Breaking: FBI Raids Rep. Doolittle’s Home»

doolittlesrings.gif

Roll Call reports, “The FBI has raided the Northern Virginia home of Rep. John Doolittle (R-Calif.), according to Congressional sources. No details are publicly available yet about the circumstances of the raid, but Doolittle and his wife, Julie, have been under federal investigation for their ties to the scandal surrounding imprisoned former lobbyist Jack Abramoff.”

UPDATE: The Hill has more details:

The FBI searched the Virginia home of Rep. John Doolittle (R-Calif.) last Friday in its investigation into the ties of the congressman and his wife, Julie, to disgraced former lobbyist Jack Abramoff, according to law enforcement and other Congressional and K Street sources. […]

Doolittle has been under fire for paying his wife’s company, Sierra Dominion, a 15 percent commission on all contributions that the company raised for Doolittle’s campaign committee and leadership PAC. Her only other clients were Abramoff’s former firm, Greenberg Traurig; Abramoff’s former restaurant Signatures; and the Korea-U.S. Exchange Council, which Ed Buckham, a former chief of staff to ex-Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas), created.

The Justice Department previously subpoenaed Julie Doolittle’s files.

Doolittle also received contributions from indicted defense contractor Brent Wilkes and his associates, and investigators are probing whether those contributions are linked to any official action Doolittle took to help Wilkes’s company obtain millions of dollars in government earmarks.

UPDATE II: Lobbyist Kevin Ring, a former aide to Rep. John Doolittle (R-CA), resigned from his law firm last Friday, the same day as the raid on Dolittle’s home. As Politico reported, Ring “often served as an intermediary between Abramoff’s clients and Doolittle’s office, according to news reports, and has remained close to Doolittle and his wife, Julie, who did consulting work for Abramoff.” It’s suspected that Ring may have reached a plea agreement with prosecutors.

UPDATE III: Calitics has news and reaction from Doolittle’s district.

UPDATE IV: Doolittle throws his wife under the bus.

Hmm, the press is very preoccupied right now showing us the same video clips that we have seen for the past three days.
I don’t want to take anything away from the tragedy at VT, but isn’t the coverage redundant and repetitive now?
The other news of the day is not being covered.

Attempt to take the heat off of Gonzo-gate and the various e-mail scandals? You decide.

Scare tactic to other Republican members at the hearing tomorrow? A “we’ve got the goods on you” shot across the bow?

The FBI is part of DOJ and the DOJ is part of the RNC.

  7. Raven Says:

Abramoff must really want to get out of the slammer!

Doo-wa-diddy-diddy-dum-diddy-do….do-wap…dolittle. Fingers caught in Jackie’s cookie jar, eh? Looks like Abrahamoff is singing! I can’t imagine how much he’s telling on the republican party and this white house. Remember Dubya saying, unequivocally, that he has so many visitors to the white house that he didn’t remember Jack Abrahamoff??? BWAHHAAHAHAHAHAH!

  9. Raven Says:

I’ve given up on the CBS web news site, they have had a large portrait of the VT gunman top dead center up for three days now.

  14. Chris L Says:

Wow. I don’t want to make any assumptions, or jump to conclusions about what is happening, but please realize, it takes quite a bit for the FBI to raid someone’s home. This requires a warrant, and usually attorneys (especially right now), are more than a little cautious when signing a warrant to search the home of a congressman. The FBI must have had something pretty decent to show as cause for this.

  15. Zep Tepi Says:

Where is Jake to defend this?

Why do Republicans hate Senior Citizens?
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A bill that would let the U.S. government negotiate prices for Medicare prescription drugs stalled in the U.S. Senate on Wednesday when Republican opponents blocked a vote on the legislation.

Isn’t the Republican party supposed to be the compassionate party? Why do they not want our seniors citizens to get the medications they need at a decent price? This is not what Jesus would do. Why do the Republicans love money more than God?

He looks like someone who’d flip in a heartbeat. Doolittle is going to do a lot in helping destroy the current Republican Party.

  30. Spudge_Boy Says:

Here’s one for ya that isn’t being covered:

London - A government official and an ex-political researcher stood trial on Wednesday for allegedly leaking a classified memo in which US President George Bush reportedly referred to bombing Qatar-based broadcaster Al-Jazeera.

David Keogh, 50, a cipher expert, and Leo O’Connor, 44, a lawmaker’s aide, are accused of violating secrets laws by disclosing a document relating to 2004 talks between Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Keogh is alleged to have passed the memo to O’Connor in May 2004, who in turn placed it in a file he handed to his boss, Tony Clarke, then a legislator who had voted against Britain’s decision to join the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper previously has reported that the memo noted Blair had argued against Bush’s suggestion of bombing Al-Jazeera’s headquarters in Doha, Qatar. The Daily Mirror said its sources disagreed on whether Bush’s suggestion was serious.

Blair has said he had no information about any proposed US action against Al-Jazeera, and the White House called the claims “outlandish and inconceivable.”

Prosecutor David Perry did not mention the claim in court, but said jurors would see the document during parts of the hearing closed to the public, because of the sensitivity of the contents.

The document - marked “Secret-Personal” - was intended to be restricted to senior officials and was written by a Blair adviser, he said.

Blair’s staff circulated the memo to a range of military and political officials in London, Washington, the United Nations and Iraq - including Britain’s MI6 spy agency.

Keogh and O’Connor had put the lives of troops in Iraq at risk because the memo contained defence data, Perry said. Bush and Blair met in Washington on April 16, 2004, while the Coalition Provisional Authority was acting as administrator in postwar Iraq and “against the background of the insurgency.”

“We live in a democratic society, not the Wild West,” Perry told the court. “It is not for people to decide they are going to be the sheriff in town.”

Keogh worked at a government communications bunker handling sensitive documents and intelligence, Perry said. The unit relayed information to diplomats overseas via encrypted or secure methods.

Perry said Keogh received a faxed copy of the memo to send on to official, but duplicated it unlawfully before doing so and later passed the document to O’Connor.

Clarke, who is no longer a lawmaker, alerted authorities when he discovered the memo among paperwork from O’Connor.

Britain’s Foreign Office said Keogh is currently suspended pending the outcome of the case.

Both defendants deny offences under the Official Secrets Act. Keogh denies two charges of making a damaging disclosure of part of a government document. O’Connor denies two similar charges.
    - Sapa-AP

    Now, here is the riddle:

Why are these guys being put on trial if the document, according to Bush and Blaire is not real?

Isn’t that like being charged with having a concealed weapon and having that weapon be made out of soap?

  31. Dogjudge Says:

So tomorrow Gonzo goes in front of Congress and tells them, “See I told you we were getting rid of the bad AGs for a reason. Look we just got a bad old Republican.”

  32. bobby Says:

FWIW, today is the 65th anniversary of the “Doolittle Raid”. Coincidence?

  33. KRank Says:

Where is Jake to defend this?

    Comment by Zep Tepi — April 18, 2007 @ 4:37 pm

I wonder if Jake got fired by Unka Karl for getting pummeled so badly earlier this week. He’s tried coming back under a couple of different names, but it’s clear his heart isn’t in it. Maybe the Culture of Corruption has finally beaten him down.

  34. veritas Says:

Ring…Ring….Ring….Kevin Ring’s running from the feds now, too. Guess he’ll also be investigated?

  37. Eskwaya Says:

The whistle was blown on Representative Doolittle back in summer 2005. That’s almost two years that we’ve known he was probably up to no good. What did the FBI think they were gonna find in his house two years later? Do they think he was just going to sit on incriminating evidence for two years, hoping?

  38. Tom Hilton Says:

Six months too late to do any real good…but better late than never.

    Is’nt Abramoff a convicted felon?
He’s not just disgraced. Or am I mixing him up with libby?
So many moral problems ina party that was going to show America how to act!!!!

I wonder what they will find out now about why Carole Lam was fired?
Would be interesting if it was because she was getting to close to Doolittle and the White House.
Mayb things will take care of themselves and Impeachment will not be nec=essary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  41. m Says:

I think they’re just looking to delete the sent copies of Karl’s emails.

  44. chimpeach Says:

First it was Cunningham, then Ney. Doolittle will probably get indicted soon. And, next after him will probably be Lewis. I wish they’d hurry up and convict DeLay so he doesn’t get to flap his lips on CNN, MSNBC, and Fox Noise anymore.

  45. Private Citizen Says:

I wonder which U.S. Attorney will get sacked for heading up this investigation or pursuing it…

  51. Matt Says:

I can’t believe it took until post #43 for someone to point out that that lobbyist’s wife is smokin’ hot.

    Come on, people. Pay attention!

  52. Bruce in Alta California Says:

As a lifelong CA-04 resident I am thrilled by this turn of events. Perhaps justice will prevail. Boss Doolittle has stocked and supported his own cadre of supervisors, mayors and councilmen through-out CA-04.

Here’s to the first sign of crumbling of Boss Doolittle’s empire

  53. Devil's Advocate Says:

Another Republican scumbag headed for the slammer!

  54. Verifiable Says:

Wonder if ol’ pal Richard Pombo will take him in … Now there’s someone that should be glad he wasn’t re-elected.

In the family employment line of this story, someone ought to take a look at why Richard Alcalde hired young rookie Dan Feliz to represent some of Alcalde’s Indian gaming clients? Feliz is the son of longtime Doolittle political aide John Feliz. John Feliz also managed Pombo’s campaigns and “raised” money for them both but he never contributed or registered as a lobbyist.

  55. Prantha Trivedi Says:

Doo-Little has had six (6) months, that’s 180 days, to clean out all evidence of his wrongdoing. I am certain that he even REPLACED the hard drive on his computer. The FBI will find absolutely nothing in his home. Not one thing.

  56. j.j Says:

wait…..weren’t Democrats and the left wingers completly outraged when the FBI raided Representative William Jefferson’s house in New Orleans? Now the left rejoices at the FBI going into this Rep. house? sniff, sniff….I think I smell typical liberal and Democrat hypocrisy…..

  57. William Jefferson Says:

Let’s hope that they didn’t find $90,000 in his freezer. Because if they did, nothing will happen to him and he’d get appointed to the Budget Committee.

  58. ChingarraSan Says:

References of Rep. Jefferson have no place here. If He’s found guilty, He’ll be prosecuted. Using his name to try to offset what is going on with Doolittle is absurd. Whoever wants to keep score of which party has more crooks, look no farther than the numbers from each party who are being investigated or indicted. You’ll find that Republicans are dropping like fly’s every day. I think the numbers would be even higher, had there been the level of oversight in the last six years, that there is today. It’s pretty obvious that the corruption in this Republican administration starts from the top down. This administration is guilty of so many crimes, that just what is known to the public, is enough to put them all away for life.

  59. Jimmy the Geek Says:

The sad fact of the matter is that if there had been active oversight then most of these illegal acts would not have happened.

I don’t even think this is a lib verses con thing, I think either party will become corrupt at a much higher rate if they think nobody is watching and they hold all the cards.

While the cat is away, the mice will play.

Currently what happens if a party is voted out in congress is that they have absolutely no power. What I want to see is the outsted party in the House and Senate being able to hold hearings and subpoena witnesses. They need to have their own judge and special prosecutor to enforce these subpoenas, to enforce contempt of congress charges for failing to appear, and to investigate lying under oath.

I think that if there had been this oversight then many of the abuses of the past 6 years would not have happened.

  60. D Casolaro Says:

Just remember, the justice department is controlled by neocons. When they go after a republican it is generally because he has broken ranks, not because of his unethical behavior. They all behave unethically. They only get caught when they cross the party leadership.

  61. Rufus Says:

As best I recall, Jefferson took the money but did nothing in return. Looks like the FBI contributed $100K to Jefferson’s reelection campaign.
