On Tuesday, Fox News morning show “Fox & Friends” aired at least eight segments on a purported “news” story that was actually a parody article written by a publication similar to The Onion.
The backstory: Last week in the town of Lewiston, Maine, a group of Somalian Muslim middle school students were the subject of a cruel prank when their peers placed a ham steak next to them in order to personally offend the students. School officials filed a report because the students considered the act to be a hate/bias crime.
This actual story was then spoofed by a parody site called Associated Content, which made up quotes and details, such as the school’s intention to “create an anti-ham ‘response plan.’”
On Tuesday, Fox & Friends reported these parody quotes and details as actual news. Poking fun at the students, hosts asked whether ham was “a hate crime…or lunch?” and showed screen shots of ham sandwiches, starving Somalians, belching, animal noises, and mock “reenactments” of the incident. Ironically, the hosts assured viewers several times, “We’re not making this up!”
Watch a compilation:
Fox’s careless blunder made news in the town and “launched an immediate avalanche of angry phone calls and ugly e-mails to the school system.”
In the parody, the ham steak became a ham sandwich. Fake quotes were attributed to Superintendent Leon Levesque, Stephen Wessler of the Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence, and one of the Somali students targeted in the incident. […]
Following the Fox broadcast, Levesque’s office received dozens of angry phone calls and profanity-laced e-mails, made and sent by people all over the country, who charge the school district overreacted to what they believed from news reports to be a ham sandwich tossed at a Somali student. […]“Fox has figured out, from the calls we’ve gotten, that they’ve made a big mistake,” Wessler said.
“This is a wake-up call that the level of hate and anger, among a small population, is vibrant,” he added.
Levesque said he was bothered not only that the parody took aim at a sensitive issue in Lewiston, but also that Fox and others reported the information as fact without checking. The national media, Levesque said, sees information posted online and “uses it as gospel.”
We’ve long known Fox News’ reporting was parody, but reporting parody news is a new low.
I don’t think Fox didn’t know it was a parody. Fox wanted to cause as much problems as they could for someone.

April 27th, 2007 at 11:35 amKucinich Files Articles of Impeachment Against Cheney
The trivialization started with the media quoting unnamed “Democratic aides” making statements like: “We’ll see a Kucinich Administration before we’ll see a Cheney impeachment.”
Today, the Washington Post’s Dana Milbank turned his middle-aged frat-boy analytical skills to taking Kucinich down a peg; his typically dismissive lede:
“I do not stand alone,” Dennis Kucinich said as he stood, alone, in front of a cluster of microphones yesterday evening.

April 27th, 2007 at 11:36 amFox News is a parody now.
April 27th, 2007 at 11:36 amHmmm….I wonder if the District has standing to sue Fox for publishing false information with such a reckless disregard for the truth.
Here, the consequences to the district seem to be limited to hate emails. What if, in the future, someone sees a false story from Fox and resorts to violence as a result?
Since Fox is using the public airways and has a license from the federal government to do so, I would hope there is an FCC investigation into this to see if Fox should be allowed to keep their license!
April 27th, 2007 at 11:37 amCan’t they be sued under some sort of slander statute for reporting false news without retraction?
I hope that Congress gets around to determining who may or not use “News” in their branding. The First Amendment doesn’t protect institutional deception. Using “News” to grift people is fraud, me thinks; just as using “Safe” or “Non Toxic” on items that are not is fraud and civilly liable.

Fox “News”. Where is the joke?
I love the right wing’s attempts at humor. They do something absolutely humorless, it ends up being destructive or down right offensive, and then they hide behind words like ‘parody’ or ’satire’. In order for it to be satire, it must be funny or ironic. What a bunch of tools.
April 27th, 2007 at 11:39 amWhen ever a Faux News person says “I’m not making this stuff up”… believe the opposite.

April 27th, 2007 at 11:40 amHey - remember when the wingnutosphere was crowing because they “punked” liberal blogs by photoshopping Karl Rove holding a folder from the web service “Coptix”? It was gleefully reported by FOX news shill Brit Hume as another indication of the stupidity of those liberal bloggers.
The guy who made the Photoshop didn’t put it in an obvious humor website, but did include a few photo edits to give hints that it was a forgery. But here we have a post on a humor website, and the FOX news network treats it as serious.
Now, any bets on whether ol’ Brit will do a scoop on how his entire network turned a joke post on a joke website into a complete story?

That is the first indication someone might be making things up. But wait! There’s more! Looking at the bottom of the page:
See, that wasn’t so hard.
But as we witness over and over, when you want to see things a certain way, key evidence to the contrary will not be seen.

April 27th, 2007 at 11:52 amIgnorant news for ignorant people. Custom made for intellectually lethargic American morons. If it draws in viewers, Fox won’t care. I’m sure this will mark the beginning of a trend.
April 27th, 2007 at 11:53 amanyone notice that our media is now pretty close to that of the media in “V for Vendetta”? i mean it’s been that way for a while as far as propaganda that is hidden for years until the truth is outed, but this just takes the cake. they don’t even pretend to do news anymore….
April 27th, 2007 at 11:54 amThis is absolutely disgraceful, but sadly typical of the rock-bottom standards at Fox.

If you say so. I’m no attorney however I would think that the FCC, not that they will even look at this will have a difficult time in fact a nearly impossible time making the case that this comes close to indecency.
April 27th, 2007 at 11:55 amthis goes to prove the point I made yesterday on HuffPo: most consternos aren’t sophisticated enough to “get” satire…

April 27th, 2007 at 11:57 amJust read this on RedState about FNC.
Next month’s GOP candidates’ debate in South Carolina, will be a bit different than next week’s free-for-all for all and sundry. It will be hosted by FOX News Channel, and FNC – perhaps as by far the most viewed news network on cable – is putting down its foot. FNC is deciding who may or who may not participate in their debate, and the SC GOP is on board with this.
Fox is now selecting their choices instead of letting America decide.

Who could possibly think that broadcasting a “fictional” account of a contemporaneous “news” story could result in people reacting violently and irrationally - as if the account was true?
This is why we have disclaimers. Precedence has taught us that there is a line, and legality indicates that the line must be clearly marked.
There’s a loose cannon on the deck, and it needs to be secured.

What about the intention of the person who put the burger in front of you? When someone does something with the intent to offend, there’s a whole new level to the social interaction.
Then there’s the other angle: What if I put dog feces near where you were eating? Would you be offended, or just shrug it off?
Stop trying to minimize the behavior.
P.S: the story isn’t about the ham - it’s about fiction reported as news.

FOX News is dangerously minimizing this problem by joking about it.
April 27th, 2007 at 12:17 pmFox News just further proves that republicans hide their lower IQs by sleazy schemes and knee-jerk faux outrage. They subsist on histrionics over substance.

April 27th, 2007 at 12:19 pmIn other news:
WOODBURN, Indiana (AP) – A high school teacher who faced losing her job after a student newspaper published an editorial advocating tolerance of gays can continue teaching at another school.
Intolerance is alive and well in America, land of the “free.” You have more human rights in Europe right now than you do in America.
April 27th, 2007 at 12:19 pmI’m a bit conflicted on this one. On one hand, the level of incompetence and absurdity of that network’s “news” division is humorous.
But on the other hand, there are now a few million Americans who think that rubbing a ham sandwich on one of them thar “Muslims” would be a funny prank. A particular belief system is being publicly marginalized and disrespected because of ignorance and shallow thinking. You may think that’s no big deal. To that I offer these thoughts:
- What do you think would happen if someone delivered a bunch of ham sandwiches to a synagogue during a worship service? Would it be such a knee slapper?
- What do you think would happen if some artist recreated a religious sculpture, let’s say, oh maybe, one depicting Christ, and the entire sculpture was made of chocolate? Do you think Christian’s would just chuckle at the artist’s whimsical behavior?
My point being, the premise here that is being allowed to exist even in this thread (though I’m certain that it is mostly unintentional) is that the Muslim faith is based on silly and childish rituals and superstitions. This is not just the pot joking about the kettle being black, but it is also the pot declaring that all blackness is stupid, except its own of course.
Just some thoughts…
April 27th, 2007 at 12:19 pmNext week, they can recycle the joke, but with Jews instead of Muslims.

April 27th, 2007 at 12:24 pm(sigh)
Bad journalism is bad journalism, and deserves to be criticized and mocked, and if Fox screwed the pooch on the story, it deserves the derision.
Somehow, though, I think all this self-righteous (or is it self-lefteous?) posturing goes quiet when it comes to examples from news organizations that tow a more left-leaning line.
Within the past year the New York Times, the AP and NBC (to name a few) have made major gaffes or outright distortions, but if they somehow did not attack people or issues on the right, I doubt if there much response, if any, here. Am I wrong?
And “Faux News”? Shouldn’t that be the name of CBS news, after their manufactured memos incident? No, of course not, because it was all about getting someone you didn’t like.
Don’t bother asking for examples. Google it, and I am sure you will find something. Then see if this blog even mentioned any of them.

April 27th, 2007 at 12:26 pmI can’t bring myself to watch Fox and Friends, even for a minute, so will anyone out there with a stronger stomach than me tell us if they have apologized for the mistake and made a public correction??
April 27th, 2007 at 12:29 pmWhat is it that makes thes sort of people (Fox and their ilk) that makes them so unwilling to understand and respect about other that otehr religions/cultures have different beliefs.
It doesn’t seem that difficult of a concept, and it certainly isn’t something that should be so difficult for ADULTS to understand.
What if I put some DOG meat inside a sandwich and offered it to them? They’d be outraged, yes? Well, THAT meat that outrages them would be considered a delicacy in Korea.
Muslims don’t eat pigs. Koreans eat dogs. They are clearly both different eating patterns than most of us (christians, jews, buddhist, etc).
But these Fox idiots are creating more problems with their inability to accept the behaviors and beliefs of others. THAT is not what our country is based on: it USED to based on acceptance of others, and others’ religions. Fox is an American disgrace.

Lou Dobbs falls for a lot of things. And he never apologizes for getting them wrong. He’s a right-wing tool. He harps about illegal immigrants to make it look like he’s a friend of the working stiff, but he’s loyal to his GOP masters.
April 27th, 2007 at 12:37 pmI hate Fox, but, as someone else said, Lou Dobbs also reported the story as real. A good example of how the main stream media can control the sheeple. Another excellent example, Bill Moyers: Buying the War.

First off, none of those you have listed are liberal news sources. They are actually sources which strive to avoid bias, but tend to watch their bottom lines very closely.
Second.
Lets compare and contrast here for a second:
Dan Rather, after the Killian documents was forced into retirement. The leftwing largely regards this as just, and thus you do not hear much about it from leftwingers because it was just.
Ann Coulter’s latest book contains demonstrable lies, monstrous accusations, and, more importantly, plaguarised segments. She is the darling of the right.
Compare and contrast: One was a well respected journalist who made one major mistake in a long, illustrious career of finding top stories.
The other was basically a nobody who built herself on lies, and spreading hatespeech.
One, was a liberal.
The other, a conservative.
For the liberal, a major error had consequences. For the conservative, worse, conscious acts of dishonesty, made her a star.
April 27th, 2007 at 12:41 pmWhat else do you expect from those dumbasses. I hope that Kiran Chetry realizes how fortunate she is to get away from those fools.
April 27th, 2007 at 12:42 pmWe’ve long known Fox News’ reporting was parody[…]
We’ve also long known right-wingers have a problem with truth, facts, and basic intellectual honesty.
Just read the post by our trolls, claiming to be lawyers, 75 years olds, veterans, using sock puppets, etc., etc. Which is the reason why they still support Pres Bush and watch FoxNews: They see nothing wrong with being less than forthcoming or being fed fantasies, as long as their belief system is kept alive.

This just goes to show that Fox does not do any investigating of the facts. It just repeats what sounds good, and plays dumb when called on it. It feels no responsibility to get the facts right, for them it is sufficient that someone said, wrote, reported something.
April 27th, 2007 at 12:55 pmCarolyn,
I really want to believe that our country at one time was based on acceptance of others, but I’m having trouble more and more trouble finding proof of this. This is also a country founded on the principle that black people were 60% human, after all. It seems to me that there’s always been some “other” for whom hatred was tolerated or even encouraged, be they indigenous Americans, Japanese internees, European immigrants, Hispanics, or Muslims.
I’ve just been reading the blog comments at the bottom of the two Sun Journal stories. If they’re any reflection of mainstream America, the xenophobia of Fox News is the rule, not the exception.
According to the Maine residents who’ve weighed in on the issue, this incident is all the fault of the Somali refugees for not properly assimilating (read: converting to Christianity) the moment they passed through Customs as they were fleeing their war-torn and internationally ignored homeland. Nearly all the comments say something about how these “welfare freeloaders” need to stop whining and learn how we do things in America. There are even a few comments that compare this incident to the banning of mandatory prayer in school, listing it as yet another “attack on Christianity.”
I agree that Fox is an American disgrace, but I have to wonder if it’s not just reflecting the general sentiment.

But that does not in any way reflect battles between the two. And is anecdotal only, since they might have been in different areas at different times.

April 27th, 2007 at 1:07 pmOur fourth estate is dying.
April 27th, 2007 at 1:08 pmAnd “Faux News Shouldn’t that be the name of CBS news, after their manufactured memos incident? No, of course not, because it was all about getting someone you didn’t like.
Comment by weary_G — April 27, 2007 @ 12:25 pm
I supposed you’re referring to Dan Rather, who by the way, lost his job> Do you have a point?
April 27th, 2007 at 1:09 pmIt seems that Lou Dobbs fell for this too. He did a segment calling out the Superintendent for taking the hate crime thing too far.
Comment by apark559 — April 27, 2007 @ 12:26 pm
But he based his segment off the facts not the spoof. But I still found it typical of his sometimes narrowminedness.
April 27th, 2007 at 1:11 pmWhen was the last time fox noise actually broke a news story?
April 27th, 2007 at 1:14 pmA good example of how the main stream media can control the sheeple. Another excellent example, Bill Moyers: Buying the War.
Comment by MediaFails — April 27, 2007 @ 12:38 pm
So you’re saying the Bill Moyers special is main stream media trying to control the sheeple?
April 27th, 2007 at 1:14 pmSeeing as we’re talking about Fox News, this is hardly surprising, and FNC has a history of this sort of thing. Does anybody remember the story they ran during the 2004 election season about Communists for Kerry (a blatantly right wing “parody” goup intended to portray Kerry as a communist) as though it was an actual group of Kerry supporters? The story remained on their website for quite some time before it was finally, and one imagines reluctantly, corrected.
April 27th, 2007 at 1:19 pmFNC is about as far from a legitimate news organization as The Onion, with the difference that the latter at least advertises itself as a parody. It’s quite clear that FNC will jump on anything that gels with its ideological biases, without bothering with such superfluous matters as research and fact checking, no matter how absurd.
yeah democrats go on FOX which enables and empowers FOX.
April 27th, 2007 at 1:20 pmHey Andrew — how come you’re all prickly about grammar but don’t care about spelling? Bad spelling hurts freedom lovers, too (whatever that was all about:-)

How often can the “Fox & Friends” crew screw up on national television and still keep their jobs? I would have been fired by now.
April 27th, 2007 at 1:28 pmUhmmm — I thought all Fox news was parody. You mean we’re supposed to take it for anything else? Who knew?

April 27th, 2007 at 1:34 pmIt drives me crazy when the media calls Jon Stewart’s show a “false news program” but continues to consider Fox News news. What kind of Orwellian world are we living in?

April 27th, 2007 at 1:42 pmweary_G:
The major difference is that for FNC this sort of sloppily researched, wholly ideological “reporting” is not some rare deviation, it’s policy. CBS certainly did screw up and was called to account for it; FNC does this sort of thing consistently without ever facing any real consequences. Another major difference is that the story CBS ran was, by all accounts, true; however, the supporting documentation was obviously bad (which is indeed unforgivable), and the Administration and its supporters managed to divert everyone from the main story by focusing on one of its numerous pieces of corroborative evidence.
April 27th, 2007 at 1:42 pmThe FCC has been infected by the Busheviks and won’t even touch this no matter how wrong or indecent. There is no longer an independent branch or office of federal government,Bush has all of them in his corner now, even the SCOTUS.Its over people. If you want to live in a democracy move out of this newly established police state while you can.
April 27th, 2007 at 1:49 pmFirst of all I’m from Lewiston Maine, which the incident accured.
April 27th, 2007 at 1:50 pmSecond, I used to watch Fox news knowing they were conservative.
Third, I was watching Fox that Tuesday at first I thought they just had some fact wrong but I also didn’t like they were mocking the people in my town because of past events that have happen in Lewiston. So I e-mailed them and told them what I thought…they didn’t reply they just mentioned that they “will have more tomorrow on this”. The next day I saw the news about them getting their news from a spook article and I sent another e-mail asking for them to appologize for their mistake and the mess it caused in my community…no reply and knowing they messed up they didn’t mention anything about it.
Forth, I will no longer watch Fox News Conservative is one thing inaccurate is another.
‘Hogwash’ is a good title for it…
April 27th, 2007 at 1:53 pmSomewhere above a poster stated the sad truth that this will now become the prank of the day against muslims. Fox owes the American people an apology for it’s bias and ignorance. The american people owe themselves to find a real news channel.
Fox are haterbaters and mob rule advocates.
April 27th, 2007 at 1:55 pmLooks like Brian’s get tired of the kool-aid.
April 27th, 2007 at 1:57 pmFOX check facts?? Then it wouldn’t be FOX (Faux), would it?
April 27th, 2007 at 1:58 pmTrue or not, it doesn’t matter to the RW propaganda machine. They “got it out there.” The message will be propagated to far more people than will ever see the retraction (if any). So it will have helped them: Muslims are trying to take over our culture and adhere to their religious beliefs. Done for hateful reasons, it’s wrong. But, while not the case here, I’m curious what would happen if someone innocently sat down and began eating ham? IMO, those offended by the action must bear the burden of dealing with it by, say, moving elsewhere. But, in my case, I’d probably move out of politeness for one’s superstitious beliefs.
But back to Faux, another item they’ve gottent “out there” is how libs overreact to any situation involving non-xians. And WRT to the content, it is playing to a Faux audience after all and hence it will be entertaining to them. Faux is preaching to the choir. Their viewers are already beyond redemption. I think it’s what that audience chooses to discuss with other, non-Faux (i.e. potentially intelligent) viewers. “On the news, I saw this stupid overreaction to some muslim sitting near a ham sandwich. Man, these guys are pissed off by everything. He’ll probably wear an explosive vest to school tomorrow. Har har, nyuk, nyuk. Ya know I heard one of these guys… .” This guy’ll never say anything about any apology (however unlikely), so the other guy is one step closer to the dark side.
All they need to do is “get it out there.”

Also from the Sun Jorunal:
“The post then appeared to legitimize the information by attributing The Associated Press as its source.
Larry Laughlin, chief of bureau for AP in Northern New England, said the parody was “clearly improper use of The Associated Press brand.”
“You can’t,” Laughlin said, “fancifully make up comments and add them to an Associated Press story.”
Lawyers for the AP are reviewing the parody post and will take action as appropriate, Laughlin said.”
Apparently Foxnews isn’t the only one guilty of sloppy journalisim.
April 27th, 2007 at 2:01 pmJust to everyone knows: the fake news story by Nicholas Plagman on AssociatedContent.com has been modified, either by Plagman or by AC, in three important details: (1) it was originally in News, not Humor, (2) it did NOT have any disclaimer saying it was a parody, now it does, (3) the trailer at the story end was originally “Associated Press”, which has now disappeared. Also, you can read in the earliest comments on that article (the first 50 or so), author Plagman explicitly responds “this is a true story”. He does NOT say that he invented numerous outrageous quotations and attributed them to real persons in the article, next to real quotations. Plagman is now trying to hide, saying it was a joke, clearly satire. It was NOT a joke when he filed it in NEWS, not Humor; when he filled it with fraudulent quotations attributed to real persons involved in the original story, and when he fraudulently attached an “Associated Press” trailer on the story. Plagman is a LIAR. And FoxNews are the fools we all know them to be. Do not, however, expect FauxNews to own up to their irresponsiblility in reporting it. Any simpleton can search Google News for Leon Levesque (the school superintendent) and quickly find all the accurate articles in a local Maine newspaper (the SunJournal). Except FauxNews, since they don’t know how to fact-check anything. Morons.

I think they knew that this was bogus. Your hatred of FN amazes me. Any live segment you have will often make mistakes, that’s a fact, unfortunate nature of the business. Am I trying to extol them for the incorrect report? Not at all. Dubya hisself got in on the act…
“We’ve also discovered through intelligence that Iraq has a growing fleet of manned and unmanned aerial vehicles that could be used to disperse chemical and biological weapons across broad areas,” Bush said in preparation for a congressional vote authorizing the use of force against Iraq. “We’re concerned that Iraq is exploring ways of using these UAVs for missions targeting the United States.”
Air National Guard Chief Paul Weaver told Fox News, “If they could organize something like Sept. 11 this would be very doable.”
This was nothing short of insane. Nobody in Iraq had anything to do with September 11 and nobody in Iraq ever even dreamed of attacking US cities with DRONES. The people at Fox are just incredibly stupid and deceitful. They work hard at being that way, as this latest incident reveals.

“The massive Dickey-Lincoln Dam, a $227 million hydroelectric project proposed on upper St. John River in Maine, was halted by the discovery of the Furbish lousewort, a plant previously believed to be extinct.â€
An article that ran in 1999 in Maine’s Portland-Press Herald contains the following passage:
“The massive Dickey-Lincoln Dam, a $227 million hydroelectric project proposed on upper St. John River, is halted by the discovery of the Furbish lousewort, a plant believed to be extinct.â€
So, do you want me to go further into just how your favourite little hatemonger isn’t even an original liar?

April 27th, 2007 at 3:53 pmWait a second everybody… YES, the people at Faux News are idiots. However, this was substantially a real story. The article above states: “This _actual story_ was then spoofed by a parody site called Associated Content, which made up quotes and details, such as the school’s intention to “create an anti-ham ‘response plan.’â€
There was a real ‘ham incident’ at the school and people actually got upset about it. Faux didn’t do their homework, but even if they had, they would have found that this was a real incident, gussied up by the parody site.
And they’re right to be outraged that Moslems would make a big deal about this. Americans have been eating ham now for 400 years. If they find our culture offensive for stupid religious reasons they don’t have to live here.
Pardon me while I duck as the religious extremists of Evangelical Christianity and Militant Islam lob shells at the middle of the road.
April 27th, 2007 at 4:04 pmcrazy aunt
There is a difference between the two incidents:
Dan Rather was forced into retirement for his mistake. A fact the left, however reluctantly, agrees with. There was no stirring defence of Dan Rather on his mistake, he was negligent he had to pay for it.
Fox News however, will simply go on as it always had without a single person even getting repremanded.
Sure, Dan Rather’s mistake was on a big issue, sure, the Fox News error is a minor one, but the inherent principle shown here is that a leftwinger will get held to account where the right won’t even get legitimately embarrassed. The so-called “Liberal” media will hold its reporters to account on this sort of error, the neoconservative media doesn’t even care.

Excellent replies by the way Bruce. I appreciate your method as opposed to the name calling and other trite replies to my post. I shouldnt’ve graced half of them with a response. Your method is thoughtful and even has the potential to bring one around to your way of thinking.
While I can agree that her comments on the Dickey-Lincoln Dam were way to close for comfort I can’t help but think back to my experience in writing research papers. A proffesor once told me that when you read 6 -8 books and 20 + articles on a subject there’s bound to be some “strong paraphrasing” sneaking in to your paper.

There is a difference between eating a ham sandwich and specifically setting out to make that sandwich a means of insulting others. What the Islamic kids were complaining about wasn’t eating the sandwich, it was using the sandwich as a means of insulting them.
It is a bit like if you started making a point of slapping a nicely grilled rump steak on a Hindu’s plate. It would be seen as a mortal insult to that Hindu, and would thus earn you the title “Jerk” in any normal setting.

This is pathetic … and it’s not just fox.
