Limbaugh: Conservatives Should ‘Circle The Wagons’ Around ‘Idiot,’ ‘Weak Attorney General’

gonzoOn his radio show Friday, Rush Limbaugh encouraged conservatives to “circle the wagons” around Alberto Gonzales, recycling his argument that winning elections is more important than governing. Here was Rush’s amusing defense of Gonzales:

Everybody on the Republican side now, along with the Democrats, wants to throw Alberto Gonzales overboard. He may be an idiot, I don’t know. He may be a weak attorney general. … It seems, every time there’s a public demand for somebody to resign in Washington, it’s always a Republican!

While Rush may be willing to disregard incompetence, other conservatives are not. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) and Rep. Adam Putnam (R-FL) have called for Gonzales’ resignation. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) put out a statement saying Gonzales “should have a frank discussion with the White House. If he and the president decide that he cannot be an effective leader…then he should resign.”

Even White House insiders acknowledge that Gonzales “hurt himself during testimony.” “Everyone’s putting their best public face on,” one source said, “but everyone is discouraged. Everyone is disappointed.”

Digg It!

Transcript:

RUSH: I have to tell you something, folks. I’m embarrassed, once again, by our side, some of the Republicans up in Washington. It just appears that they cannot think strategically. They have no idea how to circle the wagons around their own. Everybody on the Republican side now, along with the Democrats, wants to throw Alberto Gonzales overboard. He may be an idiot, I don’t know. He may be a weak attorney general. I think that’s why they — You know, Ashcroft was strong and Bush had to get rid of him, and now Gonzales is weak. We have to get rid of him! All this concocted stuff over the US attorneys? There’s no crime. There really isn’t even any incompetence here in the process of getting rid of the attorneys. What this is about is that Gonzales may have not remembered what happened when or where. But whatever the status of Gonzales, it’s beside the point. Why in the world is it only…? It seems, every time there’s a public demand for somebody to resign in Washington, it’s always a Republican!

Okay, Rush. I demand that all high-level democrats in the executive branch of the government resign!!! Oh, yeah……….

Adjust the Limtards oxy drip, he’s convoluted again.

  2. muzz says:

Gee – I don’t know Rush, maybe it has to do with the fact that they are totally corrupt, are idiots, and don’t give a rat’s ass about defending the constitution.

  3. Jay Randal says:

Rush that is because GOPers, including yourself, are corrupt creepos!

  4. Dan says:

Attorney Generals can be fired for political reasons too, right?

  5. Jay Randal says:

Limbaugh forgets that the entire GOP demanded that Pres. Clinton resign for lying under oath about getting BJs from Monica. Hypocrites like Rush would be wise to shut their yappers.

  6. Tom says:

every time there’s a public demand for somebody to resign in Washington, it’s always a Republican

Well, no sh!t, Sherlock! Do you think there’s a pattern forming there, Limpballs. You should be able to figure that out . . . even with “half your brain tied behind your back just to make it fair”.

  7. VerbalKint says:

Proving once again that competence and professionalism mean absolutely nothing to the cynical Republicans and their morally bankrupt philosophy that emphasizes winning at all costs.

surprise, surprise. rush agrees with john cornyn – it’s not about competence, it’s about maintaining political advantage.

“If for some reason Alberto Gonzales is thrown overboard, it’s not going to end the problem that the president has from a political standpoint. A newly emboldened majority — Democrat [sic] majority, who is going to continue to conduct nvestigations and try to gain political advantage the best they can.”/blockquote>

  17. Dan says:

I found this by John Gizzi of Human Events who caught up with David Marston who was fired by President Carter for political reasons and reveals how unconcerned over such political firing a Democrat-controlled Congress was in 1978.

What does Dave Marston think? “He’s trying to rewrite history,” was the response of the 64-year-old former prosecutor to the President who fired him. “Under the standard he has imposed on Gonzales, the President should have fired Atty. Gen. Griffin Bell in 1978.” Although it is so far unclear how much Gonzales knew about what the U.S. prosecutors were working on when they were forced out and what reasons were behind their exits, Marston pointed out that then-Rep. Joshua Eilberg (D.-Pa.) had actually called Carter on November 4, 1977 to demand Marston’s ouster and that the Prsident, in turn, called Bell and told him to “hurry up” in finding a new U.S. attorney in Philadelphia. Eilberg himself was the subject of a corruption probe by Marston’s office and, as Marston recalled to me, “the Justice Department was aware of this because I told Russell Baker [Bell's top aide] that Eilberg was under investigation. And Russell Baker, who was a stand-up guy, confirmed this.”

A significant difference between his situation and those of the fired U.S. attorneys that Marston pointed out to me was that “Democrat controlled Congress in 1978 and did not investigate a Democratic President. Today, they control Congress and they will investigate the Republican Administration.”

And how president Carter lied about it… causing no furor. In reviewing the transcript of Carter’s “Today” interview, Marston pointed out that the opening segment featured a clip of Carter from a news conference on January 12, 1978 in which he is asked about the Marston sacking and says: “I’ve not interfered at all.”

“That was on January 12th,” the former prosecutor pointed out, “and yet the evidence shows that he had called his attorney general about replacing me two months earlier.

Do you think we will see more on this story of Jimmy Carter firing a U.S. Attorney for political reasons in future MSM stories about the Gonzales?

  18. Jay Randal says:

Dan? Lying under oath is not determined by the person admitting it. The person is proven to be a liar when their testimony does not hold together. Gonzales lied at the hearing repeatedly and it can be proven.

  19. Dan says:

    linda:

Both Carter and Clinton fired U.S. Attorneys for political reasons. Did you know that?

  20. TomInMaine says:

“It seems, every time there’s a public demand for somebody to resign in Washington, it’s always a Republican!”

Well Duh! At this stage of the game I think it would be safe to say that the corrupt Republicans out number the corrupt Democrats by at least 50 to 1 so of course it’s always going to be a republican.

Rush seems to conviently forget that back in the 90’s we had a reverse situation.

Advice to Rush, sit back on that voulumonous ass of yours and wait, the tide will turn and it will be the Dems in the hot seat within a few years.

Corruption in this government is not new, it just changes hands from time to time.

  24. Jay Randal says:

LOL Dan > Gonzo’s entire testimony was lies. He prepped for the hearing for 2 weeks, or more, so that was to try to hold his concocted story together. If you are honest, then no preparation is needed to testify.

  25. Dan says:

So, it shouldn’t be hard at all to “prove” one such lie, Jay Randal.

  26. VerbalKint says:

    Comment by Dan — April 21, 2007 @ 10:31 am

Well, by nearly universal acclaim he did lie, so why should I answer this question?

I do think that having ZERO credibility with ANYONE is pretty good cause to resign an important public service job like AG. Gross, comical incompetence is a pretty good reason, too.

Very funny, Dan. You must be new to these parts, or you would realize this talking point was thoroughly debunked already.

You wouldn’t happen to know Frank Matthews from the other thread, would you? You sound an awful lot like him, like maybe the two of you are pals or something, coming here together to lay down some RNC talking points.

  29. Jay Randal says:

LOL Dan > I was not at the hearing, so a Democrat like Rep. Waxman will do the digging into Gonzo’s testimony.

  30. VerbalKint says:

So, it shouldn’t be hard at all to “prove” one such lie, Jay Randal.
    Comment by Dan — April 21, 2007 @ 10:46 am

Well, Dan, even if Jay did prove such a lie, I’m sure it would somehow fail your standards for proof.

Tell me, Dan: did Scooter libby commit perjury and obstruction of justice, and if so, why?

Pretty creepy post, Dan. Are you saying that Jews weren’t gassed in Nazi Germany? It sounds to me like you are saying that. And what do you mean by “Don’t worry”? Should I be worried about you “forcing” me to do something?!? Are you saying “we have ways of forcing you to do things”?!?

  39. Zooey says:

  40. Dan says:

Oh, so Jay Randal, when you claimed that Gonzales’s “lies” can be proven, you meant by someone else, not you? I am fine waiting until they are proven in a court of law as well.

  41. Dan says:

I am neither Frank nor Jake. Can any of you simply argue the merits without the illogical ad hominem attacks?

  45. Dan says:

It is kinda boring, I agree, with only one side of the argument answering questions and the other side resorting to ad hominems will continue. For those who want to discuss the merits of this topic, here are the unanswered questions I’ve asked so far:

The Attorney General can be fired for political reasons too, right?

If Gonzales did not lie Thursday, why should he resign?

Do you think we will see anything about Carter firing a U.S. Attorney for political reasons in future MSM stories about the Gonzales?

  46. Jay Randal says:

Dan > Clinton’s lies were never proven inside a courtroom before a judge. He was taped under oath giving testimony to one of Ken Starr’s attorneys. When his testimony was shown to be false, because Monica admitted they had a sexual affair, then Bill was proven to have perjured himself. If Gonzo does not resign, then the next step will be an indictment of perjury, then eventually a trial before a judge.

  47. RemoveBush says:

    Therefore, HE LIED!!!

“Dan” are you saying you don’t believe Jews were gassed in Nazi Germany? If you are, you are much too Reich Wing for anybody here to bodther responding to you any further.

  53. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

Dan, I have two question for you. Why are you circling the wagons around the Attorney General, and defending this administration? Even Nixon backers either cut their losses, including E. Howard Hunt, and admitted they were wrong, or faded into oblivion. Which way are you going?

  54. John Gilpins says:

    “Circle the wagons?”

I’m beginning to think that we should address our president as: President GEORGE CUSTER.

And we all thought General George Custer was incompetent. Little did we know! Yikes! General George Custer is looking like a genius compared to President George Bush and his cronies.

The Bush administration is down on the mat and the count is about 9 now. Gonzales’ testimony is more fun than professional wrestling. Hulk Hogan couldn’t even save these sorry bunch of losers.

    John

  55. margaret says:

I don’t know if Gonzo lied or not (but there did seem to be some contradiction with some previous statements he’s made) but I do know one thing – he sure does have a crappy memory!

And he doesn’t seem to know what’s going on in his own department! Not sure what it is he does most of the time but it sure doesn’t seem as though he’s running his department!

As Jon Stewart pointed out, “He’s using the Ken Lay defense!” As in, “I don’t know, I don’t recall, I wasn’t involved but but but I’m SURE that nothing improper took place!” Gimme a break.

    RemoveBush:

Once he admitted to lying, I did call on Clinton to resign. I would do the same with Gonzales, so I’m not sure what you think is “hypocritical” with that. Could you try explaining your position without the invective and ad hominem?

    RobG and Shane:

Could you try stating your position without the ad hominem as well?

    Lone Voice of Reason:

Because, sir, non-terrorists are innocent until proven guilty in this country. As I said above, if Gonzales admits to lying under oath, I would call for his resignation as well.

My point is that what you are saying is that only when someone admits that they lied under oath should they be held accountable……

Nice to see that you care about the rule of law we have in the US, or I should say we HAD.

It can be PROVEN very easily that Gonzo lied under oath. His entire testomony does not match what 3 or 4 other witnesses have stated. If the others match up and his does not, does that mean that the other 4 got together and worked out thier statements together to burn Gonzo??? Or….. Does it meant that the other 4 gave truthful accounts and Gonzo LIED???

A FIFTH grader could figure that out!!!!

An attorney general who attends meetings and doesn’t know what was discussed at the meetings! If Alberto doesn’t know what’s going on who does? Does anyone? The incompetance is astounding!

He’s either lying or he’s tragically incompetant. There – the right wing likes things in black and white. Choose which one it is! Either way he shouldn’t be this nation’s “top cop”!

“And I believe my side is worthy of victory, and I believe it’s much easier to reform things that are going wrong on my side from a position of strength. Now, I’m liberated from having to constantly come in here every day and try to buck up a bunch of people who don’t deserve it, to try to carry the water and make excuses for people who don’t deserve it. I just — I did not want to sit here and participate, willingly, in the victory of the libs, in the victory of the Democrat [sic] Party by sabotaging my own.

    watch it at:

What we all should realize is that it must be tough to take on the GOP side. After years of conservative values being pounded against those weak kneed liberals they have to watch incompetence on a scale unknown in our countrys history

That is hilarious. Of course the demands for resignations is of Republics. They are the ones who are breaking the law. They are the ones who are turning our country into a fascist state. They are the ones who are stomping on the constitution. They are the ones who are bankrupting our country.

If there are Democrats who are doing these things, I would like to know who they are (other than Jefferson whom the Democrats have already taken care of by denying him seats on committees).

While I have no idea who Marston is, his name doesn’t even come up in wikipedia in reference to anything (Surprising, considering that Carter was not a popular president) I do know that Clinton did not mass-fire attorneys in the middle of his second term.

A lie does not get any truer with repetition, and frankly if you are wondering why Zooey is accusing you of vile behavior, repeating talking points which have been debunked on THIS FRIGGING SITE doesn’t exactly win very much respect from the regulars here.

  92. Kate Henry says:

“If Gonzales did not lie Thursday, why should he resign?” Of course he didn’t lie, he just didn’t remember. I say that an Attorney General that says “I can’t recall” or “I don’t remember” 74 times in the course of 4 hours is unfit for duty. Do we really need an AG who is pre-Alzheimer’s? The sorry fact is that Gonzo has less qualifications to be AG than any of the US Attorney’s they fired. He is an embarrassment and has done more to corrupt our system of justice than all other AG’s combined.

  93. Kate Henry says:

“If his conviction is upheld, and he is not pardoned, I will have to trust that the system did not punish an innocent man. ”

Excuse me Dan…how would pardoning Libby make him an innocent man? You are hilarious and your talking points are right out of the RNC handbook. I find it amazing that when one troll is either kicked off this board or leaves, an identical troll pops up.

Not to forget that AGAG lied under oath as well. Stick with today Dan, rehashing the old does not excuse the new, that’s a tired old habit the Republicans use and it just wont spin anymore.

If the man running the Justice Department, was former White House Counsel to W., was a former member of the Texas Supreme Court and a licensed member of the Bar cannot ‘recall’ something he is being asked to ‘recall’ under oath, then there are two possibile options:

    1. He is an incompetent IDIOT (which arguably can be refuted by his resume….ARGUABLY)

    Comment by Dan — April 21, 2007 @ 6:00 pm

First off, I wasn’t aware of Carter’s actions then.

Second, even assuming hypocracy, does that excuse current actions?

Should we allow the Bush Administration a free pass on every violation of law, merely by pointing out that other Administrations violated the law?

What about the next Administration? Will Republicans be forever barred from complaining about a Democratic President who deceives the country into a War of Agression? Will they forever be silenced should a Democratic President who listens in on citizens without a warrant? Can they not complain when a Democratic President imprisons a citizen for years without ever filing charges?

Must they tacitly agree to a Democratic President who nullifies hundreds of laws through the use of signing statements?

Will they be forced to keep quiet if a Democratic President orders the DoJ to only investigate Republicans and turn a blind eye to corruption by Democrats?

If you think it is right and just that Republicans cry out against the above-mentioned actions, are you then supporting hypocracy yourself?

I was only two at the time, so I don’t know what the context of that firing was. Let’s assume that you and Dave Marston are accurate. Then the logical answer is that it was wrong then and it is wrong now. We are dealing with the current situation, and I assume, from your statement, that you also feel that it is wrong and holds the potential for obstruction of justice. I, personally, would never put party above country when it comes to the lead law inforcement officer in the country.

Oh, and whatever wrongdoing President Carter is alleged to have done regarding Marston, I do believe that after 30 years, the Statute of Limitations has lapsed. If you and/or the Republicans were so outraged about it, charges should have been filed in a timely fashion.

  131. Briseadh na Faire says:

JTitor, thanks for the link. From the article:

Marston is a Republican. That would mean his removal by a Democratic president was not like that of the Bush administration, in which a Republican president removed his own Republican appointees — and that Marston is not exactly an impartial witness on the issue.

Time further described Marston as “an outright political appointee who hunted headlines as vigorously as he hunted official corruption in both parties,” quoting then-House Speaker Tip O’Neill as calling Marston “a Republican political animal” who took office “with viciousness in his heart and for only one reason — to get Democrats.”

Marston’s, and your, credibility just plummetted.

The problem Bush is going to face when Gonzo resigns is that he is going to have a hell of a time getting a new AG past the Senate. They will be asking questions about protecting the constitution, protecting rights to privacy, torture and all those other pesky topics that the Republics and George would like to be kept quiet. The Democrats will be able to try all those issues in the public eye while attempting to confirm a new AG. It’s going to be a blast. I can hardly wait. It is Bush’s worst nightmare.

  151. JTitor says:

Maybe I need to remind the trolls that say Alberto Gonzales didn’t break any laws? I would say neither was Scooter Libby guilty of a crime until it was investigated. It was determined that obstruction of justice for intentionally deceiving a grand jury investigating a crime was going to be Mr. Libby’s downfall.

Now we look at one of the 8 attorneys fired, Carol Lam. She was investigating Jerry Lewis R-San Diego for his involvement with Duke Cunningham and his political action committee, Future Leaders PAC, and the investment group, Cerberus Capital Management. This investigation abruptly shelved after the firing of Carol Lam.

This is just one of three potential legal issues facing the Whitehouse and the AG. What did Alberto know and when did he know it? Lets look at the email…. hmmm. No email. Because it had been deleted. While any one of these facts don’t appear to illegal, all are potentially illegal. The Whitehouse should be scared? In effect, what this does is paint the Republicans as corrupt, liars, and cheats. The Duke Cunningham scandal was dying down before this emerged, and it’s only going to get worse. Republicans are running from this administration faster then Foley to a kid’s birthday party.

  152. JTitor says:

Many Republicans are looking at this and seeing their chances for re-election dwindling. This scandal enforces the notion that the Republican Party is corrupt and morally bankrupt in the eyes of the electorate. If Gonzales steps down then the investigation goes away…. Issue resolved from the Republican perspective. The problem is Bush has made it clear that Gonzales will stay. So the pundits are trying to rally the troops and use the disinformation machine to bring back some support, and at the same time bring pressure to the Republican Party to stay the course. The Republicans are distancing themselves from the Neo-Conservatives at a record pace. What you are seeing is the Right imploding.

Faking ignorance is what criminals do when they get caught lying. In the one instance where he was caught lying point blank he gave the excuse — “I misspoke.”

Of course “misspoke” is lying to everyone else.

He practiced lying for two weeks — “I am not aware”

If he wasn’t lying, he is the surely the most incompetent and unqualified AG in modern times. If his memory is so poor to not even remember a meeting with the President of the US he is probably an Alzheimer’s victim or just plain stupid.

Either way — he ahs got to go!

At least not any “lie” you can prove, abdiel, right?

Sorry I missed all the other comments above. If anyone is still left on this old thread, let me know.

SOMEBODY promised him that the world was going to be a WAY different place than it truly, finally, deeply, IS! yeah!

No matter what, be patient, no one is giving up yet. If next week, he is still there and the MSM is still avoiding the story, a website MUST be activated to get people out onto the street.

if there is such a website, post it.

i may be just a troglodyte, but our long experience with greedy feds makes us have a certain point of view.
