Gonzales’ dangerous precedent.

Gonzales’ dangerous precedent.

As ThinkProgress noted earlier today, the only reason Alberto Gonzales gave for firing U.S. Attorney Margaret Chiara was that “we had to send someone out from Main Justice to help mediate some kind of personnel dispute.” Legal Times writes that this is a dangerous precedent, since U.S. Attorneys “should use the Executive Office of U.S. Attorneys to help with management issues in the office.”

“What has the attorney general now done?” asks Thomas Heffelfinger, who was U.S. attorney in Minnesota from 2001 to 2006, and who worked closely with a number of the fired prosecutors. “He’s now told U.S. attorneys that are now there, ‘If you ask for help, you run the risk of getting fired.’ How is that helping the management function of the U.S. attorneys?”

    It isn’t.

It is amazing to me what extremes some fools will go to justify their actions in a way that, they think, makes them look good. Gone-zo sat there before an astute Government body and tried to justify his actions by not committing himself to any thing but platitudes and lies. A fools action. A man would have said “I fired those bastards because my boss told me to. You have a problem with that call the SOB himself in here and have it out with the dumb bastard. I am going to play golf.” Not one word would have been said as he walked out the door.

and they could not let that happen… and they are correct…

HE LIED ABOUT IT… because it was the wrong thing to do…

  8. Marie says:

I think that not only does AG not understand the job description Att. Gen. and the functions of the DOJ, but he, like so many politicians have not learned the lessons of the Nixon era: The crime, or the action taken, is sometimes not as bad as the cover up. It is the lying. The smokescreens and stonewalling. The inability to acknowledge they were wrong. The inability to admit mistakes in judgment due to their having chosen politics over integrity.
AG still believes and acts as Bush’s private attorney – AG is so far out of his realm – if no one knew it before, they sure know it now.

In this case, the firing of attorneys is not a crime; firing them for political reasons is unethical and destroys the fabric of the DOJ. They lied because they were unethical – they chose politics over integrity and openness.

It’s the lying that becomes the reason to prosecute.

My Dear Departed Daddy accepted my story until I finally owned up to my bad. Daddy told me that he would stand up for me outside the family for whatever I did but I just had to remember one thing: “Eventually you have to come home.”

Gone-zo is on his way home and he better hope his Dsddy isn’t there waiting for him!

I sure hope Gone-zo is on his way home – and I hope he takes Bush&Co with him. They all need to “visit the woodshed” about now.

I will explain my reaction to your post with a little nostalgia. Many years ago I did a post graduate paper on “Metaphor.” I took the stand that metaphor was really just a crutch for people that were too lazy to learn a greater vocabulary. I was terribly upset that, although I got an “A” for the paper. my Professor took exception to my premise. I have since learned that he was more than correct and more than lenient in his grading. Metaphor is beauty, metaphor brings the “thisness” of a “that” to the level of art, metaphor is entertaining and intellectual, metaphor is demonstrative and demanding. My point: G. W. Bush is not a king. That is not a metaphor. Marie’s boy-king and my King George the Dumb are metaphors. However, when using the metaphor to describe our demented chief executive we invoke a little interest and entertainment rather than just calling him the asshole in the White House (another metaphor, by the way).

Like most religious terrorist/fanatics, Hendler believes that murder for a *religious* purpose is being *good*. He’s repeatedly said that he believes religious people should “set aside” their values in order to “win”. It’s how wackos like Osama (or McVeigh & Hendler) can claim to be religious, while commit such horrific crimes.

Psychiatrists this week while discussing the VA. issue have repeated that these wackos falsely believe that “Violence=Power=Masculinity”, and tend to become dangerous lunatics based on this false principle. This is in fact that whacked out values that Hendler and Venus have. They share the core characteristic of serial killers and terrorists. While that doesn’t mean they will become a terrorist, or murder, their values are pretty much a pre-requisite. How sad, they’re always the last to know and admit they’re lunatics.

…you failed to protect us from Janet Reno by choosing to remain silent and NOT IMPEACH her…

…you FAILED to protect us against Madeline Albright’s incompetence because you chose not to call for HER resignation…

…and for ALL the terrible TREASONOUS crimes you NOW find Bill Clinton guilty of…

…you chose to IMPEACH him for something as asinine as “lying” about a personal indiscretion…

…But WE Liberal Progressives won’t make that same mistake YOU LOSERS made…

…we’re going after Bushiva, L’il Dick et al. for BIG CRIMES…

…like TREASON, CORRUPTION, INCOMPETENCE, WAR PROFITEERING, WAR CRIMES, CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY, CRIMINAL MALFEASANCE/NEGLIGENCE, and DERELICTION of DUTY…

    …just to name a few…

    …If YOU conned’self-serving retards loved your country…

…you’d be supporting us, instead of thwarting our efforts…

…but you hate Liberal Progressives and democracy…

…MORE than you hate the crimes perpetrated by your gods listed above…

…what a disgusting bunch of idiot inbred TRAITORS you Bushite conned’self-serving idol worshippers are…

…not to worry though, we liberal progressives will save the day, just step aside…

    Shane,

I am a long way from romantic, to everybody but Zooey and Katy, but I hope I am not hopeless. But if I hope I am not hopeless then I cant be hopeless because I hope I am not hopeless therefore you, Sir, are at least half wrong, but given that Katy and Zooey still love me then I have the majority and I am a hopefull romantic. Let’s don’t beat around the BUSH here.

    Dangerous PRECEDENT?

    Yes!

Not only that but our country has a DANGEROUS P-R-E-S-I-D-E-N-T.

Everything spells DANGER with this administration.

    Remember Rodney DANGERfield’s famous one-line:
    “I don’t get no respect.”

Sorry Bushies! Sorry Bushies! Sorry Bushies!

Bushies don’t get no respect. Gee, I wonder why? I can’t figure one that out. That’s a toughie! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Alberto, we’ve heard you say once, or twice, three times, four times, five times, or 75 times, “I CAN’T RECALL.” It’s all lies.

Alberto, why don’t you say to a reporter: “I DON’T GET NO RESPECT.” If you said that, we would finally believe you. That WOULD be the truth.

Please tell the truth at least once. Hearing, “I DON’T GET NO RESPECT” would be so refreshing. So refreshingly honest!!

    John

I associate Tennessee Ernie Ford with two things:

    1. The song’ Sixteen Tons.’

    2. The saying, “She’s got quite a hitch in her get-a-long.”

I guess it’s time to play ‘Until the Next Teardrop Falls’ by Freddie Fender. Well, maybe Britney is first.

I think Alberto Gonzales should play ‘Until the Next Teardrop Falls.’

    John

Happy Earth Day to you Raven!
Kind of ironic that today of all days, in Berkeley CA of all places, there were so many people going to the Earth Day party that it caused… gridlock!
    Only in Beserkley.
I work there, live in Oakland…

Hello all you fabulous people. Am very very busy so not a lot of time to post until the end of the month, but will be reading avidly!

  120. SKdeA says:

Hey Jay -did you sign the petition for Wolfowitz? And does anyone know if there is a petition to dump Gonzo?

  121. SKdeA says:

Sharon, have a safe trip, and I hope your friend is OK!

  122. John Gilpins says:

    Clyde,

My song expertise is beginning to run on the thin side now.

I can’t think of many songs that fit the bill. I haven’t listened to pop music for a good 17 years. Of course, when I was young I listened to pop and rock music but that’s many years ago. Now, I’m a New Age guy. Songs with titles like: ‘Overflowing majestic space music’ aren’t filled with many powerful lyrics.

    John

  123. Frank Matthews says:

Still all upset about Gonzales? He passed the hearing and will remain Attorney General serving at the pleasure of the president. Just get used to the idea. Your precious House doesn’t have the authority to dictate who’s AG and who’s not.

    matthews.frank@gmail.com

  124. Briseadh na Faire says:

121 – but the House does have the authority to IMPEACH.

Now, how would that look, your precious Attorney General, your numero uno crime fighter, IMPEACHED for High Crimes and Misdemeanors?

To me, it would be a refreshing rain after a long drought.

    (take that, metaphoroff!)

hey! i knew you were in that area… so is my son, a grad student at
berkeley… he and his girlfriend just moved from oakland to berkeley after the second armed mugging… when i visited him, the neighborhood seemed so cozy and safe… he was not phased so much, but when it happened to the girl, that was the last straw…

i’ll be flying out there next month to attend his graduation…
they are moving to pasadena area in june – more post-doc work…

btw – his dad is a jazz/rock/brass trumpeter here in illinois…
i forwarded your website to him a while back…

  127. Dan says:

Good luck with that impeachment too, Briseadh na Faire.
