AP reports:
A sharply divided House brushed aside a veto threat Wednesday and passed legislation that would order President Bush to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq by Oct. 1.
The 218-208 vote came as the top U.S. commander in Iraq told lawmakers the country remained gripped by violence but was showing some signs of improvement.
Passage puts the bill on track to clear Congress by week’s end and arrive on the president’s desk in coming days as the first binding congressional challenge to Bush’s handling of the conflict now in its fifth year.
UPDATE: The Gavel has several videos from the floor debate HERE, HERE, and HERE.
UPDATE II: Profile in courage: Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (R-MO) voted “present.” Also: Reps. Jones and Gilchrest voted aye on the Republican side, Dems voting no were Reps. Barrow, Boren, Davis (Lincoln), Kucinich, Lee, Lewis (John), McNulty, Michaud, Marshall, Matheson, Taylor, Woolsey, and Waters

April 25th, 2007 at 9:33 pmThat is good news.Another gift for the Chymp, together with assorted scandals.
April 25th, 2007 at 9:34 pmOne believes that history will judge Bush quite harshly if he decides to use his veto power to strike down this bill, a bill which is designed to save American lives in that quagmire in Iraq. Sadly, it remains to be seen whether this administration cares that American lives are being sacrificed for absolutely no justifiable reason whatsoever, especially since it appears highly unlikely that the Iraqis will decide to swim to the United States in order to continue fighting against the United States military. Support the troops- Bring them home- now!
April 25th, 2007 at 9:34 pmWe’ll soon find out if Bush supports our troops by signing this bill. It provides the funds for Bush’s escalation of the Iraq war. To veto this bill would deny the Pentagon the money it needs to support the US military’s Iraq operations
April 25th, 2007 at 9:35 pmI asked in thread the other day, and somewhat relevant to the topic, with the current GOP’ers in trouble, is it not the Governor of the state who appoints someone to replace them if they lose their seat?
April 25th, 2007 at 9:37 pmWe are finally turning a corner.
April 25th, 2007 at 9:40 pmThe country was solidly behind Clinton when he decided to shut down government rather than cave in to republican’s demands. The public is solidly against Bush and his policies, so congress should not be afraid to do just that, as well – fully fund the troops, of course, but shut down all Bush’s other projects. No more money for faith based initiatives, or any other of his cherished projects. And any signing statement automatically invalidates the deal. Congress has the power to demand this stipulation.

I think that one falls under states’ rights: the voters of each decide.

I have an anonymous source that Iran has been supplying the terrorists with High Tech Navy Craft that are radar proof.

Erroll is wise. The statement above says it perfectly, and I believe history will consider this particular legislative decision just how Erroll describes it. The whole war was a sham, and everybody (well, most everybody) seems to be waking up to the truth.
April 25th, 2007 at 9:47 pmWhen Bush vetoes this bill, it will be HE who is depriving the troops of the funding claimed to be needed for them to continue.
April 25th, 2007 at 9:47 pmBush wants to name the game, make the rules, be the referee and the scorekeeper — that’s the way he has always operated.
In the real world, negotiation and compromise rule.
The Dems will fund the troops, but the withdrawal must begin.
I dare the idiot to veto it.
April 25th, 2007 at 9:53 pmYes, the governor of the relevent state appoints a replacement for a Senator or Congressman that is unable to carry out their term.
April 25th, 2007 at 9:59 pmI’m with you Big Papa, but no one in authority will take that step. Revolution would be necessary for those steps. I like the French method better for these though.

The “insurgents” don’t have to swim over here. They will load up their ICMC’s (1) with WMD’s (2) and we will be in a world of trouble.

April 25th, 2007 at 11:05 pmTwo Republicans — Reps. Wayne Gilchrest of Maryland and Walter Jones of North Carolina — joined 216 Democrats in passing the bill. Voting no were 195 Republicans and 13 Democrats.
Who were the 13 Democrats?
April 26th, 2007 at 12:02 amJohn Lewis of Georgia voted no. As you can see from his speech on the House floor on 3-19-07, Lewis won’t vote for any money to support the Iraq war.
April 26th, 2007 at 12:34 am
Any funding to end the war and bring the troops home should be approved. All funding to continue the war and occupation should end. To say that you are in favor of ending this occupation/war while continuing to provide the means by which it is fought, amounts to no more than another form of deception. To settle for the lesser of two evils, is still settling for evil.
Peace!

Amen! And, Peace to you!
P.S.: Of the thirteen Democrats voting AGAINST funding the cpntinued military occupation and destruction of Iraq on the basis of PRINCIPLE, LOVE OF OUR COUNTRY, RESPECT FOR OUR TROOPS NOW IN HARM’S WAY, HONESTY, and INTEGRITY, I identified the following: Kucinich, Lee, John Lewis, Woolsey, and Waters. Are there any others?
April 26th, 2007 at 1:29 amRonald Jonkers: Big Oil’s Man in Iraq
You knew he had to be there, even if we didn’t know his name before. As ace reporter Daphne Eviatar reveals in this month’s American Lawyer, Ronald Jonkers is the oil industry’s man in Iraq – and US taxpayers are picking up the bill.
Jonkers unfortunately wouldn’t comment for the article – and apparently few would. A spokesman for the State Department, would say only that “our guys are helping the Iraqis write their law and pass their law,†and that “the hydrocarbon law is critically important.â€
Well, that puts Mister Jonkers more on the inside than all of Iraqi civil society, including the vast majority of Iraqi Parliamentarians who didn’t even see the law until it was dropped last month.
April 26th, 2007 at 3:35 amDemocrats’ Timetable Allows U.S. War in Sunni Region to Go On
The language on a timetable for U.S. withdrawal from Iraq voted out of the House-Senate conference committee this week contains large loopholes that would apparently allow U.S. troops to continue carrying out military operations in Iraq’s Sunni heartland indefinitely.

Those 4 permanent bases in Iraq need soldiers to guarantee access to the “American” oil under the “Iraqi” sand.
My fellow americans cannot see the forest for the trees and put their hopes in Democrats who are simply Republican “lite”, and who are just as criminal as Bush and company for going along.
If the money spent on that crime against humanity called the Iraq war, we would have solar cells on buildings, wave generators off the coasts, wind mills across the windy areas, and hemp growing in across the fields, and be free of the oil dependency that started this mess in the first place.
April 26th, 2007 at 6:58 amThe People Have Spoken!
After 100-and-I-don’t-care-how-many days of pointless posturing, the House passes a meaningless surrender bill 218-208. The mandate, the will of the American people and their enthusiasm for surrender, failure and genocide in Iraq, etc., expressed here turns out to be a margin of 10 votes, or about 2.3 percent of those voting.
April 26th, 2007 at 10:05 amTook me a second to figure out why Kucinich would be voting “no”, but then I realized it’s because he’s consistently voted against EVERY bill for funding the war.
