“A student gunman originally from South Korea was behind the deadliest massacre in U.S. history, killing 32 people on the campus of Virginia Tech, before taking his own life, police said. The shooter’s name is Cho Seung-Hui, a 23-year-old, who was a senior and an English major at the school, police said.”

April 17th, 2007 at 9:57 amHis girlfriend dumped him for a black guy at the college, so he went to the dorm room and found them in bed, then shot them to death. Then he walked around the college for 2 hours until he went berserk shooting other students then himself.
April 17th, 2007 at 10:02 amHe has been identified, despite earlier reports that he took his own life by shooting himself in the face, making positive ID difficult?
A 9mm shell disfiguring a face to the point where identification becomes difficult???
From the linked article:
Well, now…isn’t that convenient. The shooter goes to all the trouble to eradicate the serial numbers on the guns, but carries around documentation on the weapons in a backpack???
Sound a bit like the 9/11 terrorists conveniently leaving baggage containing confessions, wills, flight manuals, and copies of the Qur’an, doesn’t it?
Folks, keep a real close eye on this one. Something is rotten in Denmark.

April 17th, 2007 at 10:10 amHaving been a machinist earlier in life, my experience tells me a file or a grinder would be required to remove serial numbers from steel.
This is something one would see on stolen weapons…
“because he can”
April 17th, 2007 at 10:12 amThere is something worng with the accounts so far.
The quick conclusion that the shooter killed himself was not backed up by any direct comment form the police who arrived at Norris.
The cell phone video has the witness first hearing the shots and show the police as already being there but not reacting.
Didn’t the shooting at Norris extend for twenty minures?
There is a lot of dogs not barking here

April 17th, 2007 at 10:16 amI had heard earlier that the serial numbers on both weapons had been etched away. Have the ballistic tests been done yet? Granted, at this point, it’s kind of moot, but the proof would be nice to see.
My condolences to all the families affected by this tragedy.

April 17th, 2007 at 10:18 amI read the same story as jay randal described, katy, I am trying to backtrack to find it.
April 17th, 2007 at 10:18 amA hint of this was around yesterday, the initial shooting was considered a “domestic dispute”, somehow the police knew the suspect was “looking for his girlfriend…”
katy > the first person confirmed killed by the gunman was a black male student. The female with him in the dorm room at 7 AM in the morning was the shooter’s former girlfriend. The college police believed it was a domestic dispute and therefore no further killing would occur. Instead the guy went completely nuts and decided to kill as many people as possible, before ending his own life.
April 17th, 2007 at 10:19 amballistics have indicated one of the weapons was used in both locations
April 17th, 2007 at 10:20 amGotta go with Occam’s here. Some guy went nuts, grabbed a gun, and shot a bunch of people. I’m not ready to go all conspiracy on it just yet.
Unless someone can explain to me what purpose would be served, and who it would serve.
April 17th, 2007 at 10:21 amI’m with the Tripmaster on this one. Something is mighty weird about this…

And, hey, believe me – I smell conspiracy in just about everything. I just don’t see where this would really serve any purpose. An act of international terrorism – yes. Some Korean student going all postal – not so much. It will just postpone the problems of the Bush administration . They’ll still be there when this all calms down.

That is Jesus’ decision. He will judge them based on their lives and biblical standards, but I truly feel sorry for their families.
April 17th, 2007 at 10:35 amJay,
The article said the shooter was a loner, and people didn’t know much about him. It’s easy to speculate that the girl dumped him for the guy who was killed with her, but it’s just as easy to speculate that the shooter was obsessed with the girl, and she never even knew he existed.
We should wait for the facts.
April 17th, 2007 at 10:35 amkaty > late last night CNN reported the identity of the first victim in the shooting spree. He was killed in the dorm room at aprox. 7:15 AM and was with a female who was also shot dead. Police reported the shooter was looking for his girlfriend. I am just commenting on his motivation for the crime: jilted boyfriend goes on rampage.

It also pisses me off about VT not notifying their students for 2 hours, not doing anything. That aspect was ALL image. I said something like that last night on the Judiciary Committee wants Paulose interview thread. Possible Black OP and let’s review the past few years…
9-11-01 – USA attacked by Osama so Bush attacks Iraq & Afghanistan
10-26-01 – Patriot Act signed by Bush
3-13-02 – Q: Mr. President, in your speeches now you rarely talk or mention Osama bin Laden. Why is that?
A: So I don’t know where he is. You know, I just don’t spend that much time on him, Kelly, to be honest with you. I’m more worried about making sure that our soldiers are well-supplied; that the strategy is clear; that the coalition is strong; that when we find enemy bunched up like we did in Shahikot Mountains, that the military has all the support it needs to go in and do the job, which they did.
3-20-03 – Iraq invasion….
10-29-04 – Five days before the 2004 presidential election, Osama bin Laden released a video to Al Jazeera; it was his first on camera appearance in nearly three years. It was obvious at the time who benefited politically from this “October surprise.” The tape helped George W. Bush and hurt his challenger, John Kerry. Given the timing and subject matter of the tape, it was clear that Bin Laden was attempting to influence the U.S. election, and, almost surely, knew that the tape would benefit President Bush.
11-02-04 has come and gone and the election is over. George W. Bush not only won the Electoral College votes, but he also won the popular vote as well — by at least three million votes.
Time passes while much happens have a look…
Timeline of Terror Alerts
07′ gives us a Democratic Majority in congress and leads to several scandals… AG hearing set for April 17,2007
4-16-07 – Korean (immigrant) kills 32 during a 4 hour long shooting spree then commits suicide… AG hearing postponed and anti-gun lobby calls for federal gun ban…
When things look bad for Bush some event happens that steals focus from the prize. Coincidence?

April 17th, 2007 at 10:49 amWell, it seems like just some blatherings by gun nuts. Forgive me, but I still don’t seem to get it.

What gets me is that they thought it sufficient to notify students only by email. I don’t know about anyone else, but once I’m on campus I rarely check my email. April 17th, 2007 at 11:10 amggibson > Virginia Tech has over 25,000 students and 2,600 acres of buildings and grounds. The police believed the first incident in the morning was a domestic dispute and therefore not a concern for the other students, but they surmised wrong and 30 other people died for it. CNN just announced another student died of gunshot wounds this morning > 18 year old female. So 33 killed plus the gunman himself.

April 17th, 2007 at 11:12 amFile this under speculations:
Possible factors influencing rampage by disturbed young man…
1. Young male – more prone to lethal violent rejection and jealousy fueled rage than females, or older persons seasoned by love loss.
2. Racial aspect…history of Korean vs Black antagonism in some US cities, ie LA riots.
3. Possible religious stressor….South Koreans have been heavily proselytized by evangelical christians, who converted many. Korean evangelicals are often strong believers with rigid consciences. Many have immigrated to the US along with their churches and right-wing views.
What will we learn about his religious beliefs, if any, and what frustrations and conflicts may have been intensified by fundamentalist strictures inciting moralistic anger “justifying” his rage.
4. Tech schools are often quite stressful, and foster a culture which is resistant to psychologizing, offering limited mental health services and outreach, overlooking the isolation and harmful competitiveness which comes along with science and engineering disciplines and the students who are drawn to such careers…not always the most emotionally mature or socially adept at an age when few of us are.

H.R. 1022 = Gun Grab Bill for 2007 will violate these two RIGHTS at least if not more.
2nd Amendment: A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the People to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.
Banning the possession of a material property granted to the people as the last line of defense for both the individual citizen and the nation will infringe on my constitutional right to keep and bear arms.
4th Amendment: The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
The act of confiscating said weapons will infringe on my Constitutional right to be secure in my home and with my personal effects.
More to the point the gun grab can only be directed at legal gun holders since those are the guns known to exist. All legal guns are registered. Guns in the possession of criminals are similar in nature to the guns used yesterday. Defaced serials indicate that these weapons were stolen. According to some of the reading one of the guns was stolen from a police officer.
Grabbing legal guns will in fact disarm victims of crimes. VT banned guns 1 year ago and if law abiding citizens were able to carry rather than surrender the body count might be much lower.
Regarding Black OPS; this could be what we are told it is or we can question the hours that passed as the body count grew. Like 9-11 all of these victims simply stood there like deer in our headlights? Then like magic there is a gun ban bill.

ABC news on the net is reporting the gunmen went back to his dorm room to write a suicide note, after he killed the couple, then he went on his rampage. If the authorities release the note to the press, then we will know why he shot the guy and female early in the morning that then sparked the rampage.

Well thats life…. you cant shut down the whole works just because of a domestic dispute. Well I guess you can in a police state, but not in America. This stuff has been going on for thousands of years. Every once in a blue moon it turns out to be a massacre… you just have to accept it because it will go on whether you accept it or not. You cannot expect the police to act like WWIII just started everytime some jealous lover goes nuts.

Well said.
April 17th, 2007 at 12:19 pmwhat bothers me about the reporting is that the msm were hammering home a theme before any facts were known. last i heard this morning the police were still refusing to rule out a second gunman. if there was a second gunman then the probability of this being a lover’s quarrel drops precipitously.
also, i think you would have to be extremely lucky to kill a group of almost 30 people with a twenty-two and a 9mm. you have to be 100% accurate to kill with a twenty-two, and the 9mm has a limited magazine capacity. you’d have to be very good to that many killing shots off.
cognitive dissonance: in america, the idea of a programmed killer is a tinfoil hat conspiracy nut idea. in the middle east, suicide bombers are a dime a dozen.

Thank goodness for that! I have no problem with people who wish to follow their religion. The problem I have is with the idiots who feel it’s their right to throw their beliefs in my face without taking into consideration my feelings.
Those who feel they have to force us to believe as they do are the ones I have a major problem with. Follow who you want to follow. I am not a lemming to blindly follow the first thing that comes in front of me.

April 17th, 2007 at 12:39 pmWhat the hell were they supposed to do??? Call each of the 26,000 students individually????
By the way, most of the students likely had email capable cellphones, PDA’s, Blackberries, etc. so the mass email could have actually reached a good number of students.
April 17th, 2007 at 12:44 pmSome of the details leave something to be desired. First the shooter was identified as Chinese (Red scare?), then only Asian and finally from South Korea. The very slow pace of news coming out looked like a severe case of CYA and the lawsuits certain to be filed in the future. Lastly, it was first reported as a domestic fight with a former girlfriend and then that he was a loner. Which is it? I’m already tired of the dualing stories.

April 17th, 2007 at 12:50 pm>Also the fact that the students were told via email.

why? VT requires students and faculty have computers, issue email addresses to everyone, and at this point every cell phone made since 2004 can be set to receive emails.
i guess having 100 phone operators come in and make 250 phone calls each makes more sense? email is the best way to reach a student, hands down.

The way the news was passed along at our college was by intercom.

I am not weird, It’s just that I love Jesus. I’m a witness for him. I’m just stating that this situation should remind everyone that life isn’t promised to you. If you know that your life isn’t right, you need to give it to Jesus. I wish I could have an alter call in Blacksburg. There are alot of hurting students that need him.

April 17th, 2007 at 1:04 pmOk, how many people were lucky enough to check their e-mail in that slim time frame???? I certainly don’t spend my day checking my e-mails and I don’t check it at all on my cell. Most people check it once or twice unles they are in a job that necessitates it.
April 17th, 2007 at 1:17 pmDaryll, do you have to use this tragedy as a vehicle for trolling for converts? I suspect that in the face of all the sadness and horror, your savior would want you to just shut up unless you were tending to the families who have lost loved ones. As Matthew suggested, this would be an excellent time for someone like you to go into a dark room by yourself and pray to your god.
April 17th, 2007 at 1:33 pmI doubt if I had been part of their campus police if I would have anticipated a shooting rampage after finding the first victims, either. I don’t fault the campus police.
But the kid didn’t just lose it and go on the rampage, from all reports it was planned out – the chains on the doors, for example, you usually don’t see something like that in a crime of passion.
April 17th, 2007 at 2:07 pmso, cho was a loner with a girlfriend who had enough spare time to stalk other women. he sets fire to a dorm room, but is still on campus. weird.
the doctor at the hospital where most of the wounded were taken said that no victim had less than three gunshot wounds. the best information i have is that there were a total of 27 wounded, so 19 seems like a fair sample. assuming that the victims who didn’t make it also had 3 wounds apiece, that comes to 187 rounds fired. apparently there were a number of rounds fired through closed doors, so we’re talking about 200 rounds.
that’s a lot of rounds.
the walther p22 has a 10 round capacity. the glock 19, a common 9mm model, has a maximum 15 round capacity. either cho had a shyteload of magazines, or else he had to reload a lot.
things to consider about pistols:
1) a gun is a machine, you have to learn how to operate it
2) even if you know how to use it, you have to practice to be able to hit anything with it
3) you’re not born knowing how to load a magazine. it takes a while to develop the muscle memory needed to do it reasonably efficiently.
not counting cho, 59 people have been reported killed or wounded. considering the choice of weapons, it seems odd that more were killed than were wounded. even so, it must have been a physically exhausting feat.
i don’t know where i’m going here. all i know is that something tripped my bullshit meter.

April 17th, 2007 at 3:07 pm…
saw some cnn over lunch. looks like my guess was right about the gun models. nothing was said about laser sights, which would have made the episode more plausible to me. it’s possible laser sights will be introduced at some point.
cnn lowballed the number of wounded and therefore the estimated number of rounds. their top estimate was 150. my low estimate is 200.
cnn reported that cho bought the glock at a local gunshop 36 days ago for $571. at that price it was probably brand new. new guns usually come with 2 clips, so it’s probable that cho had two fully loaded clips for each gun when (if) he started. in order to minimize the number of reloads he shouldn’t have reloaded the 22 at all because it had the smaller capacity. that means he had to reload a minimum of 10 times (proof left to the reader).
cnn reported that the atf recovered the serial numbers that had been filed from the guns. i can’t see why cho would’ve filed the serial numbers, its the ballistics that get you. plus he was going on a one-way trip. why bother? funny that the filing and restoring allows for the old switcheroony. not that the atf would do that.
the little of the report that i saw sounded mostly like ridiculously weak anti-gun propaganda. maybe the h.r. 1022 guys are right. pretty hard to have a police state crackdown on an armed populace.
keith olberman said we now have the bill of right, the 2nd amendment being the only one left. hate to see that one go, if only for auld lang syne.
April 17th, 2007 at 4:25 pmZooey, look for Creomulsion cough syrup – works wonders on the vocal issues. Yes, it has beechwood creosote in it (the stuff you put on fenceposts so they won’t rot) and tastes like crap, but it works miracles.
April 17th, 2007 at 4:33 pmWhitey, good luck with the teeth…ow.
i think what that cho guy did was good, he killed many innocent people, but the teachers will be afraid to abuse the student in future. i read what he wrote, he said he is sacrificing himself for all the weak and helpless guys. and its true. first i thought he was a monster but after i read what he wrote i can see the benefit of what he did. you see in our world people only respect one thing — strength. if you are big and tall everyone respect you, if you are small everyone treats you like shit. cho showed that small guys can turn nasty if pushed too far, and that will make people afraid to pick on small guys, especially students. innocent people died, that’s unfortunate. but the same thing happens in a war, innocent die in order to correct some other evil. cho was kicked out of poetry and literature class for his writing, he was a shy guy so when he tried to hit on a couple girls in a somewhat clumsy way they ratted on him. girls don’t have the guts to say “i am not interested, but thank you for asking†to guys they find unattractive, instead they pretend they like them, flirt with them, than behind their back they rat on them and backstab them. and misandrist men are all to happy carrying out their dirty duties falsely accusing a guy of harassment. sex discriminates against the ugly. they don’t realize that ugly guys are people too who also deserve to have fun and be happy. taking a kinder and gentler attitude towards all humankind might serve these pampered women with low self-esteem well. its easy to ridicule men, to blame men, to ignore men. but it is not easy to be a man. especially an ugly short man like cho. society prepares the crime the criminal commits it.
feminists and men who support gender biased, sexist, anti-male laws including the school system, police, justice system, and government are responsible for emasculation of men, which is the cause of the social anxiety among young men like cho. feminists would rather nitpick and close down a corporation which is supporting thousands of women who feed their babies because some guy hang a victoria’s secret angel over the time clock. its time women got over themselves and men stopped impersonating sentimental buffoons catering to their vile whims.
as for the media, its common sense that by rewarding cho with what he was aiming for – publicity they are sending the message that whoever kills a lot of people will be rewarded with publicity. why stop there? announce a bloody reward for the families of dead serial killers so you can get your bloody ratings. what do you expect from a society which is so utterly lacking in integrity? you are worse than the cho dude, you may be snug and secure behind your desks, but you are encouraging murder.
