Americans agree with Reid.

Americans agree with Reid.

So much for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) remarks about Iraq being “un-American.”

Full poll results are HERE. Jonathan Singer has more.

UPDATE: More overwhelming war opposition in Kentucky, home of chief war supporter Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).

I am curious about the ratings on the Bill Moyers’ special tonight on the media complicity and complacency in the run up to the war.
A most disturbing, and sad commentary on the degradation of the media today; they have become nothing more than conduits – sewer pipes – to intake the garbage from the administration and spill it out on to the American public.
This is something most of us have been observing and lamenting for a long time now, but having seen it all laid out in the program tonight has renewed my frustration and depression and anger.

It took more than 40 years to bring about a united Germany. For instance, if you could ask someone in the American Colonies towards the end of 1776 whether victory was still possible, maybe you would have gotten the same results. The British are giving bases back to the Iraqis. This was never a war. This was a freedom operation, maybe if you and the idiot media would stop calling it a war things would settle down because they have irrational reactionists over there as we have those here (America).

  34. AboveTheClouds says:

Judy–You’re making the same mistake George Bush and the necons are making–thinking Americans give a shit about Iraq when they themselve don’t give a hoot. If Bush really wanted to “win” in Iraq would he have selected Don Rumsfeld and Paul Bremer to lead the charge?

For instance, if you could ask someone in the American Colonies towards the end of 1776 whether victory was still possible, maybe you would have gotten the same results. We all know, however, in hindsight that it not only was possible but occurred.

It wasn’t a total civil war for that whole time Germany was split either. And at least politically, both sides of Germany were recognized as separate political entities, which left possibilities of continued diplomacy and such. Right now, we have one Iraq, under fire and quickly burning, with no real ’state’ to fight; just a lot of angry, violent groups, a populace who wonders what we’re really doing there and despite the violence against turning TOWARD the insurgents. And the problem too is that in the Revolutionary war…we actually showed signs of progress. We’re reaching the point of being stuck in Iraq longer than the Revolutionary war…and again. They had the luxury of having an actual army to fight against. We have several divided, divisive movements with scattered leadership if any. While this seems like it’d be easy to take care of, when they’re all clashing in a firestorm, it makes victory impossible. Because who do you have to beat to win? What do you have to achieve to ‘win’?

Victory is impossible, because there’s very little we can achieve that could really constitute victory.

When 55% of Americans think that victory is NOT possible, then that’s the same as 55% of people saying “we’ve already lost.” You see, Judy/Jake/Patrick1/firehead/Valiant/Frank Matthews, when people say victory is impossible, that means victory is NOT possible; when something is lost, victory is not possible. Therefore, your argument is ridiculous.

So while cowards like Patrick1, Fireant, Judy, Jason, Sexion sit there HIDING, our military is falling apart, and the insurgents are increasing. And while Hitler used children and old men against us, this time they’ll win as cowards sit here and put magnetic support the troops stickers on their SUV, call liberals traitors, and cowards, and they consider themselves patriotic????

    LEARN YOUR HISTORY, JUDY!

Iraq is NOT Germany. Germany was mostly homogeneous in terms of ethnicity and religion. They had experience with republicanism (little r) & democracy pre-WWI. So there’s a drastic difference right there. And there was no civil war! There’s a HUGE difference. West Germany vs. East Germany in fact was, in reality, US vs. USSR. They were kept separate because of the Cold War. Totally different situation. Nice try.

“For instance, if you could ask someone in the American Colonies towards the end of 1776 whether victory was still possible, maybe you would have gotten the same results. We all know, however, in hindsight that it not only was possible but occurred.”

    Comment by Judy:

If it were not for the involvement of the French in 1778, the it is very possible that Colonies would have lost. The Battle of the Chesapeake, was a crucial naval battle involving the French navy vs. the British. It was a major defeat for the British Royal Navy.

    —————————-
In case you are interested in the details … (if not, just skip to the next section)

The victory by the French fleet prevented the British Royal Navy from resupplying the forces of British General Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, Virginia.

It also prevented British interference with the supply of troops and provisions from New York to the armies of George Washington through Chesapeake Bay. As a result, Cornwallis surrendered after the siege of Yorktown (a combined assault of French and American forces), and Great Britain later recognized the independence of the United States of America.

    ———————-

The French, with their navy, were able to dramatically shift the dynamics of the war. Their navy allowed us to choke off Britain’s supply of soldiers and ammo. It also allowed some of our key troops to move unencumbered.

Adding 20,000 to 30,000 U.S. soldiers to this current mess in Iraq is not likely to produce a dramatic shift in the dynamics of this war. It is not likely to significantly choke off the supply of insurgents. Nor is it likely to significantly choke off the supply of ammo used against us.

Democrats’ Timetable Allows U.S. War in Sunni Region to Go On

The language on a timetable for U.S. withdrawal from Iraq voted out of the House-Senate conference committee this week contains large loopholes that would apparently allow U.S. troops to continue carrying out military operations in Iraq’s Sunni heartland indefinitely.,,

36% must be heavy alchohol abusers

You know that was the prefered drug ( alchohol ) of the Nazis for use on Jewish prison guards that way they could be mass killers and drown their sorrows easier

meanwhile troops on the front line were given speed

so 36% American voters must be alchoholics

  222. Knappy Headed Ho says:

    > Why do you liberals resort to name calling
    > instead of addressing real issues?

Yes, we’re the ones who repeated the phrase “flip flopper” over and over again to describe people who sometimes think about things then change their mind, to such an extent that it became part of the english language like google did.

and hey Randy/Jake/Patrick, you fookers got WAY more mileage out of terrorist related crap that we did….you think if Bush had been on the ball and prevented 9-11, he’d still be in office now? what would he have been yammering and screaming and frightening us about for the past 7 years?
other than cutting taxes, not a single part of his domestic agenda went anywhere. his ratings were in a nosedive before 9-11, and theres no evidence that they would have done anything put continue to plummet like they have been last several years, had it not been for 9-11. And you think people would have been frightening enough to give away so many of thier rights in the PAtriot act if it wern’t for 9-11? 9-11 is the best thing that ever happened to republicans. If YOU idiots hadnt screwed it up by attacking a country that had nothing to do with 9-11, whose societal structure wasnt condusive to your form of occupation..erm I mean “freedom”, you’d still be in power. You expected Iraqis to roll over like dogs and swallow your plutocratic pro-western/pro-israel agenda and they didnt, because no one in thier right mind would think such a thing would be possible in that region in this time period. Saying the insurgents helped the left wing wing gain congress is like saying gravity keeps Jake/Patrick/Randy from flying when he jumps off a cliff with the rest of his lemmings.

Besides, I think you’re making the argument that since liberals hate bush and everyone in iraq hates bush, that liberals and everyone in iraq are on the same side… ie “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.”…..”

saddam hussien was the enemy of our enemy iran. how did that pan out?

#150 – “Why do you liberals resort to name calling instead of addressing real issues?” Comment by michael — April 26, 2007 @ 1:32 am

Spoken like someone who obviously never listens to Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, or any other ultra-rabid right-winger talking head.

It’s the neo-con wanna-be’s that begin with the name-calling, ramp it up to ad hominem attacks, and then end with mindless rantings about Fmr. Pres. Clinton’s body parts.

Sweetie, you need to wake up to reality. Stop drinking the cool-aide without engaging your own brain.

  227. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Wiggy sez:

If we lost, then who won?

    Halliburton.

  228. toasterhead says:

#224 – TripMaster Monkey said: Halliburton.

That’s an untrue statement and you know it.

There are a lot more companies than Halliburton that profited from this war: Bechtel, Blackwell, DynCorp, SAIC, General Dynamics, RTI, BearingPoint, CACI, Titan, Custer Battles, Louis Berger, DAI, and Abt Associates, just to name a few. Try getting the facts straight next time!

  229. Bluedahlia says:

I think michael needs to be reported to the police. TP needs to step up and clear this stuff out. His IP needs to be turned over to the authorities. At the VERY LEAST he is guilty of harassment. Doesn’t TP have a monitor for the rest of the crap that went on here above. This seriously takes away from meaningful discussion and plays right into their (trolls, republican brownshirt bootsteppes) hands.

  230. Raven says:

#225. I don’t know how many of the companies you listed are actual satellites or subsidiaries of Halliburton, but undoubtedly they all benefit from the Conflict Capitalism which Halliburton has undoubtedly become the poster child for.
It’s unclear which inaccurate fact you are referring to.

  231. liberalism=mental disorder says:

In reading the poll results it says that the question about victory in Iraq was only asked of one half of the respondents. Why is that? Were they filtered in any way?

Yeah, it must be that ultra-liberal rag, you know, the Wall Street Journal, that is at it again, trying to skew the results…

Do you know why only half of the 1004 people were asked that question?

  234. tom baker says:

the united states is a democracy, not a military dictatorship. period.

the war cheerleaders, therefore, and the administration’s apologists, are all free to move to one, and enjoy.

genuine patriotism will remain the exclusive province of those who abide by the Constitution, and obey the rule of law and will of the people.

advocates of military dictatorship rather than the rule of Democracy are genuine traitors, and are actually guilty of real treason, and are fortunate our laws are liberal enough that they are not rounded up and detained, as anyone who interferes with the Constitutional operation of our Democracy should be.
