FLASHBACK: Cheney ‘Has The Same Sense Of Humor’ As Imus

n_imus_cheney_050120small.jpgIn the debate over Don Imus’ offensive comments about the Rutgers women’s basketball team, many bloggers and pundits have focused on the fact that despite Imus’ history of inflammatory remarks, politicians and media celebrities have continued to appear on his show over the years.

One big time politician, who has said that he likes to “listen to Don Imus in the morning,” has thus far escaped scrutiny for his relationship to fallen shock jock: Vice President Dick Cheney.

In January 2005, on the day of Bush’s second inaugaration, Cheney and his wife, Lynne, granted Imus a lengthy, exclusive interview, in which Mrs. Cheney affectionately referred to Imus as “the I-man.”

Asked to explain why Cheney chose Imus’ show for the big inaugaration day interview, long-time Cheney adviser Mary Matalin, who negotiated the appearance for the vice president, told the New York Times:

The vice president, she said, “has a wry sense of humor.”

He has the same sense of humor that Imus has. He thinks Imus is funny. He gets good guests on. And he asks good questions. It’s not really strategic or complicated. Not everything we do has to work on 50 different levels.”

Vice President Cheney has not yet been asked to comment on the Imus controversy, but given his past relationship with Imus, it might be worth some reporter asking if he still shares Imus’ sense of humor.

Digg It!

Transcript of a portion of the interview:

IMUS: I know you both have to go. My final question would be, I know voted for the other guy, you know, but that could all change if we could–and I’m willing to do this for full transparency, if we could make some sort of Armstrong Williams deal.

(LAUGHTER)

L. CHENEY: Oh, well, we’ve got one.

R. CHENEY: We do. We brought the bribe before you.

(LAUGHTER)

L. CHENEY: We’ve got it right here.

IMUS: Oh, you do?

L. CHENEY: Yes, we didn’t come empty handed.

R. CHENEY: This is very (INAUDIBLE) gifts, some pork chops for Pork Chop Boy.

(APPLAUSE)

IMUS: The vice president of the United States and Mrs. Cheney, thank you both very much.

R. CHENEY: No, there’s one more.

IMUS: Oh, one more?

L. CHENEY: We brought tofu, because we know Jerger (ph) doesn’t let you eat pork chops.

(LAUGHTER)

IMUS: Thank you both very much.

R. CHENEY: Thank you, sir. We enjoy the show.

IMUS: Good luck, and congratulations.

(APPLAUSE)

    Well..there you go.

    Cheney must resign.

  2. Kiki says:

Which proves that Republicans don’t have a sense of humor. Imus isn’t funny at all…when you could even understand what the hell he said, that is.

  3. Crump's Brother says:

This is dumb! Who the hell cares if cheney was on his show or shared a sense of humor with him.

  4. Badmoodman says:

    Totally a non-story. Moving on…..

I have the same sense of humor as Jon Stewart — are you going to call for his firing now too?

    Any DEMON (Cheney)…

…COPULATE L’il Dick Cheney, his closeted wife, ENTIRE bloodline, and political/ideological supporters…

  7. valiant venus says:

And then there are the progressive vulgarians who think Howard Stern is a r-i-o-t!!! And it’s amazing how much alike in the humour department Senator Byrd and Imus are!! (Matt – this is the best you could do to smear Repubs???)

  8. attaturk says:

I’m not sure how long his opinion has lasted, but I’m pretty sure for at least a year Imus has referred to Cheney as a “war criminal” who should be thrown in jail or worse.

I’m not sure that was happening then.

And now you’ve made me sort of defend Imus and Cheney.

    Bad Think Progress, Bad!

  9. barfly says:

The vice president, she said, “has a wry sense of humor.”

I think that’s spelled R-Y-E, Mary. Harry Wittington learned all about Cheney’s humorous streak; he once got both barrels.

  10. ForTruth says:

I don’t like Howard Stern (the radio guy).

    Quit generalizing VenaCava.

  11. dbschell says:

I think it’s ridiculous for the progressive community to take a stand
on this. Imus has been around for years. I’m not sure he believes what he says. He’s more of a character actor. He’ always looking for the next odd phrase or discription. I think he’s lost himself over the years. Maybe it was all the drugs. There was a time when the progressives of the day loved his show. If progressives want to go down this road then they are losing their hold on reality. We need common sense and grounded approach to issues. If you want discuss this crap go get a job with Star magazine.

  12. Parrotlover77 says:

I wonder if asking a question to him like that would instigate another “that’s out of line” comment.

  13. barfly says:

And then there are the progressive vulgarians who think Howard Stern is a r-i-o-t!!!

And since his listenership eclipses all others, that must mean the country has a liberal majority. Thanks for pointing that out, MA.

“Vice President Cheney has yet been asked to comment on the Imus controversy”

Can anyone actually locate him in order to ask? Isn’t he pretty much kept in an undisclosed secure location 24-7?

  24. not the senator says:

I’ve only heard Imus call him “Pork Chop Boy” and a war criminal over recent years. Just because Cheney likes those titles is no reflection on Imus.

    No you don’t.

You might appreciate his sense of humor – but you aren’t capable of creating the same yourself.

  33. Pete Bogs says:

then he should share Imus’ fate! lol

  34. jer3saw says:

Cheney and Imus are a lot alike. They both mumble all the time, so you don’t know what they’re saying. And, when you can understand them, neither one is funny. F**k Cheney and Imus.

  35. Fed the Fcuk Up! says:

    #29,
Just went to the “Events” section of the site and asked it to search the entire country for “Iraq War Protests”. Would you like to know what list it returned?

  36. Quadrajet says:

Here we go again, assuming Cheney is human – he’s a machine, dammit. He’s got no more of a sense of humor than a ‘58 Dodge.

  37. Rocks911 says:

#30 I guess I got in before the moratorium.

  38. Karim says:

So the robot thinks its funny to call women “nappy-headed hos”? Then he can come to Rutgers and say that himself. Bastard.

  39. chris says:

i’m guessing that Cheney hasn’t been asked his view because nobody gives a sh*t what this ancient warmonger thinks.

  40. Rachel Andrews says:

Actually, that was very gracious of the Cheneys to grant Don Imus that interview considering Imus supported the Democrat, John Kerry, in the 2004 election. It should also be noted that Media Matters reported that Imus’ guest list since January 2004 has liberals outnumbering conservatives by a margin of nearly 2-1. Imus has been very critical of the Bush Administration and I would hardly call him a conservative.

What’s most interesting is that Imus has actually gone easy on frequent guest Chris Dodd, even letting Dodd redirect a conversation that was leading into his infamous waitress sandwich with Ted Kennedy in 1985. http://www.newsmax.com/cgi-bin/showinside.pl?a=2002/2/5/135214 (something bound to come up if Dodd were to actually win the nomination or a place in a Democratic cabinet).

So to my friends at TP, takes Dodd advice when trying to smear Cheney over Imus – “don’t go there”.

  41. Alejandro says:

Dick Cheney is a nappy headed ho.

  42. Alejandro says:

Imus has been very critical of the Bush Administration and I would hardly call him a conservative.

He may be a conservative and that’s the reason he dislikes Bush so much. I actually don’t know much about Imus’s political leanings because I never really paid attention to him. (Who does/did?) “Real” conservatives hate Bush just as much as liberals do.

  43. Spudge_Boy says:

I have the same sense of humor as Jon Stewart — are you going to call for his firing now too?

    Comment by Jake — April 13, 2007 @ 1:45 pm

You have the same sense of humor as John STewart just like you are an independent.

  44. Rocks911 says:

    #34

I’m guessing not too many results, hence my reply of a shaved ice stand. As Lee Iacocca asked, where is the outrage?

  45. Rachel Andrews says:

As a real conservative, I do not hate Bush. AND I used to listen to Imus, but grew very tiresome of hearing him call Bush and Cheney war criminals. Imus is the type of guy who is going to go after whoever resides in the White House. He was very hard on the Clintons and turned sharply against Bush these past few years.

jake claiming he has the same sense of humor as jon stewart is the funniest thing jake has ever said.

and yet another bit of proof that jake is not 75. jake also watches south park and uses IM shorthand. and he has the exact same bio as a Mr Johnson (a real korean war vet).

imus may be saying bad things about bush now, but during the 2000 and 2004 election he publicly supported him. he also was a HUGE supporter of the Iraq invasion and fawned over his cod piece.

oh yeah, jake is lying scum don’t waste your time on him.

  50. Jake says:

For the record, I do believe I have a sense of humor like Mr. Stewart — I also enjoyed Milton Berle and Bob Hope back when they were broadcasting live — Chris Rock, not so much. I am 75 years old, but I’m not dead or a lying scum. YMMV (I looked that one up for the kiddies out there).

Your humor is as out of touch as you are…

Berle and Hope are alright, although Hope’s humor fell flat when he talked about politics. That normally sharp wit of his just shut down, and the partisan st*pid hack in him came out. Much like the *only* mode you have.

The other thing is there is more ‘reporting’ and dialog then the War in Iraq or Afghanistan. Least you forget New Orleans.

Oh well. Good luck with everything.

No, the funniest thing on TP is you, with your ego thinking we’re interested in what music you listen to and what you like to eat, your dead child jokes, your inability to spell legal terms while claiming to be an attorneyette, etc.

You’re a lunatic that’s proud of your dead baby jokes, pretend world, and fantasy ideas of blowing up the middle east. That’s the funniest thing – st*pid c*nt.

For the record, Mandela was condemmed as a “terrorist” by the racist, apartheid former rogue government of South Africa–not exactly the best judge of who is a terrorist.

  67. ValiantVenusGrewFromUranus says:

For the record, Mr. Mandella was imprisoned for his terrorist acts.
    Comment by Jake — April 13, 2007 @ 7:48 pm

Yeah, and the US captured thousands of people in Iraq and Afghanistan and labeled them as terrorists before they were released years later. Isn’t it convenient that they didn’t have to *prove* those people were guilty, otherwise they might have allowed thousands of innocent people to live their lives unnecessarily, just like Mandela.

The bigger irony is that a *real* terrorist like you, and your ruby ridge buddies walk free, while you imprison innocent people for years that have never threatened anyone. You do realize that for a while we were picking up any relatives of *suspects* and imprisoning them without any actions or evidence against them?

You’re a lunatic Jake, and a terrorist. You’re a threat to our democracy, as are your rightwingnut militia buddies.

  68. Jake says:

My mistake, I was thinking about a different Nelson Mandela, the co-founder of ANC’s armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe (translated as Spear of the Nation, also abbreviated as MK), which co-ordinated a sabotage campaign against military and government targets, and made plans for a possible guerrilla war if sabotage failed to end apartheid. After THAT Mandella’s arrest, MK did indeed wage a guerrilla war against the regime, especially during the 1980s, in which many civilians were killed. Sorry for any confusion to any of the lurkers out there.

Yeah, fighting back against a bunch of Neo Nazis running nation wide concentration camps. Good thing FDR didn’t have your opinion about the European resistance. Otherwise we would have helped Hitler put down his Jewish terrorism problem.

You’re a disgrace to the human race, and to those *lurkers*, your fate and their opinion of you was sealed.

You heard it here folks. Jake supported the Fascist South African and German governments against the armed resistance of those forced into concentration camps.

Jake, you’re a *fine* example of what kind person NOT to grow up to be. Who raised you, the Goebbels?

And guess who thinks the I-Man’s racist mysogynistic, triple-addicted sports announcer Sid Rosenberg is just da bomb?–George Sr and Beautiful Mind Barbara Bush!

Rosenberg on road to recovery at WAXY

Rosenberg poked fun at virtually every newsmaker during his four fractious years with Imus. A select few had a problem with his jokes. Mostly, though, Rosenberg was well-received.

“George Bush [Sr.] came in to visit with us one day and Imus was away at his ranch in Santa Fe,” Rosenberg recalled. “I spent about 20 minutes in Imus’s office. Just me, program director Mark Chernoff and President Bush. And he was actually reciting things I said on the show. I’d made so many wise cracks about his son and his daughter-in-law. I told him that I couldn’t believe he actually liked it. He tells me that it wasn’t just him. He said Barbara loves it and thinks I’m the funniest guy.”

  74. later says:

It was never going to be the I-man’s destiny to go out quiet. That is for sure. As far as the language, what the hell does it mean ? Let me ask all the readers out here right now; Did you have to explain twice to your wife, husband or mother or whomever the supposed definition of “Nappy headed hos” ? Sure you did. Its ghetto talk and white folk love to think they can talk ghetto talk to be cool, just like AA folks love to make fun of white folk’s straight attitudes. It hilarious. On the other hand, every other word out of a 10 year old AA child I heard in the subway last week was the N word. There is a pandemic of the word’s usage, but when it very rarely slips out of a white person.. then its reason for a mob to mobilize. Screw that attitude. There is a black cable station which I tuned into back when Colin Powell was SOS. Here it was Sunday morning and a few AA journalists were discussing how “Do we have a N in the White House or is he the White House N ?” I could not freakin believe it. But aha ! .. on the wrong day, at the wrong time, if you are a white folk and get caught using terminology (in this case Nappy Headed you know whats) that black folk use all the time to one another, well you could fall in “the big crevice” and they’ll get you.

That’s what happened to the I-Man. Too bad. He was one of the very few people in entertainment who raised and donated many many multiples of what he ever made – include in that category Jerry Lewis, Paul Newman. And every dollar of it went to color blind good use. In this case kids mostly. So, I hope he resurfaces in another form.

Oh yea Iman, thanks again for creating the feeding frenzy on the Walter Reed scandal over a month ago. I bet there are some GIs who have been getting better treatment because of it.

Also, to link to Republicans is stupid. Come on now. I despise Dick Cheney, but if he liked Imus that is at least one redeeming quality of the man. Imus was on the radio for 30 years because he made 99.99% of the people that tuned him in laugh. Period.

Oh, and satisfied now, Al ? There you go, now back to the graft.
