So much for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) remarks about Iraq being “un-American.”

I will take a wild guess and say there weren't thousands dying each month from car bombs and sectarian fighting in Germany and Japan during their postwar reconstruction. Both Germany and Japan declared war on America--Dick Cheney declared war on Iraq's oil fields.

We all know, however, in hindsight that it not only was possible but occurred.
It wasn't a total civil war for that whole time Germany was split either. And at least politically, both sides of Germany were recognized as separate political entities, which left possibilities of continued diplomacy and such. Right now, we have one Iraq, under fire and quickly burning, with no real 'state' to fight; just a lot of angry, violent groups, a populace who wonders what we're really doing there and despite the violence against turning TOWARD the insurgents. And the problem too is that in the Revolutionary war...we actually showed signs of progress. We're reaching the point of being stuck in Iraq longer than the Revolutionary war...and again. They had the luxury of having an actual army to fight against. We have several divided, divisive movements with scattered leadership if any. While this seems like it'd be easy to take care of, when they're all clashing in a firestorm, it makes victory impossible. Because who do you have to beat to win? What do you have to achieve to 'win'?
Victory is impossible, because there's very little we can achieve that could really constitute victory.

Iraq is NOT Germany. Germany was mostly homogeneous in terms of ethnicity and religion. They had experience with republicanism (little r) & democracy pre-WWI. So there's a drastic difference right there. And there was no civil war! There's a HUGE difference. West Germany vs. East Germany in fact was, in reality, US vs. USSR. They were kept separate because of the Cold War. Totally different situation. Nice try.

If it were not for the involvement of the French in 1778, the it is very possible that Colonies would have lost. The Battle of the Chesapeake, was a crucial naval battle involving the French navy vs. the British. It was a major defeat for the British Royal Navy.

The victory by the French fleet prevented the British Royal Navy from resupplying the forces of British General Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, Virginia.
It also prevented British interference with the supply of troops and provisions from New York to the armies of George Washington through Chesapeake Bay. As a result, Cornwallis surrendered after the siege of Yorktown (a combined assault of French and American forces), and Great Britain later recognized the independence of the United States of America.

The French, with their navy, were able to dramatically shift the dynamics of the war. Their navy allowed us to choke off Britain's supply of soldiers and ammo. It also allowed some of our key troops to move unencumbered.
Adding 20,000 to 30,000 U.S. soldiers to this current mess in Iraq is not likely to produce a dramatic shift in the dynamics of this war. It is not likely to significantly choke off the supply of insurgents. Nor is it likely to significantly choke off the supply of ammo used against us.

And you think people would have been frightening enough to give away so many of thier rights in the PAtriot act if it wern't for 9-11? 9-11 is the best thing that ever happened to republicans. If YOU idiots hadnt screwed it up by attacking a country that had nothing to do with 9-11, whose societal structure wasnt condusive to your form of occupation..erm I mean "freedom", you'd still be in power. You expected Iraqis to roll over like dogs and swallow your plutocratic pro-western/pro-israel agenda and they didnt, because no one in thier right mind would think such a thing would be possible in that region in this time period. Saying the insurgents helped the left wing wing gain congress is like saying gravity keeps Jake/Patrick/Randy from flying when he jumps off a cliff with the rest of his lemmings.
