Reid: Iraq war is lost…if we follow Bush’s course.»

The AP reports:

The war in Iraq “is lost” and a US troop surge is failing to bring peace to the country, the leader of the Democratic majority in the US Congress, Harry Reid, said Thursday.

“I believe … that this war is lost, and this surge is not accomplishing anything, as is shown by the extreme violence in Iraq this week,” Reid told journalists.

Reid said he had delivered the same message to US President George W. Bush on Wednesday, when the US president met with senior lawmakers to discuss how to end a standoff over an emergency war funding bill.

“I know I was the odd guy out at the White House, but I told him at least what he needed to hear … I believe the war at this stage can only be won diplomatically, politically and economically.”

UPDATE: The AP changes its headline. It now reads “Reid: U.S. Can’t Win Iraq Military Fight.” Sen. Reid issued the following statement, “And as long as we follow the President’s path in Iraq, the war is lost. But there is still a chance to change course — and we must change course.”

  3. Redneck, Redstate Says:

6 more months you sissy pants.

  4. Spudge_Boy Says:

Well duh. It’s about time the Democratic leaders caught up with their constituents.

  5. Badmoodman Says:

Just give it six more months…c’mon!

  6. powkat Says:

Harry reminds me of my grandfather - he was quiet, firm, polite. But you didn’t want to cross him.

  7. Fred Says:

    Lost cause anyway.

There’s nothing to gain there. Never was.
Bush has made it worse over there. He can’t clean up his own damn mess and we’ll always have to live with that. More time in Iraq won’t solve anything, cost us money and lives that could be put to use for better things.

    Time to move on.

  8. hellinabucket Says:

Sobering news for a dry drunk.

  9. chris Johns Says:

I suggest people, everyone, including our leaders open up an encyclopedia and ready the history of iraq, especially that last 200 years and then say with a straight face, all we need is another 6 month or even 6 years, no one in their right mind could conclude that after reading the history of Iraq.

Give us another 100 years, maybe, in the meantime, pack up Britney, Barbie, Pespi and pull the plug on MTV Iraq, this was never a war. Open your eyes

  10. JTitor Says:

    No new NEWS there!

  11. Abby Says:

The war was lost over 3 years ago when we stole their money, protected that oil and told the Iraqis to go screw themselves.

What we have yet to decide is the magnitude of the defeat we want for ourselves. The longer we stay, the bigger the eventual defeat.

“No invader in history ever won a prolonged war away from home” - history of war 101.

  12. johnny plumber Says:

Has anyone else noticed that the neo-cons and their media puppets are doing everything the can to throw the Dems off-focus regarding the investigation(s) of this corrupt administration and their corrupt war? Gun control, immigration, women’s reproductive rights, you name it. Fortunately, the good Mr. Reid and other Dem leaders are not rising to the bait. You go, Harry; stay focused and get these criminal bastards.

  13. raynman Says:

    Keep beating that dead horse

    it might move!!

  14. Barneyg2000 Says:

The source is the AFP and not AP.

So Harry had a press conference and the only press that showed up were the French?

I sure would like another confirming source.

We CAN’T lose - we already won a long time ago - duh.

If I was to parody Jake or firehead I would say:

    Easy squeezy.

  17. SKdeA Says:

    ForTruth, that was spot on!
Gives me the chills. Between you and RoboTroll 2000, who needs real trolls?

  18. j.j. Says:

    well, well, no surprise there…

Democrats are cowards and love raising the white flag to our enemies.

how sad that such a coward is leader of our Senate. What complete embarrasment he is.

and look at his tools follow him, how truly sad.

  19. j.j. Says:

the terrorists in Iraq must be celebrating today, how sad that Reid and the rest of the Democrats take the side of America’s enemies.

Reid is only repeating what the terrorist are saying and look at you tools agree with Reid and the terrorist.

I am embarrassed for you guys.

  20. j.j. Says:

    can an honest liberal answer…….

so what happens after we leave Iraq and Iraq becomes a humanitarian rights disaster?

will liberals demand that troops be sent back into Iraq to stop the human right abuses like they are demanding that our troops go into Darfur?

all you liberals talk about is leaving Iraq, great, our troops leave Iraq and then what….how about if you are wrong and Iraq becomes a complete human rights disaster…then what?

  21. chris Johns Says:

To the guy that said we should grow beard and carry Quarans, do you realize we, americans sent our son and daughters to die to give them the right to force beards and ban dancing, Saddam was holding down the Islamists with a secular goverment,

We helped fight for them to have the freedom to take away the freedom of others, this is a fact.

Freedom has a different meaning in every culture and country, our malls and credit card debt isnt the freedom everyone wants.

We brought the wrong kind of freedom to the wrong place and sadly the wrong people are paying the price, they still remain our heros none the less.

  22. pgw Says:

“how sad that such a coward is leader of our Senate. What complete embarrasment he is.”

    he’s better than bush:

“…Osama bin Laden, whose key demand throughout on-going al-Qaeda attacks was that the US must withdraw its forces from the region. U.S. officials transferred control of portions of Prince Sultan Air Base to Saudi officials at a ceremony on 26 August 2003. The base had been home to about 60,000 US personnel over time. Roughly 4,500 US troops were redeployed from Saudi Arabia to Qatar, leaving about 500 in Saudi Arabia”

  23. Roger_Roger Says:

It is very creepy to hear this from a man that doesn’t also provide a solution on how to win. Does he feel that we can walk away a loser and have that somehow benefit us or the Iraqi people? Does he feel that if we leave a loser the Iraqi people will benefit? More then anything, this Liberal hate America, we are losers additude worries me for the sake of the Iraqi people. Those people are relying on us to help them achieve the freedom and democracy they so much deserve. With folks like Reid deciding we shouldn’t help them win this war, it appears the poor folks of Iraq are doomed to a life of dictatorship and terrorist leaders. Moreover, the future of America looks rough considering the Dems are eager to turn Iraq over to the terrorists. On top of the Dems wish to hand Iraq over to Terrorists, they are also eager to see Iran become a nuclear threat. How can we as Americans allow this to continue unless the will of America is truly broken?

Are we as a people really ready to turn Iraq over to terrorists and allow Iran to destroy Isreal and attack us with nuclear weapons? Honestly????

  24. chris Johns Says:

OH, and anyone who thinks leaving Iraq will hurt america? are you serious, mr? Please explain one thing to me? SPAIN, its that county who cut and ran, why because the people didnt want it, and they voted those loser leaders out of office, and the Evil Osama recongized the people of Spain for their courage and they have had no further attacks.

    SPAIN people, FACT

Another fact, Al-quadi has an open invitation with the people of America, who the see as manipulated by Bush, we can end this anytime, they encouraged us to vote these guys out and do the right thing, we are responsible for the actions of our leaders and ignorance is not an excuse.

Lets take their offer, so “our mothers can sleep well at night”

  25. pgw Says:

“It is very creepy to hear this from a man that doesn’t also provide a solution on how to win.”

and yet i’d guess he’s spent more time speaking with military officers [you know, those guys the administration ignores because they aren’t towing the rhetorical line] about this situation than you have.

  26. Roger_Roger Says:

#24 So by your logic, we should obey OBL and do whatever he says? Great, make sure you treat your wife and all women just like they want you too. So much for women’s rights (Better hurry up and get Pelosi out of office as that isn’t allowed in OBL’s world).

  27. david Says:

Wars can really only be won diplomatically, politically, and economically. That’s why occupations only bleed the victor to death and defeat.

Rumsfeld lost this war the moment he launched it because he had no plan for the Afterwar. It’s now war 24/7.

And humanitarian crisis. j.j, have another shot of bourbon and shut up. You are the humanitarian crisis! Iraqis are worse off under the Americans than they were under Saddam. And they want you OUT.

  28. chris Johns Says:

Iraq has been broken for 2000 years, the closest it was to fixed was during Saddams heavy handed secular rule, that included women and christians in his cabinet.

Iraq be a mess with or without us there, we did support sadam’s killing of 1 million iranians with chemical weapons after they tried to nationalize their oil industry.

  29. chris Johns Says:

I have a question, if the majority of American want out of Iraq, shouldnt we leave? isnt that Democracy? Those leaders are public servants that work “at the pleasure” of the american people. I am most other Americans are not finding this pleasurable, can we have a referendum?

  30. ValiantVenusGrewFromUranus Says:

#24 So by your logic, we should obey OBL and do whatever he says? Comment by Roger_Roger — April 19, 2007 @ 4:36 pm

Haven’t you heard? You’re already doing that. He says we should stay in Iraq, to create a recruiting tool for Al Qaeda. Poor little st*pid Roger, duped again by his Al Qaeda masters.

Great, make sure you treat your wife and all women just like they want you too. Comment by Roger_Roger — April 19, 2007 @ 4:36 pm

Spoken just like an Al Qaeda radical Islamist. Next thing you know, Roger will be calling for the wives to be in Burkas.

So much for women’s rights (Better hurry up and get Pelosi out of office as that isn’t allowed in OBL’s world). Comment by Roger_Roger — April 19, 2007 @ 4:36 pm

Says the wacko that wants Pelosi out of office. Poor little Roger, is a radical terrorist, and thinks he’s the good guy! Now that’s what we call Republican st*pid!

  31. pgw Says:

“#24 So by your logic, we should obey OBL and do whatever he says?”

  32. j.j. Says:

    David…

really, WWII was won through diplomacy and politics? wow! i take it you are NOT a historian, right?

  33. ForTruth Says:

    JJ,

Quit being a surrender monkey and such a pacifist weenie. Grow a pair and go shoot some people for your country.

  34. j.j. Says:

You know there is a reason why OBL said while Clinton was in power that the United States was a paper tiger…….because of “leaders” like Democratic Senator Harry Reid.

OBL and the terrorist of the world must be laughing and waiting that a Democratic President gets into power, they will have a field day with the USA, God help us all if a Democratic President wins the White House in 2008, God help us all.

  35. j.j. Says:

    ForTruth,

    why don’t you enlighten me…..

If we do leave Iraq and Iraq becomes a humanitarian rights disaster, will you be asking for the USA troops to go back in to stop the humanitarian disaster? will you?

You just like I would like the USA to take a leadership role in Darfur, right? or at least i am assuming that you care about human rights. So what happens if you liberals are 100% wrong and Iraq becomes a humanitarian disaster after we leave, will you join me and ask for troops to go back in to stop the mass graves, etc, etc?

or do you care more for Darfur people than you do for Iraqis?

will you answer or spew incoherent thoughts?

  36. pgw Says:

“…because of “leaders” like Democratic Senator Harry Reid…”

it wasn’t reid who pulled out all the u.s. troops stationed in saudi arabia, as per o.b.l.’s request…

  37. j.j. Says:

    Roger,

Liberals don’t care much about women’s right, if they did they would take a stand against radical Islam. They are all talk and use emotion to get people to join them.

This site along with many other liberal sites were 100% against the USA attacking Afghanistan after 9/11, they could careless that in Afghanistan women were killed for showing their face, for leaving their homes alone, for talking to a men, etc, etc.

Most liberals are either very poorly educated, or hypocrites.

  38. Juan C Says:

    Comment by j.j. — April 19, 2007 @ 4:50 pm

When exactly did the US occupy Germany?? Uhh, after the Russians got there!

It takes an idiot to compare WWII with the illegal ocupation of a starving, ruined for generations, third world country. Congrats.

  39. auel Says:

Go to Military Families Speak Out mfso - the Democrats have not been keeping their promise on ending this terrible war. Very good articles by activist parents of our soldiers who are being slaughtered daily for nothing.

Recently trolls are more stupid than before. *sigh*

When Tim McVeigh bombed a building killing hundreds of people including a lot of children, were you encouraging Afghanistan to attack the US for terrorism of white Christian freaks?

    Yep, we are hypocrites…go on.

  42. devin Says:

YEAH, YEAH, WE KNOW IT IS!!! GOT IT, NOW??!!

  43. j.j. Says:

    Juan C,

Tim McVeighh A Christian? typical liberal propaganda….you sound just like the VT mass murderer with your rant against Christinaity.

Juanito, hijito, the United States was not harboring the terorist master mind that took airplanes into buildings in Afghanistan.

so your logic is stupid, flawed and typical of an anti-ameircan communist.

    try something new….

but in other words what you are saying is that after 9/11 and after the USA asking the Taliban in Afghanistan to give up Bin Laden and they refusing the USA should have sat down with Bin Laden, held his hand and sang, “Cumbaya Allah, Cumbaya…” right?

do you not realize how much of a retard you sound like? and by comparing you to retards I am insulting retards.

  44. j.j. Says:

    Juanito,

it was one of your retarded liberal friends who claimed that all wars have been won through diplomacy and politics….

obviously you are too much of a hypocrite to attack those that agree with you when they f….ck up.

juanito, tu mama te esta llamando, es hora del almuerzo.

  45. katy Says:

    “…diplomatically, politically and economically.”

well… it must be… we have to fix the mess we made…

but NO MORE LIVES… ok?… NO. MORE. LIVES.

bring home those troops AND THE CONTRACTORS.
    .

  46. ForTruth Says:

    Actually JJ,

I care more about the future of our own country, and this war is pulling us down.

    JJ,

I can see you are trying to hold back the stuff you really want to call Juan. Just be yourself and let it out.

  47. t-mac Says:

    J.J.,

We created OBL. He’s the love child of Reagan and the CIA, and we’re creating another generation of terrorists. They want us there in Iraq as do the oil companies (easy targets and easy money). Do you not see that? And, by the way, Iraq is already a humanitarian disaster.

    t-mac

  48. J Says:

    j.j.

“will you answer or spew incoherent thoughts?”

The reality is, the Iraqi and American people want us to leave by an overwhelming majority. By last count, some time ago, the death toll was estimated at over 600,000 which, in my mind, more than already constitutes a humanitarian disaster caused by our presence.

    Roger Roger,

“It is very creepy to hear this from a man that doesn’t also provide a solution on how to win. ”

What’s far creepier is how you identify more with the guy who has yet to provide us with an actual reason for being there in the first place.

  49. Uncle Ho Says:

The Iraq war was lost the day it was started- by the USA.

  50. Uncle Ho Says:

jj-you call Democrats cowards. Just how many combat medals have Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Feith, Perle, Abrams, Abramoff, Rush Limpdick, Hastert, Lott, O’Reilly, Trannie Coulter have among them?

  51. Uncle Ho Says:

JJ- just how many brave Republicans shouting “Bring it on” from the safety of the White House or their radio studios won medals for bravery? For ever even serving in the military? Your silence is deafening.

  52. Uncle Ho Says:

sorry I can’t put all that on one post. my blockquote is not working.

  53. Ernest Says:

Democracy? a govern baser in military force is a Dictatorship, Where is the democracy in irak? there were less murders and raped woman in irak before US democracy arrived, ther were more security

  54. big papa Says:

    Comments by j.j

When the people realize the true damage your Fuhrer and his storm troopers have done…

…I hope the cowardly Democrats muster enough courage to commit one more act of patriotism…

…That act will be to use the Patriot Act to come after TRAITORS like your gods Bushiva and L’il Dick et al…

…and THEN come after inbred shit-fer-brains morons like YOU JJ…

…so keep that asault rifle handy…

  55. david Says:

j.j, have another drink of Republican courage. Of course WWII was won diplomatically, politically, and economically. It was called the Marshall Plan, the Nuremberg Trials, and the United Nations.

Trying reading Margaret McMillan’s Paris 1919 to learn how the West messed it all up at the end of the first World War. That’s when the whole trouble with the Middle East begins. And the injustice of the Peace is what gave birth to the Nazis.

j.j and roger-roger like to talk tough, but neo-con Republicans are cowards and chickenhawks to a man. There’s not one who would be willing to go into battle if he could get a deferment or redeployed to some cushy post. No, sirree.

You know nothing of History, j.j. And the historians have already pegged Bush as one of the three worst Presidents the US has ever had. Bush will go down as the man who squandered America’s Future. He’s the Last American Emperor.

  56. Dman Says:

    Have Courage,
We can win. We are winning. The only way to lose is to give up. Take heart. Our enemies are frightened. They are desperate for us to quit. That is the only way that the enemy can win. We are almost there. Victory is in our hands. Fight the good fight every moment.

  57. James Says:

the original story TP links to is AFP, NOT AP. So therefore they didn’t change their headline….

  58. Kate Henry Says:

“Lost cause anyway. There’s nothing to gain there. Never was.”

Of course there is something to gain there, at least in the eyes of the Bushies, neocons and Republics. What there is to gain is their oil. That’s the only reason why we went into Iraq and that is the only reason why we are still there. As soon as we are able to steal Iraq’s oil, we will being the fighting troops home.

I would love people like the idiot Dman to tell me exactly who the “enemy” is. And what “victory” is.

I weep for what we have become.
