Senior conservative will oppose Rice subpoena.

Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA), the ranking Republican on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said today he will not support the decision of Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) to subpoena Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, “marking the first time this year that he has broken with the committee’s top Democrat on a significant committee issue.” Apparently Davis knows everything he needs to know about the run-up to war:

“Subpoenaing Secretary [Condoleezza] Rice to discuss the Iraq-uranium issue is duplicative of multiple investigations that have already been concluded,” [Davis] said.

Davis accused [Waxman] of overstepping his bounds to call on Rice. Waxman wants her to discuss in more detail how a National Security Council aide inserted incorrect intelligence indicating that Iraq sought uranium from Africa into the President Bush’s 2003 State of the Union address.

Since it’s such a big waste of time, I guess we’ll all be spared Davis’ sanctimonious presence at the hearing, right?

Davis is still trying to hide the wrongs of Bushco.
    The big question is:
Why try to block the subpoena, if there is nothing to hide?

If Rice’s testimony ONCE was not enough for you Bush-haters, why would TWICE be? How about if Rice testifies every day from now until January 20, 2009? Would THAT be enough?

Actually Frank, it wouldn’t be enough, because it would mean that the Bush administration survives until then. It won’t be enough until Bush is impeached and thrown out of office, and criminal indictments are lodged against his many co-conspirators. But you wouldn’t understand that, Frank, because you hate America. You hate the Constitution and you hate the rule of law.

    Comment by Repo-whores-suk — April 24, 2007 @ 8:43 pm

Yep, doesn’t make ANY difference if the GOP members have a problem with it, Waxman can issue subpoenas all by his lonesome, and the minority party can do absolutely NOTHING about it

And the best part, is that the rules changes giving Waxman this power were implemented during Clinton’s Admin to let Dan Burton issue any and all subpoenas he wanted, even for such burning issues as the Clinton’s Christmas Card list

What makes this anti-Clinton hysteria biting the GOP’s ass even more enjoyable is that, even when the GOP knew it was headed for a political Little Big Horn with the November elections, they didn’t change the rules back to their pre-Clinton status

It’s just too richly ironic that all that anti-Clinton hysteria is now biting the very idiots who pushed it so hard for so long

    How’s that irony taste, trolls?

Please tell me when Secretary Rice testified under oath about what she knew and when she knew it, regarding why the infamous 16 words about Iraq seeking uranium from Africa were in a draft SOTU speech, then removed, then back in for Bush’s SOTU address on 1-28-03, and then retracted after Joseph Wilsons bombshell NY Times op-ed debunked the whole sham?
If this is no big deal why was Joseph Wilson smeard so vehemently by the Bush Admin?
Why was Valerie Plame Wilson and her colleagues betrayed by their government?
The Bush Admin and all their lackeys will continue to dodge, dip, duck, dive, and dodge this wrench as long as they’re able. Why? Can you say T-R-E-A-S-0-N?

  58. dog-walker says:

yep, waxman can issue the paper on his own say-so.

    this from TIME:

As the new chairman of the House Government Reform Committee, Waxman will have free rein to investigate, as he puts it, “everything that the government is involved with.” And the funny thing is, Waxman can thank the Republicans for the unique set of levers he will hold. Under a rules change they put through in the days when they used the panel to make Bill Clinton’s life miserable, the leader of Government Reform is the only chairman who can issue subpoenas without a committee vote. Then Chairman Dan Burton–who famously re-enacted the suicide of Clinton deputy White House counsel Vince Foster by shooting at what he called a “head-like thing” (later widely reported to be a melon) in his backyard–issued 1,089 such unilateral subpoenas in six years.

  61. JRoyale says:

Poor Davis is going to learn again that “Elections have Consequences”.

It matters not one whit who he thinks Waxman should subpoena.

And it would seem to me if Congress can subpoena an Xmas card list, they can sure bring the Secretary of State up the Hill. I say in chains, if necessary. Designer ones, of course, that match her shoes.

  62. JRoyale says:

And Davis is wrong. Condi has never been quizzed by people that are actually interested in the truth instead of covering for the Decider.

  63. Exley says:

The questions Waxman has said he wants Rice to address have already been answered by her several times, including (i) at her Senate confirmation hearing; (ii) in the 2005 WMD Robb-Silberman Commission report, and (iii) in the report on pre-war intelligence by the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Don’t forget the aluminum tube comment – on CNN’s Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer. Sept.8, 2002

‘We do know that there have been shipments going into Iran, for instance — into Iraq, for instance, of aluminum tubes that really are only suited to — high-quality aluminum tools that are only really suited for nuclear weapons programs, centrifuge programs.’ Then she went on to make the “smoking gun” / “mushroom cloud” analogy.

This is something she and the administration knew not to be true. Regardless, Dick Cheney repeated it as fact on Meet the Press, citing an article written by the now discredited administration mouthpiece, Judith Miller, in the NY Times.

The New York Times later writes that “almost a year before (her statements on CNN), Ms. Rice’s staff had been told that the government’s foremost nuclear experts seriously doubted that the tubes were for nuclear weapons…. The experts, at the Energy Department, believed the tubes were likely intended for small artillery rockets.”

This is one of the biggest lies. She needs to be held to account.

  82. LetThemEatShoes says:

    SENATOR ROBERTS:

“I don’t think there should be any doubt that we have now heard it all regarding prewar intelligence,” he quips. “I think that it would be a monumental waste of time to replow this ground any further.”

This was said in response to a question asking when phase II of the Senate Report on Prewar Intelligence examining how Bush manipulated intelligence for his phony war.

    It’s the cover -up!

I would like to see Condiliar testify everyday until she actually spits out the truth.

  83. Get out of Jail free says:

Soooo…..if she decides that she doesn’t need to comply to a subpoena made in the legal, constitutionally prescribed way, the rest of us don’t either? If an attorney were to knock on my door because I’m selling knock offs of their products locally and cutting them out of a market (formerly illegally), can I tell them….nah…you’ve done business here long enough. Sorry. But if you could send some new product my way, that’d rock..thanks.

Cuz if so, it’s back to the wild west! Yee ha! Let the smartest folks win…and we start with shooting all the lawyers and politicians. Honestly..if they are able to brush of an investigation by the body of the congress that is supposed to be the voice of the people, our only outlet to check the government, as the other 2/3rds of government branches are privatized, then why should we have to obey any laws.

This is a question that I think needs to be posed if Condi decides to not comply with the subpoena and continue the correspondance in letters. And again…if she doesn’t comply…well, that should be ushering in a new era with a whole new batch of freedoms for us. So I guess it’s actually win win either way..ooh..forgot about the five guys running American media.

    Guess we’re screwed.

  84. lylenews says:

If Lieing Leezy does testify, it will start a new round of questioning concerning the way the committees were operated during the Republican Guard majority. Pat Roberts, Arlen Specter and Sensenbrener are now being shown to have whitewashed anything involving Cheney before the Congress changed majority in January. Rice will be shown for her perjury.
