Vice President Cheney and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) exchanged words today in back-to-back news conferences. Cheney accused Reid of “defeatism” and called Reid’s speech yesterday “uninformed and misleading.”
Reid assailed President Bush for again sending out his “attack dog, also known as Dick Cheney.”
Watch it:
Below, a rebuttal of Cheney’s main attacks:
CHENEY: “Yesterday, Senator Reid said the troop surge was against the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group. That is plainly false. The Iraq Study Group report was explicitly favorable toward a troop surge to secure Baghdad.”
FACT: Iraq Study Group says escalation will “not solve the fundamental cause of violence in Iraq.” The Iraq Study Group said that a “short-term redeployment” of troops into Baghdad could be part of a larger military, economic, and diplomatic plan to wind down the war. But the Bush escalation policy is not short-term. The ISG also states, “Sustained increases in U.S. troop levels would not solve the fundamental cause of violence in Iraq… As another American general told us, if the Iraqi government does not make political progress, ‘all the troops in the world will not provide security.’”
CHENEY: “Senator Reid said there should be a regional conference on Iraq. Apparently he doesn’t know that there is going to be one next week.”
FACT: Regional conferences mean little without diplomacy. Reid criticized Bush yesterday for failing to “launch any meaningful diplomatic efforts.” The fact that there is a regional conference means little if the U.S. chooses not to engage Iraq’s neighbors. An account from last month’s regional conference: “So they went, shook hands and chatted briefly. And that was the sum of the direct interaction between American and Iranian delegates at a long-awaited, day-long regional summit on Iraq today in Baghdad. … U.S. and Iranian officials said there were no private conversations of any substance.”
CHENEY: “Senator Reid said he doesn’t have real substantive meetings with the president. Yet immediately following last week’s meeting at the White House, he said, ‘It was a good exchange. Everyone voiced their considered opinion about the war in Iraq.’”
FACT: These two statements don’t contradict. In both, Reid simply says that Bush gave his opinion on Iraq. One is more diplomatic than the other, but they don’t contradict.
CHENEY: “What’s most troubling about Senator Reid’s comments yesterday is his defeatism. Indeed, last week he said the war is already lost. And the timetable legislation that he is now pursuing would guarantee defeat.”
FACT: Americans think Cheney is wrong. From a 4/19 Fox News poll: “[D]o you think it is accurate to compare withdrawal with surrender?” Yes: 33 percent | No: 61 percent
CNN’s Dana Bash reported that Cheney’s Capitol Hill press conference was “virtually unprecedented,” but that war critics “aren’t worried about it.” As one said in an email, “I wish Dick Cheney would come out every single day.”
Wasn’t he supposed be at the Doctor’s office today. COME ON KUCINICH!!!
April 24th, 2007 at 4:15 pmI thought Kucinich said that Cheney had a medical crisis today?
April 24th, 2007 at 4:16 pmShouldn’t one of those blood clots be moving towards the brain?
April 24th, 2007 at 4:16 pmI think the clot has moved fom his leg to his brain.
April 24th, 2007 at 4:17 pmsorry to be picky, but that’s LITANY…

April 24th, 2007 at 4:20 pmMr. Cheney,
I would tell you to “go fcuk yourself” but that would require that at least one of the participants be a man, so you do not qualify.
Senator Reid,
Thank you Majority Leader Reid for speaking the truth and outlining realistic objectives and a strategy for ending the travesty that is known as the “Iraq War”.
It stops here!
April 24th, 2007 at 4:20 pmIsn’t he like at around 14 percent approval ?
April 24th, 2007 at 4:21 pmAfter all that he’s been directlly involved in . . . why he’s still in office I’m not sure.
Impeach already .
When Cheney comes out — you know the administration is feeling the pinch and needs to try to attack anyone about anything. This administration is in deep sh!t.
April 24th, 2007 at 4:21 pmI’m not going to get into a name calling match with the administration’s chief attack dog,” Reid said.
Give em Hell Harry!
April 24th, 2007 at 4:21 pmBefore Cheney CAN be impeached, he will be retired “for medical reasons”…. Clearly, his DVT has migrated from his leg to his brain and is obscuring his thought processes. This guy’s a certified bull dog and no one is listening to his BS any longer. He’d be totally irrelevant and a lameduck right now and not worth Kucinich’s time to impeach except that when Dubya IS impeached, the american people certainly want nothing to do with Cheney becoming president. Both of these guys are known liars and losers….lameducks and irrelevant to the american people.
We need a “lack of confidence” vote of the american people regarding the continuation of having Bush & Cheney represent us.
April 24th, 2007 at 4:23 pmI’m an American, and I know Cheney is wrong.
Give him hell, Harry. Don’t let “Dick” get away with this crap.
April 24th, 2007 at 4:23 pm(Insert asinine contrary statement her)
April 24th, 2007 at 4:23 pm“I thought his speech yesterday was unfortunate, that his comments were uninformed and misleading,†Mr. Cheney said.
Kettle, meet pot.
“Leaders should make decisions based on the security interests of our country, not on the interests of their political party.â€
Pot, meet kettle.
Darth is on the warpath, as ever.
April 24th, 2007 at 4:24 pmYou know how they say people resemble their dogs?? Look at Cheney the next time he is regurgitating his drivel on television. He looks like either a pit bull or a bulldog and the only time he’s “unleashed” on the public is when the WH is is in deep doggie-doo! With Rove now going under investigation by the Office of Special Counsel, I’d say that they’re going to be mired in their own excrement for a very long time. I can catch a whiff of the acrid, sour aroma of decaying human excrement now!
April 24th, 2007 at 4:25 pmIMPEACH THIS MOTHER FU*KER ALREADY!!!!!!
April 24th, 2007 at 4:25 pmYou know what would have made Cheney’s attack really, really effective?
If he hadn’t spent the last five years repeatedly lying and getting caught.
Nico, I think you missed the part where Dick Cheney reported that it has been confirmed that Harry Reid met with Mohammed Atta in Prague.
Oh, wait, nevermind, there has never been an attempt by the administration to link Harry Reid with defeatism. We just imagined that.
April 24th, 2007 at 4:25 pmHe’s on the ropes!
April 24th, 2007 at 4:26 pmHis doctors visit this morning appears to have been “leaked” as a medical crisis, just long enough for wind of it to go around Washington, and for Kucinich to cancel the impeachment press conference….
Check Chainee’s appointment record with the doctor, likely he made the appointment after learning Kucinich’s schedule………..
Is anyone sure Cheney hasn’t lied about his age on his paperwork? I’d swear his “effective age” is at least 15 years more than his “actual age” according to him. He looks like he’s approaching 80, for goodness sakes. There’s no fool like an “old fool” - especially when it’s the “old fool on the hill”.
April 24th, 2007 at 4:27 pmMurtha on Cheney…
“I like guys who got five deferments and (have) never been there and send people to war, and then don’t like to hear suggestions about what needs to be done”
Cheney is no friend of the men and women who actually fight the wars that this Chickenhawk vice president so shamelessly — and disingenuously — promotes.
April 24th, 2007 at 4:27 pmSee Darth Dance….See Darth Spew….Isn’t it going to be primo to watch The Dick, Cheney, in his new “lameduck impeachment dance”?
April 24th, 2007 at 4:28 pmIt’s like having Richard Speck come out as a public spokesman for lighter sentencing guidelines.
April 24th, 2007 at 4:28 pm#11 - exaclty. When they have to pull the shooter out from his “undisclosed location”, you know things are getting desperate. I’m sure geirgey is busy having a tantrum because Harry Reid isn’t backing down
April 24th, 2007 at 4:29 pm“Cheney called Reid’s speech yesterday “uninformed and misleading.â€
This from a guy who keeps Faux News on wherever he goes.
April 24th, 2007 at 4:29 pmAnyone (Bush) who would send Cheney (aka Mr. Credibility) out to attack the messenger is seriously out of touch with the American people.
Or they are drinking.
Or just desperate.
But we already knew that.
April 24th, 2007 at 4:29 pmCheney’s runnin’ scared, I’d say if he resorts to using a fictitious appointment with his doctor as a lame excuse to quell Kucinich and the american public’s call for his head. It can wait until tomorrow although I briefly heard Wolf Blitzler blaring from the other room about the Cheney impeachment charges….stay tuned….this is going to be a really BEEG show!
April 24th, 2007 at 4:29 pm“FACT: Americans think Cheney is wrong. From a 4/19 Fox News poll: “[D]o you think it is accurate to compare withdrawal with surrender?†Yes: 33 percent | No: 61 percent”
oh this is too much…..so thinkprogress.org and its liberal readers spent countless articles, and hours attacking Foxnews as not being a real news organization and having no legitimacy, yet they use a Foxnews poll in order to prove that thinkprogress.org is right?
HAHAHAHA!!! i knew it, thinkprogress.org does consider its liberal idiots to be useful fools that can be easily manipulated.
everything else that thinkprogress.org said against Cheney is half truths. Once again, though, thinkprogress.org is counting on its poorly educated liberal readers to not know this.
and about the poll, when day in and day out Americans are inundated with bad news from Iraq, most people will be convinced that things are going bad. Simple fact of life. When the media only shows one side of the coin, what do you expect Americans to believe. We all know, expect it seems thinkprogress.org and the wacky liberals, that if you only see one side of the coin, you are going to believe that only that side exists.
Most Americans get their news from the 30 minutes half hour news, do you really think this will educate Americans to fully know what is going on in Iraq? 2 minute clips of Iraq don’t educate anyone about iraq and when the 2 minute clip day in and day out is all bad….well what do you think will happen to public opinion.
April 24th, 2007 at 4:29 pmYeparoo….5 Deferrment Cheney is on the ropes now!!
April 24th, 2007 at 4:30 pmI think every Dem, when referencing the Veep, should always call him “Crazy Dick Cheney” or “Crazy Cheney” or “our lovable by senile Vice President” or “Disaster Dick Cheney.”
April 24th, 2007 at 4:32 pm#24— excellent comparison. Any of you under thirty folks get that one? just curious
April 24th, 2007 at 4:32 pmAnd Cheney has been right about what in the failed war in Iraq?
April 24th, 2007 at 4:33 pmYeah, I’d like to see Cheney on TV every day also. Maybe Cheney and Rohrbacher and Boehner and William Kristol and Duncan Hunter can appear all together on TV so Americans can get a good look at them.

This is typical of why the Democratic party is constantly on the defensive. The GOP knows that if they say something with enough authority, most Americans are stupid and will believe it is therefore true.
Now I don’t like the GOP at all, but come on Reid! If you’re going to lob a grenade statement like that, shouldn’t you do some homework and take this opportunity given to you in front of the camera to back it up?
Cheney gets up there and spews lies as usual in a very authoritative and confident way - obviously a prepared statement since he was reading it. And all Reid can do as a rebuttal is call Cheney Bush’s attack Dog? OUCH!
WTF - why didn’t Reid have a statement prepared with the facts that Thinkprogress has to rebuke Cheney?
Come on Dems! How about a little forethought on strategy? Other than lying, that is the only thing the GOP has to make it a formidable political party - a knowledgeable and working plan of strategy to pursue there own agenda. As much as DEMS and mod GOPS hate it, it works.

Jake, you pathetic little coward, is this the only way you can win an argument?
April 24th, 2007 at 4:42 pmIt isn’t something we can poll the American people about. Withdrawing troops from an ongoing war is always defeat. Just because a large percentage of Americans don’t understand the meaning of defeat doesn’t mean that the Libs plan isn’t defeat. When Reid came out and said the troops lost the war and we need to withdraw from Iraq, how could anyone read that any other way then that the Libs feel the troops lost the war and we need to retreat. Please put your political spin on this to make it look like retreating and calling our military a loser somehow a victory. I really want to see that spin.

April 24th, 2007 at 4:50 pmRoger,
Your being blatantly dishonest. Find the quote where Reid said the “Troops lost the war.”
Find it, or quit saying it. It’s very deceptive of you to keep saying that when you know it isn’t true. Argue the merits or move on.
April 24th, 2007 at 4:50 pmI am not Jake or TripMaster Monkey. I’m smarter than both of them combined.
April 24th, 2007 at 4:50 pmThe new Repuke talking point is Democrats want to “surrender”
I heard that Stepford beeyotch Dana Perino say it the other day.
Surrender means our troops lose the battle and yield to the enemy in the field. White flag and all that.
Redeployment out of Iraq is not surrendering, our troops were never beaten in Iraq. It is just time for them to get out of Iraq.
So, the Repukes are insulting our troops by saying they will “surrender” in Iraq. Repukes hate our troops!!

What Reid said: “I believe myself that the secretary of state, secretary of defense and — you have to make your own decisions as to what the president knows — (know) this war is lost and the surge is not accomplishing anything as indicated by the extreme violence in Iraq yesterday,”
Big difference between that and “the troops lost the war”. It’s obvious to anyone with a brain that Bush and his administration have bungled this war from the beginning.
April 24th, 2007 at 4:54 pmTom3:
What percentage of Americans agree with you and Reid that “Iraq is lost”? Last I checked, it was a whopping 9%.
April 24th, 2007 at 4:57 pmRoger_Roger,
Uh, but we ARE defeated. It took us less time to defeat Nazi Germany AND Japan in WWII than this futile mess in Iraq, and we’re NOT EVEN CLOSE to being proclaimed the victor. Sure, it took us no time at all to topple the Ba’ath party, because that was an easily defined enemy with specific targets to take out. Fighting a concept like “terror” is way more difficult, because 1. You perpetuate the culture of martyrdom present in Islamic extremism by continuing to fight and kill, 2. Kill one, and ten are ready to jump in and take their place, and 3. These terrorist organizations are far too fluid and lacking in structure to easily identify.
April 24th, 2007 at 4:57 pmWho the h*ll is Reid to call VP Cheney an “attack dog”… didn’t he call Pres. Bush a loser in front of high school students?

Fight WHO?????
Who are the terrorists?????
Obviously, no one can identify them through military force or they would be gone by now……
ALL terrorists need to be identified through Investigative means……
I guess you think the best way to identify the bank robber is to blow up the entire bank???
Otherwise how do you know who the bank robber is?????
The “insurgents” are mostly Iraqi’s and they are attacking groups opposite of themselves….. This is not something we can deal with MILITARILY!!!!!
Since YOU never served in the military, I’m assuming since your a Republican and for this war, YOU obviously have no idea what the military trains for…..
Here is a HINT….. It’s not fighting a CIVIL WAR between factions in another country.

April 24th, 2007 at 5:11 pmBack on topic though, I thought this was far more damaging to Reid (no wonder why Think Progress left it out):
“THE VICE PRESIDENT: I usually avoid press comment when I’m up here, but I felt so strongly about what Senator Reid said in the last couple of days, that I thought it was appropriate that I come out today and make a statement that I think needs to be made.
I thought his speech yesterday was unfortunate, that his comments were uninformed and misleading. Senator Reid has taken many positions on Iraq. He has threatened that if the President vetoes the current pending supplemental legislation, that he will send up Senator Russ Feingold’s bill to de-fund Iraq operations altogether.
Yet only last November, Senator Reid said there would be no cutoff of funds for the military in Iraq. So in less than six months’ time, Senator Reid has gone from pledging full funding for the military, then full funding but with conditions, and then a cutoff of funding — three positions in five months on the most important foreign policy question facing the nation and our troops.”

Who knows which “position” he actually believes? If you think that is “promot[ing] your agenda” then I guess that’s all that counts for you. In the end, I want our elected officials to do the right thing and protect our country, popular or not.
And, that’s why I believe Bush / Cheney are more reputable despite the mistakes made. We obviously disagree about how wrong they got it, whether to apologize, and want to do from here on out.

ANKARA, Turkey - The United States and other world powers may be ready to allow Iran to keep some of its uranium enrichment program intact instead of demanding its complete dismantling, foreign government officials said Tuesday.
The United States might accept a version of “cold standby” — allowing a set number of centrifuges to remain standing and assembled in series but not running, a diplomat said. Iran, he said, would likely push for keeping the machines operating, if not producing enriched uranium.

One of the things that you have to appreciate about Messrs. Bush and Cheney is the business opportunities they have created as a result of their own actions. This Email To Me, Harry, And America, Direct From A Grunt On The Front Lines Of Ramadi, Is Just Hours Old.
Corporal Tyler Rock, 1/6 Charlie Company, on the left, at my old home, Camp Hurricane Point, Ramadi.
“yeah i know how you feel. its going to be very weird leaving this place and going back to america. weve been here for almost an entire year and have lived in the center of it the whole time. its crazy that when we got here it was so hectic and now its calmed down so much. so it was awesome to be able to see that turn out.
yeah news worth reporting…. well ramadi was once dubbed by everyone as the worst city in the world. but we have done such a great job here that all the families in the area have worked with us on driving out the insurgency and that we work directly with the IA and the IP’s. the city has been cleaned up so well that the IP’s do most of the patrols now and we go out with them to hand out candy and toys to the children. you can tell that the people want us here to protect them from the thugs and gangs (insurgents). granted they would rather have peace and quit but they know that if we arent here they will be thrown around by the insurgents. a good example is this one mission we did. long story short we got blown up in multiple buildings and had to run into a families house. i spent my christmas holidays covered in ash from the mortar fire and the IED’s, sleeping under a dirty rug i found in the house. everyone was sleeping way to close for comfort just to stay warm. anyways. a family was there and they obviously didnt want us there. atleast at first. the daughters were very sick so our corpsman treated them. they didnt have electricity so we got them a generator for power, they were cold so we got them gas heaters, we got them food and water and then we gave them $500. by the end of the week long visit with them we were drinking tea with them. when we left we cleaned their house better than it was when we got there. i even have pictures with the family. they told us that they liked marines and they would help us as much as they could and they gave us some information on the insurgents in the area. we ended up catching a HUGE target down the road from there house because of it.
yeah and i got a qoute for that douche harry reid. these families need us here. obviously he has never been in iraq. or atleast the area worth seeing. the parts where insurgency is rampant and the buildings are blown to pieces. we need to stay here and help rebuild. if iraq didnt want us here then why do we have IP’s voluntering everyday to rebuild their cities. and working directly with us too. same with the IA’s. it sucks that iraqi’s have more patriotism for a country that has turned to complete shit more than the people in america who drink starbucks everyday. we could leave this place and say we are sorry to the terrorists. and then we could wait for 3,000 more american civilians to die before we say “hey thats not nice†again. and the sad thing is after we WIN this war. people like him will say he was there for us the whole time.
April 24th, 2007 at 7:07 pmand for messages back home. i have a wife back home who is going through a tough time. i just cant wait to be back home and see everyone. haha and i cant wait to go back home and get some starbucks. i love it when those people serve me. hahahaâ€
NO!!!!! In the first place, polling was not as ubiquitous as Now. And..If FDR had suggested we quit world war II, he certainly wouldn’t have been reelected 4 times, and probably would have been impeached. AND….Remember that congress actually DECLARED WAR back then.
April 24th, 2007 at 7:11 pm“It’s like saying it would be worth it to debate a kid on the playground concerning worldly affairs. It might be fun for a laugh, but it would be pretty pointless. At the moment she realized that once again (as she was with al franken) completely outclassed, she would call me a “faggot†or something similar. Then would attempt to make light of a patently homophobic remark by calling it satire and saying she was just kidding. No thanks

It’s so easy to throw rocks from a distance. A kid on the playground? Ha, ha ha, ha! She’s an accomplished Constitutional lawyer and was part of a group of lawyers who got Clinton impeached! You, and ANY liberal on this blog, would be a toy for her. Just read some of your nuty comments!
April 24th, 2007 at 7:14 pmThank you, Badger. Finally! That was like pulling teeth. We at least agree that FDR should not have pulled out of WWII because of a couple point drop in the polls. We’ll have to agree to disagree on Iraq.
