Giuliani to conservatives: ‘get beyond’ abortion.

Rudy Giuliani “made his sharpest case for moving beyond social issues this weekend in Iowa.” Asked about abortion, he said that conservatives have “to get beyond issues like that.”

  2. Crump's Brother says:

He’s done. If only he could flip flop on the issue like Romney has done.

  3. McCrazy says:

I agree, those opposing abortions just need to keep their opinions to themselves. Get over it, let people make their own decisions in life, and deal with any consequences, you know like a FREE person.

  4. Jake says:

Yeah, I wouldn’t vote for Rudy Giuliani either way.

  5. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

Oh, oh, there goes any chance of the right wing fundamentalist Christian vote, although there was only slim chance of that in the first place.

  6. Jake says:

    McCrazy:

Good thing here in California we didn’t let Scott Peterson “make his own decision” about defenseless Connor . . .

  7. Zimzone says:

    Rudy’s campaign aborted?

Yeah. I don’t think Guiliani fully understands the magnitude of how much conservatives are for or against certain issues like abortion.

Hell, about 50 million evangelicals won’t vote for him just because he’s been divorced a couple times. Saying abortion is a silly little issue isn’t going to gain you republican supporters there Rudy.

  9. Proud Dem says:

“Our party is going to grow, and we are going to win in 2008 if we are a party characterized by what we’re for, not if we’re a party that’s known for what we’re against.”

Translation: For the war, against civil liberties.

And Jake, Scott Peterson MURDERED his wife and unborn child, it was not abortion. SULOGA!

  10. hellinabucket says:

Any bets on how long Guiliani stays relevent? Or is this the dismantling of the republican party? You decide.

  11. Parrotlover77 says:

I wonder when the vast majority of the fundies are going to realize they have been taken for a ride the last 20/30 years by some really slick snake oil salesmen?

    comedy gold.

  14. DataShade says:

I don’t think this is going to kill Rudy. First, it’s actually a populist statement; most people are willing to accept, or at least tolerate/ignore, abortion.

Second, and I forget which blog I read this on, but Rudy’s disgusting behavior with his ex wives and family shows he uses the kind of “firm hand” the lizard-brain respects – not to mention, it’s obvious he’s a chauvinist pig.

Rudy is banking that he can campaign as Tough-Love Daddy rather than any kind of “real” conservative.

  15. SuperEdo says:

I wish conservatives could get beyond the issue of abortion. I have friends who will not support the Democrats under any condition because they are generally pro-choice. And they continue to support Republicans no matter how many immoral acts come from that party.

Unfortunately, it’s not going to happen. It’s baby-killing to them, and it’s apparently OK to kill tens of thousands of Iraqis if we can save some unborn babies.

  16. Anonymous By Choice says:

    Go beyond GODS LAW?

That will never, ever, happen for them. It’s asking them to go against their religion, is he nuts?

  17. Parrotlover77 says:

I’m not sure pandering so hard to the middle-road and left wingers is the right approach for him. Moderate is a good idea because America is sick of ultra-right-wing right now, but if he crosses the line too far, he’ll lose his “base” and the Dem will surely win since the left is so motivated to vote right now. I guess what I’m saying is being pro-choice is not necessarily a bad position for him politically, but to speak out so hard against it instead of appealing to both sides by saying “I’m pro-choice, but I respect my pro-life colleagues” just seems unwise. It’s like he’s flipping his middle finger to his base while desperately trying to appeal to a crowd that is not too excited about him in the first place.

  18. whiteyfresh says:

Yeah, I wouldn’t vote for Rudy Giuliani either way.

I personally don’t like Guilliani because he makes Bush look like Clinton when it comes to invasion of privacy and reducing civil liberties…:)

  19. McCrazy says:

    Jake,

It’s really too bad your mom didn’t try birth control, or an abortion.

  20. Jake says:

    McCrazy:

I’m sure you and Scott Peterson believe in post-birth abortion too . . .

  21. Zippi says:

Zillions of Fepublicans all over America are saying, “How refreshing,
finally a candidater standing up to the wingnuts.” This will not hurt
Giuliani very much at all. He has more spine than all the Dems combined.

  22. Jake says:

I guess neither of us will be voting for Rudy, then, whiteyfresh.

  23. WaltTheMan says:

I don’t think that Rudy will get the Conservative or Republican nomination. He has a slight morals problem – he’s been in more bedrooms then Sealy and Serta combined.

  24. McCrazy says:

    Jake,

Yes in your case, you’re a worthless piece of garbage. I keep hoping you’ll insert that .45 in your mouth and pull the trigger. Be a man, take one for the team, sacrifice for your country, meet your maker, you know… have fun bitch.

  25. Rona Hona says:

Lot of mature people here ey?

  26. Proud Dem says:

    #24 – Good one, Walt.

  27. Bob says:

Are there any ‘take the Bible literally’ people out there (fluent in Hebrew, ancient Greek, and other dead languages) that can tell me the book(s) and verse(s) declaring “abortion” murder?

I’ve read the one about a man murdering a pregnant woman also murders the unborn child, but I’m curious to read where it specifically talks about abortion.

Anyone read Ciderhouse Rules? That’s my take: God gave the knowledge to do abortions for the greater good.

  28. Julianna says:

    HAHAHAHAHAH!

How stupid is Rudy? Apparently he is dumb enough to think the religious right can “get beyond” abortion. What a dumbass.

  29. bye bye GOP says:

Rudy Guliani can’t win the liberal OR conservative women’s vote no matter what he says, and if he can’t get the women’s vote he won’t win. The man is a pig who treated his ex wife so viciously it makes the skin crawl.

  30. Bruce Gorton says:

You play to your base and then go for the middle. Right now, Guliani lost his base.

Basically he has just made the same mistake the Democrats keep on making – Assuming that the political poles are worthless and shifting to the centre too soon.

This means McCain as the Republican candidate in 2008.

  31. Bruce Gorton says:

    Bob

    Exodus 21:22-23

“If men who are fighting hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely but there is no serious injury [i.e., to the mother], the offender must be fined whatever the woman’s husband demands and the court allows. But if there is serious injury [i.e., to the mother], you are to take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot…”

So the verse isn’t there, because the Bible doesn’t define a fetus as being a person yet.

  32. rudy says:

    Jake
When I was kid, I used to pinch the heads of baby birds off, when I’d find them in a nest, too bad you weren’t around then,I would have saved your relatives the pain of watching you grow into a babbling buffoon!

  33. Bob says:

    Thanks Bruce.

That’s actually the verse to which I was refering: I am hoping for more. I’ve been looking. Seems to me (if that is the only verse) to be a very obscure reference to something that that group just goes balistic over. The question that arises in my mind is why aren’t they so hostile over poverty (or being compassionate) since that seems to be more of a central theme in the new testament.

It’s the same with the ’sin’ of homosexuallity: a lot of uproar over one obscure verse that doesn’t even specifically condemn homosexuallity.

  34. Pete Bogs says:

they’re stuck on abortion and gay marriage… even other consternos are saying that…

  35. big papa says:

    Comment by WaltTheMan #24

…and put twice as many more paramours to sleep…

…Rudy HAS to get past abortion…

    …he now only EATS eggs…

    …his fertilizerer sic don’t work no more…

  36. sweetgumroot says:

I’m with Zippi at #22. A lot of real republicans are fed-up with the Jesus-Freaks and are happy to see a candidate with balls say what he thinks.

The evangelicals vote in blocks advised by their leaders: Dobson, Robertson, et al. Any candidate can make a back room deal with the evangelical leaders for an endorsement and the followers will vote exactly as advised.

How Giuliani can do that given this position I don’t know, but anythings possible with these Christian lobbyists.

  37. Harry L says:

Previous Repub candidates have had to walk a fine line of being against abortion, but not really doing anything to make it illegal in order to get elected. Giuliani will have an easier time getting elected in a national election than an anti abortion candidate. The majority of the country is pro choice.
