Kristol: Reid’s Iraq Remark Is ‘Much More Disgraceful Than Anything Trent Lott Said’

This morning on Fox News Sunday, Weekly Standard editor William Kristol said that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) remark that the Iraq war is lost is “much more disgraceful” than Sen. Trent Lott’s (R-MS) 2002 claim that the country would be much better off if it had maintained racist segregation policies.

“What Harry Reid said is much more disgraceful than anything Trent Lott said, and I do think Democrats should ask Harry Reid to step down,” Kristol said.

NPR’s Juan Williams stared at Kristol with a look of confusion. “Brit [Hume] says it’s ‘laughable,’ you say it’s a ‘disgrace.’ I think what he said is the truth. I mean, it’s unavoidable,” Williams said. “Most Americans think we should have never gone in there, so he’s speaking in a voice that represents the majority of the American people.”

Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/04/kristollott421.320.240.flv]

As Juan Williams points out, Reid’s comments are hardly controversial. They are shared by President Bush’s regular military adviser Henry Kissinger and several senior U.S. military officials, as well as a majority of the American people:

Washington Post/ABC News poll, April 16:

Will U.S. win or lose the war?

Lose: 51%
Win: 35%

Rasmussen poll, April 16:

Thirty-three percent (33%) of American voters believe that history will ultimately judge the U.S. mission in Iraq a success. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 50% of Likely Voters believe the mission will be deemed a failure.

UPDATE: Atrios notes how CNN also documented how the American people agree with Reid.

  1. Raven Says:

I believe you shoud be stepped ON, Mr. Kristol...

  2. Kryptik Says:

Of course, because saying that a war is lost is so much worse than saying that the country is better off segregated.....

  3. Left Coast Mike Says:

The guy is obviously insane...just lock him up in the looney bin. He is likley to go postal...PSYCOTIC!!!

  4. dono Says:

I like the way Kristol minimizes the comment on segregation. He actually laughs when explaining it. Note how serious he is though when he wants Reid removed because he dares speak the truth.

Does he think our men and women in battle are so stupid that they are fighting for W's moronic talking points? I assure you, our combat soldiers are not stupid and are more insulted by Mcain saying you can stroll through Bagdad to scoop up bargains on one dollar rugs for your daily constitutional...

  5. Lora Says:

If the always wrong Mr. Broken-Kristol-ball is criticizing you, Senator Reid, you surely must be correct.

  6. brando Says:

Raven, I would see your 'stepped on' and add 'kick in teeth'

  7. Hector Garcia Says:

Fascist propaganda enacted, monologued by a proud fascist.

  8. Rocks911 Says:

    dono,

This "administration" and their lackeys could give a rats ass about the soldiers on the ground, they are just so many pawns. The Republic666ans are all about the defense contractors. When war is as profitable as these fascists have made it, expect more of it, and to hell with the soldiers.

  9. AboveTheClouds Says:

Why doesn't FOX spend a segment of air time pointing out all the things Kristol and his neocon Iraq fantasy have been correct about. That segment would last three seconds and have crickets chirping in the background. The more time Kristol can spend talking about Reid is less time he has to defend the failed Bush/GOP/neocon policies here and abroad.

  10. VerbalKint Says:

The best punishment for Kristol would be patrol duty in Sadr City. How I would love to see this utterly loathsome freak sent there.

  11. Its_Me_Ya_Krazy Says:

time for CRYSTAL to strap a gun on his back and go to iraq to kick in some doors.... think he/she will....?

  12. SouthWest Bob Says:

Lacking results, the conservatives, led by cheney/rove, must resort to discrediting anyone who points out their failed policies. Americans realize the sky isn't falling but that Americans continue to die in Iraq and $Billions of dollars have been wasted or directed to cheney pals. Conservatives cannot defend their results so attack the criticism. Kristol is simply a cheney/rove puppet, who is neither accountable nor responsible for anything he spews. The conservatives better love him because everyone else in the world sees through his phony act.

  13. Erroll Says:

If the Democrats had an ounce of sense, they would point to Kristol's comment as just another example of how Iraq has become so similar to Vietnam. What Kristol said is the same things that were said, almost verbatim, during the Vietnam War when the hawks claimed back then that any criticism of the war was wrong, disgraceful, ended up giving aid and comfort to the enemy, traitorous, etc. Williams should have demanded that Kristol point to him where in the U.S. Constitution it states that one is not allowed to question and criticize the government during a time of war. I have checked my copy of the Constitution and was unable to find that particular passage where it states that criticism of the government during wartime is expressly forbidden. Geoffrey Stone brilliantly explores this topic in his very relevant book "Perilous Times- Free Speech in Wartime- From the Sedition Act of 1798 to the War on Terrorism".

  14. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

As one of the primary backers of the Iraq invasion and continuing occupation, this is merely Bill Kristol defending himself. And if I hear one more time that Democrats don't support the troops by insisting on deadlines to be met....someone really should ask these a..holes how keeping troops in a situation where they are like targets in a shooting gallery is "supporting the troops." Does anyone know if either Kristol or Hume have ever BEEN to Iraq since the war started?

  15. Billy Kristol Says:

    Love me, love my war.

  16. Briseadh na Faire Says:

Yesterday, Rush was quoted as saying, "It seems, every time there’s a public demand for somebody to resign in Washington, it’s always a Republican!"

Today, Bill Kristol calls for Reid's resignation.

Frankly, I'm getting sick of seeing Bill's smarmy face.

  17. Lora Says:

Although I am sure Broken-Kristol-ball earns much more than I do, I wouldn't mind starting or contributing to a fund to send him (not to mention, Limpballs, O'Lielly, Ann-thrax, etc.) to Iraq. How about you?

  18. Vinnie Says:

I'm reminded of the line in the movie Stripes where he's trying to motivate his group and say "Come on. This is the United States Army. We're 10 and 1.", an obvious reference to Vietnam. (Oddly, this particular line is not seen in the edited versions they show on network TV.)

I think it can now be considered that were 11-2 in wars overall.

  19. AboveTheClouds Says:

Bush, Kristol, and the neocons made a fatal mistake before they invaded Iraq by thinking they could somehow convince Americans to give a shit about Iraq--when they themselves do not care. Ir Bush really cared about what happened to Iraq would he have hired Donald Rumsfeld to lead the charge and would he have taken advice from Richard Perle?

  20. oldtree Says:

does this thing live outside pox? is it perhaps confined, or quarantined due to the pox? it clearly knows very little about life in general, and seems rather isolated from reality.
it is a thing to ignore, for emboldening it only makes it say more and more absurd things. couldn't we just stop giving it press? my guess is that it would cause it's head to implode due to neglect

  21. Briseadh na Faire Says:

Lora - I would rather send them to Guantanamo, to be interrogated by Republican-approved non-torture.

    Broadcast.

    Live.

    On Fox.

Add to your list members of the PNAC.

Maybe then we'll find out the truth about 9/11.

  22. elmo Says:

I like how Hume and Kristol both said emphatically that "Al Qaeda is the cause of most the violence there not the sectarian issues" (paraphrasing of course)

Bring back the draft now, it's time for these fuckers to go done.

  23. s Says:

It is way past time to expose emotionally disturbed people like Kristol for who they truly are. Kristol is a narcissistic childish coward. As John Edwards said last night in Detroit, during a speech I attended, "We're ( the American people) better than this." He was referring to a whole spectrum of things.

I say we are better than those with the whining juvenile world view of Kristol. These spoiled infants continually try to foist this bile on our nation. It is time become a great nation made of of people that are capable of reason, honesty, empathy, and courage.

  24. PattyP Says:

You could tell almost as soon as Kristol brought up the Trent Lott thing he realized he'd stepped in it big time, but it was too late to stop. It's like he suddenly remembered he was sitting next to a black guy and maybe references to segregation might not be quite appropriate. Heh.

  27. jeff Says:

Oh it's just Kristol doing irreversable damage to the Neocon movement. Let him keep talking.

  28. Lora Says:

    #21 BnF,
I can agree with that idea. It's probably cheaper, too.

  29. Arthur C. Says:

Bill Kristol?? Why would anybody pay attention to that idiot. Wasn't he wrong about EVERYTHING?

  30. John the Elder Says:

Why does TP continue to give any credence to anything that comes from the mouth of Crystal? Anyone with an ounce of sense knows that he is nothing but an asskissing front for the latest hype of the Bush Crime Family. If the media would just ignore the silly fool and the idiots who feed at the same slop sink he does, we would all be better off.

  31. jeff Says:

Neocons are going to regret not having a better plan to end terrorism.

  32. The Eyewitness Muse Says:

Well, Bill Kristol's sense of outrage and mine (our?) are probably tuned to a different radio stations.

I'm still stuck on John McCain's outright lie, you know, that Baghdad is a perfectly safe place to walk around in--about another thousand deaths ago. Of all the things Bush has destroyed, America's ability to thoughtfully look at the truth and speak it without being accused of "being against the troops" stands with his greatest dubious achievements.

Speaking of McCain, a laugh at his expense?
Operation Karaoke: McCain to Croon More Policy Tunes

McCain will also perform at weddings with sappy love song updates from artists such as Lionel Richie (”You’re once, twice, three times invaded“) and Paul McCartney (”Baby you’re ablaze.")

  33. GodfryDaniel Says:

Call it what you want, defeat, surrender, cut and run... anything that puts a stop to the insanity that the Bush administration has created is a huge victory for America.

  34. David Kereluk Says:

What Bill Kristol has said is worse than Imus, think about this for a second, segregation in America would be better than trying to stop a war George Bush and gang hate black people.

  35. Knappy Headed Ho Says:

The whole "we are/aren't winning" premise is a fallacy. And although I agree that theres really no conceivable definitition of "winning" that we could use to make ourselves feel better about Iraq, I personally think the democrats aren't using the right language.. instead of saying "we arent winning" they should say "there are no good guys here"... "we used to be allies with saddam because the islamic radicals he fought were worse than him".. then they should show a picture of rumsfeld shaking hands with hussien. honestly, come on guys.. deep down.. behind all the "democracy for iraqis...we have to fight them there" crap, deep down, the unspoken undercurrent that they've used to justify this war is that "saddam is a bad man"... well if we start reminding the american people he used to be our ally, that would do alot to turn people againt bush. i am utterly confused as to why the democrats refuse to use this very powerful tactic. anyone have any speculation.... as much as I would love to think that ALL these frikkin politicians aren't tools trying to feed at the same trough, the abject refusal of dems to bring up our dirty past dancing with saddam makes me think its true...

  36. DBahmanou Says:

Maybe I’m a little naive, but I thought we “won the war” in Iraq (Bush), and that we are in the “last troughs” of the insurgency (Cheney)…

  37. Frank Matthews Says:

It's completely irrelevant what the likely voters think. The fact is that we've got troops in Iraq and it is completely irresponsible and unpatriotic to go out in public and say that the war effort is lost. I mean WTF is wrong with Reid? What happened to supporting your President and being loyal to your State when at war?

  38. Can-O-Whoop-Ass Says:

Frank, can't face reality that the "war" was lost the moment we crossed the border into Iraq? You should open a book and see how well the Korean war, as well as Vietnam went to see how well our democracy building went. And don't bring up Germany and Japan, they surrendered, I never saw Saddam and his generals signing truce papers, like the leadership of Japan and Germany did after WWII.

Frank the only way America could win would be to have complete genocide, these people hate you just as much as you hate them, and know why they'll win? Because their not cowards like you who fight the battle behind your keyboard.

  39. Can-O-Whoop-Ass Says:

But you seem to forget that Reid is an elected official whose job is to represent the people[electorate],as a Majority Leader.

You also forgot that the money for the war and lives lost also comes from the majority.

  43. Your Conscience Says:

Sad truth is these Neocons are not stupid. They know as do the GOP water carriers that this has been lost. However they know something the American people are in denial about. WE ARE NEVER LEAVING IRAQ.......EVER. This is being reiterated by the Dino Hillary.

That's kind of right up there with the Nazi propaganda machine urging boy-soldiers to victory as the Russians invaded Berlin.

And Baghdad Bob's press statements denying the fact that American troops were in Baghdad, as American tanks rolled in the background.

Once a President commits an international war crime by starting an illegal war of agression, Fascist Frank and his ilk insist we all follow in goose-step behind der furheur.

During the Revolutionary War, people like Frank were called Tories. After all, the Founding Fathers committed treason against King George.

  52. David Kereluk Says:

Y'all seem to be missing what segregation meant to millions, and the pain it brought to America. This is not acceptable for a person who is on TV all the time to go off and say that to hinder people by race is alright, to continue segregation in this country would have bin on par with invading a country for no reason.

  53. Zooey Says:

It's not Sunday on TP unless there's a thread with this blathering Death Head.

  54. the republic of stupidity Says:

At this point you have to wonder if Bill Kristol's own mother takes him seriously any more.

  55. Dave Says:

Bill Kristol: Worst Person in the World....

  56. Uncle Ho Says:

Kristol is much more disgusting. He was/is a cheerleader for this debacle. Yet, he is unwilling to put his ass on the line by enlisting. Kristol is another cowardly, draft-dodging chickenhawk who doesn't have the balls to put his body where his mouth is. Gung-ho for war......as long as someone else does the fighting.

  57. Uncle Ho Says:

America would be better off if shitbirds like Kristol, Limpdick, Hannity, Savage, Bush, Cheney, Ashcroft, Abrams, Hastert, had been fragged in Vietnam.

  58. craig Says:

Why do most Americans hate America?

  59. James Michael Says:

I listen to Kritol, who has not one iota of an idea what being in battle is like, and wonder how can people even agree with such a warmongering chickenhawk. The man is evil. Thank God, Juan Wiliams is around to be the voice of reason. I say let Billy Boy go over and tour Bagdad on his own and report what is really happening. How can these people keep on saying that the outlook in Bagdad is good when so many are being killed daily. Bombing are still going on, troups are being killed, citizens of Bagdad take their lives into their hands daily by going out into the open.
The public needs to wake up to the fact that Kristol and his kind will be pushing this war for a decade if they get the chance and in the end it will all turn out the same.

  60. Uncle Ho Says:

You clearly don't support the U.S. Constitution. According to you, voters don't "count," free speech is unpatriotic, and supporting the President (policy) is more important than supporting the concept of a free and democratic country. During Vietnam, one of the bumper stickers and mottos so popular among the supporters of that war was "America...love it or leave it." Frank...time for you to leave now. Your rhetoric clearly demonstrates that you do not love your country.

  71. Mary Poplins Says:

    #36 Frank

Bush works for the American people. We are the decider not Bush. We need to bring our Troops home NOW. The War is LOST as Reid said. I see Malki is putting a stop to the wall. It is about time he stepped up to the plate and was Iraqis leader. This is not Bushes country. We went into a ILLEGAL UNJUST WAR for OIL and to make Bushies CRONIES RICHER.

Why does anyone believe anything OLD BILLIE KRISTOL the neocon nut says.

  72. Thor Watchman Says:

This just goes to show you how frightened the neocons and their wingnut accomplices are by somebody who tells the truth.

We were told that we would stand down when the Iraqis stood up. Now we come to find out that the Iraqis are not capable of standing up, now or later.

Hence it follows as the night the day, we will not stand down as long as the neocons and their wingnut accomplices stay in control.

Is there any appreciable difference between what Senator Reid stated Thursday (04/19/2007) and again Friday (04/20/2007) and what Tokyo Rose said during WWII? Hasn't Nancy Pelosi, in essence, engaged in the same rhetoric? I realized they were both elected by their constituents and Tokyo Rose was not, but does being elected really excuse treasonous acts and statements? The actions by Reid and Pelosi seem flagrant enough to negate their immunity from prosecution while performing the duties of their office.

  89. Mark Says:

Is it my imagination, that these neocons hate happiness, hate life, hate themselves? So many of them seem to be in the closet, self loathing Roy Cohns of the present day. The sins of the father are destroying our world. Wake up!

  90. tubino Says:

What I'd like to see is someone pointing out to Kristol or other supporter that the US is not fighting a war, it's occupying a country against the will of a majority of the population.

    Comment by John Lobenstein — April 22, 2007 @ 9:35 pm

What Harry Reid said is pretty much what William F. Buckley and other intelligent people are saying. Idiots like you, in the 28%tile, which is a minority, need to wake the fuck up. This war is over and Dubya lost it. Get a grip, moron.

  92. tubino Says:

Is there any appreciable difference between what Senator Reid stated Thursday (04/19/2007) and again Friday (04/20/2007) and what Tokyo Rose said during WWII?

Of course there is a difference. In WWII, the US was fighting sovereign countries that sought to capture other lands. When they surrendered, the war was over.

In Iraq, the US is occupying a country. The rulers are captured or dead. The population increasingly resents the US, and the situation worsens by the month, with 50,000 leaving each month.

    See the difference?

  93. kasinca Says:

William F. Buckley, a famous conservative, said the war was lost a year ago. Is there a difference in what he said than Tokyo Rose?

  94. Eargy Earp Says:

Yes, and Reid's statement is more accurate than anything Trent Lott ever said also.

Kristol is a war monger, as is plain for all to see. Anyone who is against war is the enemy to him.

  95. Eargy Earp Says:

    Lot of good comments here.

Yes, the war was over and the Ba'athist govenrment defeated long ago.

Leaving Iraq to the Iraqis is anc can be the only true eventual goal!

  96. Dan Says:

    Eargy Earp:

How can anyone doubt the following statement is, at the very least, "accurate" (regardless of its claimed racist sentiment): "If America had elected Strom Thurmond as President, we wouldn't have all these problems."

  97. Dan Says:

That's like denying there were lynchings in the South. I mean, I thought you guys were the "reality-based" crowd?

  98. Kilo Says:

Hey Nico, why didn't you lead with this headline?
Bill Kristol Suggests Harry Reid Was Behind 9/11.

Sure, yet another transcript where no such suggestion occurs, but considering there's no correction to where you've done this before that's no problem, right ?

  99. feckless Says:

The handbills of the Segregationist party in 1948 were specifically "pro-lynching". If douchewads like Kristol are going to trot out Trent everytime they point to a media storm (poor Lott lost the leadership of the GOP because he advocated Lynching in 2001, but he was allowed to keep his Senate seat, boo hoo)

  100. Phil Accordino Says:

Which of the following should not be ignored or fired: Kristol, Cheney.
Bush, Pearle. Wolfowitz, Rove, Rush, Hannity, Lott, O'Riley, Gonzales,
    Coulter, Hatch, Blair, or McCain.

    You believe that

"Kristol is simply a cheney/rove puppet..."

    You said:

"Anyone with an ounce of sense knows that he (Kristol) is nothing but an asskissing front for the latest hype of the Bush Crime Family."

I disagree with both of your comments which relegate Kristal to a shill for this Administration.

He is a lot more important than that! In fact it might be turned around to say that he is one of the driving forces behind BushCo. A puppet he is not. In these interviews he is defending his own views and ideology not BushCos.
And of course Irving Kristol, his father, is one of the founders of the neo-con movement originating with Leo Strauss and using Machiavellian ideology.

Here is part of his bio from Wikipedia

    Weekly Standard

After the Republican sweep of both houses of Congress in 1994, arguably a result of the debacle over health care reform, Kristol established, along with neoconservative John Podhoretz and with financing from Rupert Murdoch, the conservative periodical The Weekly Standard. In 1997, he founded, with Robert Kagan, the Project for the New American Century (PNAC), a movement credited in part for some of the foreign policy decisions of the Bush administration as evidenced by their 1998 letter to US President Bill Clinton advocating military action in Iraq, to "protect our vital interests in the Gulf". He is also a member of the conservative think tank the American Enterprise Institute from which the Bush administration has borrowed over two dozen members to fill various government offices and panels. Kristol is currently chairman of PNAC and editor of The Weekly Standard.

  102. bernie Says:

The war was lost a long time ago. Some are finally figuring that out.

  103. April Says:

Bill Kristol simply speaks the truth: What is good for Israel is Good! Period...

  104. CruzBustamove Says:

The Bushies will leave Iraq as soon as they figure out a way to take the oil with them.
