Cole On Virginia Tech Shootings: ‘In Iraq, This Is A Daily Event’

The profoundly tragic events at Virginia Tech yesterday have produced sorrow and grief across the country. While this massacre deserves the nation’s attention, it is also worth noting that such grief rips apart Iraqi lives nearly every day in the same manner.

University of Michigan Professor Juan Cole pointed out last night on PBS’s Newshour:

Remember that we’re all concerned, as we should be, about these events at Virginia Tech today. In Iraq this is a daily event. Imagine how horrible it would be if this kind of massacre were occurring every single day. And the people of Iraq feel that either the Americans are not stopping it or they’re actually causing it.

Watch it:

Echoing Cole, Iraq Slogger published a post today recounting the brutal scenes of violence that Iraq’s universities have witnessed in recent months:

On Monday, the same day as the Virginia Tech mass shooting, two separate shooting incidents struck Mosul University, one killing Dr. Talal Younis al-Jelili, the dean of the college of Political Science as he walked through the university gate, and another killing Dr. Jaafar Hassan Sadeq, a professor from the Faculty of Arts at the school, who was targeted in front of his home in the al-Kifaat area, according to Aswat al-Iraq.

In January, Baghdad’s Mustansiriya University sufferred a double suicide bombing in January that killed at least 70 people, including students, faculty, and staff. A month later, another suicide bomber struck at Mustansiriya, killing 40.

Kidnappings of students and faculty are another all-too-common occurrence on Iraq’s campuses. Members of the univerisity community have been abducted and murdered for sectarian reasons, or simply held for ransom. [...]

In January, students reported that violent events had threatened students that attendance rates at Baghdad University had dropped to six percent.

Earlier this month, the Dr. Qais Jawad al-Azzawi, head of the Geneva-based Committee International Committee of Solidarity with Iraqi Professors said that 232 university professors were killed and 56 were reported missing in Iraq, while more than 3,000 others had left the country after the 2003 invasion.

Digg It!

Unfortunately, this is correct. In Iraq right now, 33 dead qualifies as a good day.

  2. SKdeA Says:

A little too much reality for Americans to face...

  3. joe Says:

Why does Iraq have to be brought into everything. I'm ashamed.

People who don't realize why this specifically is a story just don't get it. The idea of something like this happening at a college campus, which is supposed to be a safe and open place of learning, is the story. Not the death itself.

While we're at it, who cares about people dying in Iraq, since it happens even MORE often in Africa, where children are dying of starvation and disease every ten seconds or so. We can play this game all day.

All deaths are tragic. Thus struck a chord because it attacked a cherished American institution, college, which is now tied to the American dream. Those who don't understand that are shortsighted.

  4. Captain Kirk Says:

your poor idiots on the extreme left.........incredible that you would compare what happened yesterday at Virginia Tech to what is going on in Iraq...

only the low lives, the pathetic, the stupid, moronic, useless, worthless, idiots of the extreme left use the Virginia Tech incident to take a political stab at the President and those on the right.

the extreme left wing pathetic low live human beings are but the vomits of the Devil.

    thinkprogress.org is disgusting and pathetic.

  5. marcus robinson Says:

Who cares about the people of Iraq, they attack us on 9/11 right?? Of course am kidding and this professor is dead on with his comment. We hate arabs so much thanks to Bush and company that we don't even see them as human. Therefore, it's okay if we kill their women and children.

  6. Captain Kirk Says:

if we are going to use comparisons more people die in Americas highways than they do in Iraq.

An American soldier has a greater chance of dying driving from his American home to his American military base than he/she does serving in Iraq.

More people die of heart attacks per year in America than Iraqis die per year since 2003.

leave it to the left wing extremist to politicize the Virginia Tech tragedy.

you people are beyond help and quite disgusting.

  7. joe Says:

    This*** not thus for #3

  8. ForTruth Says:

    Kirk,

This is not the extreme left. Go to PrisonPlanet for that.

Folks from the Neocon right have made center into extreme left. Reality and facts are extreme left to you.

So, again, what is the reason you keep posting here? If we are beyond your help, then what's the point?

  13. joe Says:

"if you don't like it then go away"

    =

-the idiot's solution to a debate he can't figure out how to win

It's very similar to the extremist right "America: Love it or Leave it" mentality.

TP- love it or leave it?

  14. whiteyfresh Says:

wow, CK,did your dildo break or something? that's even a little more vitriolic than usual for you...

  15. whiteyfresh Says:

joe and CK DO NOT want America to face the reality of Iraq. period. end of story.Anything that can done to show JUST HOW VIOLENT it is in Iraq scares them.Oh, and joe, I have had several good discussions with people that other dub 'trolls'. If you actually say something intelligent, you might get intelligent responses:)

  16. Captain Kirk Says:

Incredible that ANYONE, right or left would use this event for their political gain. Leave it to thinkprogress.org to put up the disgusting comments and bring up Iraq when such great tragedy strikes our great nations.

I wrote to the professor already....there is no comparison between Iraq and what happened yesterday you moronic fools, useful idiots, tools,, robots, parrots, mindless drones, can't think fools of the extreme left.

    stop trying to politicize this......

it was tragic what happened yesterday and Iraq and this can't be compared.

f........cking start thinking for yourselves you pathetic extreme left wing worms.

  17. marcus robinson Says:

This isn't a "Right or Left" issue. This is a human issue. All you have to do is listen to what the students were syaing. They were shocked that this happened on their campus but I wonder if they are shocked that it happens anywhere including Iraq. Am sure some of them are shocked but Iraqi college students see this everyday thanks to the Bush administration. And what was the of from the White House, "We believe in gun owrship".

  18. Vance Says:

Did I see Brian Williams of NBC last evening grilling a student from his limo? Maybe next he could interview an iraqi mother whos childs brains are still wet on her shirt. Sorry but the hipocracy im seeing on every news channel today is disgusting.

  19. chadwick Says:

Joe, that's the point, you middling mind. This happens on IRAQI campuses all too frequently. Because of the botched situation brought about by administration hubris and poorplanning, people, students, children, the are ROUTINELY gunned down, blown up, tortured, etc.

But Americans, sheltered in the coccoon of iPods and American Idol rarely feel the horror.

  20. Captain Kirk Says:

    Fortruth,

i post here just to let you know what a bunch of extreme left wing low live human beings you guys are.....

how can anyone take this and politicize it.....incredible, disgusting, and quite f....cked up. you have to be a true mindless tool to agree with anything said by this professor and not scold thinkprogress.org for posting this garbage.

so your argument is that the deaths of Americans are more important to you then the deaths of Iraqis, or Africans, correct?
    That to me is shortsighted.
By the way, if I remember correctly, students were killed at an Iraqi university some time ago, but was just a minute glib in the media.

  25. And You Thought REAGAN Was Stupid Says:

#16: You're right, Kirk. There is no comparison between Iraq and what happened yesterday. The tragedy in Iraq is wholly due to Bush and the Neocons' failed policies. VA Tech is a tragedy due to a deranged individual. Oh, and the Neocons' deranged policy has led to hundreds of thousands of deaths.

  26. DRxJ Says:

    from Nathaniel Blake:
Something is clearly wrong with the men in our culture. Among the first rules of manliness are fighting bad guys and protecting others: in a word, courage. And not a one of the healthy young fellows in the classrooms seems to have done that. …

    from Captain Kirkoff
    stop trying to politicize this……
f……..cking start thinking for yourselves you pathetic extreme left wing worms.
Leave it to thinkprogress.org to put up the disgusting comments

Man, it must suck to be a hypocrite, eh?

  31. bob (not the hacker) Says:

    re # 6

how many soldiers died over the weekend in car crashes here in the US? How many died in Iraq? You're a right wing apologist and propogandist. Nobody here is making light of what happened in Blacksburg VA here. Cole, and some posters here have only pointed out that the grief and shock that is being felt here over the VT shootings is an ongoing experience for citizens of Iraq, and it is our fault. The fact that you and your wingnut brethern can't feel compassion for people who don't look like you is why we're in this mess to beging with.

what's the matter left wing tools, robots, useful idiots of the left, as Lenin called his left wing followers, can't handlre the truth does you try to impersonate me? you cowards, you disgusting vile, hateful, full of venom things........

why don't you imbeciles go to Virginia Tech and tell them how what happened there is comparable to what is going on in Iraq and then let me know how many bullet holes you mindless tools come back with.

only the pathetic, worthless, extreme left would use this tragic, sad, horrific event in order to push their extreme, wacked out agenda.

with each response to me, you imbeciles show what a bunch of low lives and what a bunch of disgusting human beings each one of you is........

are you imbeciles, low lives so full of hate and so against Bush and the Iraq War that all you useful tools can do is bring up Iraq? you anti-Bush cult members, how sad for each one of you.

  33. joe Says:

#23 you idiot, there's a reason why that's just part of the sentence.

I care about anyone who dies, and I pointed out that every day, the human disaster in Africa is far worse than the one going on in Iraq. Not to say that Africa is more important than Iraq, but to show how your hypocritical arguments can be turned against you.

Not one person has responded to my point about Africa. Not one.

Iraq is a highly dangerous place and what's going on there is tragic and awful. But what makes this news is that it went on at a supposedly safe and innocent place. No one would ever assume anywhere in Iraq to be innocent and safe, not even a college.

    Comment by DRxJ — April 17, 2007 @ 4:17 pm

Incorrect. My argument is that this is considered a major story because it happened in an unexpected place.

I happen to do work for Oxfam and the situation in Africa is very dear to my heart. But no one human tragedy is 'more important to me' than any other.

Man, dude, I hope you do get laid in your lifetime. satisfying orgasms with a partner will do wonders for your anger
(by the way, your anger in typing matches the profile of the VT murderer....just saying)

  47. erock Says:

When I first started to read comments where people were tying this event to Iraq wrt the tragic loss of, I too was a bit disgusted. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that tying this to Iraq isn't really a politicization of a tragedy. In reality, its bringing close to home a series of tragedies that we set in motion years ago. I remember hearing about a university bombing in Iraq several weeks ago. At the time I thought nothing of it. The fact that the VT shootings have affected me so deeply while the university bombing in Iraq passed by without a notice makes me sick to my stomach. Maybe some of the ones who are being so defensive are the same ones that should take a good long look at their reaction to loss of l ife in general.

  52. Fed the Fcuk Up! Says:

    #32,
You are a great American and your speech brought me to tears. Fortunately, I just happen to have a box of the "Sheets of Babylon" tissues from Kleenex. Each sheet is embossed with the death certificate of Iraqis murdered by us Americans.

Don't worry, though, I still have 649,999 left.

  53. chadwick Says:

Useful idiot. Heh. That's a good one, Cappy. And I suppose your poor spelling, grammar, syntax and muddled thinking are indicative of your superior mind?

Note to self: writing like a moron means I'm actually brilliant.

Ergo: Bush is really a secret Einstein.

  54. Captain Kirk Says:

    B.Fly,

are you stupid or do you just play one. First of all if Bush did this, as I said, right or left this is not the time to politicize this.....read before you make a complete idiot out of yourself, but being a useful idiot, as Lenin called his left wing followers, I am sure you are used to making a complete idiot out of yourself.......

second of all, who was Bush's spokenman that came out to defend the 2nd amendment, as far as I have seen in all news it is the left wing anti-2nd amendment hate the Constitution morons the ones jumping on this incident to prove that guns are bad (as if guns had feelings).

only an useful idiot from the left would make such idiotic claims, you would fit right into Lenin's communist fools.

  55. joe Says:

    Sure you do, Joe.

    Comment by B.Fly — April 17, 2007 @ 4:30 pm

That was a really useful comment.

  56. n1K Says:

I had Juan Cole as a professor at the University of Michigan, and he was a very good teacher. One of the most knowledgable people there is on the Middle East. But for all the yelling and name calling done by Kirk (maybe a code of conduct for blogs is an appropriate topic), I thuoght the exact same thing that Mr. Cole, in that every day this is a daily event in Iraq, and that this huge tragedy for us, happens every day over there. People are people, no matter if they are American or Iraqi, or black or white (this is like Katrina) in that those that are "left" bloggers seem to feel more for those that are less fortunate, while the "right" bloggers see things in a black and white/good and bad sort of way. All, Juan is saying is step back and if you have been trumpetting this war, realize that people in Iraq go through this kind of thing everyday and Bush's administations policy is the cause of this. If killing and kidnappings and suicide bombs were going off in our campuses becasue Canada had invaded us for our betterment, trust me there would be a lot of people up in arms trying to get Canadians out. It forments hate for the person (country) that is supposed to be keeping security if they are unable.

Even though this is an American tragedy, there should be some in the "right" crowd that should take a step back and realize that this is how Iraqis feel every day, and that the plan the current administration has been employing is flawed and maybe its time to stop being cheerleaders and start thinking for yourself what our great invasion has wreaked on people in a distant land.

  57. Zooey Says:

only an useful idiot from the left would make such idiotic claims, you would fit right into Lenin’s communist fools.
    Comment by Captain Kirk

You're making some pretty idiotic claims yourself, Captain.

  58. joe Says:

Still, nobody has addressed my point, which, is, simply stated:

You all seem to argue that the SCOPE of the tragedy is what makes something important, which is why thinking about VTech instead of Iraq is wrong. So would it be right to say, the African human disaster is worse than the Iraqi human disaster, so we should only be worried about that, not Iraq?

    Both are logically flawed...

  59. Feeling Your Pain Says:

Captain Kirk, you are the person who can't handle the truth and it's obvious to everyone in the world but you. I suggest you seek counseling and specifically ask for some anti-psychotic drugs. Please come back in another ten years and let us know how you're doing.

Why does Iraq have to be brought into everything. I’m ashamed.

So then why are you ashamed of Iraqi's (and our soldiers) deaths? I mean, no one human tragedy is more important than any other, right?
    So why be ashamed?
By the why, calling me an idiot is quite childish, and makes you seem more like Captain Kirkoff than an intelligent debater

  68. Stuart Eugene Thiel Says:

Yes, and when 9/11 reminded us that we could at any moment be killed for no reason by angry, violent young men, in places like the South Side of Chicago they were thinking, "That's how we live every day." That fact didn't prevent us from treating 9/11 like the dress rehearsal for the Apocalypse.

  69. And You Thought REAGAN Was Stupid Says:

VA Tech: 32 students needless die at the hands of a madman.

Iraq War: 3,300 U.S. troops and 55,000+ Iraqi civilians needlessly die in pursuit of the failed policies of a madman.

  70. joe Says:

What kind of 'proof' do you want? I'm actually laughing out loud as I read your last post. I've done more volunteer work for Oxfam and Amnesty Intl than I can even begin to recount, and I'm right now working on organizing a pretty major charity event on my college campus to raise money for AIDS treatments in Africa. What do you want, pictures of me writing down plans? hahaha

  71. B.Fly Says:

wait, I thought you extreme left wing wackos, useful iditos as lenin called his left wing followers, loved the Constitution…..so, wouldn’t you be happy that Bush defended the 2nd Amendment?

Because he trashes the rest of the constitution.

  72. Captain Kirk Says:

    firehead....

these pathetic, useful tools, robots, parrots, mindless drones from the left can't understand why any one of us would be a lot more sad, and a lot more outraged over the death of our son than over the death of our neighbors son........

these idiots actually went after me yesterday for saying that the life of my son of any one member of my family is worth a lot more to me than that of a stranger.

they are hopeless, I just come in here, laugh at their stupidity, throw a few truths at them to see how like rats they run and eat it up and get them all riled up. these left wing nuts are quite easy to control.

these poor saps are one sad joke.......

  73. ForTruth Says:

By "human" Joe means white people who are Americans.

Or else he would have been saddened several times over when hearing about, or seeing the pictures of dead Iraqi children with holes in their heads. Haditha ring a bell?

The policies of the western world, as led by America, including unfair trade practices and colonialism, have caused many of the problems in Africa and other 3rd world nations today. Two can play this game.

  75. Spudge_Boy Says:

    These 33 were AMERCIAN lives.

Actually, you have no idea if that is true. The shooter was South Korean and he is one of the 33 dead.

So, you would at least have to say:

These 32 were AMERCIAN lives and one was South Korean.

Since the lives lost at VT were American lives, that makes them so much more important than students being slaughtered everyday in Iraq.

Is that what you're saying, pissant?

VT is a horrible and shocking tragedy -- the same sort of tragedy that happens almost everyday in Iraq. Why do you and your trollie friends have trouble understanding that?

  89. Anonymous By Choice Says:

Comparing the shootings in America to the shootings in Iraq is just one train of thought in this entire mess.

It certainly is not like the first and only thing the left has ever said about this since the news broke is that it's like the shootings in Iraq.

Professor Cole is simply bringing another view to the table. And it's perfectly reasonable to do so - though some may wish he waited a bit later to say it, so people can grieve without the burden of worrying about the war at the same time.

When something like this happens, there are MANY conversations, many discussion, many questions and comparisons that may come out of this. And I see no reason why one of those thoughts shouldn't be the comparison of this to shootings in other countries.

I DO remember at some point after September 11th (I'm talking about in the year 2001) when people mentioned that the events we faced that day, are in a way like what the Iraqis are facing. While there are no planes hitting buildings, there are bombs from planes hitting buildings.

I don't remember as much outrage from those comparisons. Maybe it's because I have a bad memory, or maybe the comparison was just brought up not right away. There was time for people to grieve before the questions were asked.

    Just an interesting observation:

A friend of mine was wearing a shirt yesterday that said "Baghdad University" across the back (he served with the Air Force in OIF, 2005). Anyway, he was near the University of Utah eating at a Wendy's and a youg female student, mid-20's walked up. She immediately said "Wow, did you study there?" When he looked at her rather puzzled, she pointed to his shirt and said, "Isn't that in Europe?" He explained to her that Baghdad is the capital of Iraq. She responded with, "Is that where that war was?" He then took the time to explain to her that yes, that is where the war was and that it is still going on. She couldn't believe it, and asked him when it was supposed to end. Anyway, he continued making small talk, she was quite cute, and ended out asking her what her major is at the University of Utah - "History"

The students and professors at VA Tech were innocent bystanders. The people of Iraq are TOO and they're being slaughtered at an alarming rate everyday because WE'RE there. How many Iraqi students have you mourned over in the past 4 years? Aren't their lives worth it? If not, why the hell are we there anyway?

Maybe yesterday's violence was a little too close to home for those who don't give a shit about Iraqi's lives. Although I agree with many of you that the 2nd amendment is archaic and obsolete (surely, you Brits can relate), it is part of the constitution. An amendment to the constitution requires a 2/3 super-majority in the house, and the ratification of 3/4 of the states. Pretend for a moment that you have an interest in the truth, not just in bashing the left, and ask yourself whether there are any parallels, analogies or similarities between Iraq and the tragedy in Virginia. Try stepping back from your emotions and ideology just enough to use your mind to analyze the two situations. It's conceivable that you might learn something.

What Prof. Cole and many on TP responding to your vitriolic, personal attacks are claiming is that there are deep, highly instructive parallels here. Try asking yourself what his thinking might be. Try listening to others. You post here on a regular basis and, presumably, you do it not because you're selfish and egocentric, but because you believe you have something worthwhile to contribute. are you so blind that you only see the use of fear from the right? c'mon, wake up and smell the roses.....

the left is full of paranoia....Global Warming, bad economy, etc, etc, etc.....

    # 3 -

The idea of something like this happening at a college campus, which is supposed to be a safe and open place of learning, is the story. Not the death itself.

Okay... but aren't we supposed to think (from claims by Bush, McCain, Cheney and others) that Iraq is a rosey place which is just like American urban cities? The markets are just like ours, and we can shop freely in them? If that's so... shouldn't it be just as shocking that it could happen there?

    hahahahaha!!!

    Comment by Captain Kirk — April 17, 2007 @ 4:52 pm

And you think we don't see that YOU ARE HERE PUSHING YOUR POLITICAL AGENDA? Are you out of your freakin' mind.

You are too funny for words, so tell us, who sends you here to do your POLITICAL work. And when they told you to come here but not to be too political today you thought they meant progressive but not you.

The sad thing is you think you're scary but you're just an impotent little weasel without enough intelligence to drive home a point. Except the one on your head up your ass. And that is one funny visual, neotard.

  158. ForTruth Says:

Thanks Captain for projecting your fear crap on us.

  159. Captain Kirk Says:

    Tobey Tall,

what happened yesterday has nothing to do with gun control, if you were better informed you woulnd't listen to the crap that the BBC spews....

did you know that in Israel the Palestinans started attacking schools and universities in the 1970s. Israel promptly armed professors and created patrols that were led by students and parents and the Palestinians quickly ended their attacks on schools and universities?

    as the old saying goes.....

you can outlaw guns, but outlaws will always have guns.

creating more stringet gun control laws in the USA would only take away guns from people that obey the law. Ask any cop that arrest people with guns how many of those were bought legally.

Leave it to the BBC to spew about what it doesn't know.

Incredible that the left cries about Bush supposedly going against the Constituiton, but they don't mind going after the 2nd Amendment.

leave to the BBC to believe that our 2nd amendment is archaic.....

BBC, fu.....k you.....yes, as classy as the BBC.

  160. Roger Says:

Knuckle-dragging, poorly educated, poorly informed lunatics like Captain Kirk show just how far we have to go in order to move forward as a nation. While clearly he feels he is the one "in the know" the people here understand what he does not; he is the useful idiot. He is the ignorant one. He is the enabler of that which undermines the nation's health and well-being. His ignorant posts and spastic anger show his true colors. Clearly he is frustrated that anyone would make him feel insecure about his beliefs. Otherwise he wouldn't feel compelled to visit the TP board and heap abuse upon people that he doesn't know and trumpet his ignorance and stupidity for all to see.

CK, you are a small, sad and utterly pathetic individual. None of your insults or anger towards us changes that. I pity you, but most certainly do not forgive you. You choose to be this way, even if somewhere deep down inside you know it isn't right.

  161. oldfart Says:

  166. Merlin Says:

Odd how a number of trolls, led by the outerspace cap'n showed up at once on this thread. They were not on the last one. Does anybody who has tenure here know if we are dealing with one troll.
Not that it really matters...just curious. You know, "Seen one troll, smelled 'em all.

From a song from "Carousel," speaking of the captain of a fishing boat in the 1800s
"The first time I met him a whiff of his clothes knocked me flat on the floor of the room..."

I seem to have this problem with the cap'n as well.

  167. Zooey Says:

    Captain Kirk,

Do you think it's wrong that the world fears what we could do to them -- since we attacked Iraq for no reason?

Do you doubt Global Warming exists?

Are you truly confident that the house of cards that is our economy will stand for much longer?

The rich do take advantage of the poor. It's in their interest to keep the poor "in their place." Look it up.

Corporations take advantage of everyone except their owners -- even you.

This president has more power than any president in our history. You can look it up.

Keep living in your little dream world.

if we are going to use comparisons more people die in Americas highways than they do in Iraq.

    Comment by Captain Kirk — April 17, 2007 @ 4:06 pm

Using this logic the attack of 9/11 & subsequents deaths can be ignored since more folks die on highways. Almost any tragedy can be diminished with such faulty thinking. Of course this type of thinking is used hypocritically to make points & ignore truths.

I doubt the people of Iraq are too sympathetic to the U.S. They understand this kind of killing all too well. Maybe GWB should be out in other countries killing students in colleges so they don't get killed in U.S. colleges... seems right up his alley.

  223. DaShamu Says:

It’s sad to see how many people are dealing problems with violence.
Some religions encourage people to take revenge on others; some regimes use violence to control their people. While some video games teach kids how to be violent; some adults show to kids how to solve problems with violence without noticing what influence they might give.
It happens not only between people and people, but also between nations. As one of the leading country in the world, the U.S. government should not show their leadership in a violent way. Bush’s “War on Terror” is one of the great examples.
It is clear that the military solution is continuing to worsen the situation in Iraq, so now is time to reinforce a humanitarian aid to bring peace to the world.
Instead spending $522 billion on U.S. military budget and wasting our precious lives by sending more troops, we can use the money to save so many lives by providing food, water access and sanitation. According to The Borgen Project, it only costs $19 billion to eliminate global hunger.
I hope our next political leader will make a commitment to the U.N.’s Millennium Development Goals to stop the global poverty and make the world a better place.

  227. Jeanne Larson Says:

Because we enjoy our lives so much, we forget that other countries live with death and violence on a daily basis. OUr presence in Iraq has guaranteed its continuance. If we took our heads out of the sand and valued life more than the right to carry a gun, this would not be happening so frequently.

  228. Juan C Says:

For Captain Kirk, when 30 something americans are killed within a university, it´s a shameless, national tragedy that should be taken with all the respect and class it deserves. When thousands of Iraqis are killed, they are collateral damage in the name of democracy.

And this is the guy that said that he would rather see Iraqi children died than his own children. Just a sociopath imagines this gore movie scenario involving innocent people. Well, there you have it, piece of sh*t. Americans killed for no reason, just as Iraqis are blown to pieces for no reason. Dont be sad about the VA tech incident cause it is the same situation you defend in Iraq.

  229. Gerald Gibson Jr Says:

    ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL.

    3 dozen Americans dead.

    3 dozen Iraqis dead.

    Equal.

    Do Americans act like it?

    Some of us do.

Maybe because of that attitude we have done things... bad things.... and that is why so many of "them" around the world hate us.

The VT case is mostly about a lack of anger control. This guy probably had good reasons to be angry. But that doesnt mean you (or ANYONE) gets to go shootup a bunch of innocent people out of anger.

  230. Zooey Says:

    #227 - Well said, Juan.

  231. trippin Says:

Professor Cole is right on target.

And wow -- pull an ostrich's head out of the sand, and boy! Do they get pissed off! Whoooee!!

Take a big deep whiff of the coffee, zipperheads. You have got to deal with reality sooner or later.

  232. Juan C Says:

But that doesnt mean you (or ANYONE) gets to go shootup a bunch of innocent people out of anger.
    Comment by Gerald Gibson Jr

I think the guy was sick, not only angry. How come he had access to a 9 mm AND a 22 with the mental disorder he had goes beyond me. I guess it´s right when they say US is the land of opportunities.

    Zoo. ;)

  233. Zooey Says:

    Juan,

From what I've read, this guy had his problems, but he wasn't adjudicated mentally ill. I guess some of his classmates thought he could be a "school shooter." He was referred for counseling, but that wouldn't show up on a background check. He apparently purchased the guns legally.
    Such opportunity...wow. :}

..."loonies" like me tried to tell you fence straddling "civil" cowards...

...that we should fight all the way to keep Bushiva out of office...

...but Al Gore and you DLC'ers capitulated with minimal resistance...

...allowing the Karl Rove, Tom DeLay thugs to stop the Florida vote recount...

...and SCOTUS to install this TREASONOUS criminal scumbag as president...

...we "loonies" marched and screamed against the msm's propagandizing the "Showdown to Iraq"...

...while you weak kneed appeasers joined the sorry a*s bandwagon...

...caving in to your idiotic, inbred, racist, vengeful, warmongering Bushite:

    family members

...and THEN you betrayed us by voting for Bushiva in '04...

    ...joe...

...Bushiva and L'il Dick have cursed you and your family...

...and YOU don't have the sense to realize it...

    ...who's the "LOONEY"?

  235. James Says:

OK, here is how it stands. When one side of any conflict begins to fight "dirty" then either a third party forces them to pay a penalty for their transgression, or the opponent is left with a difficult choice: fight equally dirty, or lose nobly. If the stakes are high, and defeat is not an option, you are left with no choice but to resort to baser tactics.

Moderates, usually passive and accepting, pondering both sides of the fence, and many republicans as well, are disgusted with the neoconservatives' gross abuse of everything that America stands for, and outright destruction of decades of hard work, as well as decades of future labor needed to mend the problems they created, and are still creating.

They stepped over the line, and now the sensible elements of the nation are scrabbling for any weapon that can be found to fight the Washington spinmasters and their media domination, as well as their subservient citizen base. Something has to roust those people from their vapor dream, and we're damned if we'll die nobly to preserve their fantasy world.

This particular string posting is not at all relevant to the issues discussed herein, but I am frustrated by the complete lack of logical faculty displayed by some of its writers. Captain Kirk, you were the first one over the dirty tactics line with blatant argumentum ad hominem. You can't expect to win any argument solely by insulting the opposition, and I have seen no evidence or reasoning presented by you whatsoever. As for your comrades, if you can present a valid argument supporting Bush then I and even the most left-wing nut job will be happy to listen. Unfortunately for you, I do not believe such an argument exists, especially seeing as I cannot conceive of a single beneficial thing his administration has done for the United States. Not one. You do support him for a reason, right? Could you please elaborate? If you represent your position lucidly I will retract the limited hostility I showed in this post.

  236. Juan C Says:

Thats simply amazing. I recall Bowling for Columbine. I remember the old guy in Columbine that could not speak becuz started crying. Heartbreaking. You, americans are such a bunch of nice people, how come we only see the worst in you (Guns, War, Spending big money, fast food, bring them on, depleted uranium, shopping malls, extreme capitalism, consumer society, plastic bodies, etc? (I dont mean you, Zoo...of course)

  237. Mark Colby Says:

    James,

I agree with you about the lack of logic displayed here and in particular with your criticism of Captain Kirk. But I think you over-estimate him. I see no evidence of any desire on his part to acknowledge logic or to use it. He has no desire to win an argument because that requires arguing. He prefers invectives, insults, personal attacks, and an occasional unsupported assertion. It is futile to attempt a meeting of minds with him and others like him. All we do is feed his ego; after all, he readily admitted that he derives great pleasure from annoying others and from the attention he gets. I'm inclined to believe that anyone who attempts to address him is irresponsible in just the same way that an adult is irresponsible if he knowingly provokes a child to misbehave.

  238. Rufus Says:

I behooves both sides to not attempt to "score political points" - Derbyshire and Blake or us with Iraq or gun control laws. At least not right now. Cover what happened if you want to - but save the lessons for a few weeks.

  239. JPark Says:

Not sure what "us" you are referring to.

  240. Zooey Says:

You, americans are such a bunch of nice people, how come we only see the worst in you (Guns, War, Spending big money, fast food, bring them on, depleted uranium, shopping malls, extreme capitalism, consumer society, plastic bodies, etc? (I dont mean you, Zoo…of course)
    Comment by Juan C

I sometimes think that's what some of us want people outside the US to see. As if they think it impresses people in other countries that we're so "tough" and "rich." But in reality, I think it just makes people sick and disgusted.

    Just a thought.

I'm glad you didn't mean me, Juan. For a minute, I thought you'd found out about my plastic body.... :D

  241. James Says:

Mark, I am inclined to agree with you. However likely it may be that you are right, if we wish to represent the right-thinking and reasonable we are left with no alternative but to listen to what even the most depraved of our opposition has to say. If we call him names and shut him up then we are no better than he is. He must be permitted to make his case, if he has one. If not, then he should realize that he is using the forum equivalent of terrorism to make an otherwise simple argument grey, in support of an administration that has done nothing for him yet has fueled international war and instability in the middle east to make a select spread of corporations wealthier.

I see a simple deductive conclusion in this thread:
    1) Thirty-three people died in a US university.
    2) No sane American would support more "war in Virginia"
    3) Significantly more than thirty-three people die in Iraq every day.
    4) Yet a certain percent of Americans seem to support more war in Iraq.

The inconsistency here is clear. Why would Captain Kirk support Bush if he's getting equally screwed as the rest of us? We need to try to make people like him understand that the whole point of democracy is that each person supports what they think is right. I am not knowingly provoking him to misbehave, as you have (tactfully, thank you) suggested. I am trying to get him to question his assumptions. If it turns out that he is beyond considering his assumptions, then I have lost nothing but a few minutes of my time.

  242. Mark Colby Says:

    James,

I certainly understand your position and its underlying idealism. (As a professor of philosophy, I confess to a residue of idealism myself.) I'm not recommending that anyone "call him names" or "shut him up," for that would certainly make us no better than he is, as you said. He should be permitted to make his case, but until he actually makes a case, he should be ignored. Being ignored is not being censored; it merely reflects a demand for certain minimal standards of intellectual and moral integrity.

You're right about the deductive conclusion and the inconsistency, but again, he and others like him don't value consistency. I doubt whether we could ever "make him understand" because he doesn't have any desire to understand. He desires only to be right at all times and by any means except rational argument. Yes, in principle it would be desirable to get him to "question his assumptions," but why would someone like him, so willing to insult, deprecate, condescend, and laugh at us all the time he's doing so, care to question anything, let alone his assumptions? (If you think I'm exaggerating, look at his replies to this thread; many of them are appalling.)

I'm not sure if I understood your last point, but I want to state that I wasn't implying that you or anyone else was knowingly provoking him to misbehave. What I was suggesting is that, at a certain point, it should become clear that attempts at a meeting of minds through rational argument are utterly futile and merely provoke him further. I'm suggesting, further, that this point has been reached with him. His undisguised glee and gloating are evidence of this.

The horror. The bloodshed. The carnage. Hell on Earth. You can't escape the truth. Neither can I. American troops, the Iraqis -- everyone is being butchered. Lied into a war without justification - Americans have been brought to their knees by the Sunni and Shia death squads. There is no food, no water, no jobs, The country is in peril. Over 500,000 civilians have been killled as est. by Johns Hopkins Univ. Over 70% of Americans support an immediate withdrawal. The 1-party state has been ousted as retribution for this crime of epic proportions. The American people have spoken.

  244. Chocolate Jesus Says:

why don’t you imbeciles go to Virginia Tech and tell them how what happened there is comparable to what is going on in Iraq and then let me know how many bullet holes you mindless tools come back with.

why don’t you flaghumping jesus-jacking nazis go to Iraq and tell them how what happened there is comparable to what happened at Virginia tech and then let me know how many bullet holes you come back with?

hey Jake , Kirk, jackoff, whatever your name is... Juan really hit a nerve, didnt we? at least the people in Virginia know they can safely attend funerals for their loved one without fear they will be killed also. oh wait, i forgot, im not supposed to give a shit about the brown people my tax dollars helping to kill..

    http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/04/17/vatech.writings/index.html

I'm sure this poor deluded fellow was merely brainwashed by the dogma of some theatre professor getting his fabulous fatwas from the dirty sodomite "man-lips" of Ayatollah Pelosi . If this guy had a decent, traditional, god-fearing education he would know that brown people are supposed to be on the RECEIVING end of our 2nd amendment rights! sheesh...some people really wanna rock the boat...

I didnt know the hundreds of thousands of people in iraq more than I did the 33 people killed in virginia... according to your logic, the peopel in virginia are more important, but frankly, im more bothered by the hundreds of thousands dead in iraq.. why? because they are being killed in my name and with my tax dolllars...and there are ALOT more of them...

watching you melt down is truly amusing, glad to know the nerve has been struck... are you going to keep crying and cursing and sh!tting in your diapers all night little girl?

  245. Thinking of becoming a Canadian Says:

Thank god someone spoke to this topic.
We in America don't seem to care about Iraqis. 365,000 Iraqis have died in our war over the course of roughly 4 years. That is about 250 Iraqi deaths a day.
All this so we can take the war to their streets instead of ours. Well, I guess it has worked since we haven't been attacked in 5 years. I guess it was worth it?

  246. jallen Says:

People being terrorized at a college in one nation is TOTALLY different than people being terrorized at a college in another nation? hummm.....You say there's obviously no connection here, but then you want us to beleive there's a connection between Iraq and 9-11??????

  247. A person Says:

Its unbelievable the first comments on this topic. How can you possibly take those views when your country has absolutely destroyed Iraq. Comparing your lives to others and then saying your life is better, HOW FREAKING IGNORANT ARE YOU! This is why I truly loath Americans, and quite frankly being a Canadian (being right next to you ignorant country) and being associated with you disgusts me.

  248. Tim Says:

Echoing Cole, Iraq Slogger published a post today recounting the brutal scenes of violence that Iraq’s universities have witnessed in recent months:

what is a Slogger, is that a typo, or is there a new spin on the word Blog? Social Blogger would be redundant, I'm confused.

  250. Red Says:

Where's the humanity in all this?

i'd first like to say that we can THANK THE PAPARAZZI on this one for immediately broadcasting an event that should respectfully have time to unfold and be contained. News spread like wildfire and it was completely intrusive and unnecessary to prod at such a tragic event without giving it time to unfold. ** 24-hour news is like a horde of gnats just waiting for somethin juicey to devour.** . . . another heaping American epidemic

ITS A TERRIBLE THING THAT HAPPENED AT VIRGINIA TECH, BUT THE REAL DAMAGE WAS DONE BEFORE THE SHOOTING WITH FAILURES IN OUR SYSTEM AND OUR NARROWED VIEW OF THE EVENT.

Metal detectors and better security is not the answer to this problem, but if you want to waste your time with that... by all means, we've got stuff to change at the volatile tip of the social pyramid.

  251. parkman Says:

Poor "Kirk", as well as those replying to him who sank to his illiterate and pathetic level, read like the next Cho. What has happened to "civilized discourse"? Has it gone the way of soi-disant civilization?

  252. Das Says:

Yes, and everyday 7000 babies are aborted in India. Oh wait, that doesn't serve to promote the leftist mission statement.

It's pretty sad when you top scientologists to become the coldest vulture to use the dead for your gain. Good job, that's progress!

  253. I CANT GO BACK TO SLEEP Says:

POOR, POOR, SOULS STILL TRAPPED IN THE LEFT, RIGHT ILLUSION AMERICA IS BEING DESTROYED BY DESIGN FROM THE LEFT AND THE RIGHT. THE DEMS HAVE BEEN IN OFFICE FOR 100 PLUS DAYS. HAVE THEY MOVED TO REPEAL THE MILITARY COMISSIONS ACT THAT OBLITERATED HABIS CORPUS THE LINCH PIN OF THE BILL OF RIGHTS? NO!! HAVE THEY MOVED TO GET US OUT OF IRAQ? NO! IN THIS WORLD THERE ARE ONLY HAVES AND HAVE NOTS.THE PEOPLE MAY HAVE SPOKEN BUT THE "ELECTED" CORPORATE WHORES DIDNT LISTEN. EVERY THING YOU KNOW IS A LIE!!! CAN YOU SAY REVOLUTION????

  254. Dandy Says:

    Parkman,
I agree with you. some of these "people" sound like they are the next school shooters.

  255. European Brain Says:

EVERYONE in America should have a gun! And the bullets should be distributed freely. Then you can shoot each other until nobody is left and the world is free again.
The few Americans who disagree with that are welcome in countries where people actually use their brain from time to time. But I guess most of them left America already.

    Have a nice shooting day!

  256. anon Says:

hey retards..people are killed there because of beliefs mostly, while the VT incident and columbine and etc. were from rejects in the u.s.

  257. the House of Plants Says:

The guy who cant get back to sleep is bang on. The whole idea of right vs left was created so ignorant f*cks like you would argue over trivial things while the U.S.A. was destroyed by design from the inside. This has been planned for a very long time and cannot be stopped, the only question is whether we live in "1984" or "brave new world", not just you guys in america but the whole world. Do you guys have any idea that exactly the same thing thats happening in your country was done in the 3rd reich, if you had asked any german at the time if they would turn into a fascist state they would have laughed at you "we have laws to stop that from happening, duhh". your laws that stop that from happening to you dont exist anymore thanks to your "elected" president. Politicians are just actors, have you ever listened to what they actually say, its all just abstract and what you think you want to hear, they get chosen for their ability to look like they believe what they are saying. WAKE THE F*CK UP YOU C*NTS!!!!! and to captain anal fist kirk, how old are you? ill bet your about 15 and get molested by your dad on a bi-weekly basis, does he have a few glasses of scotch then tell you youve been bad and need some rebuke. then does he make you give him head to get him started then bend you over and give you the full force and hammer it home? you little f*cktard, you have no f*cking idea about anything, if you see anything you disagree with you call it extreme left just like your masturbatory fantasies bill o'reily and sean hannity. Thousands of people die every day, that is what is sad, its not which country they are from, while africa has more, africa was never a safe place, except before colonialisation, the reason why people are sayin about iraq is that iraqi universities used to be a safe place untill you c*nts rocked on up and raped their country, so it is your fault.

if theres gonna be a revolution, sign me up

  258. Lee Says:

I love it? Shall we all pause for a moment of prayer people; then get the good shit on, ha! ha!

  259. B.A.B. Says:

the vast majority of the comments here are pathetic... captain kirk stop trying to sound clever, it doesn't suit a moron like you.

The "extreme" left/right paradigm is an illusion and I'd suggest you all stop buying into it so shamelessly. The Virginia Tech shootings are tragic, as is everything else occuring every second. Face it, the world we've created is dying and there's nothing left to do now but end it all. You think sitting here talking shite on a website achieves anything? You all just want to sound cleverer than the guy above you so you can pat yourselves on the back, comfort yourself, "at least I know the truth". Haha, the Truth is so beyond all of you it would frighten you if you could even begin to conceptualise it (which you can't, so don't worry).

ALL OF YOU ARE NOTHING BUT FLIES TAKING TURNS TO SPLATTER THEMSELVES ON THE WINDSCREENS OF DECEPTION, REALISE THIS AND ELEVATE OR DIE WITHOUT MEANING IN A MESS LIKE ALL THE REST.
