White House lost 5 million emails.

By Nico Pitney on Apr 12th, 2007 at 2:53 pm

White House lost 5 million emails.

“CREW learned that the Executive Office of the President (EOP) has lost over FIVE MILLION emails generated between March 2003 and October 2005. The White House counsel’s office was advised of these problems in 2005 and CREW has been told that the White House was given a plan of action to recover these emails, but to date nothing has been done to rectify this significant loss of records.” Read the full report HERE.

    Curiouser and curiouser.

This just keeps getting juicier by the minute.

  2. Xbot says:

How the HELL do you lose 5 million emails, and then hjust shrug it off and move on?

  3. Tom3 says:

    Obstruction of Justice.

  4. EverVigilant says:

And we really expect to ever see these emails? What would give you any idea that they have not been “lost” long ago.

You can say what you want about PudgeBoy Rover’s ethics but not his arrogance!

  5. Preznit Pinhead says:

Wonder if Koochie Couric will lead off with this story on tonight’s “news”?

If she does happen to mention it, you can bet it will be spun as merely more politics on the part of the Democrat party.

  6. TripMaster Monkey says:

Blatant and willful violation of the Presidential Records Act.

Hey Nancy…I’m getting real tired of asking this…

IS IMPEACHMENT BACK ‘ON THE TABLE’ YET?

  7. GSD says:

Significantly larger than an 18 minute gap in a tape.

Our government has been taken over.

We’re gonna have to get it back.

  10. Ben Dover says:

Howw freaking convenient. I can see losing 5 emails or even 50 but how does one lose 5 million of them?? Oh, I forgot, the boy wonder was involved. Anyone else see a parallel with the 18 1/2 minute gap in Rose Woods tape, or is it just me??

  11. hellinabucket says:

This was known back in 2005 and no correction has been made yet. Negligence?

OK so what is your plan to get it back?

  14. oldtree says:

do you think this will make congress begin impeachment proceedings?

you know it appears to be a conspiracy that congress is allowing this to go on to me. when you have information about a duck, and you ID the duck. You have the quack on tape, and you have voiceprinted that quack to this duck, the duck admits that it knows the chicken, and the chicken has copped a plea about the duck and an unnamed goose.

an unprecedented, day to day revelation of another crime in the obstruction of justice. if you add up the other crimes, they are enough to impeach. But our congress sits on their hands when an ongoing soap opera of crime and conspiracy takes place before them and does nothing to stop it.

  15. GSD says:

Yet, they want to try to keep track of OUR e-mails.

My God, these are the most corrupt band of incompetents ever.

    -GSD

  16. Tom3 says:

The White House had the best email system money can buy, set up to automatically archive every single email. Everything. And you can bet it was backed up, probably a completely redundant system.

It boggles the mind that 5 million emails could ever possibly just disappear by accident from a system like this. Absolute bullshit.

This is obstruction of justice and it is time to Chimpeach.

  17. Republicans are the fear and smear party says:

“Yes, we lost 5 million emails and we take responsibility for it. Now let’s move on.”

  18. Gregor Samsa says:

Well, this administration has squandered and lost track of significantly more hard, cold money than 5 million in Iraq alone. Without even blinking, or worrying about the consequences to the nation.

I wouldn’t expect them to lose their sleep over the stuff that travels on a “series of tubes”, over “the internets”. They think “quaint” things such as the law, Habeas Corpus, and the Geneva Conventions are nothing but a bugaboo anyway.

  19. Tom3 says:

That White House email system was supposed to be foolproof.

    Chimpy must have touched it.

  20. Sharon says:

This is so much bull shit…BULL SHIT I SAY…..

My Dear Madam Speaker Palosi, We the people demand that impeachment of this administration be put back on the table immedietly…Investigation’s must be formost now…Time to start pushing now poster’s and if they don’t respond we march and if that dosn’t work we send them letter’s we are going to start recall’s and vote in people that will do the job…..Blessings all

SHOULDN’T THE NSA HAVE THESE EMAILS IN THEIR DATA BASE???

  24. hellinabucket says:

    #14 Best observation yet.

  25. Tom3 says:

Hopefully these outrages will register with the voters and the Repukes will all be thrown out in 2008.

I don’t see how any sane, rational person can vote Repuke at this point. They have committed too many crimes like this.

History is not going to be kind to Chimpy and the Repukes. They will be blamed for torture and treason and attempting to destroy the Constitution and the rule of law in this great nation.

  26. Uncle Ho says:

“my dog ate the homework”x 5,000,000 times.

  27. ValiantVenusGrewFromUranus says:

Another fine example of GOP outsourcing to Halliburton. Republicans would lose their heads up their *ssh*les if we didn’t stop them. Wait, we forgot to stop them! ;)

  28. I WORFEUS says:

Well I used to work in IT and I can tell you this does not happen.

You don’t lose 5 million emails.

    Not without help.

  29. ann says:

    My. How incompetent.

  30. Zimzone says:

Executive Office of the President (EOP) has lost over FIVE MILLION emails…
    along with any credibility.

  31. goehl says:

If we buy the fact of 5 million LOST emails, then isn’t this in itself grounds for impeachment because of incompetency?

  32. DM says:

#21 Sooo true. But just maybe they were of Rove biting the heads off of said puppies? ;)

“re: re: puppies for sale” is a common term in our office (IT) for any chain-link email stream that we cut off and destroy with crude vigilance.

  33. Republicans are the fear and smear party says:

Somebody needs to explain to these rethuglicans that you can’t establish people’s trust in government just by saying, “Trust us.”

  34. Marie says:

    5,000,000!!
These are the folks that have tracked domestic phone calls, emails and other communications, but they have “lost” five million.
They are not lost – they are simply buried.
The Dems will be in need of additional clerical help to screen those emails when they are unearthed – we should volunteer.

  35. Tom3 says:

Maybe this will be the straw that broke the Chimpy’s back.

Maybe enough Repukes will be outraged to cross the aisle and vote to censure Chimpy or even Chimpeach him.

That’s why Pelosi took it off the table. She knew she didn’t have the votes. Maybe that will change.

  36. I WORFEUS says:

The worst part is we knew they would pull this shit.

We knew that if they got cornered, they’d simply say the evidence is gone.

Well there are about a dozen federally mandated regulations on document retention and data warehousing and if these emails are truly gone then someone is going to jail.

Regardless of what the emails said.

  37. Spudge_Boy says:

“Well, when a president does it, then it is not illegal.”
    - Richard Nixon

Anybody want to take bets on Bush trying to use this bullsh!t line too?

  38. Marie says:

I can’t open the links at this moment – WHO first notified the WH counsel about the Emails?

  39. Tom3 says:

Speaking of email chain letters, the Repukes are sending out one with a lot of lies about Social Security. Basically, it blames everything wrong with Social Security on the Democrats, which is a lie. And of course it says we must give Social Security to Wall Street to save it, which is another lie.

We need to start taxing income over $90,000 and make the rich pay their share of Social Security. Get rid of the tax cuts for the rich, too.

  40. Marie says:

Wasn’t Harriet Meiers the White House Counsel at that time?

  41. I WORFEUS says:

If we buy the fact of 5 million LOST emails, then isn’t this in itself grounds for impeachment because of incompetency?

    Comment by goehl — April 12, 2007 @ 3:14 pm

    Worse. They broke Federal law.

There are dozens of regulations and requirements from FISMA to FISCAM to the GLB Act, ISO requirements and much much more.

IF these emails are really gone, then they are in violation of federal law.

  42. Raven says:

I think he already has used the Nixonian line, if not in so many words…

  43. bluefish says:

    Five million e-mails lost.

I find myself actually hoping that it is criminal behavior on the part of the administration, because the alternative, sheer incompetence, is just a little too frightening.

  44. Tom3 says:

In addition to breaking recordkeeping laws, this is a clear case of obstruction of justice. There is no way this happened by accident.

Anybody who still supports Chimpy is supporting a criminal.

  45. raynman says:

Well, when Rove emailed Jeff Gannon at http://www.hotmilitarystud.com to tell him what questions to ask at the next White House Press Conference, it must have generated a lot of spam…..

  46. Lupeyg2 says:

Send a letter to your Senator/Representative

Here’s an example of what I wrote – feel free to copy.

    Senator/Represenative _______,

As you know, upon becoming President of the United States of America, you take an oath of office that states: I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. This is the most important duty of the office. The current President and administration has made numerous efforts to circumvent and disregard the very same thing he has been asked to uphold; the latest of which regards the keeping of official communications to and from the Executive Office of the President. While I can only speculate as to the reason for this disregard of official policy, it none the less shows the contempt this administration has for our Constitution, and it is just the latest example of such disdain. It is now your responsibility to our country and to our Constitution to implore Representative Pelosi to begin impeachment hearings.

    End here for Democrats
Tack this on to the end for Republicans

While I know you are of the same party as President Bush, I cannot imagine that you hold the same contempt for our Constitution and for the laws that have held this country together for so long. Please, do not allow party loyalty to keep you from doing what is right and necessary to keep this country strong and our Constitution protected.

    House of RepsSenate

  47. Zimzone says:

    I AM NOT A CROOK!

Americans need to understand that those e-mails were part of our war on terror. They are now classified. They were addressing issues with the real terrorists, the Democrats & the Liberal Media. Karl told me so. Karl would not lie to me. Karl is a good boy. Karl got me this job. I’m not sure how many 5 million is, but I don’t think it’s such a big deal. We have to support our troops. Don’t believe what you read or hear, because I dont’. That seems to work well for me. I only believe what Karl says. And Laura. And Barney. And Dick. And me. Did I mention Karl?

  48. dantediroma says:

  52. MikeS says:

Where is the accountability? Where are the consequences for this pattern of grotesque incompetence and mismanagement and obstruction? I mean this administration continually gets away with a smirk and a statement of “Oh well, we didn’t mean to, we’re just not very good at this.” *shrug* “Now give us more power.”

Enough of this crap!!! Impeach somebody fer cheeses sake.

  53. Karim says:

How does one lose 5 million emails?

  54. I WORFEUS says:

As far as I know Federal law says that political orginazations like the RNC have record keeping retention requirements.

Also since these emails were done as part of their offiical White House functions then there is also other requirements to retain records and communications.

This is the equivalent of a massive “paper-shrredding” party.

    Nothing more.

    3. Special Prosocuters have to be autherized by the Attorney General

    4. The law allowing independent prosocuters has expired during the last 6 years.

Impeachment is the only option left.

To be honest, whats stopping the next white houes from being worse? Nothing, as long as the White House has at least 40 loyal paristans in the Senate that won’t vote to convict an impeachment charge there is nothing the executive branch can’t get away with.

  64. Blaarg says:

Hey morons: Sandy Berger was investigated by the Ashcroft justice deptartment and found he destory NO ORGINAL COPIES – can you get that through your thick skulls?

Unless you’re going to tell me that ASHCROFT would have let him off easy, then Sandy Berger commited a minor crime. Certainly not even comparable to 5 million deleted emails right after a subponea was issued for many of said emails.

What kind of house were you wingnuts raised in anyway? “If Clinton jumped off a bridge, would you do that too?”

  65. Dogjudge says:

Gee, I wonder if the administration has hired anyone from Arthur Anderson recently?

  67. Kim Matthews says:

  68. Chris L says:

This is great. The next time someone is audited by the IRS, and they request e-mails or other electronic data related to payroll, just go ahead and tell them you lost it. The US government seems to be so understanding when the average person loses sensitive electronic data.

If I told our state Attorney General that we ‘lost’ even a single email our company would be in some serious hot water. 5 million? Our AG would have us jailed until somebody figured out where all the emails went.

  75. pgw says:

according to tpm muckraker, these 5 million e-mails are IN ADDITION TO the “lost” RNC e-mails

  76. veritas says:

THIS IS PURE BULL*HIT! It’s called “destruction of evidence” which means in legal terms “intentional obstruction of justice”. Let the indictments roll then…

  77. veritas says:

The plot thickens and soon it will be totally irrelevant to even have Gonzales testify because the “obstruction of justice” will trump the situation just like it did for Nixon. NO-NO little sticky fingers. Obviously, these fools read the book written by Nixon but forgot the part about the real reasons why one gets impeached. It’s not the information, stupid – it’s the lying about the information. It’s not the emails, stupid – it’s the lying about the existence of the emails and destruction of prima facie evidence. It’s now over for these thugs and the sooner they are dismissed from office, the better for this country.

What little respect & trust anyone has had is totally evaporated now.

  78. veritas says:

#71 When one initiates indictments for “complicity”, the last Congress can and will be, individually and wholly, responsible for their continued votes to enable this usurpation of power by the executive and obstruction of justice in enabling him and his cabal in the breaking of existing laws.

  80. veritas says:

I believe that a “class action suit” brought by the citizens of the United States against the 109th Congress will follow for their “aiding and abetting” the destruction of justice in this country. Maybe then those elected officials will realize the importance and significance of their votes.

  81. BlueArkansas says:

No evidence? No historical context? That sounds more like a critique of the b*llsh*t you post.

Do you really need a comprehensive list of the scandals, corruption and dishonesty of this administration? Are you truly that blind and st*pid? Wait, I’ve seen your posts. Nevermind. Someone like you will always avoid reality.

Do me a favor *ssh*le. Prove one administration is more corrupt than this one. Do a factual comparison – please. Number of convictions, number of resignations, number of laws broken. No matter how you slice it. This IS the most corrupt administration ever. But if you really need to continue your fantasy world – by all means. Take another hit of meth, and hide in your trailer until 2008. We appreciate your ignorance, it only ensures your continued electoral failures.

  83. Dogjudge says:

    No shit, Sherlock.

If that’s all you’ve got — Berger going around the bend one day, and stealing and destroying COPIES of documents — you better go back to the Clenis.
