Senate considering Gonzales ‘no confidence’ vote.

“Senate Democratic leaders are seriously considering bringing a resolution to the floor expressing no confidence in Gonzales,” Roll Call reports. “‘I don’t think [Gonzales] can survive, no matter what the president says,’ said the source. The vote would be nonbinding and have no substantive impact, but it would force all Republican Senators into the politically uncomfortable position of saying publicly whether they continue to support Gonzales in the wake of the scandal surrounding the firings of eight U.S. attorneys.”

  1. JRoyale says:

I think this is a good move and if we get at least 67 votes, Nancy should move to impeach Gonzales lying ass the next day.

  2. Punchy says:

    brilliant idea.

  4. Jimmy Wales says:

LOL — nonbinding and have no substantive impact — elections have consequences, huh?

  6. Republicans are the Fear and Smear Party says:

Hmmmm…which party line will republicans tow? Will they vote for him because they’re republicans or will they vote against him because they want to be re-elected?

  7. sweetgumroot says:

    Moving forward, step by step.

  8. Crump's Brother says:

    Took long enough

  9. Tom3 says:

Anything that puts the Repukes in an uncomfortable position DOES have a substantial impact.

Repukes will have to choose between their loyalty to the Chimp…or keeping their jobs in 08.

Not every action has to be monumental in and of itself to be impactful in the big scheme of things. And I, for one, will applaud and celebrate these little actions to advance the cause of transparency and integrity in government.

  11. Bob says:

Oh no, not a nonbinding resolution! That’s worked so well in the past, I’m sure Bush will be shaking in his urban cowboy boots. Come on, Congress, sht or get off the pot!

Do they have to rape a 13 year old on national tv before their held responsible for anything?

  12. veritas says:

Go for the jugular, Dems! They’d be rabid if this were happening to them! No holds barred – take off the kid gloves and get down to business. The american people also gave the Dems a “confidence vote” to incite them to bring justice to the american people and rid this government of corrupt insiders.

  13. veritas says:

As for Alberto VO5…..just like Rumsfeld – soon people will be saying: “Alberto who?”. It’s not that he JUST become totally “irrelevant” as an AG; he’s always BEEN totally “irrelevant” as our AG.

  14. veritas says:

And once the votes are in and a move is made to impeach Gonzales, then comes Kucinich’s impeachment against Cheney….and then, last but certainly not least, and certainly THE one where the buck should stop, will be the impeachment of this president.

  15. Raven says:

Hearing by hearing, resolution by resolution, whittling away at the foundations of corruption this administration is teetering upon.
This is the way democracy works.
The incompetent and corrupt officials have had every opportunity to act honorably and come clean, and have chosen not to do so.
    They will suffer the consequences.

Raven — just wait until the next GOP Congress does the same to a Democrat in the Oval Office.

Another waste of time, effort and our tax dollars. It is time for the actual citizens to clear house and start fresh!

  19. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

Any actions by Congress designed to bring BushCo to accountability MUST have some Republican support. The Democrats must rally public support by an onslaught of small resolutions and investigations which highlight what is wrong. BushCo “catapulted the propoganda” and this must be countered with the truth BEFORE impeachment or completing cutting off funding for the occupation of Iraq have any chance to muster the super majority needed for success.

We progressives/liberals must walk a fine line. We need to keep the pressure high on our representatives but we also need to applaud movement in the right direction.

Jimmy, don’t you think Gonzales and his rulings are bad for America?
Does everything have to be about party politics?
If you answer yes, than we know you are a troll…

If the next Democratic President acts like Bush, then the Congress should be just as tough then. Party on, there Jimmy.

We’ll need ear plugs to drown out your wails, jimmy…………

  29. Crump's Brother says:

    Jimmy Wales,

Do you have confidence in Gonzalez? Would you keep him on? He either knew what was going on, in which case he lied to Congress, or he has no control of his own employees.

you would hire that guy? Your happy that a guy like that is in charge of protecting you from criminals?

  30. Jimmy Wales says:

  31. Dale says:

Wow, the Dem’s are *really* making an impact, aren’t they? I suppose all these non-binding votes are the reason they were elected?

  32. hellinabucket says:

Great points Raven. This is just one of many steps being taken. It’s all in the open and under oath.

If / when the Dems abuse their power in the future, I want the Republicans (or other) call them out on it and defend the constitution just as the Democrats are doing now.

We survive as a Democracy only as long as we defend the democracy. When we allow others to think for us we give up our voices. The Republicans have dominated the subject matter and told us what to say.

I think this is a corner turning experience.

  33. Jimmy Wales says:

Regardless of whether the next Democratic President abuses her power in the future, the next Republican Congress will exact revenge.

  36. Nirvision says:

I applaud this resolution-regardless of whether it’s binding or not- simply because it forces the Republicans to make a choice they’d rather not make.

So far so good, I say.

The new motto of the Democratic party.

  38. JRoyale says:

Jake, in the unlikely event that the Republicans actually manage to recapture Congress in my lifetime, I won’t mind having a GOP Congress impeach the AG if the AG has such a terrible memory loss that (s)he has to tell Congress “I don’t recall” 70+ times. The GOP would be doing the Democratic President and the country a favor.

Please, defend Mr. DeLay’s accusations of Treason against Pelosi and Reid compared to what he said in 1999, thanks.

  40. VerbalKint says:

I like it. Git ‘er done!

  41. Dale says:

#39, why are you asking about DeLay on this thread? Try the other thread.

  42. mikeandjeffsmom says:

If our next president, regardless of party, is as immoral and criminal as Bushco I hope that the Congress WILL do the same. And if we have a Democratic president and there is reason to believe that s/he started a war for no reason, stole elections, obstructed justice, gave no-bid contracts to their buddies, lost $$billions in “reconstruction” funding, etc etc. then the Repubs should go to it. Alleged bl**jobs do not count, however.

  43. Chris L says:

I think this is an important first step. If the Senate can get enough backing behind this, maybe the House will take a stronger step. This is the first time in a long time that so many people on both sides of the political aisle have been in agreement, so it’s now just a matter of scheduling the formalities.

  44. bob (not the hacker) says:

  49. Angry One says:

With the exploding scandals at the Justice Department and the World Bank enveloping his administration, President Bush voiced “full confidence” in Alberto Gonzales and Paul Wolfowitz this week. But as history has shown, there is no more certain confirmation of the criminality, ethical-wrong doing or imminent departure of a Bush team player than the President’s expression of confidence in him.

    For the details, see:
    “President Bush, Confidence Man.”
