Those men were given exemptions from the draft. If you care to check it out, once the war was over he (O'Reilly) quit teaching, going back to college to seek a degree in another sector. Also, if you will notice he makes frequent notices that he has been in "combat situation". He covered a couple of encounters as a reporter but hints to his audience that he was a soldier not just a reporter..
