Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) to Gonzales:

By Nico Pitney on Apr 19th, 2007 at 3:28 pm

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) to Gonzales:»

You should resign.

COBURN: Mr. Attorney General, it’s my considered opinion that the exact same standards should be applied to you in how this was handled. It was handled incompetently, the communication was atrocious. It was inconsistent. It’s generous to say that there was misstatements, that’s a generous statement. And I believe you ought to suffer the consequences that these others have suffered, and I believe the best way to put this behind us is your resignation.

And the new AT of Minnesota too, whose professional staff all took demotions rather than work with her…

  3. raynman Says:

GONZALES: Excuse me, Senator, but can you clarify what you mean by consequences for my actions? That is a concept that is foreign to this administration.

  4. RNC RoboTroll 2000 Says:

He’s right! Gonzo should go *beep*

I mean it! This is crap *beep*

I can’t do this anymore *beep*

  5. David K. Says:

What is painfully apparent is that Alberto Gonzalez is hopelessly conflicted. He cannot serve both the White House and the citizens of this country with any hope of getting at the truth and having justice served by any valid definition. His discussions with the President, Harriet Myers, and Karl Rove are material. If he claims privilege, at least in my mind, it is prima facie evidence that he is still George’s attorney and not the people’s attorney.

  6. chimpeach Says:

I listened to Coburn and I was surprised. I despised the guy when he was running for that Senate seat, but he asked Gonzales exactly the question I would have. Why shouldn’t Gonzales be held to the same professional standards as the US Attorneys he had replaced? They weren’t even told that anyone was dissatisfied with their performance and they were booted. He’s been told what he’s done wrong several times over the past couple of months and he thinks he should get to stay on no matter how much of a f*ck up he is.

Coburn’s right. Get rid of him.

  7. lestatdelc Says:

Why does Coburn want the terorists to win?

    /snark

  8. RNC RoboTroll 2000 Says:

We apologize for any inconvenience. RNC RoboTroll 2000 is malfunctioning. We will be back to catapult the propaganda as soon as possible.

    Thank you.
    The RNC

  9. Coffins Draped with Flags Says:

I heard this questioning. Coburn was great. He kicked butt.

Feinstein is asking hard questions. Guess elections have consequences.

  10. Coffins Draped with Flags Says:

David K - guess it’s true… Gonzales cannot serve two masters.

  11. Nicollo MacPlato Says:

“Senator, After thoroughly reviewing my memory, to the best of my recollection, I do not recall”.

    John Mitchell - Watergate hearings

  12. hellinabucket Says:

It looks like the Republicans want Gonzo to be the sacrificial lamb before they go along with anything else the President wants.

  13. kelso Says:

Is the AG allowed to fire the US attourneys, or does that authorization have to come from the President himself? Sorry to ask ya’ll this, but…..

    I don’t recall,
    I don’t recall,
    I don’t recall,
    I don’t recall!

  14. Tobey Tall Says:

Articles of Impeachment To Be Filed On Cheney

Looks like he’s reached his boiling point.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), the most liberal of the Democratic presidential candidates in the primary field, declared in a letter sent to his Democratic House colleagues this morning that he plans to file articles of impeachment against Vice President Dick Cheney.

Kucinich has made ending the war in Iraq the central theme of his campaign. He has even taken aim at the leading Democratic presidential candidates in the field for their votes on authorizing the war.

Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution gives Congress the authority to impeach the president, vice president and “all civil Officers of the United States” for “treason, bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.”

Sources tell the Sleuth that in light of the mass killings at Virginia Tech Monday, Kucinich’s impeachment plans have been put on hold. There will be no action this week, they say.

  15. dono Says:

But if he resigns we might have to talk about the war…

  16. David K. Says:

    Whooosh!

The sound of air escaping from Fredo’s beautiful balloon….

  17. chimpeach Says:

Hatch is up again. Gee, Orrin, you could save some time by just reading Gonzales’ answers off of the script yourself.

  18. marcus robinson Says:

Have these senators forgotten who attacked us obn 9/11??

  19. Hector Garcia Says:

Unexpected help/cooperation coming from the republican side.

  20. Scott Says:

No, he should not resign. He should be fired. Resignation implies he had a choice.

Since he fired a number of people who actually had good performance reviews, he should be let go for the “heckuva job” he’s doing.

  21. David K. Says:

Hmmm, let’s see… thousands of emails got wiped away - by mistake…. and “memory fails me.”

‘Looks like this Administration has started “The Long Goodbye.”

  22. Spudge_Boy Says:

Have these senators forgotten who attacked us obn 9/11??

You are right, we should remind them that it was 15 Saudis and 4 from the UAE.

  23. SKdeA Says:

    No Iraqis.

  24. mima Says:

I was literally shocked by Mr. Coburn’s fairness and honesty. I had no idea that the man had any justice in his heart at all. I will be carefully watching him. I was very very impressed with him!!!

  25. Jim Wolf359 Says:

Yeah, I was impressed by Coburn as well. Gonzales had a really bad day today. He has no one to blame but himself. The man is a lying weasel.
Like Barbara Boxer said a few week ago, “Elections have consequences.” This is just the tip of the iceberg.

  27. Raven Says:

Sam? wake up dude, he’s long gone…….

  28. RedPretzel Says:

    Gonzales….what a sleazy little bastard.

If this is the best that America can offer, then we are truly doomed, and rightly so.

He’s right. And if now those of his party would be able to substitute the name of Bush (and Cheney) in the above description of behaviors that have consequences to be suffered, we could move along to impeachment and conviction of same.

  31. Bob Says:

Cool! An Oklahoma Senator with a brain! I haven’t seen that often enough lately.

  32. tom baker Says:

Too bad our Congress isn’t more like Taiwan’s parliament - this thing could’ve turned into a knock-down drag out brawl…that’d spike yer CSpan ratings for sure.

  33. Alejandro Says:

I wonder what’s going on in Bush’s mind. He’s probably thinking something like, “Man, what’s going on? These Republican Senators are Republicans. They work for me. I’m the boss of the country and the Republicans. I need to ask Dick how I can fire them.”

  34. ForTruth Says:

Gonzo is not helping any stereotypes that people associate with Hispanics.

  35. Alejandro Says:

#34 - What the hell does that have to do with anything?

  36. ForTruth Says:

    Sorry Alejandro,

I knew this would be controversial.

There are stereotypes out there that Hispanics are lyers and kanivers. I don’t know where you live, but here in AZ those are some of the stereotypes.

  37. Spudge_Boy Says:

#34 - What the hell does that have to do with anything?

Red neck republicans think Mexicans are stupid. Gonzo is just solidifing that for the red necks.

  38. ForTruth Says:

Down in Mexico the ladies expect the men to go out and cheat on them.

    Its part of the culture.

    The truth can hurt.

  39. Geezerpower Says:

    Gonzo took the oath

Gonzo apologised to the 8 attorneys and their families

    Gonzo changed his story

    Gonzo admitted he made mistakes

Gonzo said he talked to Bush and Rove

    Gonzo is Gonzo

  40. SKdeA Says:

Thankfully, I married an honorable, faithful, feminist Mexican!!!
But you’re right, in Mexico, it is most often the case.

  41. AC Says:

Did Gonzalez attend Pat Robertson’s law school as well? :P

  42. Goose4Gander Says:

    Dump Him.
IF he let go of all those people, AND that was the wrong thing to do, AND those people All get their jobs back,
    THEN
He should consider stepping down, writing a book and finding a new job.
    Before they Dump Him.

  43. Brian Says:

Lets not forget that the US attorneys in question serve at the pleasure of the president. Bush could wake up one morning and fire them all for no reason. Thats the way it works. There has been no crime committed here.

  44. Patrick Says:

There has been no crime committed here.

That’s right. I believe that point was even made at the beginning of the hearings. I don’t think anyone is claiming there was a crime committed.

Using bullet points aren’t going to help you understand what’s taking place here. You’d need to listen to historians or pop open a book or newspaper to follow along.

  45. barry Says:

    2 things:

1: In all the clips I’ve seen of these hearings, Gonzales looks like he is on the verge of having the giggles.

2: Alberto Gonzales could totally out bench-press The Honorable Tom Coburn and all those sissies sitting at that hearing. Don’t discount that. It’s important.
