Abstinence-only programs have failed.

By Amanda Terkel on Apr 13th, 2007 at 5:23 pm

Abstinence-only programs have failed.

The latest federal report on abstinence-only programs shows that they have had “no impacts on rates of sexual abstinence.” RH Reality Check has more analysis of the failures of the Bush’s administration’s failed sex ed policies.

Maybe because we are not serious about it? How many times did the Wright Brothers fail before flying? Thomas Edison before the light bulb worked?

So the “just say no” fantasy is unrealistic, whoda thunkit

  3. Willy says:

The only thing the Bush administration knows how to do right is how to fail.

  4. Topper Harley says:

Of course they failed. Jake was born.

  5. Raven says:

Your parents obviously didn’t know when to quit while they were ahead………

  6. Saywho says:

Boys have a penis and girls have a vagina LOL

  7. Topper Harley says:

Jake seems to think that invention is the same thing as not having sex. What a young little turd blossom he is. In the Karl Rove mold too. I

  8. Jake says:

It’s too bad we can’t even afford more than $50 million for this program, and that 1% improvement isn’t “significant” too anyone (except maybe those teens and their parents ; )

  9. Proud Dem says:

here’s the best way to teach abstinence….

“don’t have sex before marriage, if you do, you’ll give birth to a BUSH”

  10. Topper Harley says:

Poor, poor, Jake. His predsident is fading and his hereos will soon be in Jail. But he continues to fight like a good little Nazi. Too funny.

  11. Rick says:

And now a fast word about oral contraception: I asked a girl to have sex with me and she said “no.”

  12. Captain Kirk says:

    thinkprogress.org being dishonest…

this study only looks at the first four early programs that came out in 1996. It doesn’t look at later programs.

thinkprogress.org, typical liberal site…..half-truths, with a bunch of lies…the sad part is that the liberalbots and the anti-Bush cult members and the hate anything conservative club members will swallow your half truth as if a god had spoken.

reminds me of how the communist and the nazis operated.

    sad, sad…..

  13. pgw says:

what do you expect from a bunch of people who can’t manage their e-mail accounts. well, at least this administration failure won’t have any long-term or life-changing effects.

  14. rabidbunny says:

No matter how much they spend on abstinence or any other sex education, it can’t compare to the hollywood and mtv over saturation of sex. It’s all about the green and sex sells and kids are going to pay a lot more attention to all the sexual images than any message put out by the government.

  15. JesusChrist_GodofWAR says:

Isn’t this Bush The Smarter’s fault? Remember, if he’d pulled out in time we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in now. Bush The Dumber would never have been… well… you know… it’s that abstinence thing…

  16. Captain Kirk says:

why the half-truths thinkprogress.org? afraid that your site wouldn’t be around if the full-truth came out?

why do you guys take advantage of the ignorance that is so abundant in liberals?

I guess just like Lenin you consider your followers useful fools, right?

    how sad…

a bunch of idiots blaming Bush on programs that were created back in 1996….liberals don’t get more ignorant than this right Willy?

you might want to look at the study done of these programs before you blame Bush you anti-Bush cult members.

you might also want to look into the FACT that these programs were started by Congress, with the blessing of members from both parties.

you might also want to look into the fact that the study comes up with a very logical conclusion…..instead of just talking to children about abstinence in elementry and junior high, abstinence programs should also be taught during the high school years and college.

but thinkprogress.org is NOT interested in telling its liberal ignorant audience about these facts, it is only interested in smearing anything that it believes was created by conservatives.

typical nazi and communist tactics in order to control the super ignorant masses.

  17. Jake says:

There were over 21 million 15-19 year olds in the U.S. in 2000 — I think 210,000 (1%) more waiting for sex until marriage would be a “significant” improvement TO society, not just those teens and their parents. YMMV.

  18. Jake says:

Good point, Captain Kirk — I would even take a 1% improvement on the dismal stats for now. Maybe instead of spending more money on sex education, we could use the money to pay kids NOT to have sex?

  19. pgw says:

as long as we’re all clear that this has nothing to do with taking money from planned parenthood and funneling it to “faith based” abstinence programs that are run by people who donate big money to republicans

  20. Raven says:

    #13.
You are absolutely correct with this post.

  21. trueblue says:

Reminds me of Al Franken sending letters to all of these neocons asking for their “abstinence” stories.

He said it was for a book he was writing, called,
    “Savin’ It”

Although he was very sincere in his request, none of them offered their tale of never having sex before marriage.

    Hmmmmmmmm………

  24. Captain Kirk says:

why are you liberals so ignorant? the programs that were studied are programs that were created back in 1996.

do tell liberals, who was President in 1996? I mean if we are going to play, blame the President game….be sure you blame the right PResident…..

what a bunch of ignorant fools that post on this site.

thinkprogress.org has to be laughing its behind off seeing how easily it is able to control the liberals mind.

cut him some slack, he’s [supposedly] 75. abstinence is not a choice for him.

  27. Captain Kirk says:

    Grand Moff Texan,

is that the best you’ve got? are you so ignorant and so easily fooled that you can’t respond to the FACTs….

1)The study looked at programs from 1996….NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION.

2)The study concluded that in order to improve abstinence programs, these should also be taught in high school and in college.

I am sure you liberals don’t care whether your 14 year old daughter is having sex with a 50 year old becausee YOU taught them that it was ok to have sex with whom ever, when ever, but of course, safe sex, right?

    You were saying?

  36. Jake says:

For the record, Franken apologized for “any discomfort” caused to conservative leaders, stating that they would receive a letter of apology, such as the one he wrote to Attorney General John Ashcroft after asking him for his personal story about remaining abstinent before marriage, especially since Franken used Kennedy School of Government letterhead and deliberately tried to mislead Ashcroft:

“In the letter, I indicated that I wanted your story for a book about abstinence-only sex education entitled ‘Savin’ It!’ I claimed that I had already received testimonies from several conservative leaders, which I had not,” he wrote.

“The letter was sent as part of a satirical book I’m working on, which will contain only one or two chapters dealing with abstinence-only sex education.”

In June, Franken wrote to Ashcroft requesting his personal story, adding that he had already received testimonials from National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson and values guru William J. Bennett, among others.

In encouraging Ashcroft to submit his story, Franken asked the attorney general to reveal honest and personal details about his younger days.

“Don’t be afraid to share a moment when you were tempted to have sex, but were able to overcome your urges through willpower and strength of character. Be funny!” Franken wrote. “Did a young woman ever think you were homosexual just because you wouldn’t have sex with her? Be serious! Were you ever taunted and made to feel bad or ‘uncool’ because of your choice? But most of all, be real. Kids can sense a phony a mile away.”

That’s right, who cares about statutory rape anymore — just a barrel of laughs now a days — here’s to Minnesota’s next SENATOR!!!!!

OK, then please enlighten us. Let’s have the data from later programs. That’s all you have to do to win an argument with most of us. Now, I’m talking about legitimate data. I don’t want a “some people say” kind of thing you might get from one of your christian propaganda sites. You claim there are later programs which would help us to greater understanding of this issue. LET’S SEE THE DATA!

Indeed it has. But it does give ReichWingNuts and ChristoFascistTerrorists comfort in knowing that their religion does not require them to think for themselves. That would be too scary.

  42. ForTruth says:

Maybe there is a middle ground kirk. Maybe we can look at abstinence as the preferred option, but we educate youth on the subject and teach them how to avoid pregnancy and STDS. Maybe we can address the constant barrage of images the media throws at children which encourage sexual activity. Maybe we can see who is making money from encouraging sexual activity. Mabye we can look at cultural issues. Look at the entire picture. What has changed from when teens used to rarely have sex, and why it has changed so much. There is not one area to blame.

If the parenting is good, and the teen has an open line of communication with the parent, the odds of risky behavior diminish significantly. If the parent is authoritarian, and black and white, the teen won’t want to talk to the parent. We alienate the teens by demanding they just don’t do something, and it encourages them to do it more since the authorities have told them not to. If we stop talking down to them and engage them on the level, they will have a dialogue with us about it. We can address the reasons for this behavior.

That all would be too complicated and inconvenient for the average Repuke. They would rather just force thier will on them.

I can’t wait until your computer gets seized you filthy old man. Your the only pedophile that’s brought up the subject of old men having sex with young girls. Of course your into that whole “chastity ball” thing where fathers treat their daughters like property and make them swear to only “do daddy” until they’re married.

Jake, I suspect nobody here is surprised that you don’t get Franken’s intelligent brand of humor. I’m certainly not surpised. Satire is humor for intelligent people.

Let me guess: you thought the title of his previous book, “Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot, and other thoughts,” was a cruel attack on fat people, right?

I think the same negative effects can happen when parents are too laid back with their children. I’m talking about the parents that want to be best friends with their kids and not parents. I was watching the movie Mean Girls on TBS the other night and the mom on that fits the best friend definition of the parent perfectly, her kid treated her like garbage. I used to have a friend that had a mom like that and she was having sex at 14. I agree that parents can’t just be authoritarian with kids, but they also need to set the line of who the parent is.

That’s called within the “margin of error”, a place you LIVE – IN ERROR.

How do those parents feel about their sons being 6 times more likely to engage in An*l intercourse, or the increase in STDs and unwanted pregnancies from high risk sex?

Jake thinks kids just need to “try harder” to not have sex. Jake you mentally brain dead piece of sh*t. There’s a reason why CHILDREN were forced into marriage at an early age. People want and even NEED to have sex. Something I’m sure a DOWN LOW closet case like you understands. How much does it cost for METH and MAN WH*RES these days Jake?

  81. Zep Tepi says:

No, we should let the GOP use our taxpayer money to support terrorists in Iraq and purchase a welfare country of millions of people that hate us right Jake? We should blow up their old delapidated power plants and other structures so we can BUY them new stuff with our tax dollars right Jake? We should free these poor people and then support them thru welfare and ignore our own people, right Jake?

  82. Zep Tepi says:

It’s too bad we can’t even afford more than $50 million for this program, -Jake

Yeh, maybe because it’s a failed REPUBLICAN program passed when the REPUBLICANS controlled congress?

But then again JAKE it’s more important to spend much more than this DAILY on DOD contracts to create weapons to kill and maim? To shoot Camels up the butt is surely worth a million dollars right Jake!!

  83. KRank says:

I guess I’ve joined the illustrious company of those on the Ignore Listâ„¢ who have successfully compelled Jake to break his own moratorium and respond.

rapidbunny, if you were asking where I got data on abortion rates and teenage pregnancy by state, that information is at the CDC. I think the site is http://www.cdc.gov. You have to search through the site for the data, but it’s there. In my opinion, the reason rates are higher in red states has to do with education and religion. Generally, in blue states you have more education and less religion.

Aren’t you amused at the force by which these wacko wingnuts ‘believe’, without ‘knowing’ anything? They don’t have facts, knowledge, or reason – but they ‘believe’ they know the answer. What a bunch of losers.

A better question is how can you possible believe you’re an informed person who’s qualified to comment on this topic and NOT know this? Typical republican. Actually what’s atypical about you is that you ‘claimed’ you’ll look at it. Most of you j*ck*sses act like Jake, and simply refuse to look at any ‘facts’ that might educate you.

Then again, I’d wager you’ll look at this link and learn nothing, and forget you even saw it by tomorrow so you won’t have to change your mind.

In my opinion, the reason rates are higher in red states has to do with education and religion. Generally, in blue states you have more education and less religion. Comment by Bluedog49 — April 13, 2007 @ 6:50 pm

It’s not that blue states have less religion, it’s that they have fewer religious *nuts* like JakeOff and rabidrat.

The blue states are plenty religious, they just are more secular in their politics, and more reasonable in their practice of religion. It’s interesting how the blue states have lower divorce rates than red states as well – for similar reasons. There’s a reasonable attitude in the blue states that just doesn’t exist in the uptight, rigid and out of touch red state, redneck parts of the country. Men in the red states in particular believe it’s their right (think JakeOff) to be an *ssh*le to women, so they get divorced (like Jake will surely experience) more often to escape these *ssh*les.

What if it’s An*l and involves bondage? Does that turn you on?

    What about sex with yourself?

What about if your wife divorces you, then what do you do?

What if you fantasize about another woman (or man)?

Because you falsely claim to be a Christian, and the ‘bibbble’ is very clear that either of these acts means you’re going to h*ll. So I guess you better get your passport ready!

Yes you can pretend to ignore my post, but I know that you will still read it. In fact, Jake, there was a Texas politician who just promoted a tangent to and opposite from sex.
    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070324/od_nm/texas_abortion1_dc

Will it work? I doubt it. Would I have pledged not to have sex? Probably. But that is like promising to break your promise.
Humans, Jake, are creatures of emotion and feeling. Words make us angry, feelings create desire and angst. War is surely a product of hate. Can you Jake promise to go to war for 1,000 dollars? Can you promise not too ever get angry for 1,000 bucks? Can you promise to never love (non-sexual) for 1,000 greenbacks?

So then Jake, money is not a solution to war or sex. Humanity is, by nature destructive yet loving. How so can one come to know emotion but not dwell upon it? Can one teach higher thinking at a young age? How can man come to realize that he is but slightly compressed matter and that what is real isn’t really that real? That man is but a very small insignificant thing when viewed from afar?
But this is the truth, but man cannot forego that what he really is, it’s like virtual reality. Sure I can accept that, and its a tough battle to realize that your thoughts are much bigger than our material world.

That, really, then is the problem, what then is the solution? fear? Might? Spankings? Education? Realization? Rewards?

  124. pgw says:

hmmm. teaching kids to put a dollar amount on sex/virginity. using tax dollars to pay for it. and not having any way of making sure the kids are keeping up their end of the deal. now that’s a great plan. if there was only some way to involve halliburton and a no-bid contract…

  125. JPark says:

#115 No way. I was a male teenager. Of course I wouldn’t give up sex for $1000. Do you remember being a teenager (and I am being very generous in assuming you aren’t one)? Hormones rule the 16-18 year old boy.

  126. Jake says:

For the record, there are plenty of ways to make sure someone stayed a virgin prior to collecting the $1,000 — as just one example, an OB/GYN can examine the hymen on females, although that’s not 100% and obviously no similar visual examination is possible for males so maybe something like a tracking device will be needed for certain. If anyone NOT on the “Ignore List” wants to discuss this, or other options, let me know.

  127. Jake says:

In addition, $1000 was quite a bit more money in 1949 than today. How about $10,000 % $50 million = 5000 kids we could save get to spend more time and effort studying, basically paying for all but the most expensive 4 year colleges.

  128. Jake says:

While this government report looked at only four specific sex-ed programs, there are other studies, including this one from Texas A&M that shows abstinence works: Students more likely to abstain:

Poor little pathetic thing, so little *control* in his life (reminiscent of Aphrodite’s eating disorder), the only thing he cant *control* is his little pathetic list of cowardly refusal to stand up for what he believes. What a little whiny loser!

I hate to inform you of this, but your *values* are identical to the right wing Iranian government. That’s why re-attachment surgeries for young girls is one of the most common operations in Iran.

What a fringe lunatic JakeOff is!

The man is a flat out Taliban freak!

  138. Jake says:

For the record, physical exams or other options are available for an*l sex as well. If anyone NOT on the “Ignore List” for personal attacks needs to discuss those options, let me know.

  139. Jake says:

Back to human females, the hymen is a membrane, part of the vulva, which partially occludes the entrance to the vagina and which may be physically torn when the woman first engages in sexual intercourse. The human hymen can vary widely in thickness, shape, and flexibility. The presence of an intact membrane is often seen as physical evidence of virginity, but its absence might not indicate the opposite.

In the majority of women, the hymen is sufficiently vestigial as to pose no obstruction to the entryway of the vagina. The presence of a broken hymen may therefore indicate that the vagina has been penetrated but also that it was broken via physical activity or the use of a tampon, etc. Many women possess such thin, fragile hymens, easily stretched and already perforated at birth, that the hymen can be broken, or merely disappear, in childhood, without the woman’s even being aware of it.

In contrast to the common cases of an absent or partial hymen, in rare cases a woman may possess an imperforate hymen, such as prevents the release of menstrual discharge. A surgical procedure known as hymenotomy which creates an opening in the hymen is sometimes required to avert deleterious health effects.

The presence of a fully intact hymen, however, is an indication, but no guarantee, of virginity, given that it is speculated that some degree of sexual activity may occur without rupturing the hymen and the availability of hymenorrhaphy surgical procedures to repair or replace the hymen. That seems like a big effort just to collect $1,000.

  140. JPark says:

#136 You notice he only wants young women inspected and criminalized.

To be fair his fascist plan could only apply to women considering it is impossible to tell if a man is a virgin unless he has an STD. Kinda screws the old pay for no play plan he’s got there. Guess he didn’t think it through.

  141. pbg says:

Could somebody please tell me how you can stretch ‘abstinence -only’ into an entire course?
It seems to me that the program should last about 15 seconds.

    Don’t have sex.
You can’t get sexualy transmitted diseases if you don’t have sex.
You can’t get pregnant if you don’t have sex.
    So don’t have sex, mmmkay?”

–should pretty well cover all an abstinence-only program.
    I don’t get it.

Do they spend the rest of the time showwing pictures and saying, “This is the female geniral orifice. Guys, don’t put your thing in there! And especially don’t rub against thhat part! That’s especially bad!” and “Girls, this is a male reproductive organ. Don’t let it go there! Especially not if it’s attached to an actual boy!”
    Do they do that?

Or do they spend the time saying, “No, really, don’t have sex. I mean it! No, it’s a really bad idea to have sex. Really bad idea. So don’t have sex. Listen to me, I’m serioys! Let me tell you how bad an idea it is to have sex: really bad. so don’t have sex. And I mean under no circumstances should you have sex. Zip. Nada. Zilch. No sex at all. Whatsoever. Don’t. Yeah, you! In the back! Don’t have sex! Yeah, I’m yalking to you! Sex: don’t do it. Not nobody, not nohow! Fugeddaboud it! Sex–uh-uh. Nope. No way, José! N-O No! Don’t. Just don’t…”

Is that how they fill it up?

  143. Jake says:

I would want 50/50 split on the “reward” money between males and females — I’m sure there are ways to confirm male virginity although even I admitted it was easier for females — as I recall, in Roman times, the Vestal Virgins remained celibate for 30 years on penalty of death. They didn’t even need $1,000. To everyone NOT on the “Ignore List” have a good night.

    He’s the ultimate creep.

  156. JPark says:

#152 He certainly would love to recruit us into his death-cult but he believes too strongly to be a salesman. He can’t soften his image so as to be a good salesman for it no matter how much he tries. He is a failure as a recruiter but darned good at being a footsoldier.

  158. Zooey says:

    iamlgnd,

The rest of TP posters here seems to know that she is actually an anorexic 23 year old girl, is that true?

It is true. She used to comment here as Mighty Aphrod*te (sorry about the *, I’ll be deleted, otherwise), a high-priced defense lawyer, who owned her own firm, veteran, wife, mother, Christian, Jew, all things to all people. She tipped the scales when she recounted an adorable (in her sick mind) story about her dead child. We always knew she was a phony, and this story enraged those of us who are parents, as well as many others.

Someone — possibly ValiantVenusGrewFromUranus — finally tracked down her MySpace page and outed her. She disappeared for a while, but then showed up again as valiant venus. At first she denied she was MA, but eventually admitted it.

She still clings to her lies about being a lawyer and veteran, and claims not to have told the funny story about her dead kid. We know better.

Next time VVGFU is around, ask him to post the link to the MySpace. I think he’s the one who has it.

I’m not sure Jake really cares about recruiting to his death cult (like that!), I think he just really must, absolutely must be right at all times. Like a really old Exley.

So he’s either married to a woman who is tiny, hopeless and shrunken down to nothing, or he’s married to a woman worse than him. I hope it’s the latter. :D

#154 Oh, wow, I was deleted for saying her name? TP needs a software upgrade. That is pathetic. She is still a junk toting tranny.

  161. JPark says:

#156 I really don’t know. I am on the lipstick list also. So he is talking to nothing but newbies. Must make him feel pretty good about himself.

Yep, I saw your comment for a minute, but then it was gone. Using MA’s full name will get you gone everytime. I guess TP hasn’t picked up the new name. Oy.

What if I wanted to talk about Greek gods and goddesses? It COULD come up and you cannot talk about Greek mythology without mentioning the Goddess of Love.

Wow, that was quick! I should look at that, but I’m skeered…..!

  165. JPark says:

#159 Uh, don’t they have a moderator that actually reads the threads? Toodles is a dead givaway. A guy who hasn’t been on for a couple of months spotted it right away today.

  166. JPark says:

#157 I hate it when lying trannies are attractive. It makes me feel like less of a man.

22 years old…so she graduated from law school at, what, 20? She wouldn’t lie, would she???

  167. JPark says:

Of course, he/she also said she was a veteran so she must have served before law school :)

Heh. Just don’t talk about how “Mighty” she is. :)

Right, so you should. Oy. No accounting for taste. Did you see that bone sticking out of her back? *gag*

    Comment by JPark

Let’s see…4 years of college, 4 years serving in the military, 3 years of law school…..hmmmmm….things just don’t seem to be adding up.

  170. JPark says:

But that doesn’t work because it is Aphrodite that is banned right? Bye-bye, sweet post. Parting is such sweet sorrow.

  171. JPark says:

#167 The only answer is…she is a prodigy!!!! Oh, wait, she is dumb as a box of rocks. I am confused now. How is it possible??? :)

  172. JPark says:

#167 Nah, I did notice the cartiledge sticking out of her neck though.

Actually, I don’t think they have a moderator. They have a filter of some sort — I call it the f*ck filter. I used to always get caught in it, not sure why. :)

She couldn’t be lying, could she? Nahhh, that can’t be it….

  175. JPark says:

Depends on what you mean by taste. I find Michelle Malkin attractive. King cobras are beautiful creatures. I wouldn’t let any of their fangs near my throat.

  176. JPark says:

#171 You just might be onto something!

To me, a person can be attractive until they open their mouth and the bile spills out, then they are ugly. No matter how they look. It works the opposite way, too.

#171 You just might be onto something!
    Comment by JPark

Next time she’s around, we should ask her if she’s a lying hellb*tch.

Could turn out to be problematic, if she really is a liar….

  179. JPark says:

#174 I somewhat agree. I can look at a picture and be physically attracted but if they spew neocon talking points…it kinda spoils it. They are ugly because personality overrides looks.

  180. JPark says:

#175 Yup, the old paradox. If she tells the truth she would have to be lying and if she lies she would have to be telling the truth.

  181. Zooey says:

    Comment by JPark

And even then it couldn’t be the truth, because she only speaks lies. Oy. This is going to be difficult. Let’s just ignore her instead. :-)

  182. JPark says:

#178 I am all for that. I ignore most of her hateful ranting but I do love to see you slapping her down. I would miss that!!

    I usually end up not being able to ignore her more disgusting shit. You’ll probably still see the slapdowns now and then. :-}

  184. JPark says:

    #180 Very enjoyable.

  185. JPark says:

I just checked back and yes, Aphrod!te was the word that got my post deleted. TP, you need better software!!!!!

Thank you for the myspace link vvgfu

But i really want to know how you found out about her, is it dumb luck or some computer skill is involved?

  190. rabidbunny says:

I posted twice yesterday links that show CA and NY, blue states, have the highest abortion rates by far while Idaho and Wyoming, red states, had the lowest. It also showed the vast majority of states with rates under 10 were red states. However, neither post showed up. I find that a little odd.

  191. Zooey says:

    rabid rabbit,

If you think REAL HARD, you might happen upon the populations of the mentioned states.

    CA – 36,132,147
    NY – 19,254,630
    ID – 1,429,096
    WY – 509, 294

    Duh.

No matter how hard you try, rabid idiot, you can’t make this a red state/blue state thing.

Alright fess up. When did you all lose it. Far as I know since my grandmothers generation, the age of lost virginity hasn’t changed all that much. I was 15. I am now in my 40’s. Given the chance to relive those years, I’d do the same. Why are we so hung up? I hope the young people we have asked to kill and die overseas throughout the years have enjoyed the gift of sexual contact wed or unwed. Can’t possible hurt a young soul anymore than asking them to kill or die or both. By the way the Dare program doesn’t work either.

    Uncle Ho,

VVGFU and valiant venus are not the same person. Valiant venus used to be Mighty Aphrod*ite, and VVGFU is her personal “troll.” :-)

Well said, dbadass, I agree 100%.

We are sexual beings, and having sex is completely natural.

Disclaimer: I am not advocating sex between children and adults!

  196. Uncle Ho says:

    Zooey; I stand corrected.

  197. Evil Spaniard says:

#140 I would want 50/50 split on the “reward” money between males and females — I’m sure there are ways to confirm male virginity although even I admitted it was easier for females — as I recall, in Roman times, the Vestal Virgins remained celibate for 30 years on penalty of death. They didn’t even need $1,000. To everyone NOT on the “Ignore List” have a good night.

    Comment by Jake — April 13, 2007 @ 11:37 pm

Oh, the great and moral times of the romans. Did you know that roman emperors used to have giantic orgies as fundraisers, and well, the senators that not attended, paying a HIGH amount of money, entered in The List ™ of the Emperor itself? (That meaning that some days later, the praetorian guard were knocking at the unpatriotic’s senator door asking for his head in a platter).

I hate to burst your bubble, but the numbers were based on rate, meaning per 1000 people. Wyoming had 2 per 1000 people and NY and CA had 37 and 39 per 1000 people.
