirt on her that you’ll win the election. Run with it.

Who’s your candidate? You don’t even know that but you know about the Democrat. You’ll win the White House and the congress back and you can keep breaking laws and destroying the Constitution and the country. And your proud of that.

You care about Republicans more than the United States, traitor.

    #168 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Early_2000s_recession

    NBER President Martin Federstein said:

“It is clear that the revised data have made our original March date for the start of the recession much too late. We are still waiting for additional monthly data before making a final judgment. Until we have the additional data, we cannot make a decision.”

    ——————————-

OH and of course, with the left-wing media in Clinton and Gore’s back pocket, this was NEVER discussed in 2000. It was just all about how much peace and prosperity America had. WE HAD NEITHER. IT WAS A LIE.

  180. Bob Savage Says:

I hope some future Democratic administration does the right thing, and replaces Washington on the quarter with a likeness of Senator Leahy. He is truly an American hero. One of the few we have seen in office in recent years.

I find this troll particularly disturbing. It puts out a strong stench of Nazism. It is obviously frightened, and it is starting to sound frantic. I’ll bet that this person knows damn well what is going on, and that this true believer will never change no matter what is revealed by investigations. If necessary it will go into hiding, waiting to reemerge when Republican fortunes being to rise again 20 years from now.

  182. shane Says:

Veritas - are you serious? You think Bush was in on 9/11? Either he is a dipsh*t or a Stalin?? Get your propoganda straight.

To imply the feds covered up 9/11 is not far fetched, but it would be suicide in the general election, especially with Hillary at the top of the ticket. Sandy Berger clearly feared the Clinton Admin would look bad. Why did he steal those documents?

Comment by The Left Shuts Down Dissent — April 12, 2007 @ 2:16 pm

You idiots think we care more about Hillary than 9/11 and the people who died. Maybe that’s what Republicans think about when people are suffering.

But Progressives are human. We think about human suffering more than the next election. But thanks for pointing out what your parties priorities are.

Self, elections, power, money that’s all that matters to you neocons.

They destroy our credibility in the world, kill Iraqis because they are Muslims (shades of Hitler anyone?), politicize the Justice Dept and God knows what else, expose a covert agent, lie us into a trillion dollar war……Jeez……and it’s Pelosi that we should be worried about??? Wrong and dangerous because she talks to people we have a problem with?

If Americans are really that stupid, we have bigger problems than the terrorists, the liberals, the anti-Americans, the Democrats, the French and Pelosi all combined.

The way out of a sewage pit does not lie through digging deeper into the sewage.
