Schumer: ‘We Will Get To The Bottom Of This While Bush Is Still President’

In advance of today’s hearings with Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) warned the White House that it cannot avoid congressional oversight by using executive privilege to run out the clock.

“When privilege has been claimed in these kinds of cases, it has taken months not years” to resolve, Schumer said at a press conference. “So those in the White House who think that they can somehow sort of outlast this, as the courts debate privilege, I think are mistaken. We will get to the bottom of this while President Bush is still president.” Watch it:

Transcript:

I would say this, that if you look at the case of privilege that the White House is making is remarkably flimsy, and in the past at least, when privilege has been claimed in these kinds of cases, it has taken months not years, so those in the White House who think that they can somehow sort of outlast this as the courts debate privilege I think are mistaken. We will get to the bottom of this while President Bush is still president.

Unless, of course, the abdication of King George da Turd comes first

  2. Kate Henry says:

SUBPOENA NOW! That is the only way this will be resolved. Subpoena Rover, Miers and all the others. Subpoena the RNC servers and confiscate them before they can wipe them clean (if they haven’t already done so). You won’t be fighting the fight as long as you try to negotiate with these jerks. Get a spine Democrats, whip out those subpoenas NOW.

  3. GO says:

    It’s on like Donkey Kong!

  4. The Fool says:

Unless the Supreme Court who handed him the presidency in the first place has anything to do with it.

    Oh shit, we’re fucked.

  5. Buck Fush says:

SUBPOENA IMPEACH INPRISON the republican party, the 21st Century mafia, they are all criminals (yes and that means you voters who are willfully ignorant to their crimes, you are criminals too)!!!

    Hating Repukes Daily

  6. Jay Randal says:

Sen. Schumer tends to bluster a lot, so he better do what he says or he will get voted out of office too.

  8. j.j says:

oh please, a made up scandal by the Democrats, pure revenge for what Republicans did to Clinton.

the Executive Branch had every right to fire these attorneys.

I guarantee everyone here that this will go no where.

You really haven’t been paying attention, have you. I’d love to help you get caught up on this thing, but you’ll just get spoiled if you don’t go out and learn some things on your own. Try using the Google.

We have heard lots of those guarantees…

    WMDs…

    Well get Osama…

All those that help the terrorists will pay.. (except Saudi Arabia)

Repubs will be in power forever…

    Libby will get off…

The Patriot Act wont be abused …oops except then it was…

You people have been wrong about 98% of the time… you should feel stupid STUPID by now.

  11. Shane says:

Republican voters, or ENABLERS if you will, are complicit in the destruction of our government. Instead of coming here and spewing hatefilled lies, they should be burying their heads in shame and watching their leaders squirm now that there is the required oversight.

  12. smafdy says:

Even if these hearings (and all of the others) go nowhrere, the electorate has finally realized what a mistake this presidency was. The next election will wash this scum down the drain while reminding us what a bad idea it is to pardon or forget the criminality of the perpetrators once they are out of power. Criminal prosecutions and hard time – can’t wait for that.

    Sure.

  14. j.j says:

    smafdy,

yeah, keep on dreaming….this is a sham, I would urge Liberals to look at the approval rating of Congress, it isn’t too much higher than that of the President’s approval rating.

democrats as always will shoot themselves on the foot. They are over reaching and making really stupid political moves.

Just like Republicans over reached and over played their cards while Clinton was in power, Democrats are doing the same now.

and if you are going to talk about criminals in the White House, my friend you might want to look into the Clinton White House, it holds the record for the most indicted members of any administrations in the history of Presidents.

or maybe you need to travel to cities control by Democrats like Chicago which is ran by a corrupt, mob tied Mayor, you know Richie boy……

or maybe the Governor of Illinois, a Democrat, who has been in one scandal after another.

or maybe William Jefferson, another Democrat, or maybe Hillary Clinton’s ex-fund raiser…..

corruption is prevelant in both parties, it is stupid and very partisan that anyone party has a monopoly in corruption.

what happens is that usually the party that is in power is caught with their pants down…..

and if you are going to talk about criminals in the White House, my friend you might want to look into the Clinton White House, it holds the record for the most indicted members of any administrations in the history of Presidents.

Even if that were true, it isn’t anymore.

corruption is prevelant in both parties, it is stupid and very partisan that anyone party has a monopoly in corruption.

The difference is that we want all corrupt politicians strung up. Republicans only want democrats held accountable.

And no, lying about a blow job isn’t the same as starting an illegal war.

  16. donotblameWblameClinton says:

“and if you are going to talk about criminals in the White House, my friend you might want to look into the Clinton White House, it holds the record for the most indicted members of any administrations in the history of Presidents”

there is that old chestnut again. assw!ipe. Clinton has been out of office for years!! Also MOST of the indictments were right wing thug overzealous. Very FEW convictions. You 30% are are hopless.

The attorney generals were removed because they did not play ball, it is obvious to the most non-partisan observers – even Repugs in the Senate are not convinced. so j.j go post on restate.org or somewhere else where lemings may buy what you are sellling. not here.

  17. Linda says:

Its already been proved as of today, the Justice department is corrupt right up to the Supreme Court. Who will decide these cases the friends of the president sitting as the Supreme Court? Where do you go from here when the Supreme Court has been taking over by people who will do anything to support this administration? How can we win?

  18. extrapol says:

Obey your conscience and take a knee, Mr. President.

That’s right, you should kneel before America and beg forgiveness.

Because it doesn’t make sense to run out the clock when you’re behind on the scoreboard.

  19. Lily says:

j-j, the real problem wasn’t the firings, but the subsequent appointments. Just a little problem regarding violations of the Constitution, and separation of powers.

  20. Political Orphan says:

The most infuriating thing about all that has happened since Bush took office is the fact that no matter what happens, no matter how outraged anyone gets – life just lumbers on steadily, business as usual. This administration needs to be run out on a rail, prosecuted, and publicly punished. But all that will happen is that the term will run out and they will all go on to the next thing, oblivious to what they’ve done and protected from the public eye for the rest of their lives. We’ll continue fuming on blogs and popping gaskets any time the subject is brought up, but nothing will actually happen. This is what our country does to its traitors.

  21. NoOneYouKnow says:

Uh, j.j., last time anyone checked the Reagan Administration still held the record for most indicted admin. members. Sure, the Dems are corrupt — take a look at Schumer’s handling of the Branch Davidian massacre — but the Repugs are way out in front now. And when we’re done with them, we can start getting rid of the slimy invertabrates in the Democratic Party.

  22. Douglas G. says:

Good G_d leave it alone. They all work at the pleasure of the president. If he says let em go, they go. If the attorney General says goodbye, it’s goodbye… AT WILL employement! See ya! Aloha, sianora! Hasta L’bye bye!

  23. sorbix says:

Sen. Schumer is a great man. I have watched him speak countless times on CSPAN and he is very sharp and well-spoken.

  24. DJFJr says:

I enjoy reading the “we are right and you are wrong”, no middle ground because to compromise is to show weakness, Demo/Repub mudslinging that goes on at each and every political website, like this one, on the net.
Get it through your stubborn, thick skulls, my fellow Americans, that neither political party represents your interests! President Clinton was/is a criminal, and everyone in his administration were criminals! Janet Reno stands out in my mind as the most notorious of the whole bunch, Ruby Ridge or Waco anyone? Or has that horror against AMERICANS been forgotten?
Good God! Where to begin with the crimes that Bush & Co. have committed against America, not to mention the rest of the world?! We will never know the whole truth of this, I’m sure.
If you are a multimillionaire, support the GOP because they truly represent your interests. If you depend on the Federal Government for food, shelter, transportation and a monthly check, then straight ticket Democrat voting is for you. As for the remaining 60-70% of Americans that earn less than $150k per year and didn’t inherit a boatload of $$, maybe there should be less bickering and more compromise to take back control of our government and our country while we still can.

“I may not agree with what you say, but I will fight to the death your right to say it!”
“If we do not stand together, we will surely hang together!”
“United we stand, but divided we will fall.”

With Fraternal Love & Respect to ALL of my fellow Americans!

  25. Frank Csorba says:

Too bad misguided idiots like Cho Seung-Hui can’t be guided to a more productive outlet. To all future mass murderers; Save the world, shoot a Republican.
