April 18th, 2007 at 9:50 pmOne aspect of this “they didn’t fight back” thing that I have not seen anywhere is a discussion of the tactical advantage that the shooter had. He had the halls and the doorways. If someone came out of a classroom he could easily shoot them before they got to him. When he came into a classroom all of the victims were in front of him, and if they tried to jump him or whatever they would have been shot on the spot. Barring the doors was pretty much the only option available to them to defend themselves. And they did defend themselves by blocking the doors. The conservative a$$holes spewing this crap are ignoring the reality of the situation the people at VT faced. Not that they ever recognize reality…

Most of them, when they had an opportunity to serve under arms, in peace or wartime, when someone might actually shoot at them, they had other priorities…almost all of them. It is time now to bring back the ‘Fairness Doctrine’ for whats left of the PUBLIC broadcast spectrum so the nearly constant 24 hour flow of sewage from the rightwing comentators can be offset with information opposing their warmongering. They want others go to fight while they and their super rich and family priveleged benefactors stay home.

But the real culprit in this tragedy is the failed mental health system in this country which was disassembled by America’s most OVERRATED PRESIDENT, Ronald Reagan.
Listening to parents and mental health professionals talking on the radio today about how there is no help available for the mentally ill until they become criminals. And then they end up in prisons still without getting the treatment they need.
Many people at the VT, teachers and students warned that Cho Seung-Hui was a problem and even a judge said he needed help. Unfortunately there is no long term care facilities left in this country to deal with them.
While the people support Bush’s war and think no money is too much to fight Muslims what would they say if asked to support mental health initiatives to try to prevent the next incident of “domestic terrorism.”

Most services are closed and seniors are lying because they can’t afford their medication. Millions are losing their homes and Bush has succeeded in leaving all kids behind in education. This is just the beginning of our problems the terror we should be worried about is right here in the US not the Middle East.

April 18th, 2007 at 11:38 pmUntil you’ve been shot at, you have no idea what you would do or how you would react. My entire family got shot at one night in front of our house when thieves stole my mother’s car. She went outside to stop the man, trying to pull him out of her car. They fired at her, my father when he went out to stop her, and me when I poked my head out of the window and yelled at them. Miraculously none of us were hit.
Two days later, we went to vote, and while standing in line, some old biddies were discussing the incident (it made the newspaper) talking about how “that stupid lady went outside”. I can just about bet that they were there to vote Republican. I turned around and let them have it – I also reminded them that they weren’t there and that they weren’t the ones shot at (I went outside immediately to check on my mother while the thieves drove away, while my father was on the phone calling 911).
Moral of the story? Some neo-conservative jerks are going to complain no matter *what* people do. That’s what they are best at – criticizing others. They are great at finding faults in others because they don’t want to spend any time looking at their own. Had the students fought back, they would have been “crazy” or “heathens” or something. Because they were fired upon and confused (and again, until you have been caught by surprise and shot at, you have no idea what you will do) they are “cowards”?
Let me make a suggestion to those that criticize the students: STFU and do not pass judgement until you have looked down the barrel of a gun, and seen those that you care for in harms way. There is no right or wrong reaction to someone shooting at you. The only wrong is the idiot that started shooting innocent people to begin with.
Deriding the innocent excuses evil simply because the outcome was tragic. More than likely, though, those expressing contempt for the students involved in the tragedy are like teenagers believing in their own immortality – they think it could never happen to them. That is an extremely dangerous assumption to make.

There was a poignant funeral service today in new york for the professor Librescu. its so sad how a person like that (one of the few left) who survived the holocaust and then communism couldnt die of natural causes, but had to be killed saving his students.
Tv news interviewed hsi wife and son and even had a student from 2 years ago now living in new york (who also lost a classmate) who spoke about him as a person who truly cared about each and every student.

A Ton-ton Macoute (Secret Police thug) got out of the taxi and shot the front 2 tires of the vehicle. He then was going to shoot dead the driver, so I got out to confront him. He pointed his gun at my head from about 5 feet away threatening to kill me and the driver. I stood my ground and called him a swine in Haitian. I then turned my back to him and stood there, deciding if I was to die then he would have to shoot me in the back in front of hundreds of Haitians. He lowered his gun in humiliation and the driver thanked me for saving his life. Sometimes you have to face your fears and resist even if it could mean your death.
The students at Virginia Tech who died were NOT cowards. They tried to resist against an armed madman. I can understand their situation, because I was almost killed by a madman too.

Anyone in that situation needs to remember that SURVIVING is your #1 priority. It is beyond foolish to try to “fight” the offender unless there is a relative certainty you can take him. I would never advise that someone fight back. Resist, but not fight back. There is a difference.
The Prof and the student that blocked the doors resisted. Their resistance saved lives.
