BREAKING: Gonzales testimony postponed.»

AP reports:

The Senate Judiciary Committee postponed Tuesday’s questioning of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on the firings of eight federal prosecutors, saying the proceedings would be inappropriate in light of the Virginia Tech shootings.

Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy made the decision Monday to postpone the long-awaited hearing that has been considered Gonzales’ last chance to quiet a controversy that has prompted calls in both parties for his resignation.

Leahy said the hearing had been rescheduled for Thursday. He said he made the decision after conferring with Gonzales and the committee’s senior Republican, Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania. ”All three of us agree,” he said.

”I’m sure that he will want to be dealing with the matters of the shooting,” Leahy said of Gonzales.

    That’s what I predicted below.

  3. whiteyfresh Says:

and this gives the AG 2 MORE WHOLE DAYS to get those documents for the committee….

  4. Crump's Brother Says:

this is a good call guys. This Va Tech thing needs to be addressed. We will get to the testimony soon enough.

  5. whiteyfresh Says:

    Same shit, different day.

  7. whiteyfresh Says:

one thing I don’t get:”I’m sure that he will want to be dealing with the matters of the shooting,” Leahy said of Gonzales.

??? what, give the AG some time to figure out a way to pin this tragedy on the Democrats?

  8. Zooey Says:

I wonder how much time Gonzo’s actually going to spend on the VA Tech shootings.

  9. Jake Says:

I was actually hoping the Dems forced him to attend rather than take care of Virginia Tech issues — the hearing would have been flooded over by news coverage tomorrow — which is why I think Leaky Leahy wanted to postpone his SHOW TRIAL to make sure nothing else was competing for the lede headlines.

  10. whiteyfresh Says:

isn’t this a matter for local law enforcement???I just don’t get what part the AG plays in dealing with this???

  11. GSD Says:

Gonzo has two more days to try to cram, but he’s already exhausted. he’s got two more days to worry and wonder.

    It’s all over Alberto.

Let’s see, in the continuing media sensationalism cycle

Next Week: It’ll be something else.

These are the equivilant of freak weather news: while interesting individually, in the grand scheme of things THEY MEAN NOTHING and are indicative of no trend or evolution whatsoever.

    Distractions.

God, I’m so sick of this country.

    4. Authorizing Illegal NSA Domestic Surveillance
    5. Enabling John Yoo and Unchecked Presidential War Powers

  14. hellinabucket Says:

Like him or not, this is the sort of thing that the AG should be attending to now. It won’t change any of the past and that’s what will be raked over on Thursday.

For now, I would like to know the AG is addressing the tragedy in Virginia.

  15. chadwick Says:

”I’m sure that he will want to be dealing with the matters of the shooting,” Leahy said of Gonzales.

Murder, even multiple murder, is not a federal crime. Gonzales, nor the federal law enforcement system, have nothing to do with this.

  16. ccokz Says:

Super. Finally I get why this massacre happened

  17. dejavu Says:

what specifically is the AG going to do to address the mass killing in VA?

  18. Crump's Brother Says:

    Jake,

You said “I have no problem with legitimate oversight”

Maybe you could define that phrase for me. I think looking into statements made by the Attorney General, which could be perjurous in nature, is completely legitimate. Yet you keep calling it a “Show Trial.”

Could you make your position clearer?

  19. ValiantVenusGrewFromUranus Says:

You are a sick, sick individual, you disturbed little piece of sh*t.

  20. lestatdelc Says:

Not only is the postponement appropriate, but even from a crass political/media angle, a smart move. It will be wall-to-wall VA-Tech shooting and “guns” in the media for the next day or two. Better to give it 3 days to play out some before the Thursday AG self-immolation occurs.

  21. hellinabucket Says:

Jake, maybe the delay is for the deaths and not a need for headlines.

chadwick, this isn’t something the AG would address?

  22. Jake Says:

LOL — call back the FBI and ATF folks then!!!

  23. Zooey Says:

don’t be upset Zooey. see my above post!
    Comment by whiteyfresh

    Oh well…..all better now.

Gonzo better show his stupid face in VA at some point in the next two days. That’s what I’m saying.

So Jake, did you have a good wekend (depsite being an un-American anti-Christian)…?

  25. Jake Says:

    Crump’s Brother:

I thought I did so in the other thread.

    lestatdelc:

For even considering the crass political angle, I think you are about to be called “a sick, sick individual, you disturbed little piece of sh*t.” Or, maybe not.

  26. hellinabucket Says:

Why would the AG be involved in this? Chadwick’s got me thinking. As terrible as it is it’s not a federal crime so what brings the AG into this.

  27. Spudge_Boy Says:

If anybody thinks that Gonzo will be working on the VA Tech shootings anytime in the next two days, I have a bridge I am trying to sell.

  29. guy2k Says:

The disgustingly permissive gun laws are part of DoJ’s purview–not saying Gonzo is going to address the problem, but he should.

Automatic weapons are not vital to individuals’ everyday survival–when the F*CK are we going to wake up?

  30. Jake Says:

Other than that, my weekend was fine, lestatdelc — how about yours?

  31. Raven Says:

Agreed, and it will be interesting to see what Gonzo does with an event such as the Virginia Tech tragedy.
Leahy’s parting remark sounds like he was pointing Alberto in the direction of his job description….

  32. Fools on the Hill Says:

Is Gonzales head of the FBI now? The DOJ doesn’t really get involved until someone gets arrested. At least one of the shooters is dead.

Perhaps the delay is for DOJ to turn over the documents from Conyer’s subpeona, which they failed to do so far.

  33. Shane Says:

What’s this, another staged act of terrorism so the Bush administration accomplishes another goal.

  34. Robert Says:

If I understand correctly, the hard drives where those e-mail messages were written may still have remnants - if not all - of the emails that were “deleted.” Also, China was able to force several internet providers to turn over all kinds of confidential on line information to use in repression of its citizens. Why is there no discussion of anyone issuing subpoenas for the hard drives and internet service providers for the RNC to see what might be left instead of believeing the RNC and “Justice” department “deleted” the 5 million emails that in part may address what Gonzales had to say as a witness?

  35. And You Thought REAGAN Was Stupid Says:

Good. The longer this stays in the news, the bigger the corrupt incompetent fool Gonzo is shown to be. (pretend I wrote that in English)

    Jake,

    you did no such thing.

You have made it clear that you feel the Congress has no authority to put conditions on funding (which was your attempt to change the subject), but you have yet to explain why questioning Gonzalez is not legitimate oversight. Or why it constitutes a “Show Trial”

  39. Jake Says:

  43. Jake Says:

So, should Gonzales go to Virginia Tech? Damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t. LOL

Here’s another one (the Wikipedia link does come across, sorry):

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is a United States federal agency; more specifically a specialized law enforcement and regulatory organization within the United States Department of JUSTICE. Its official abbreviation is “ATF”, however it is frequently also referred to as “BATF” or “BATFE”. Its responsibilities include the investigation and prevention of federal offenses involving the unlawful use, manufacture, and possession of firearms and explosives, acts of arson and bombings, and illegal trafficking of alcohol and tobacco products. The ATF also regulates via licensing, the sales, possession, and transportation of firearms, ammunition, and explosives in interstate commerce. Many of ATF’s activities are carried out in conjunction with task forces made up of state and local law enforcement officers, such as Project Safe Neighborhoods. ATF operates a one-of-a-kind fire research laboratory in Ammendale, Maryland, where full-scale mock-ups of criminal arsons can be reconstructed.

  44. whiteyfresh Says:

Gotta run!(me leaving has nothing to do with Yenta’s comment, btw). It’s time to get off work, and I got a man coming to talk about windows…
    PEACE!

  45. veritas Says:

Of course, this is tragic and good reason to postpone things out of consideration for the families of the victims. Other than that, it gives the public much more time to begin connecting the dots of Gonzo’s lies….and what now has surfaced as evidence of such from his own ranks. Sampson’s already thrown him under the bus and in his testimony and now one of the attendees at this Nov. 27 meeting Gonzo attended testified that Gonzo not only approved the paperwork with the names but was in full discussion and awareness of it….bye, bye Gonzo!

  46. whiteyfresh Says:

    back on later though…

  47. Jake Says:

    Crump’s Brother:

If Congress is conducting these hearings to give aid and comfort to the enemy during wartime, that’s indeed treason. Consider it a hypothetical scenario for now, if that helps you wrap your mind around it.

  48. veritas Says:

#35 There have been subpoenas of those hard drives owned by the RNC et al. And, as everyone knows, with servers connected to servers, those emails are still out there in cyberspace and can definitely be retrieved. Karl Rove and his band of nazis had better be afraid, very afraid. These emails WILL come back and bite them on their fat asses.

You are ducking like crazy here.

Do you think that these hearings constitute “aid and comfort to the enemy during wartime” or not.

You know what these hearing are about. You are ready to call Spector a traitor over them. So take your stand. Do these hearings, which have nothing to do with war, consitutue a traitorous act to you?

    Comment by Jake — April 16, 2007 @ 5:56 pm

“Consider it a hypothetical scenario for NOW”? What is your evidence that Congress is conducting these hearings “to give aid and comfort to the enemy during wartime”?

I’ll agree that if that were the case, it would be treason. But what leads you to that conclusion? There must be something that someone said that was overtly sympathetic to terrorists, right? Since they’re the enemy?

  55. Jake Says:

Yes — I am willing to wait until Thursday to see if they follow through with their threatened treason to formally indict said Senators though.

Why would you leap to that unfounbded conclusion Jake? I prefaced my statement pointing out the political/media angle by saying that it was wholly appropriate to postpone for legitimate reasons given the circumstances, beyond the secondary the political/media ones. I am able to look at more than levels or aspects to something.

We’ll have an easier time getting Rove to admit he pulls the heads off of small animals than getting Congress to turn on itself and admit their motives are aimed at aiding and comforting the enemy. That’s what it would boil down to Jake.

You didn’t think that one thru did you son..

  62. Crump's Brother Says:

    Jake,

Name one congressperson or senator, who you think is actively trying to give aid or comfort to our enemies. It seems to be what you keep coming back to.

I find it disturbing that you feel “legitmate oversight” would constitute giving aid to our enemies.

I also find it pathetic that you feel that the Congress passing a budget with a ending date to the war is giving aid to our enemies. God forbid we disagree, but just because we disagree, does meant we are giving aid to our enemies. And for you to say so, makes you sound eerily familiar with the religious nut jobs we are apparently at war with. You are either with them, or against them right Jake?

  63. Zooey Says:

We need to just ignore Rape Joker Jake.

He has monopolized every thread I’ve looked at today.

    Comment by Jake — April 16, 2007 @ 6:10 pm

Jake, I’m trying to get a straight answer from you on two threads about this.

Your claim of treason rests on the condition that this investigation is done “to aid and comfort the enemy”. Without that condition of aid and comfort, you don’t have treason. Agreed?

Now, WHAT leads you to the judgment that Congress is pursuing this investigation IN ORDER TO PROVIDE AID AND COMFORT TO THE ENEMY?

When answering, keep in mind that the last part of that question is the key issue to be addressed.

  74. Zep Tepi Says:

  97. lestatdelc Says:

    #81 Comment by Jake — April 16, 2007 @ 6:23 pm

You are just being ridiculous Jake. You and I both know that no such type of questioning of the AG has, or ever will occur. However the AG will be questioned, under oath before the Senate on Thursday, and that is a good thing. I know that is hard for you to accept Jake, but Congressional oversight is a good thing, not a bad thing. Just because it damages Bush and the current AG (and the political party of same) doesn’t mean it gives aid or comfort to the enemies. The fact that al Qaeda sees the invasion of Iraq and the stupidity of what Bush has done as the best thing for such extremist groups should be a pretty clear indication that it is the opposite of what you ridiculously insinuate (without anything resembling reality I might add).

Let me put it a way that most GOPers and fake “independents” like yourself can grasp:

Strong Bush = good for terrorists

Weak Bush/strong Democratic Congress = bad for terrorists.

    That clear enough?

Worst thing in the world for terrorists would be for the Democrats to take the White House and to increase their control and margin in Congress.

  98. Crump's Brother Says:

    Jake,

Why did you bring up aid to our enemies, if you didn’t think it was happening with the hearing.

Of course anyone giving aid and comfort to the enemy would be liable under traitor laws. But has that EVER happened as a result of of a Senate hearing?

Nice deflection from the fact that you put ideology ove country. That’s what this whole thing is about. Spector says he wants answers, you call him a traitor, and we asked you why. You quickly decided to backtrack, because you know you had been caught showing your ideological fangs, and were embarassed.

There is no giving aid to the enemy by asking the Attorney General to straighten this situation out. But you are ready to have Arlen Spector convicted of a crime that carries the penalty of death because you don’t like the line of questioning. And you know that is un-American. You likened a duly elected senator to a traitor. You accused him of giving aid to our enemies, simply because he wants to know why Gonzalez’s statements don’t add up.

Hellinabucket, the only way this could be federalized is if it were branded as a hate crime. Short of that, or another such permutation (crossing state lines, etc) this would never ever be prosecuted at the federal level. This is a case for the WV Attorney General and/or local law enforcement.
