Soros’s soft money contributions to 527s have disappointed some former allies. “He’s made a decision to go from being part of the solution to being part of the problem,” says Fred Wertheimer, CEO of Washington-based Democracy 21. “Our concern is that 527s are becoming a vehicle whereby large contributors can gain undue influence, and Soros has chosen to make himself the poster child for 527s.”

Possibly MoveOn.org began as a grass roots movement. I don’t know about that. But, obviously it hasn’t stayed that way. And, yes, Soros has the right to contribute to any cause he chooses as long as it’s legal. O’Reilly is just making public what Soros does behind the scenes. Nothing wrong with that either.

Smearing can also be what Michael Moore did in his movie that lied multiple times. Smearing can be what Dan Rather did in inventing news about Bush’s military record. The left if not above it, never has and never will.

You can point out inconsistencies without smearing. Smearing is what was done to John Kerry, for example. It’s one thing to have a little verbal joust with some anonymous person on a forum like this, quite another to create snarky disinformation campaigns slandering good people. It shouldn’t be necessary to create lies about someone just because you have political disagreement. If that is the only way to defeat them, it says something about the depth of your position.

It’s an interesting topic: is Bush stupid but not evil, or is he smart but using a cover of stupidity to mask his evil nature. I’m of the opinion that he is more stupid than evil, that his evil is the by-product of his stupidness. I don’t think you can easily fake his level of public stupidity for six years, and if you look at his history, he’s been an utter failure at everything he’s touched. He was a C student in college (Yale or not doesn’t matter), he was a frat boy burnout, he was a no-show in his National Guard service, he was a failure in the oil business, he was a failure in the baseball business, he was a crappy governer of Texas, and he’s the worst president in US history. Now, that’s one hell of a long time to be pretending to be stupider than dirt just to avoid one’s evil tendencies.

I think the simpler answer is that the American system of electing a president is so f’d up that it’s quite possible to elect a moron puppet, kind of comparable to how possible it is to be rich and famous even when you have no talent (Britney Spears, etc), if you have the right look and the right handlers.

For god sake, this dimbulb got has arse handed to him, and suffered public humiliation, in every Presidential debate. Remember the dopey blinking when he couldn’t answer a simple question? But he won anyway. A little help from Jeb, the SCOTUS, and Diebold doesn’t hurt either. Add a nation with Clinton fatigue, a major terr-rist attack, an apathetic electorate, a docile press bludgeoned toward the right for a decade, and an impotent Congress, a major boost from PNAC aqnd the neocon elite, and an unholy alliance with the religious right, and it’s not much of a stretch to elect Mr. Dunce. Twice. It’s the confluence of an amazing series of factors to lift him to undeserved heights. He’s Forest Gump brought to life, without the likable and innocent qualities.

Sorry, I don’t believe it. He has a stubborn streak that has been effective at times, but I don’t detect much wattage in his bulbs. Certainly not enough to engineer something as gargantuan as 911.
