“In this case, the idea that we are going to be involved in a ‘Long War,’ at the current level of operations, is not likely and unhelpful,” Centcom spokesman Lt. Col. Matt McLaughlin said. “We remain committed to our friends and allies in the region and to countering al-Qaida inspired extremism where it manifests itself. But one of our goals is to lessen our presence over time, [and] we didn’t feel that the term ‘Long War’ captured this nuance.”
Articles of Impeachment To Be Filed On Cheney
Looks like he’s reached his boiling point.
Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), the most liberal of the Democratic presidential candidates in the primary field, declared in a letter sent to his Democratic House colleagues this morning that he plans to file articles of impeachment against Vice President Dick Cheney.
Kucinich has made ending the war in Iraq the central theme of his campaign. He has even taken aim at the leading Democratic presidential candidates in the field for their votes on authorizing the war.
Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution gives Congress the authority to impeach the president, vice president and “all civil Officers of the United States” for “treason, bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.”
Sources tell the Sleuth that in light of the mass killings at Virginia Tech Monday, Kucinich’s impeachment plans have been put on hold. There will be no action this week, they say.,,,,,
April 19th, 2007 at 3:46 pmLt. Col. Matt McLaughlin:
I would like to inform you that your bosses in the WH aren’t big on nuances. That would be beyond their intellectual capacity.
April 19th, 2007 at 3:48 pmWhat always surprises me is that Liberals are supposed to be horrible for the military, and yet here we are, trying to do exactly what the military experts keep asking for.
And Conservatives, supposed to be pro-military, continue to promote policies that are destroying our military readiness.
April 19th, 2007 at 3:57 pmThe republicans learned form the best. The Nazis. Tell a lie enough times and people believe it.
The same thing is true for the “liberal media.” That isn’t true, it is a lie.
The good news is that more moderates are waking up to the lies. The only ones left on the right are the whackos.
April 19th, 2007 at 4:04 pmraynman; you can apply that to almost every facet of thinking; family values etc. I live in Utah, which is the most Republican state int he country, and I’m amazed at how people here blindly follow these ‘leaders’, when the last people they have in mind is the middle class. Oh well.
April 19th, 2007 at 4:06 pmWhy does Lt. Col. McLaughlin want America to lose in Iraq?
He’s giving aid and comfort to the enemy by even mentioning that the Us might, one day, withdraw from Iraq.
Why does he hate America?
Why does he hate the troops?
/sarcasm off

April 19th, 2007 at 4:10 pmUtah isn’t a state…it’s a THEOCRACY!
April 19th, 2007 at 4:21 pmSo the phrase, “Long War,” has now been thrown out. Following throwing out the phrase, “War on Terror” by the British. Of course, the Bush administration tried back in the summer of 2005 to get rid of that phrase and substitute the “global struggle against violent extremism.”
In introducing the new language, administration officials had suggested that the change reflected an evolution in the president’s thinking nearly four years after the Sept. 11 attacks and had been adopted after discussions among Mr. Bush’s senior advisers that began in January.
The new slogan quickly become grist for late-night comics and drew news coverage that linked it with the emergence of a broad new approach to defining and attacking the problem of Islamic extremism through diplomacy and efforts to build closer ties to moderate Muslims, as well as through military action.
Shortly, however, Bush decided he didn’t like the new term. After all, he’s a war president…not a diplomat.

April 19th, 2007 at 4:29 pmCall it what you want, but does anyone think the war on terrorism is going to be over anytime soon? This war will be multi generational. I would call it a long war, but I am open to calling it whatever they want.
April 19th, 2007 at 4:30 pmNo long war…What are those profiteering from the Congressional Military Industrial Complex ever to do?
And why isn’t the 109th Congress being investigated over their refusal to do proper OVERSIGHT on this obviously criminal and obviously criminal during both terms administration?

I’ve got an ear glued to NPR radio, which has broadcast the entire hearing.
April 19th, 2007 at 4:35 pmThere is a lot going down, I’m going to give TP the benefit of the doubt that they are going to review and write up the day after all has been said. Seems to be maybe another 20 minutes or so………..

But Roger_Roger, terrorists like you are always part of the landscape. Declaring *war* on a concept is as st*pid as you are, however.
This war will be multi generational. Comment by Roger_Roger — April 19, 2007 @ 4:30 pm
Which *war* is that, the war on your st*pidity, or the war on your hatred, or the war on your ignorance and greed? multi-generational indeed! Because once a child is raise, and uneducated the way you are, then that generation (person) is lost.
I would call it a long war, but I am open to calling it whatever they want. Comment by Roger_Roger — April 19, 2007 @ 4:30 pm
Roger_Roger’s st*pid misconception of the world? That’s a good start Jake*ss.
April 19th, 2007 at 4:41 pmRoger_Roger aka Gregor
What war???? The rest of the world calls it what it is – a US led invasion.
“war on terrorism”…. Who is the real terrorist? Wake up….
You need to turn off Rush, Insanity, Weener or what ever lying right wing corporate owned media show you listen to…
Why aren’t your over in Iraq? It is beyond my comprehension as to why you trolls, who so seem to enjoy all the mayhem and carnage over lies, and yet you do not enlist and go fight your so called war.
April 19th, 2007 at 4:47 pmThe key part of that statement is ‘long war at the current level of operations’.
That means that in order for us to effectively prosecute any type of campaign against terrorism, we have to get out of Iraq’s civil war and recommit our military resources to where it belongs.
It’s so simple even an idiot could under…..
nevermind
April 19th, 2007 at 4:48 pm> And Conservatives, supposed to be pro-military, continue to promote > policies that are destroying our military readiness.
That’s because the idea of “limitless resources to do what I want, as long as the will is steely enough” is one of the widespread fallacies of wingnuts (I would not say ‘conservatives’ here). Even in the most lousy deadend leaderbunker, the flame is kept alive.
April 19th, 2007 at 4:51 pm#17 I completely forgot. This crowd believes that terrorist ideals are a valid way of life that we should honor, not fight against. Your right, most people of this world actually are against freedom and democracy. Fighting against the ideals of terrorists like women’s rights is wrong as you say. We should allow them to treat women like animals, destroy modern society, and kill any non muslim. Afterall, we should respect their ideals as they are equal to ours.
April 19th, 2007 at 4:54 pm#18 I am retired from the military and I served in Desert Storm (11B was my postion). Where did you serve and what was your position?
April 19th, 2007 at 4:55 pmBush has already spent $340 billion on Iraq War thus far, but who got the profit? People in Iraq? They are shouting loud that “American, get out!†while Bush wants to send 15,000 more troops. That’s why we can’t support Bush and his supporters.
April 19th, 2007 at 4:56 pmIt is clear that the military solution is not working. Why don’t they try to bring peace by sending humanitarian aid instead of troops and weapons?
According to The Borgen Project, it only costs $19 billion to end global poverty and hunger. Compare to the amount Bush spent on his “War on Terror”, this annual cost is very little.
I hope our next political leader will make a commitment to the UN Millennium Development Goals which will end global poverty and starvation. It is really not so hard if we are truly willing to make a change and bring peace to the world not by military solution but by humanitarian aid.
The surge was supposed to give the Maliki Govt. the Breathing Space to forge a political solution. Well… there’s not much breathing space, and NO progress on the issues that Must be resolved. … Oil revenue sharing, re Bathification, and ammending the constitution. The wheels are coming off the whole Iraq misadventure….the military Knows it…and the trial baloons are flying.
April 19th, 2007 at 4:58 pmThe conduct of the occupation didn’t “captured this nuance” either.
April 19th, 2007 at 5:08 pmThe toppling of Saddam Hussein…evil tyrant that he was… did MORE to spread Islamist Terrorist Influence like al Qaeda throughout the Arab Middle East, than anything else I can think of. Tell me Roger.Roger… do you think Bin Laden Wanted us to Invade Iraq????

Good news….Bush’s military will take you again…. The age level has been increased many times, you can now be a convicted criminal, have drug problems and be mentally ill. So again, why are you not signing up to fight your so called war in Iraq?

Conserv666atives arent really pro-military, they are pro-defense contractor. The kid that enlists because he has no options in this country to make a decent wage the Conserv666atives could care less about.

April 19th, 2007 at 5:39 pmApril 19: Controversy was raging in Australia today over an assertion by Britain’s high commissioner that the invasion of Iraq was not part of the ‘war on terror’.
The only thing “long” the boys in the WH can get thier hands on is this war, and Jeffy Gannon’s tool.

It’ll last only as long as the Chinese keep buying our treasury bills to pay for the war! Because the United States is flat broke!

Would that be $19B per year?
But to stay on topic, I was happy to hear the words above coming from the mouth of Centcom’s spokesman. Makes for some cautious optimism.. very cautious.

Not by a long shot.
April 19th, 2007 at 8:43 pmRodger you twit, “terrorism” is not a political idealogy. It called an “asymetrical conflict”…
let me ask you something…
I’m going to describe some pretty atrocious acts to you. im not going to tell you who did them or to whom. then im going to ask you if you consider those acts to be terrorism. if you say yes, and it turns out that the people who commited those acts were knowingly funded by the Us Government, do you promise to STFU about “terror” “terror” “terror”?
Guys, you can help me out on this. Dig up some documented massacres/violence against civilians perpetrated by someone who the Us government knowingly funded. then strip the description of any identifying names or places.. then ask Rodger.. “do you consider this to be terrorism”?
honestly, the only kind of “terror” rodger thinks is bad is the type commited by people who arent our allies.. im not saying the us is the source of all evil in an otherwise pure world.. im just saying that in truth, there are no good guys.. merely a collection of national self interests, some which align more closely with our own than others..
