Gonzales reviews are in: ‘Like clubbing a baby seal.’»

CNN’s Dana Bash:

Loyal Republican after loyal Republican in this hearing room, and more specifically, in private to CNN today have made it clear that they are frankly flabbergasted by how poorly they think the attorney general has done in this hearing. … During the lunch break, in private, several very loyal Republicans made it clear to CNN that they were really dripping with disappointment.

CNN’s Suzanne Malveaux:

[White House officials] believe Gonzales is in trouble. … Two senior White House aides here describing the situation, Gonzales’ testimony, as “going down in flames.” That he was “not doing himself any favors.” One prominent Republican describing watching his testimony as “clubbing a baby seal.”

    good job gonzo !

  3. Chris L Says:

No offense intended to baby seals.

  4. Raven Says:

    a shark in a baby seals skin……………

  5. Shane Says:

And still Bush hasn’t told him to resign. Gonzo must have some good stuff on Preznumnutz.

  6. Spudge_Boy Says:

WOf course a Republican would compare it with clubbing a baby seal. He could have said “It’s like running head on into a wall” or a million other things, but had to go with killing an innocent animal.

    Typical.

  7. Buck Fush Says:

    Bloody that baby seal baby.

  8. Badmoodman Says:

Fredo isn’t a baby seal - - he’s more like the remora that attached itself to the shark-like Bush.

  9. dejavu Says:

it’s quite obvious the GOP strategy is to cauterize this wound by sacrificing the AG. the real key will be when Rove & Meiers testify.

  10. Republicans are the Fear and Smear Party Says:

When will the Attorney General stops acting like a baby seal and start demonstrating some accountability for his actions?

  11. pgw Says:

“And still Bush hasn’t told him to resign. Gonzo must have some good stuff on Preznumnutz.”

like the time he was so drunk that a pretzel almost made cheney the president

  12. Eric the Blue Says:

An asshat in baby seal skin.
    Stop the Lies.

    Dana Bash is SO hot

  14. dejavu Says:

“And still Bush hasn’t told him to resign. Gonzo must have some good stuff on Preznumnutz.”

The problem is that the next AG will have to be approved by congress. They’re going to have a hell of a time getting a “loyal bushie” through that process. And they didn’t manage to extend the Patriot Act to cover that circumstance yet…

  15. Tom Says:

And still Bush hasn’t told him to resign. Gonzo must have some good stuff on Preznumnutz.

GDumbya is still awaiting instructions from the real president, Darth Cheney.

Darth will likely drop the hammer on Gonzo this evening. After all, he is sweating bullets over the possible production of those 5 million RNC email messages and the revelation of the operations of his shadow government.

  16. Raven Says:

    Patrick Fitzgerald for Attorney General

  17. nitro Says:

    Typical Bushite doctrine…
Stay on course dude..don’t give in, no matter the consequences…..
These “people” should be expelled of planet earth….

  18. kelso Says:

Clubbing baby seals.. isn’t that one of the things Rove said he gets off on just before his MC Rove performance?

  19. Ethan Says:

Can the senate revoke their confirmation of the AG? What power do they really have over him?

  20. n69n Says:

i thought he was gonna cry during Schumer.

  21. Crump's Brother Says:

Why didn’t he just get up, flip off the committee and go back to work. The knuckle draggers would have rallied, and Bush wouldn’t fire him. That’s right up The Decider’s alley.

  22. SouthWest Bob Says:

Gonzo will not resign. . . . this is a nice distraction from the email mess, Iraq and zillions of borrowed dollars going to cheney/bush pals. The only question. . .can they make it last until 2009?

  23. Angry One Says:

In his testimony regarding the U.S. attorneys scandal before the Senate Judiciary Committee this morning, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales once again offered his Sgt. Schultz defense. Like the bumbling German guard in Hogan’s Heroes, Gonzales essentially claimed “I know nothing, nothing!” Sadly, his own recent statements show that while Gonzales may be similarly stupid, he is not ignorant.

The Attorney General’s recent op-eds show his dilemma. While claiming to have played no role in the evaluation of the fired attorneys, Gonzales claimed they lost his confidence nonetheless…

    For the details, see:
    “Gonzales’ Sgt. Schultz Defense.”

For the latest news, document dumps, email archives, hearing transcripts and other essential materials in the firings of U.S. attorneys, see:
    “The U.S. Attorney Scandal Documents.”

  24. raynman Says:

It would be interesting if someone on the Committee asked the AG what he would do, as Attorney General of the United States, if an arm of the Administration violated the Hatch Act by wilfully withholding and destroying documents in the form of e-mails.

  25. pgw Says:

“Gonzo will not resign. . .can they make it last until 2009?”

if they did this every week in the form of a reality tv show, it could definitely last until 2009.

  26. hellinabucket Says:

  27. mark Says:

    Comment by Tom

Actually the 5 million missing emails are from the WH servers. No telling how many RNC emails there are.

  28. ValiantVenusGrewFromUranus Says:

Like clubbing baby seals? Sounds like a session with Roger_Roger, michael and the rest! Poor st*pid little pieces of sh*t though, don’t even know they’re getting clubbed - just like Gonzo!

  29. AngelOfConfusion Says:

And yet look at the coverage cnn is giving this on the web… just two sidebar links..

GOP senator urges Gonzales to quit
    and
Navarrette: No sign of fairness for Gonzales

Navarrette paints this as all a witchhunt by the mean Dems and the media and blasts “weak-kneed conservatives” for “giving in”

    article here: http://www.cnn.com/ 2007/ US/ 04/ 19/ navarrette/ index.html

    what is with cnn ?

Clubbing baby seals.. isn’t that one of the things Rove said he gets off on just before his MC Rove performance?

    Comment by kelso — April 19, 2007 @ 4:46 pm

No, that was “I like to pull the heads off small animals.” and I like to go hunting.

  31. Armando Gomez Says:

The forecast for Gonzales is heavy on the storm front, light on clear skies any time soon. In other words, he’s done for—except for GWB. GWB will hang on to Gonzales for as long as he can, just like he did with Remsfeld. And we all know how that ended, right? The question isn’t that Gonzales screw-up, he’s been that since Texas with GWB, this duet from the American wet dream has been given one pass after another for years. The American people, not the justice dept or Congress, will have the final say to removed Gonzales. As it was with Remsfeld, after Democrats won Congress so it will be Gonzales. It’s the American people who put Gonzales up and it will them who will bring him down. In short, it isn’t Congress or GWB who will have the last word, it will be us. It up to us, no ifs, ands, or buts.

  32. Badmoodman Says:

#16: Patrick Fitzgerald for Attorney General - - According to BushCo, Fitz doesn’t measure up as a U.S. Attorney. He’s not sycophant-ish.

  33. SickOfTheGOPLies Says:

Baby seals are innocent creatures; Gonzales is not a baby and is no innocent. Comparing this hearing - WHICH IS LONG OVERDUE AND WELL JUSTIFIED - to the barbaric slaughter of baby seals is hyperbole at its worst.

Republicans make me sick. What a bunch of crybabies.

  34. Raven Says:

I am just dreaming of a fair and balanced judicial system, Badmoodman….:)

  35. butch Says:

gonzalez will be gone by 11pm frinight. thats the way they roll under gwb43.

  36. Jake-obin Says:

I think Gonzo might have been afraid of the “peanut gallery” they didn’t seem like his biggest fans.

When he was finished they were singing, nahnahnahnah, nahnahnahnah, heyhey, goodbye.

If he’d flipped off the committee he might have had said appendage put some place undesirable.

  38. whiteyfresh Says:

    DRIPPING WITH DISAPPOINTMENT?
    sounds like Gonzo’s a bad flavor of ice cream…;

  39. mimsi Says:

With Gonzales’ level of confidence and arrogance, and Bush’s refusal to fire him, Gonzales must have something on Bush from his past that gives him the confidence that he won’t be booted. I can’t believe he is still there..

  40. David K. Says:

The next nominee for AG will be Senator Hatch, since good old boys will go for him… and it’s a nice way to finish out his public service - unless nominated for next SCOTUS vanancy, then he’s in for 15 more years….

  41. ForTruth Says:

Rove said he likes to pull the tops off of small animals.

    Get it straight people.

As for baby seals, they do grow up to be penguin killers.

  44. Raven Says:

and a started whoppin’ on the head
of my favorite pet baby seal

    with a lead filled snowshoe………….

  45. KRank Says:

If Bush (or, more likely, Darth Cheney) were smart OR concerned with the view of the American public OR interested in restoring faith in the rule of law, he’d appoint someone like John Danforth as AG.

My guess is he won’t. He’s never showed anything but petulance and stubbornness before when he feels under attack, and he’s got too many bodies buried too close to the surface to risk appointing someone who will actually serve the people and the Constitution. No, he needs another crony. But preferably one smarter than Abu G this time.

  47. raynman Says:

  48. whiteyfresh Says:

    GSD-

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAAHA!

that sounds almost as fun as clubbing baby seals…

  49. salmo clarky Says:

Gonzales knows where George hides the blow.

  50. VerbalKint Says:

Yikes, that baby seal metaphor is gruesome.

  51. KRank Says:

As an American, I, for one, am grateful that the AG spent the last month intensively preparing for this beating instead of screwing up the Consitution any more than he has already.

I’d say that’s money well spent, under the circumstances.

Oh, please do it, George. Go ahead. I dare ya. I double-dog dare ya. Karl says it would be a good idea. He says it could get your approval ratings back up in the upper thirties.

  53. auel Says:

Gonzales needs to be asked about the case against the perverts who took child inmates of Texas Correctional Institute repeatedly for sex parties and why gonzales stopped the prosecution of these cases - gonzo should not be allowed the lie that he cares about children and pornography.

The MSM has barely focused on this and it should be
questioned during gonzales “reconfirmation” hearing. This question needs to be asked now……..

Nora cuts to MSNBC’s Chris Jansing… (…says well get to Alberto in just a moment…

..but first Dan Abrams has switched us back to a report from West Virginia… too bad…
…Now we are onto the weather…. Dan Abrams still hasn’t been able to squeeze in the Gonzales hearing… too bad…

Oh now we are in Pittsburg with a fake bomb scare…

  55. Saywho Says:

Bomb, bomb, bomb…IRAN is the other Freudian slip of the day; if acted on this will get us a date with Russia & China & (Insert any country that also hates us here).

We watch the Senate and see a whole bunch of “nothing is going to change” while the plans to expand into Iran are solidifying.

Anc CNN only has eyes for VT. Can’t tear themselves away from the tragedy for a second.

  59. swordsbane Says:

It’s funny to demand Gonzo’s resignation when we all know who’s lap-dog he is. If all of this is evidence of anything it is that BUSH should resign.

I think it’s the other way around. If Gonzo resigns, HIS troubles are over. The longer he sticks around, the worse it is for him. Bush must have something on Gonzo to keep him in the crosshairs so long. That’s why Bush isn’t saying anything about it. He’s hiding behind the distraction. While the country is focused on this, what is Bush doing in the background where we can’t see?

  60. Namtillaku Says:

    Saywho;

Therein lies the problem, congress isn’t doing nearly enough to truncate this dysfunctional administration. So, you can impeach a president for lying about a blow job, but being responsible for 3,500 needless american deaths? No. For effectively giving up trying to capture or kill OBL? No, not that either. How about all of our tax dollars going to Cheney/Halliburton AND allowing them to move to Dubai. Not that either.

  72. Jackie Rawlings Says:

We now know the Attorney General is dumb and not qualified. He was appointed to sign what he’s told to sign. The fired lawyers are qualified for Gonzales’s job. Now we know that the DOJ has a dumbest leader and even when studying he can’t pass the test. Gonzales did as he was told and signed what was given to him. Now if Bush keeps him in the job, all the convicted criminals can file appeals as lying under oath is now legal.
If the Attorney General can lie under oath and it’s not a crime, look for Libby to add that to his appeal. Nice move by the Administration that supports morals and family values. Now kids can lie and say ” Mom lying is ok now because the President and the Attorney General lie all the time”.
