Gonzales Fails To Follow Through On Pledge To ‘Straighten Out’ Lies He Told Sen. Pryor

pryorAs noted by ThinkProgress yesterday, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales lied to Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR) when he pledged to him in late 2006 that he wanted “to go through a Senate confirmation” to get Tim Griffin installed as U.S. attorney. In truth, after hearing of Pryor’s opposition to Griffin, Gonzales and his chief of staff mobilized a plan to “gum the process to death,” run out the clock, and keep Griffin in office.

Angry over being lied to, Pryor said last month, “They didn’t proceed in good faith with me. And that’s one of the reasons why I think Attorney General Gonzales should resign immediately. I don’t think he has the credibility to run that department anymore.”

At the hearing on Thursday, Sen. Lindsey Graham offered some “personal advice” to Gonzales on the issue, which Gonzales pledged to take up:

GRAHAM: I would just advise you to sit down with [Pryor] and walk through what happened, because I think he’s a reasonable fellow, and you all straighten that out if you can.

GONZALES: Senator, I couldn’t agree more. I have a great deal of admiration for Senator Pryor, and I think that’s a good idea.

Apparently, Gonzales was paying mere lip service to Graham.

On Friday, Gonzales spent his day calling several conservative Senators, including John Cornyn and Arlen Specter. “The attorney general did call me today and he said he was just checking with senators to see how the hearing went,” Specter said Friday. But Gonzales couldn’t find time for Pryor:

[A]s of Friday afternoon, Gonzales had not reached out to Pryor, the senator’s communications director, Michael Teague, told U.S. News. Teague said Pryor’s “door is always open” and that the senator “doesn’t have any reservations” about meeting with Gonzales but is not sure “what good it would do at this point.”

“They not only wrote the E-mail, they implemented that E-mail,” says Teague. “And Griffin still holds that position.” Teague said Pryor still feels lied to and still wants Gonzales to resign.

Maybe Gonzales simply “cannot recall” what he said on Thursday.

    Frank,

You are living proof that living in the crap house long enough, and you no longer smell the stink.

If nothing illegal was done, why all the secrecy, denial, delays, practice testimony. One does not need to practice the truth. Hmm practice saying “I don’t recall”, sounds fishy to me. The govt can look at your phone calls, emails, snail mail, purchases, and tell you if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about. So how come the same rules don’t apply to govt officials?

  15. Frank Matthews says:

    Happy420,

As Attorney General Gonzales said during his hearing, he practises for all testimonies. As far as the secrecy and alleged denial and delays go, I think the executive branch is entitled by law to some secrecy on matters how they operate. How else would they remain an independent branch of the government? The congress may have the right to oversight, but that only means that they have a right to try to find out things.

Gee Frank, I just guessed that you were a Fox news addict. Well, I would suggest that you try to get the news from multiple resources and use your powers of reason to determine what is truth and what is rhetoric. I think the BBC is very good at actually reporting the news with minimal slant. I’m not crazy about CNN, either. PBS/NPR is also a good source for news. Would it hurt to try?

Frank they remain independent by not breaking the law. Yesterday one of my students was whining about how hard my class is. Considering he has an 82, I didn’t get the whining. So I told him that it’s harder to think for yourself than for someone else just to tell you what to think. I’d like to thank the mindless trolls for being able to give my student that explanation – for without them, I wouldn’t have understood why so many people are always looking for someone else to just tell them what to do rather than figure it out themselves…

    :D

  28. Briseadh na Faire says:

Frank Matthews – same troll, different name.

“they serve at the pleasure of the President” yet, by all appearances, the President didn’t fire them.

The executive branch is entitled to secrecy in all its doings. Great. So it’s ok for the President to violate the law, as long as he does it in secret. Congress and the Courts are therefore irrelevent. Frank is on here to support a dictatorship and derail the thread.

“Nothing illegal was done here.” Conclusory. You don’t know the evidence, and it is ok with you if no evidence ever sees the light of day. Yet sufficient evidence has been uncovered to suggest multiple crimes: obstruction of justice, perjury, lying to Congress, violations of the Hatch Act, violations of the Presidential Records Act, conspiracy to interfere with a federal prosecution.

You know, Frank, if you and your ilk got your way, the only solution to the Executive Branch’s violations of the law and Constitution would be assassination. When the rule of law no longer exists, people turn to violence. Is that what you ultimately want?

  47. Briseadh na Faire says:

36 – but this country was not designed to be a fascist state. Fascism and democracy are incompatible. Your own comments are evidence of that. You support a strong Executive, not co-equal branches of government. You support the rule of fascists such as yourself, irregardless of the rights of others.

Your path will lead to violence in America not too dissimilar to what is happening in Iraq.

To every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Fascism must rule through force and oppression. The greater the force and oppression, the greater the resistance.

Fascism must also rule by fear. Since you are a Fascist, you are also ruled by your fears.

  51. Briseadh na Faire says:

Just to make sure I understand you correctly:

I can see you’ve put a lot on emphasis and spin to describe the methods required in the post-9/11 world as worthy of investigation, but that’s where I disagree vehemently. [These] are necessary tools for pursuing the war on terror.

    Torture
    Kidnapping
    Murder
    Invading countries
    Targeting political enemies
Revealing the identity of a covert operation front company
    Covering up obstruction of justice

And, just with fascist Germany, 9/11 could have been committed by a faction within the government, to be used to elicit the fear in people such as yourself so thaty you would accept the above crimes.

My list isn’t “spin.” It’s the result of learning the facts and applying the facts to national and international law.

    Comment by Juan C — April 21, 2007 @ 9:53 am

It shows the world that the United States is the greatest State Sponsor of Terrorism.

And our new commenter, Frank, reinforces that view. Europe saw what happens when a fascist state is allowed to exist and make war on other states. If Frank gets his way, it will be the United States against everybody. The exodus has already begun; Halliburton has fled the country. Others will follow.

When China quits financing our debt our economy will spiral into depression overnight. Civil unrest will follow. Those that can afford to leave the country will leave. The government will impose martial law. We will experience first-hand what the citizens of Iraq have been living for going on five years now.

This is the path we are on, unless we change.

50 – yet VT demonstrates that nothing that has been done can prevent massacres.

The only reason we haven’t been attacked by “terrorists” is because “terrorists” don’t want to attack us. They could if they wanted to.

We have to address the root cause of why people resort to acts of terrorism in the first place; oppression and a lack of redress through the judicial system.

    1. There is nothing wrong with secularism, as such.

    2. “Tolerance towards terrorism,” would be a president who sells weapons to the Iranians while they are holding Americans hostage — and while telling the American people “we don’t negotiate with terrorists.”

    3. Sexual deviancy is more a conservative family value, as exemplified by the number of convicted conservative pols. Mormonism isn’t secular – yet it engages in “sexual deviancy” by tacitly endorsing polygamy within it’s flock.

    4. “Drug abuse?” Were you attempting to be serious? Surely you know about the Betty Ford clinic? Was she a liberal? If you count alcoholism, and prescription drug abuse, conservatives don’t particularly stand out for their temperance.

    A bunch of rightist baloney.

In the United States, the teen birth rate is nearly 11 times higher than that of the Netherlands, nearly five times higher than the rate in France, and nearly four times higher than that in Germany

In the United States, the teen abortion rate is nearly eight times higher than the rate in Germany, nearly seven times higher than that in the Netherlands, and nearly three times higher than the rate in France.

In the United States, the teen gonorrhea rate is over 74 times higher than that in the Netherlands and France, over 66 times higher than the rate in former West Germany, and over 38 times higher than that in former East Germany.

The proportion of sexually active teenage men and women ages 18 to 19 that had two or more sexual partners within the past year is substantially higher in the United States than in France. Data on number of sexual partners are not available for Germany or the Netherlands. Having two or more sexual partners increases youth’s potential risk of becoming infected with HIV and other STIs

France, Germany and The Netherlands are all LIBERAL.

The US is currently run by NEOCONS.

Let’s see you try to justify the facts above.

  83. Briseadh na Faire says:

Gonzales’ “I don’t remember” testimony comes across as flipping off Congress, 64 times.

  84. Briseadh na Faire says:

Maybe the reason why Bush doesn’t want Rove and Meiers to testify in public, under oath, is he doesn’t want them to break Gonzales’ record for the number of “I don’t knows.” That could also explain why they don’t want transcripts made even of closed-door “interviews.”

With such a bad memory, it’s amazing Gonzales can hold any job more demanding than that of a greeter at WalMart.

  85. Briseadh na Faire says:

80 – maybe we need a “surge” in abstinence?

Try making that sound less dirty. :D

  87. Briseadh na Faire says:

84 – We need a “Clean-cut All-American ‘Leave it to Beaver’” surge in abstinence?

  88. kasinca says:

Gonzo knows where the bodies are buried but he is under orders to shield for KKKarl Rove at all costs. KKKarl Rove lost his five years worth of emails that would solve all the puzzles in this corrupt and incompetent administration. KKKarl Rove makes Nixon look like a good guy.

  89. big papa says:

“Gonzales and his chief of staff mobilized a plan to “gum the process to death,” run out the clock, and keep Griffin in office.”

…THIS is the CRIMINAL Bushite cabal’s template for skirting responsibility for their incompetence and corruption…

    …”gum the process…run out the clock”…

…exactly what Bushiva, L’il Dick and their co-conspirators in the Repulsivscum Party are doing…

…in Iraq, on Gonzales’ resignation, and the myriad of democratic investigations into their corruption…

  90. big papa says:

    Comment by Frank Matthews #42

…since YOUR kind- (conned’self-serving Bushite inbred racist fascists)…

    …are the world’s biggest “terrorists”…

…then the people of the world should be using…

…”coercive interrogations and decapitation of leadership”…

    …on you Bushite inbreds…

    …right?

  91. Com-n-sense says:

The criminals in this administration have no intention of keeping their word about anything pertaining to accountabiblity. Period.

They are hard-core criminals that will say ANYTHING at the time to get by and then continue to do what they want until someone STOPS THEM!

Playing “nice” only encourages them. The will perceive you as weak and run right over your ass. The Democrats either have to start doing something about removing these crooks ASAP or they can be considered part of the problem.
