Wolfowitz personally dictated girlfriend’s lavish pay.

The Washington Post reports:

In a memo to the bank’s vice president for human resources dated Aug. 11, 2005, Wolfowitz wrote, “I now direct you to agree to a proposal which includes the following terms and conditions.” Riza was to be “detailed to an outside institution of her choosing while retaining Bank salary and benefits.” She was to receive an immediate raise with approximate annual increases of 8 percent.

By 2010, when Wolfowitz’s five-year term expired, she would reach a salary of $244,960, significantly above the maximum of $226,650 allowable for her pay grade. On her return to the bank, she would be automatically promoted to the level of senior country director; if her return were delayed another five years by a second Wolfowitz term, she would be elevated to the level of bank vice president.

  11. ManipulationNation says:

Wolfowitz had no business going to work at the World Bank in the first place. He probably wouldn’t have qualified for an entry level position there, let alone the presidency. His experience in banking and development are scant, not to mention his credentials as one of the main architects of the destruction of Iraqi society.

Second, since he violated the rules on Day One of his employment there by already being involved in a relationship with someone who worked there, he immediately set a standard for corruption, which ironically, he appears to be trying to make his signature issue at the Bank.

Third, Wolfowitz works for the World Bank, the Bank doesn’t work for him. He needs to follow its rules. For him to dictate to the VP of Human Resources is ludicrous. And for him to dictate salary increases of the size that he did, simply to appease his girlfriend, who did not want to leave the Bank, is abominable.

But for Wolfowitz, abomination is something he knows much about.

Bill Maher laid it all out last night in what I felt was one of his best closing peices ever.

The Bush administration is guilty of “cronyism” like never before, and there is not just a trend, but a policy it seems, of hiring undereducated underqualified bottom of the barrel candidates to run our government.

Maher pointed out Monica Goodling as a prime example. Here’s a woman who had NO prosecutorial experience, and graduated from one of the worst schools in the country (according to college rankings), Pat Robertsons “MESSIAH U”. This is a bottom teir school and Goodling was put in charge of ALL of our seasoned and experienced federal prosecutors, not because she had any qualifications whatsover, but because she was in the click of the holy rollers.

This gal (female right?) got her job because one of the cronies liked her, and wanted to tap her. This is cronism on the family planning scale.

Its time to impeach the whole lot of them, and bring in people with you know, qualifications and skills and experience and sh$t.

That’s their plan… To take over the US and turn it into a Christian theocracy…

If Christian people work together, they can succeed during this decade in winning back control of the institutions that have been taken from them over the past 70 years. Expect confrontations that will be not only unpleasant but at times physically bloody…. This decade will not be for the faint of heart, but the resolute. Institutions will be plunged into wrenching change. We will be living through one of the most tumultuous periods of human history. When it is over, I am convinced God’s people will emerge victorious.
    – Pat Robertson, Pat Robertson’s Perspective Oct-Nov 1992

We at the Christian Coalition are raising an army who cares. We are training people to be effective — to be elected to school boards, to city councils, to state legislatures, and to key positions in political parties…. By the end of this decade, if we work and give and organize and train, THE CHRISTIAN COALITION WILL BE THE MOST POWERFUL POLITICAL ORGANIZATION IN AMERICA
    – Pat Robertson, in a fundraising letter, July 4, 1991

WASHINGTON – Of the top five outside international appointments made by embattled World Bank president Paul Wolfowitz during his nearly two-year tenure, three were senior political appointees of right-wing governments that provided strong backing for U.S. policy in Iraq. The latest appointment came just last month when former Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister Marwan Muasher was named senior vice president for external affairs.

Muasher served as King Abdullah’s ambassador here in Washington in the run-up to the Iraq war in 2002 and reportedly played a key role in ensuring Amman’s co-operation in the March 2003 invasion.

During and after the invasion, when he served first as foreign minister and then as deputy prime minister, he was considered among Washington’s staunchest supporters in an increasingly hostile Arab world.

I do know that the suicide rate among teens is also increasing each year… And a lot of people in Education think it’s tied to the pressure on these kids to pass all these tests, be Homecoming Queen, Student body President and get into Harvard on a full scholarship.

I don’t see why the crime rate couldn’t be just as linked to the system as suicides and drop outs… Makes sense. we live in an idealistic society of all-or-nothing, so if a kid can’t suceed in one area, then he certainly might think he’s a loser, so why not behave like one.

Try perhaps being crammed into a school with a bunch of other children under the same situation with broken decades-old heaters, air-conditioners that frequently break, teachers more concerned with hearing their voice than actually teaching, asbestos dust, and probably a good lot of schools with serious rat problems. I, too, was pleased with the closing essay on Bill Maher’s show last night. He clearly exposed the practice of Bush&Co to hire graduates from Messiah U and Pat Robertson’s Law School (from the bottom tier of educational ratings) and install them in high places.
For example, Goodling is 33, and one of the above noted alumnae, she has little or no experience, yet she was in a superior position over the US Attorneys across the nation, some of whom have lengthy resumes, been in practice for decades, and are graduates from some of the most prestigious law schools in America.
(Then again, what qualifications does AG himself have to be US Att. Gen?)

How insulting and embarrassing for US Attorneys to have to kowtow to the likes of Goodling and her 149 compadres in the Bush White House.

The 150 in the White House could be compared to the RNC campaign workers, Heritage Foundation clerks, and children of good Republicans (read campaign donors) who went to work for the CPA under Paul Bremer in Iraq and were put in charge of establishing their monetary system, their economy, and their government, losing $9 billion among other notable results.

And on top of that, Wolfie’s squeeze Riza was set up in a made-to -order position in a made-to-order foundation (funded with ~$36 million in US taxpayer dollars) with no other known board members so far: The Foundation for the Future,

The Foundation for the Future, as the effort is called, has made no grants and held only two board meetings since its creation 11/2 years ago. Though Shaha Riza, who has been romantically linked to Wolfowitz, is not listed as part of the staff on the organization’s Web site, she is the only person working in the group’s offices, located within the Henry L. Stimson Center, a think tank. The Washington office is listed as a “branch,” according to the site, which promises that soon a main office will be established in Beirut.

“It is basically just her running this thing,” said Tamara Cofman Wittes, research fellow at the Brookings Institution Saban Center for Middle East Policy, who closely tracks democracy programs in the region. She said the board members had no experience in grant-making and thus had “started from zero,” with no bylaws or grant-making guidelines.

She said the board has had a goal of trying to make its first grant by summer, nearly two years after the panel formed.

The U.S. contributed almost two-thirds of the foundation’s $56 million budget, according to the State Department, which says the foundation plans to hire a chief operating officer and chief financial officer next month.

Riza’s salary is paid out of World Bank (headquartered in DC, and ~19% funded by US) accounts is exempt from Fed income tax. So are most salaries of other World Bank staff tax-exempt, by WB’s charter, including Wolfowitz’s presumably.

So said a reporter on C-SPAN Washington Journal this morning.

  105. Madame Defarge says:

    According to Wiki:

By convention, the Bank President has always been a US citizen, while the Managing Director of the IMF has been a European. Although nominated by the US Government, the World Bank President is subject to confirmation by the Board of Directors. The President serves a term of five years, which may be renewed.

That’s probably why, when attempting to address some 200 hundred staffers of the World Bank, he was interupted with the chant “Resign. . . . “”Resign. . . . Resign.”

  106. Madame Defarge says:

    Also from Wiki:

In January 30, 2007 the pictures of Paul Wolfowitz’s socks after his visit to Selimiye Mosque in Turkey released. BBC criticized the influence the World Bank President can make over the poverty as he cannot afford a pair socks without holes. Today’s Zaman also announced that The Turkish Hosiery Manufacturers’ Association sent 12 pairs of socks after the incident.

  107. ObviousToMe says:

Remember the rocket launcher incident at the beginning of the Iraq war? The one that almost got Wolfowitz. He looked very spooked about at the time.

After all this person has done to screw up the world as we know it, it’s too bad that rocket launcher hidden inside of a generator didn’t hit the floor of the building he was on and take him out.

    He deserved it!

  109. John Gilpins says:

The girlfriend’s salary does seem a bit high.

Her salary may be a bit high but I’ll tell you a guy’s salary that’s a bit low. More than a bit low.

This guy’s name is: George W. Bush.

George W. Bush’s 2006 salary was published the other day: $642,000. Yeah, that’s a good salary but something isn’t adding up.

    Let’s do a little math.

Let’s start with the Texas Rangers. Bush invested $600,000 in 1989 and cashed out in 1998 for $15,000,000. Thats a nice big profit of $14,400,000. Yeah, he was probably stuck with a big tax bill but surely he netted $10,000,000.

Remember, this sale was in 1998.

I assume the $10,000,000 nest egg has grown considerably over the years. If it hasn’t, this fact alone points to his incompetency.

Remember, too, that the Texas Rangers’ sale is only one financial deal in the financial life of George W. Bush. Don’t you think Bush has had other financial deals? I would think so. Maybe not $15,000,000 deals but a $1,000,000 deal here, and a $3,000,000 deal there, and a $200,000 deal here, and a $700,000 deal there.

Many Certificates of Deposit, in 2006, were paying more than 5% yields. Considerably more. Just consider the $15,000,000 sale. Okay, an after-tax-profit of say $10,000,000 times 5.5% is $550,000.

Bush’s presidential salary is around $400,000.

Okay, $550,000 plus $400,000 equals $950,000. George W. Bush’s salary, in 2006, is $642,000. A good CPA should look into this.

The projected $950,000 salary is on the conservative side. Very conservative! In reality, Bush’s annual salary should easily be over $1,000,000–$1,400,000 range. Maybe more! Remember, he’s had other business deals.

Apparently, George W. Bush is incompetent running his personal financial portfolio. Surprise! Surprise! Yeah, his $642,000 income is a nice chunk of change, but it should be more. Everything spells mismanagement. Surprise! Surprise!

    John

Shorter White House statement on the amorous World Bank president: “Heckuva job, Wolfie!” Right. Love is a beautiful thing. Why shouldn’t a guy be allowed to install his girlfriend at the State Department and direct that she be paid more than the Secretary of State? What’s wrong with that?

You know what I don’t get? I don’t get why these trolls support these high-rolling hypocrites.

No way are the trolls making enough money to benefit from the tax breaks for the rich.

They’ll be just as screwed as the rest of us if things go even more horribly wrong than they have already.

People like Wolfowitz, Cheney & Bush wouldn’t piss on these trolls if they were on fire.

People like Wolfowitz, Cheney & Bush don’t care about the traditional morals and values of conservatives and christians.

They get nothing for supporting this administration — except the delusion that they’re “right.”

    I really don’t get it….

  114. Madame Defarge says:

I wonder how the US appointee to the position of President of the World Bank jibes with “bringing dignity and honor to the White House” for George Bush.

Wolfowitz is a married man (he and his wife are separated, not divorced) who has demanded preferential treatment and pay raises for his mistress.

    ACC-NO: A2005092535-E90C-GNW

    LENGTH: 119 words

    HEADLINE: WOLFOWITZ MARRIES IN ABSENTIA

    BODY:

WASHINGTON, Sept. 25. World Bank President Mr Paul Wolfowitz recently married in absentia – his colleague Shaha Riza – whom he had been dating since long. When Mr Wolfowitz met civil society organisations head, Ms Aruna Rao, founder-director of Gender at Work and board chair of Civicus (World alliance for civilian participation), she began the conversation saying to Mr Wolfowitz: I understand congratulations are in order for your recent marriage this afternoon. Mr Wolfowitz responded: Thank you. Mr Wolfowitz added: I didnt attend. Ms Rao exclaimed: You didnt? Mr Wolfowitz said: It was an in absentia wedding.

The only indication came in In the Loop column of The Washington Post daily on 23 September. PTI

Maybe he got a divorce from Wife #1 by Blackberry, and had it approved by Gonzo and the Supremes retroactively, though.

See. It’s all perfectly legal when you’re a loyal Bushie…

Theres no use in constantly rehashing that for a decade Jake. I don’t see you angry over Newts affair while he was married. Stop thinking in groupt think. Your a man of God and you know as well as I that the day will come that he will be judged…so will Newt, you and me.

Hate the sin Jake not the sinner.

  121. Zep Tepi says:

At least Wolfowitz pays good. Comment by Jake

That’s some odd rational you have there Jake. The more the ‘Ho’ gets paid the more righteous the sin.

For the record, I don’t think what Bill did was right. But men are weak when it comes listening to the brain in their penis. I see it all the time.

He did what he did and he paid the price for it. His wife obviously forgave him for his affair(s). And that is really all that matters in the end. It’s been a decade Jake, let it go. It cannot be and is not an excuse for everything these politicians do today.

  122. Zep Tepi says:

So if a ‘ho’ is paid well that makes it more righteous Jake? So then Bills only mistake was not giving her lavish raises?

That’s some mighty irrational rational you seem to be using.

  123. unbelievable says:

“Monica was an intern in his employ, and what was she paid! ”

Same range as all the other interns. Clinton didn’t demand anyone give her a higher salary because he was hiding the affair.

You really should look crap up before you spew it.

    “At least Wolfowitz pays good.
