The two-page letter to President Bush and Attorney General Gonzales comes from the American Freedom Agenda, “a recently formed body designed to promote conservative legal principles”:
“Mr. Gonzales has presided over an unprecedented crippling of the Constitution’s time-honored checks and balances,” it declares. “He has brought rule of law into disrepute, and debased honesty as the coin of the realm.” Alluding to ongoing scandal, it notes: “He has engendered the suspicion that partisan politics trumps evenhanded law enforcement in the Department of Justice.”
The letter concludes by saying, “Attorney General Gonzales has proven an unsuitable steward of the law and should resign for the good of the country… The President should accept the resignation, and set a standard to which the wise and honest might repair in nominating a successor…”

For the American Freedom Agenda letter and all the latest news, document dumps, email archives, hearing transcripts and other essential materials in the firings of U.S. attorneys, see:

Key words: “wise and honest”. Ummmmm, anyone, anyone? Beuller?
April 16th, 2007 at 12:17 pm“Recently formed”, huh? Kinda like the Swift Boat Vets group — no way that Bush should accept the resignation — the blood-thirsty Dems won’t ever confirm another AG who actually wants to fight the war on terrorists.
April 16th, 2007 at 12:17 pmI just love it when the Conservatives begin eating their own. ;-)
April 16th, 2007 at 12:18 pmBruce Fein and Bob Barr are traitors.

That doesn’t sound like a conservative group — unless you’re talking about real conservatives, not the fake kind that populate the Republican party (and a certain number of “registered independents”) today.
April 16th, 2007 at 12:20 pmi’ve offered a few more thoughts
on this matter here, and
again — i trust groups like these about
as far as i can throw ‘em — but i think
about this one — they are clearly right.
i must say, it is deeply unfortunate that
while firedoglake, thinkprogress, talkingpoints and
talkleft, among many others, have been offering
these sorts of wise, majestic, principled, ideas
for a very long while — it takes an eve-of-des-
truction-moment to bring these supposedly-true-
patriots forward — here, now, finally
pointing back to our long-espoused-traditions
of ordered liberty, and a nation governed by
the rule of law (not men), that until now,
were uninterrupted for some 220 years. . .
“but i will take help — from whatever
quarter it is offered“, here — as this is
a moment of truly historic significance. . .
and i think they finally sense it, too.
alberto must go. go now. and “let the
wise and honest repair, to nominate his
successor” — one patrick fitzgerald(?). . .
nah, he’s too smart to want the job. . .
but i can dream. . .
April 16th, 2007 at 12:21 pmFeeling a little ’squeezed’, Alberto?
As you learned in grade school, the more lies you tell, the more lies you have to remember.
You can blame this on a bad memory, but if you hadn’t lied, you wouldn’t have to remember the lies.
That’s not a bad memory, Al, it’s call LYING!

Another game of Republicans Eating There Own….
April 16th, 2007 at 12:24 pmWe heard you the first time, nolo contendere.
April 16th, 2007 at 12:26 pmgonzo needs to be impeached - not just a resignation…
he should be banned from even “practicing” law, every where, forever…
but he needs to go ASAP - so that the DEMOCRATIC Congress can confirm an AG that actually wants to fight the “war on terror”… and not justpave the way for a fascist regime…
April 16th, 2007 at 12:26 pmAh, what a pleasure to see the foot stomping and harrumphing of the childlike trolls.
Remember when every argument they had ended with–”Everyone supports us, so there!”
Now they are tilting at windmills and screaming “traitor” to a larger and larger percentage of America. Somewhere around 60% to 70%.
For God’s sake, Bush has lost Lee Iacocca and Donald Trump.
I hope that you’ll be able to man the barricades with Bill Kristol and Ann Coulter and Dick Cheney and Barney and Pickles.

April 16th, 2007 at 12:26 pmLet’s see, they hate us for the freedoms that we enjoy, so let’s give up those freedoms so that we can fight them … and become just like them
Be careful when you fight the monsters, lest you become one.
April 16th, 2007 at 12:27 pmFrederick Nietzche
Jake,
Why does it seem that you are more about Party before country? At some point the President has to cut bait with guys like this. He’s not qualitfied, and his refusal to step down is keeping this thing in the news.
Should a fun show tomorrow in front of the Judiciary Committee.
April 16th, 2007 at 12:27 pmThese are some of the more clear thinking Republicans who see that Gonzo is killing the Pubs. I say let Gonzo stay and do his little bit to bring the party down.
April 16th, 2007 at 12:28 pmFor the RECORD,
When Gonzo RESIGNS, it will be EASY for Bush to get another Attorney General confirmed.
Simply offer someone WHO HAS A TRACK RECORD, and is WILLING TO TAKE QUESTIONS ON THEIR POLITICAL VIEWS, and….
Acts as the TOP law-enforcement agent in the country FOR the USA, NOT for Bush as his PERSONAL ATTORNEY.
With these criteria, NO PROBLEM for Senate confirmation. What Bush doesn’t want is an “attorney” who he can’t use POLITICALLY.
The way he uses the TROOPS, both DEAD AND ALIVE, politically.
See you in hell “jake” guckert/gannon (cause I’LL be THERE),

thanks.
April 16th, 2007 at 12:31 pmP.S. I am registered Independent. Nonetheless, I place country over that party — family over country — God above all.
April 16th, 2007 at 12:32 pmI think there are a lot of fears that have been keeping Bush up late at night the past few months. One of the big ‘uns is how to run the country without his lickspittle Alberto willing to bark that everything the President does is above board and in compliance with the quaint ol’ Constitution. For ANYONE else to have to take this gig now, he or she would look even more like the weak and craven power effer he or she would have to be to be willing to confirm all the lies of this Administration as Constitutional.
Which is why Alberto will pretty much have to be forcibly removed by criminal charges before Bush lets him go. Of course, then, Bush will claim that anything the AG feels he has to do to protect the amuhrcan peoples (which includes lying to the amuhrcan peoples about anything the prezdent’s doing is Constitutional) is legal, which is convenient, and would hopefully be the final nail in the impeachment coffin, something even the most diehard Bushies realize is unaccapetable if they ever hope to keep their seats of power.
Fingers crossed, kids.
April 16th, 2007 at 12:32 pmjake — you should know that

Does “Bruce Fein and Bob Barr are traitors” ring a bell?
April 16th, 2007 at 12:41 pmAs long as AG Gonzales holds up tomorrow, he won’t be going anywhere (he knows where Bush’s bodies are buried ; )
Even I know that. Iraq, and Arlington National Cemetery.
Gonzales, of course, was only following orders. Not that he should get off scot free, but maybe this group should also be demanding the resignation or impeachment of the person who gave him those orders.
April 16th, 2007 at 12:42 pmMaking Gonzales resign will fix nothing nor would it a be any kind of punishment for what has been going on here. Gonzales is only an appendage of this rotten, criminal administration. It is not like he is ever acting alone without instructions. I think that the whole administration needs to be held accountable for what they have done to this country. Here are a couple of good articles.
April 16th, 2007 at 12:50 pm“Meltdown at the Department of Justice” by Scott Horton http://harpers.org/ archive/ 2007/ 04/ horton-justice-meltdown

What do you want to bet that AG Gonzales is a no show tomorrow at the Senate hearings? I can hear it now, “he suddenly took ill”, “he couldn’t find the Capital”, “he didn’t remember the hearing”, or if all else fails, “Clinton did it”.

April 16th, 2007 at 1:21 pmYes, he did Bob (not the hacker). But TP jumped on it and deleted all posts with that profiler’s comments in them, his and ours. Good thing.
The old fart is doing nothing but digging his own grave deeper and deeper now. I don’t think anyone is listening to him anymore.
April 16th, 2007 at 1:32 pmThe letter concludes by saying, “Attorney General Gonzales has proven an unsuitable steward of the law and should resign for the good of the country… The President should accept the resignation, and set a standard to which the wise and honest might repair in nominating a successor
Ridiculous. They are asking a man who has absolutely no respect for the rule of law (or Constitution) to “set a standard.” Seems like this entire debacle is exactly the result of the standard Bush set. Gonzales should resign…and so should the entire Bush Administration.
April 16th, 2007 at 1:36 pmI guess these Rethugs really don’t want to see Gonzales make a total idiot of himself and commit perjury. They’re hoping against hope that Bush fires the fraud before he can perjure himself tomorrow.
April 16th, 2007 at 1:39 pmGonzales is the most impotent AG we’ve ever had in the history of this country. He’s installed pure filth into our judicial system and he needs to be removed so the citizens don’t storm the Bastille.
April 16th, 2007 at 1:40 pmGonzo needs a thorough excoriation tomorrow before his sorry ass is thrown on the funeral pyre of this administration.
April 16th, 2007 at 1:41 pmFor Truth,
Hmmm, food for thought. Maybe we do need another Bastille Day to get it through the Republican’ts head that we are sick and tired of them ruining what used to be the best country in the world.
April 16th, 2007 at 1:53 pmFor the record, I’m beginning to suspect that Karl Rove was behind Imus and now this shooting at Virginia Tech. God forbid what has to happen tomorrow to get the AG’s testimony off the front pages.

When the Office of the President intentionally obstructs justice and corrupts his own Department of Justice, the only hope the people have left is the Legislative Arm of this Democracy, aka Congress. It’s now up to Congress to take the appropriate measures to ensure the safety of this democracy from the “enemy within” who have attempted to overthrow it entirely. And these twisted neocon nazis almost accomplished it - that is, but for the “midterms” which intervened and told them unequivocally that the people were sick and tired of the corruption within this administration. If the people had been lulled into complacency before the midterms (when the DOJ was attempting to squelch all the “bad news” for the indicted Republicans, they would have accomplished the dissolution of this american democracy.
Their legacy will, undoubtedly, be “if only….if only…if only….” I suspect they will all be sining it together like the demented frat brothers (and sisters) whom they are sitting in prison wearing orange jumpsuits someday soon.
April 16th, 2007 at 3:06 pmAs for tomorrow, pop the popcorn because it will certainly resemble “The Laurel & Hardy Show”. Actually, Bush resembles Stan Laurel and Gonzo resembles Oliver Hardy….haha!
April 16th, 2007 at 3:08 pmIt’s time for “Shrub’s Law” to end! Tomorrow Gonzo will seal his fate and go down in history as “the worst Attorney General who was the puppet of the worst President Ever in the History of this Country”.
April 16th, 2007 at 3:09 pmWhen I look at Alberto Gonzales, it’s becoming clear to me that his vacuous eyes and deer-in-the-headlights expression, coupled with his cheating, cold heart is illustrative of one with a very limited IQ.
April 16th, 2007 at 3:11 pmIf the Republicans want to remain a viable party in the future , they are best served by doing a good hatchet job on the neo conservatives in the bush administration before the next election !
