During his major Iraq speech last week, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) smeared congressional leaders who won the passage of legislation setting a timeline for withdrawal. “What were they celebrating? Defeat? Surrender? In Iraq, only our enemies were cheering.”
Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA), a former Marine and decorated combat veteran, responded aggressively to McCain’s comments during an interview with Bloomberg television:
I’m disappointed in John McCain. I’ve known him for many years. The day before we begin the debate on the Iraq bills, he pulled me aside on the Senate floor and said, Jim, we do not want the situation we had in the Vietnam War. We do not want one side impugning the patriotism of the other side, and John McCain has been doing this consistently since that time. I don’t believe that it is in anybody’s interest for members of the Senate to be impugning the other side’s patriotism, or by the way, to be hiding behind the troops as political justification for what we’re doing.
Watch it:
Transcript:
BLOOMBERG: Senator, in a speech this week at VMI, in your state, Senator John McCain gave an impassioned defense of the Iraq war and he criticized congressional Democrats for playing politics with the war. And he lashed at those, he said cheered when the legislation setting the deadline passed, and I want to quote him. “What were they celebrating? Defeat? Surrender? In Iraq, only our enemies were cheering.” Pretty tough stuff.
WEBB: I’m disappointed in John McCain.
BLOOMBERG: And you think he’s doing that?
WEBB: I think that John McCain and others have been doing that, and I’m very disappointed in it.
BLOOMBERG: Do you think he’s playing politics?
WEBB: I, you know, I think that John McCain has been impugning people’s patriotism and I really regret that he’s doing that.
Freedom is on the march, just march around the bodies, please.
April 14th, 2007 at 6:29 pmNice to know that the surge is working.
April 14th, 2007 at 6:33 pmIf I were to simply point out that the surge is not working, would Bush cultists accuse me of celebrating Bush’s failure? Bill Mahr said it very well: “If I’ve got a rat problem and I call the exterminator, and if that guy gets out a claw hammer and just starts running around trying to smash the rats, and I say, maybe there’s a better way, that doesn’t mean I’m for the rats”

From the article:
“WEBB: I, you know, I think that John McCain has been impugning people’s patriotism and I really regret that he’s doing that.”
There is a strong lesson here in how to tell the hard hitting truth while not leaving any hooks that the opposition can grab onto. Think about that. What argument could be made against these words and still both look and feel real? This kind of response will leave you speechless!
April 14th, 2007 at 8:05 pmThere is no denigration apparent here. No in your face anger or sarcasm. Just a powerful message of truth while accepting the reality of a sad situation that he can do nothing about. He then states his sadness (not anger) of that sad reality!
Absolutely beautiful!!! He is a rising star who will be heard from more and more as he gains tenure in the Senate.

April 14th, 2007 at 8:23 pmI am so sick and tired of this whole argument. There is nothing in Iraq to win, unless you are a Republic Neocon who will think they have won once the Iraq parliament signs the bill that will give US and British companies 70% of their oil profits for 30 years. It is the only “win” possible and the only people who will win are the oil companies and it’s shareholders. The people of Iraq certainly will not “win” with a deal like that. Bush and McCain will never talk about leaving Iraq until that bill is signed. They don’t care how many of our military have to die for oil. They are men without conscience and without a soul. There is a special place in hell waiting for them when their time comes.
April 14th, 2007 at 8:24 pmBut Jim, please understand, McCain is just Karl Rove’s marionette these days.
Comment by VerbalKint — April 14, 2007 @ 7:25 pm
So many of these guys are Rove’s marionettes you have to wonder if they’re not all blackmailed.
It would take only a couple of them to stand up and bravely say, this is the truth and I don’t care what they say about me. Apparently there aren’t any Republicans brave or patriotic enough to say they’ve had enough. None of them will stand up to the administration or even cast a vote against the party line.
I’ve never seen a President so totally disregard the wishes of the voters of the opposing party like Bush and that would be scary enough but EVERY Republican congressman totally supports whatever the administration wants.
It’s obvious they don’t care about America only their own power.
April 14th, 2007 at 8:44 pmIf only they could find someone it Iraq who would be willing to surrender to the U.S. then everything would be just peachy-keen, hunky-dorey.
April 14th, 2007 at 8:59 pmI hope that jusy maybe George will read this thread or post, or perhaps an aide and show this to him. I want to appeal to Georges rational side and I thnk that Karl Rove, a smart man if not a genius, and a political wizard of words, catchisms, phrases and talking points has become a detriment to Georges legacy. I have had best friends thru-out my life and I care deeply about them, but there always came the time that I simply could not agree with, nor cover for them.
The political environment during these last 6 years has become very divisive and spiteful. No longer are elections won by a persons good deeds or the virtue. Today they are won thru smear campaigns and complete fabrications and twisting of the truth. It is unfortunate that we as Americans who embrace truth and freedom as subjected to months and years of little lies and expensive and complex smear campaigns aided and abetted by the media.
President Bush, please take a moment to look past your personal friendship for the good of the Nation and to bring back respect for the office of the United States. Who knows when this all started, Maybe with Nixon, Maybe with Clintons affairs. Really it doesn’t matter who or when. I feel it’s time to stop this blame game and heal America instead of working to divide it during a time of conflict and worldwide unrest and change.
April 14th, 2007 at 9:14 pmFrom the article McBush says:
“What were they celebrating? Defeat? Surrender? In Iraq, only our enemies were cheering.â€
Can you smell the desperation here, folks? He knows the situation is nothing but devastation in Iraq. He served honorably in the Viet Nam era, and has truly experienced the reality of war. He knows what is going on, folks! He really knows what is going on.
He is not, as some would say, unaware. He understands completely, in my view. He made the conscious choice to sacrifice his understanding of reality, for political expediency.
And so, he really does know he lost his gambit in promoting the surge, and choosing his sharp veer to the right to suckle at the anus of the Evangelical right wingnuts. Kissing Bush’s ring after being smeared by him in 2000 was a choice that he feels he can not now reverse. He read the political winds at that time, and believed the wave of the future was the way of the neo-cons, and now he is twisting in the wind.
So, what is McBush to do in a situation like this, where he finds himself 180 degrees out of line with reality both politically and personally? Sadly he has, (again,) chosen consciously, to “stay the course” through a phony denial of the reality he sees and knows to exist.
It reminds me of the joke where the husband and his lover are in bed and the wife is pissed having discovered them making love. The conversation that has transpired is missing, and only the man’s response is stated. He says to his wife, “Who are you going to believe? Me or your lying eyes?”
And that is the question McBush (as well as the rest of this lying neocon cabal) is asking us as we stand at the foot of his political bed. “Who are you going to believe? Me or your lying eyes?”
Expect the desperate flailing to continue until he has to bow out of the race. I hope we all can stand the stench that a rotting politician gives off. On the right there are pungent smells coming from a bunch of them.
Pride goeth before the fall!

No. 15. You are a lovely person Zep Tepi. Your nurturing side is beautiful, and I would guess you don’t have a mean bone in your body. And I say that sincerely, with admiration and love.
That agreed to, it should be understood that there is a difference between what we want and wish for, and what is really going on, (otherwise known as reality.)
You believe, mistakenly in my view, that Georgie is basically a good man who just needs to see the errors of his ways and all will be OK. That he has in fact a “rational side” to appeal to. If only he would just listen, you believe. Very, very, sadly this is not the case.
Would you use this approach, stated in your post, to a murderer or serial killer? (Note to trolls: I am not calling Bush these things, it is an analogy.) I think not. No appeal to the presumed good side of an amoral person will have any effect. And in my view the people connected with BushCo are definitely amoral, regardless of how many Bible verses they spout. There is no possibility of fruitful bipartisan dialog that will happen. The only solution is to get Bushco out of any position where they can do any harm. Out of office and, where warranted, into prison.
Impeachment would be best but probably won’t happen. But 2008 is just around the corner and the new broom will sweep the bums out.

And you do? As I recall it was the Republicans who started this Iraqi Freedom operation, Shaha Riza was part of the Iraqi Foundation that Condi and Bremer signed onto. It was the Republicans who wanted to bring Democracy and freedom to the people you now call terrorists. It was a UN/US resolution to that allowed the use of force to enforce said resolutions. It was PNAC that wanted a regime change in Iraq long before the WMD lies hit the media. It was Saudi Hijackers not Iraqi Hijackers.
You, as always, Firehead, make inflammatory remarks based on what know to be misinformation and lies and you never make any substantial points or are able to debate.
This has never been declared a war. This ‘war’ was called Operation Iraqi Freedom. If you look around the world this neo-liberal neo-con plan to democratize Iraq has undermined the global war on terror. Billions of your tax dollars are going to rebuild a terrorist [as you say] country.
Really Firehead use your head for thinking instead of ‘fire’.
April 14th, 2007 at 10:00 pmFirehead, @18
April 14th, 2007 at 10:02 pmToo bad someone didn’t call the fire dept before whatever you used to use for brains had burnt to a cinder. Jim Webb knows as much as — if not more than — McCain, about war and its consequences. And, unlike McCaca, he has enough of a sense of honor not to spend his life boot-licking and ass-kissing.
It would appear firehead has been soundly kicked in his deadhead

Do you even google the persons name your about to lambast with your inane remarks before you smear a patriot Firehead?, or did you just see the word ‘Democrat’ and repeat the pundit class of shills modus operandi of lies and smear?

My favorite excerpt proving, from someone who has experienced it all firsthand and really knows, that Republicans are more corrupt than Democrats. Like we needed someone to tell us this after Nixon, Reagan (record smashing 29 convicted criminals in his Administration), Bush Sr. (pardoned Cap Weinberger and five others because their testimony under oath showed Daddy Bush himself was right in the middle of the Iran Contra scandal), and of course Baby Bush (2 convicted criminals so far and counting, and a ton of cronyism and corruption).

April 14th, 2007 at 11:24 pmMcCain is all over the map every day. He will will do or say anything he must do or say at any particular time depending on the situation at hand. He served and suffered honorably in Veitnam, but he has overleveraged the value of that experience. He is not of fit mind to be a Senator – much less President. I feel for him because he wants the Pesidency so badly, but he only damages his public image by continuing his campaign for the office.
April 14th, 2007 at 11:28 pmTHE FIRST THING ABOUT WAR:
Sun Tzu said:
From this it is obvious that Bush doesn’t know the first thing about war. While others predicted the situation we are in, Bush ignored them. The only ones who have profited from this war have lined their pockets with gold while other people’s children die. America is for the poorer because of this war. Yet still, the ignorant follow their leader, even to their own doom, all the while singing His praises.

Okay, you may have a point. But Karl is not gonna go anywhere until George thinks he’s a detriment to his legacy.
As far as George being impeached for this war I don’t think that will happen as most of congress voted for the resolution to use force and they simply won’t be able to impeach him. Thru history, nearly, if not all, Presidents have invoked war or some police action that killed many people.
Appealing to someones rational does not mean that I agree with them or necessarily think they are a good person. A serial murder as well rationalizes his actions one way or another and rationalizing with serial murders is not appeasing them but trying to find out what they are thinking so one can find and stop such murderous actions.
Thanks for the compliments, but I’m not irrational enough to beg for them to listen but to appeal to their desires or Ideology and USE that to promote change. =)

If your speaking of Merlins post I read it. I have never said George is a good man. Simply trying to point out that Rove is harming his legacy and should be let go. While Merlin makes some good points even mass murders rationalize their crimes. But hey if you guys want to act like them because thats the only way to cure them, be my guest, but remeber that you then become them.
As for thinking that they would control anyone because of appealing to their rational is, I think, not true. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

April 15th, 2007 at 12:11 amHow many times has engaging in a name calling contest ever cause a troll to think or to stop them from trolling?
I remember when IRI trolled here regularily and made many obnoxious and spiteful remarks. He wasn’t a very good person, but engaging in name calling only works to inflame the little trollips. It’s what pundits do. It’s what Rush does.
To rationalize with them is not pandering to them it defuses and debunks them. A blog that is full of name calling and hateful words is not informative or fun to read. It’s like watching Jerry Springer.

He has a predictable pattern of posting one message out of every 1 out of 4 or 5 threads per day, and then he’ll never post again in that thread. Zooey hope you’re feeling better soon.
My daughter lost her election for student council president. Unfortunately three 7th graders split the vote and a 6th grader won. She is hearbroken but I think in the end she’ll have learned a valuable lesson about elections as will the other 7th graders. One 7th grad boy who wasn’t eligible to run thought it would be funny to have people write his name in. Now when they are in 8th grade some 7th grader will be president.
I’ve always felt that the Ralph Nader and Jessie Jackson, who took votes from the Democrats and gave the election to Republicans were unfair to the people who supported them because they ended up with the worst candidate for them.
I think it’s important that people work together to get the representative who best represents their ideas instead of waiting for the perfect candidate. I just hope whoever gets the nomination we all work together to make sure there is not another Bush-like president for a long time.
I also hope that every now and then you give vv hell. Although her alter ego vv…. handles her extremely well.
April 15th, 2007 at 12:55 amShane,
I’m sorry to hear about your daughter’s loss. It certainly is a good lesson on how splitting the vote hurts the cause. She’ll know just how to handle her next election. :)

I’m just so tired of being angry and disappointed at the way this country does things, and the way we’re seen by the rest of the world. Our government is criminal, and why is that ok with 29% of the people? I just don’t get it. I’d have to move to New Zealand. I love the mountains, and the men sometimes wear kilts. :-)
April 15th, 2007 at 1:43 amI had gone thru a strange series of events BNF. Nothing is something. I wish I could describe it more, but people just call me crazy. I know of one other person who has gone thru this experience, but I cannot divulge that. It also relates back to Orion or Pi Cot Hori or Pisces Orion and manifestations (bending of light) and other such things.
I don’t much talk of it anymore cause people will think I’m crazy. =)

I used to have respect for McCain. Even though he was a Republican, and I’m a Democrat. I gave him credit for actually serving in the military, unlike Bush, who’s biggest military adventure was appearing in a flight suit on the deck of an aircraft carrier, safely in US waters, and proclaiming MISSION ACCOMPLISHED to a war that has been going on for years since his lame photo op! McCain is no longer someone I respect. He has sold his soul to a failed ideology. Why? Do the neocons have something on him that they are holding over his head? Not impossible by any means. I think he is doomed as far as his future political ambitions. His latest publicity stunt in Iraq has backfired! He lied to the American people, plain and simple! If he is to regain my respect, he would have to return to that peacefull marketplace in Iraq, without the benifit of being surrounded by a small army! Then, if he came out of there alive, and and wanted to make comments on what great progress there was in Iraq, I still wouldn’t believe a word he said, but I’d have to give him credit for having BALLS
April 15th, 2007 at 4:41 amAs far as Webb is concerned, I have the utmost respect for the man. His victory at the polls made me stand up and cheer.

I have to agree with you. It seems like McCain has sold his soul to the NeoCon agenda and since that flies in the face of past rhetoric, it makes him look foolish. He has always been a left leaning moderate paleo-conservative, and I get the impression that he doesn’t really believe in his new campaign positions. He is either getting some really bad advise or he has lost it. He’s not very animated these days.
On the other hand Webb displays confidence and a strong moral compass. His conviction and no bullsh!t approach against what he and most Americans see as a corrupt and souless party. He truly believes in what he is doing is moral and correct, and isn’t afraid of telling the opposition about it.

I know I keep harping about this, but if you want to understand the NeoCons read up on Leo Strauss (father of NeoConservatism). There is an excellent documentary that spells out who these people are and thier bent Straussian ideology.
The Power of Nightmares: The Rise of the Politics of Fear (2004) Part 1 (Part 2) (Part 3).
Everyone that is confused with regards to why these people (NeoCons) are so souless and corrupt? You need to understand that Straussian followers believe that society needs to be decieved for it’s own good, and that the elite that is choosen to do so can anything to meet this end.

..Bush Is Mobilizing The ENTIRE National Guard…
WASHINGTON, DC — I have two subjects to deal with today. The first is the completely disastrous military situation in Iraq and the second deals with deliberately poisoned food in the United States. In the first matter, it will soon become public that Bush is going to extend the tours of duty for troops to 15 months or, with some clever interpretation of the rules, to 20 months.
In addition to these draconian measures, be advised that a classified Pentagon report confirms what we already knew: that Bush is ordering all, repeat all, National Guard units activated (in discreet stages) for immediate shipment to Iraq. Legally, Bush can do this, but the political uproar is going to be immense. “National Guard (In Federal Status) And Reserve Mobilized As Of April 11, 2007
This week, the Army, Navy and Air Force announced an increase, while the Marine Corps and Coast Guard had a decrease. The net collective result is 1,030 more reservists mobilized than last week.At any given time, services may mobilize some units and individuals while demobilizing others, making it possible for these figures to either increase or decrease. Total number currently on active duty in support of the partial mobilization for the Army National Guard and Army Reserve is 63,689; Navy Reserve, 6,404; Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, 5,079; Marine Corps Reserve, 5,514; and the Coast Guard Reserve, 302. This brings the total National Guard and Reserve personnel, who have been mobilized, to 80,988, including both units and individual augmentees.”
http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/release.aspx?releaseid=10728
The press is being strongly advised by the White House and the DoD to “play this down” lest it cause “unnecessary political problems.”Also, there is a plan to reactivate many ex-soldiers who have completed their service within the past five years. This will be guaranteed to create even greater uproar but Bush is determined to do this and in the end, he will have his way regardless of Congress or the opinions of the American public.
The new “surge” troops are not properly armed; have absolutely no body armor, for example, and not is, or will be available, and the casualties are soaring. Bush’s goal of crushing any Iraqi resistance to the American occupation has been doomed from the start but no one dares to advise him of this dismal and growingly obvious fact.
Bush obviously has a death wish but unfortunately, the casualty rates of both American military personnel and the Iraqi civilian population (ca. 600,000 in four years) have absolutely no effect on
him.
Another Pentagon report on desertions in addition to a new one under date of April 9, 2007, speak of the exploding rate of desertions and the very strong possibility of mutiny. The Pentagon hopes that such rebellions would be in Iraq where they can be ruthlessly dealt with out of sight of the increasingly enraged American public. Shooting dozens of soldiers would be much easier in the privacy of Baghadad barracks rather then at Ft. Bliss.
Also, it is interesting to note that the highly sophisticated roadside bombs that are inflicting many deaths and terrible injuries were not manufactured in Iran but in Iraq! A bomb-making factory was recently uncovered (a full report will be printed here soon) in Baghdad and both the Pentagon and the White House were fully advised. The American media has been ordered to shut this off because Bush demanded it.

Otherwise, bang on target.

Hi, Zooey.
April 15th, 2007 at 6:43 amHave you ever actually been to New Zealand? I didn’t see any men in kilts when I was there, which, of course, doesn’t mean they don’t exist there–just that they weren’t around where I was. In any case, it’s a truly beautiful country–not just the mountains but also the color of the surrounding sea. When I was there, it was fairly chilly even in mid=December, which is supposed to be summer in the southern hemisphere. However, if you’ve been living in Idaho for a while, I suppose you’re used to chilly weather.
McCain is a tragic figure. I recall being so excited when he raised the idea some years back of running on a ticket with Kerry. Now I think he has sold his soul, as so many polticians eventually do, and he will say anything he thinks will get him closer to the GOP nomination. Sad case — and also a very sick , maybe now very dangerous, man.

April 15th, 2007 at 7:49 amwhy do I feel like I’m the only person in the world right now???
April 15th, 2007 at 7:54 amYes.Power of Nightmares etc. gives a great context to what has happened to this country since 2000. I always think back to the days after 911, the anthrax, the orange alerts, pictures of terrorist on the TV (How did they know who all the terrorist were so quickly?) Everything these people do is a Hollywood production feel to it. The neo-conservatives believe in what they are doing and have a hidden agenda. Everything that has occured could only occur after the Pearl Harbor-like incident that came on 911. Bush would never had been able to implement this radical agenda without 911. The neo-cons were well versed in the theory of Hitlers’Big Lie. It works because people can’t believe Americans can be that evil. (much easier to believe Arabs are evil). As far as McCain, Blackmail is not out of the question. Obviously the eavesdropping was more about politics than terrorism.

Thanks for the kind words, Merlin. That’s what music theorists are for, to come up with fruitful analyses (that is the plural form of analysis, Firefox needs to get that fixed), but to never really have any insightful comments.
Oh yeah, and global warming is totally f****ing up our climate. It’s really annoying. When the clouds are out, it is winter-like, and when the sun is out for multiple days, we have a drastic increase in temperature…spring weather has practically been abolished from our seasonal cycles. Boo.

April 15th, 2007 at 11:45 am“‘Impugning People’s Patriotism” and “Hiding Behind The Troops” is what the Bush administration has been doing all these years, since the invasion of Iraq was in the works.
It’s beginning to wear thin, and McCain should probably update his playbook, because the American public has begun to realize taking a stance against the Dear (mis)Leader’s initiatives doesn’t mean being unpatriotic.
I used to have some respect for this man. Not anymore.

No one ever mentions that the Senator suffers from a very, very, very bad case of PTSD due to his Vietnam combat experiences followed by his years as a POW….I know from personal experience that even if the major disabling symptoms can be ameliorated by treatment and the passage of time, certain permanent wounds remain which affect EVERYTHING one experiences. I really do not trust the Senator’s judgement and would absolutely NEVER trust him with Presidential powers….his erratic behavior would be a real danger to the world if placed in stressful situations. He will most definitely LOSE IT….his crazy talk after being in the Bagdag combat zone is clear evidence of this. I am certain that being surrounded by all those combat/war triggers while in a war zone unhinges him…He then tries to regain control by making hawkish statements. He is a danger to this country and should retire.
