‘We’re in trouble.’

– Retired Army Gen. Barry McCaffrey’s assessment of the situation in Iraq

  1. Raven says:

From the linked article, McCaffrey: “There is essentially no province where the central government holds sway…”

    Hey, just like Afghanistan!

If he had any sense, he would have said the same when he was the Drug Czar….

  8. Badmoodman says:

McCaffrey’s legitimacy would be more believable if he hadn’t said on Hardball two weeks ago that the jury was still out on Iraq.

Oh gawd, Laura and George will be suffering a little bit more tonight. Where has all the happy news gone?

There are two answers to your question.

It’s news to 9% Cheney, who still thinks we’re “winning”.

It qualifies as news, because yet another retired military official is trying to explain to Cheney that “We’re in trouble”, a situation we wouldn’t be in if we “were winning”.

I know, difficult concepts escape you son, and you’re welcome for me taking the time to teach you the more important subtleties of politics and english. Just ask anytime. You should ask more often, you wouldn’t look like such a foolish jake*ss if you did.

  14. Patrick1 says:

On Tuesday I interviewed journalist and author Lawrence Wright, long a contributor to The New Yorker. Wright’s The Looming Tower won the Pulitzer for general non-fiction last week, and its chilling account of the rise of al Qaeda awakens any objective reader to the facts that this worldwide Islamist threat is not the creation of the Bush presidency, and more than retreat from Iraq would stall its growth or limit its appeal. There is no alternative to fighting it wherever it appears, just as there is no alternative to cabining Iran’s ambitions. (The transcript of Tuesday’s interview with Wright is here, and the audio here. A two-hour interview with him from last September is here, and the audio of that program is here and here.) Wright’s September 2006 New Yorker article, “The Master Plan,” on the grand strategy of the new generation of al Qaeda is more evidence that we have no alternative to victory in Iraq, and that the Democrats’ proposed course of action is simply suicidal.

Comment from a chickenshit chickenhawk. Did he tell you why the people over there don’t want us fucking around in their business? Freaking idiots live in fear and justify this clusterfuck that should never have happened. Get a grip, moron.

No, you didn’t you big fat liar.

    This part is especially humorous:

(The transcript of Tuesday’s interview with Wright is here, and the audio here. A two-hour interview with him from last September is here, and the audio of that program is here and here.)

Pattie, you dolt…if you’re going to plagiarize entire blocks of text, then you should at least either edit out parts with hyperlinks, or make sure you don’t strip out the links during your cut-n-paste operation.

    Seriously…

It’s a fairly slow day so let me fill in the roll of Republican troll.

    “sarcasm on”
As Bill O’ might say you’re all suffering from Sorosis, the War on Terror is going beautifully. Every day bombs are going off that kill Iraqis in groups of 10 or more. That’s at least 1 insurgent in the crowd and 9 other potential terrorists.
    “sarcasm off”

I feel like we’re the special child in the International play room. The president just helps make the feeling a reality.

  22. kip says:

#14: if your ‘interview’ was so spectacular that you had to post references to it as a comment to someone else’s blog, well, i guess your own Pulitzer is still down the road a ways. i believe its sentences like…

“Wright’s The Looming Tower won the Pulitzer for general non-fiction last week, and its chilling account of the rise of al Qaeda awakens any objective reader to the facts that this worldwide Islamist threat is not the creation of the Bush presidency, and more than retreat from Iraq would stall its growth or limit its appeal. ”

…that may limit your chances of even being understood by the Pulitzer committee.

  23. Namtillaku says:

Trip and all, while I’m not a fan of Patrick1 and 99.9% of what he has to say, he’s making a valid point here. I believe we need to leave Iraq now, but Muslim extremists aren’t going to go away. Like it or not, we’re going to be fighting them for a long, long time.

What makes you think that anyone is saying that leaving iraq will make Muslim extremists “go away”?

The point is that our presence in Iraq is making the problem worse, not better.

Post #14 is missing links. Its “author” is a missing link.

  28. Vinnie says:

Hey, be nice to Patrick1. He’s not able to come up with anything on his own so he has to cut-n-paste right-wing diatribes to progressive web sites.

It’s a crappy job but Patrick can’t do much else with his life. The RNC is paying him the minimum wage so it’s all legal.

  29. Vinnie says:

Here’s where Patrick got his link from. Maybe we should all go to the Freeper site and start posting lengthy diatribes of our own.

  30. Helen Rainier says:

Until these fools who think they know more about conducting warfare than the generals understand what the REAL reasons are for Islamic radicalism, any efforts we make to “win” their hearts and minds is doomed to fail. The problem is the Palestinian issue and the deprivation of their right to exist in a safe and stable environment, and the indignities imposed upon them by the Israeli Government. Do a Google search for UN Sanctions against Israel and there are over 50 of them. Until our government understands and accepts the fact that the Palestinian people have as much of a right to exist as the Israelis this problem will continue.

BTW, I don’t want to hear any crap from anyone about being “anti-semitic.” I have no quarrel with the Jewish people, just as I have none with the Palestinians. Being anti-semitic is NOT the same thing as being as anti-Jewish or anti-Israel.

  31. margaret says:

Thank you KRank – rational thinking has become such a rare commodity!

  32. dinah says:

Bush Is Mobilizing The ENTIRE National Guard…

WASHINGTON, DC — I have two subjects to deal with today. The first is the completely disastrous military situation in Iraq and the second deals with deliberately poisoned food in the United States. In the first matter, it will soon become public that Bush is going to extend the tours of duty for troops to 15 months or, with some clever interpretation of the rules, to 20 months.

    http://www.tbrnews.org/Archives/a2666.htm

The new “surge” troops are not properly armed; have absolutely no body armor, for example, and not is, or will be available, and the casualties are soaring.

Why does this man who served his country in uniform for 33 years hate America?

  34. margaret says:

    Very well put Helen Rainier!

Right now, our efforts to contain Islamic radicals seem to be confined to “pacifying” them and killing them. I don’t pretend that they are all open to reason and reconciliation, but, if we don’t learn what drives them to extremes then I can’t imagine that we’ll get anywhere!

  35. Namtillaku says:

    Comment by margaret — April 25, 2007 @ 2:38 pm

There you go, you hit the nail on the head. Islamic extremists are nothing more than fascists, who are diametrically opposed to the Western way of life. We know what drives them, and unless you are OK with wearing a burka, not going to school of any kind, and being completely subservient to your husband (forget about being gay), we’re not going to get anywhere.

  36. margaret says:

Namtillaku – I am compelled to respond to you hysteria because you’ve apparently misread what I wrote.

I said, “I don’t pretend that they are ALL open to reason and reconciliation”. To clarify, I believe that if progress was made in regards to the Palestinian situation AND we engage them in more than mortar fire then we might be able to achieve some progress.

Also, apparently you did NOT read Helen Rainier’s excellent post that I was responding to.

p.s. Women were NOT wearing burkas in Iraq before we went in like a bull in a china shop. NOW women are afraid to leave their homes (assuming that they still have a home).

  37. margaret says:

In addition, I feel strongly that if Americans were able to think in shades of gray once in awhile the country would be well served!

It’s always got to be “this” or “that” with them! There are too many people out there who apparently cannot (will not?) think beyond, “we have to kill them all or our women will all be wearing burkas!” It’s either lazy thinking or stupidity.

  38. Namtillaku says:

Don’t get me wrong, I used the term Muslim extremist for a reason. The people who I’m referring to – OBL etc could care less what we do about the Palestinian situation.

No, I didn’t read the post you were responding to, just your comments. The whole purpose behind my response to your post, and my other post above is that I believe that there are some here who are too reactionary, and really need to realize that while the war in Iraq is unjust, there are others out there who seek the destruction of the West, and there’s nothing we can do about it other than oppose them.

I am surprised by your use of the term ‘hysteria’ in describing my posts – in no way am I feeling ‘hysterical’ and when I read my posts (at least to me) they certainly don’t have a hysterical tone.

I apologize if I’ve offended you, but my points stand.

  39. margaret says:

And I in turn apologize if I’ve mis-interpreted your post. It’s just that I don’t think it’s as simple as some seem to think it is. People are not born “extremist” and I believe that our actions in the Middle East are driving many towards extremist behavior.

I also believe that OBL doesn’t have much, if anything, to do with what’s going on in Iraq right now. Some of the extremists might be trying to curry favor with him though.

And I am definitely guilty of being “reactionary” to your comments about the burka etc. I truly feel that we do NOT know much about what drives the radicals. But I do think that the Palestinian problem is a big part of it. And I know that the level of women’s “freedoms” in Muslim countries varies quite a bit from country to country and that, by our actions, we’ve empowered the radicals enough that women have generally lost ground in that regard.

It’s a complex issue for sure.

  40. paul says:

    fuller quote…

    “We’re in trouble.

The American people walked away from the war. I don’t think they’re coming back. Iraq’s neighbors are bearing no good will toward a favorable outcome in Iraq.”

  41. Karim says:

The general’s powers of stating the obvious are most uncanny.

  42. demdandy says:

“We’re in trouble” must be what a general says or at least thinks when the spectre of annihilation at last invades his consciousness.

  43. Saywho says:

George Washington once said, “Firearms are second only to the Constitution in importance; they are the peoples’ liberty’s teeth.” The right to own a firearm has been a staple of the American way of life ever since beginning of our country.
