April 28th, 2007 at 4:34 pmSynapsis of Articles of Impeachment Against Vice President Richard B. Cheney
Articles of impeachment exhibited by the House of Representatives of the United States of America in the name of itself and of the people of the United States of America, in maintenance and support of its impeachment against him for high crimes and misdemeanors.
Artice I
The Vice President of the United States, Richard B. Cheney, has purposely manipulated the intelligence process to deceive the citizens and Congress of the United States by fabricating a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction to justify the use of the U.S. Armed Forces against the nation of Iraq in a manner damaging to our national security interests.
(1) Despite all evidence to the contrary, the Vice President actively and systematically sought to deceive the citizens and Congress of the United States about an alleged threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction.
(2) Preceding the March 2003 invasion of Iraq the Vice President was fully informed that no legitimate evidence existed of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. The Vice President pressured the intelligence community to change their findings to enable the deception of the citizens and Congress of the United States.
(3) The Vice President’s actions corrupted or attempted to corrupt the 2002 National Intelligence Estimate, an intelligence document issued on October 1, 2002 vote to autorize the use of force. The Vice President’s actions prevented the necessary reconciliation of facts for the National Intellgence Estimate which resulted in a high number of dissenting opinions from technical experts in two federal agencies.
The Vice President subverted the national security interests of the United States by setting the stage for the loss of more than 3,300 United States service members; the loss of 650,000 Iraqi citizens since the U.S. invasion; the loss of approximately $500 billion in war costs which has increased our federal debt; the loss of military readiness within the United States Armed Services due to overextension, lack of training and lack of equipment; the loss of United States credibility in world affairs; and the decares of likely blowback created by the invasion of Iraq.

April 28th, 2007 at 5:29 pmBombing, what bombing. It won’t be involved in any count of casualties. The Bush administration has stopped counting deaths caused by bombing because they were blowing their “good news” statistics, about how well the surge is working, all to hell. I wonder if Bush has stopped counting US casualties when they are blown up by bombs. I wouldn’t put it past him. Our 3,300+ statistic is only the soldiers who have died on Iraq soil. It does not count the soldiers who died in a helicopter on the way to Germany, nor does it count soldiers who later died from wounds they received in Iraq. If the US government was honest about the cost in soldier’s lives because of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, I would be willing to bet it’s more than twice the number they tell us. I truly believe that the Bush Administration is incapable of telling the truth about anything. They have been telling lies for so long, they are starting to believe their own lies.

“A former National Security Agency employee who was convicted in federal court in Greenbelt of unlawfully possessing classified documents has been unable to file an appeal because federal prosecutors won’t allow him or his attorney unconditional access to court transcripts, according to court papers.
The reason, according to court filings, federal prosecutors and a legal expert: Some of the material contained in the transcripts could be classified.
Under federal law, classified material cannot be made part of the public record, because doing so would violate the Classified Information Procedures Act, enacted by Congress in 1980 to protect government secrets.

You are right. A surge, either great or small, can never work because the Iraqis will always resent the unwanted presence of the U.S. military on their soil. One of the most absurd slogans and beliefs to come along in a while is the one that says support the troops. So many people in this country continue to lionize U.S. troops while ignoring the fact that those soldiers are occupying and terrorizing a country against its will. Perhaps if the average American and journalist were to imagine a foreign soldier walking down an American street in battle fatigues and, in particular, holding an assault rifle in his hands then possibly, just perhaps, he or she might have an inkling why the average Iraqi looks at an American soldier with such fear and loathing. Perhaps if they were to picture a foreign soldier barging into their homes and ransacking their house and terrorizing their occupants, then maybe they might finally have an idea why most Iraqis hate the U.S. military and the U.S. government. But unfortunately in this country, American exceptionalism will continue to be the rule rather than the exception. Over 650,000 Iraqis dead because of the invasion of their country by the U.S. military. The best way to support the troops is to bring them home as quickly and as rapidly as possible.

TP has made is clear they are not in favor of impeachment. The more damage the Bush administration creates, the better for the Democrats, is pretty much where they are coming from. Sorry…playing politics with people’s lives and our civil liberties is not a game that Progessives should play. Or would NOT play…if they were really Progessives, and not “Here’s the new boss, same as the old boss.”

Clinton seems to be a socialist and she likes war. I don’t trust her or her fake southern accent. Obama is more of the same if you ask me and I don’t feel that even if they were both honest they would be able to do the job.
Once I found out that Dennis Kucinich was against the 2nd Amendment I realized that he was also against the 4th since the only way they will get my guns is by sending guys with guns to kill me after they kick my door in, so he is out. I could get into his young English wife but I would like her to simply remain as his problem and never this nation’s problem. When OLD men take YOUNG wives like that I get the wrong vibe and I believe that for this election electing a potential fool is not an option.
So Mike Gravel’s platform seems sane and while I have more checking to do I am pretty sure that he accepts the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights as the bible of the nation (in a manner of speaking). He has debated well against Clinton, Obama and the rest. He is mature and acts mature. He seems like a peace loving person but I would trust him with the military just the same.
Like I say it seems like the US is just one big fat FIX and I would bet that the MILITARY has ‘RUN’ things for ages so nothing we do will matter if it differs from “THE PLAN” but one can at least dream of better days.

Then TP is clearly ignoring the grass roots of the progressive movement, at their own peril. As are most of the Democratic leaders.
If they do not support impeachment for such blaring crimes, then they are neither defendersof the American people that they claim to be nor are they truely defenders of the Constitution.
They should change from ThinkProgress to ThinkRepublicanLite if they are going to support crime in the White House to be unpunnished, IMHO.
If they do not get punnished for their crimes, the same group of thugs will be in the White House when the Next Repuke gets elected. Andit will start all over again.
It wasn’t cleaned up with Watergate and Iran Contra, and they are doing it again NOW.
April 28th, 2007 at 6:42 pmThe following post was submitted by “good Christian” Patrick1 on another thread yesterday:
The left knows so little about Christianity that they believe Christian and terrorist or someone who plants a bomb can be a Christian. It is impossible.
You should stick to talking about things you know something about, like the minimum wage.
Comment by Patrick1 — April 27, 2007 @ 5:03 pm
I thought this was so wonderfully telling about right-wing “Christians” who have blindly supported the bombing and terrorizing of Iraq (remember “shock and awe”, for instance). I actually do agree with Patrick1’s assertion above to an extent, since I agree that it’s impossible for a “true Christian” to be a terrorist. What this of course means, is that most right-wing Christians aren’t “true Christians” and instead are only poor hypocrites. It may sound like I’m anti-Christian, but I’m not that either. I’m not a Christian, but I DO whole-heartedly support and applaud “true Christians”, but lo, in this world, they seem to be very rare. I would guess that Mother Theresa was one of those very rare “true” individuals. War-mongers (like most of the right-wing) are NOT “true Christians”. They only think they are.
Way to go, “good Christians”, you killed 66 more Iraqis today. I don’t understand how you can possibly reconcile your purported Christianity with your responsibility for these acts of terror.
April 28th, 2007 at 6:42 pmGravel certainly stole the show, didn’t he? I love this guy’s candor! He calls a spade a spade and I especially enjoyed the shocked looks on the faces of the other candidates, particularly Hillary who was standing next to him.
Gravel will keep these “business as usual” (except Gravel & Kucinich) candidates honest until they drop by the wayside.
Frankly, although Hillary’s answers were the sharpest and most succinct in the time permitted, Obama tanked as far as I was concerned and I was a huge fan of his until the debate. He seemed at a loss when speaking extemporaneously while Hillary sounded rehearsed, contrived and canned.
Biden, Edwards & Hillary voted “for” the war and although Edwards, in his hindsight, noted his error in judgment, Hillary still is unyielding in terms of actually uttering those humble words: Yes, I made a mistake, folks! This is definitely something we DO NOT need again. We’ve got that with Bush right now – the INFALLIBILITY FACTOR.
Also, I found it interesting how the Rethug talking heads all were oozing compliments about Hillary’s performance. BE NOT DECEIVED FOLKS! This is a Rethug “talking point”. Supporting Hillary, when they know that they have serious goods on her (Whitewater & Vince Foster) means that if she is elected Candidate Hillary, then they will have a slam dunk with theirs once they bring forth the avalanche of scandalous evidence they have on her.
She’s an intelligent, articulate woman and it’s a shame that she has so many skeletons in her closet because the people absolutely will not tolerate one iota of the whisper of corruption in their next president….once burned….

April 28th, 2007 at 6:50 pmOff topic but wondering: What’s up with Dick Durbin’s gag order and not disclosing what he knew to the american people about the pretext for the Iraq war?? To whom does Dick Durbin owe “first allegiance”?? To the american people, that to whom. How dare this administration swear people to secrecy when they are lying their asses off in everyone’s faces? How dare them!
As well, Dick Durbin (and I think Bob Graham was sworn to secrecy) did NOT serve the best interests of the american people who just happen to pay his salary. He and anyone else who “aided and abetted” this administration in the lying up to the war (which has resulted in thousands of deaths (genocide) to our soldiers needs to be held accountable to the people.
This is total chicanery and the people have had a belly full of it. I don’t accept this nonsense of an elected official NOT being allowed to tell the truth. What the hell is this: Communism??? We know it’s Fascism but give me a break.
April 28th, 2007 at 6:50 pmPersonally, I believe it’s a total “copout” at this point to the american people to NOT support impeachment. Granted there are large tasks at hand but if this country and it’s people do not pursue the “next right thing”, we will never regain the respect of our peers and our own nation. Patriotism is at an all-time low and I believe that the mere act of proceeding forward with impeachment will send a signal to the people that this level of corruption will no longer be tolerated. Unless Congress makes at least this attempt toward impeachment, Congress and any liberal blog will lose respect because it is clearly out of phase with the wishes of the populace.

One hopes that the same fate that befell Nader in 2000 [when the Democrats shut him out of the debates] does not also happen to Gravel. I was also struck by a comment that was given after the debates by Keith Olbermann, whom liberals love to call as one of their own, when he smeared Gravel by comparing him to Zell Miller. The irony is that Olbermann is a fan of the film Network and one would have thought that Olbermann would have recognized that Gravel is a lot closer in ideology to Howard Beale than to Zell Miller. This country needs to hear from more points of view like Gravel and recognize that there may be more than a grain of truth in what Gravel says instead of having people like Olbermann attempt to marginalize Gravel by comparing him to Zell Miller.
April 28th, 2007 at 6:55 pm#42 I echo your sentiments although I’m at a loss as to whom I believe could handle the job at this point. While the candidate field appears to be quite rich, it is still quite lacking in many respects. Frankly, there isn’t one candidate who embodies everything that the position requires and who would put the welfare, hopes, and desires of the american public first.
I’m beginning to now think that perhaps the real “candidate” has not even appeared on the radar yet???
Maybe it will be Al Gore coming to the aid of the party? I’d love to see Feingold run as Gore’s Veep….to me that would be the “dream ticket”….and pretty indestructible at this point.

…the ffp media pundits seemed to all concur that Obama fell down (and Hillary won the debate) by virtue of ONE question…
…”What if there were simultaneous terrorist attacks on two cities, what would you do as president?”
Hillary answered that she would “prudently RETALIATE against those responsible”…
…Obama responded that given the history on Katrina and 9/11…
… he would “review the policies, communications and response capabilities of FIRST RESPONDERS…”
…in other words…
…Obama would ensure that the victims and FIRST RESPONDERS (the “people” ) were taken care of first (as a paramount concern)…
…and Hillary would STRIKE BACK and seek revenge (as HER paramount concern)…
…given the “faulty intelligence”, broken communications capabilities and lack of FIRST RESPONDER preparedness in this country…

Impeachment is critical in this case. Remember that approx 600,000 Iraqis have been killed by our military. By not impeaching we are sending a message that mass murder is fine. It was not that long ago that we were reading that US soldiers were sticking flashlights up kids’ asses to get their parents to talk. That sort of brutality is hoist up as necessary! We have long past crossed the Rubicon and now people like Pelosi expect us to covet these ruthless plunderers!

April 28th, 2007 at 7:15 pmWayne: I couldn’t concur with you more in that, if we simply sweep all of this wrongdoing under the rug, how can we look our children in the eye? We become complicit and just as guilty as those whom we allow to get away with corrupt & illegal activities. Besides, that’s precisely why this country has become so amoral – when people realize that those at the top are corrupt, then they feel that they should definitely not be held to a higher standard. This is precisely why we continue to see daily scandals….and they work from bottom to top and top to bottom.
It’s time for americans to put up or shut up. Either stand for something for which our kids can be proud or just keep the same MO – hypocrisy – going ad infinitum. We will never be respected by our children and grandchildren if we continue to allow criminals to not be brought to justice because it’s “difficult” or “time consuming”. Hell, if we nipped this budding fascism back during Bush 41, we would not be in the abyss we find ourselves in today.
The progress this country has realized over the past 200 years has been destroyed in 6 brief years. It’s at the tipping point right now and promises to crash & burn if we pretend that we are impotent to uphold the laws of this country because the people in the highest places are acting criminally.
If we don’t have the courage of our convictions and enough real patriotism to “police our own” when we know that our true enemy is the “enemy within”, then we are finished as a nation.
Indicators are telling us that we have lost respect of the international community during Emperor Bush’s reign. Do we just sit back and continue to decline because it’s “difficult” or “time consuming”….I think not! It’s rallying time for all american patriots to put our money where our mouth is! It’s “cryin’ time” for the Bushevites.

April 28th, 2007 at 7:24 pmHey Errol! I remained up into the wee hours to watch Olberman’s “take” on the debate and was quite chagrined to see him belittle Gravel. I guess it’s part & parcel of the adage: The Truth hurts?? Olberman’s attempt to besmerch Gravel’s candor and incredible honesty epitomizes the level of american “brainwashing” which all americans experience. From the time we are born, american superiority has been inculcated into our brains and CNS and it’s not until we fully “awaken” spiritually that we realize that we’ve been cloned to believe something which is patently untrue!
We like to espouse the maxim that “all men are created equal” yet we indulge in the worst type of hypocrisy when we feel that we, as americans, have a birthright to own the world. That we, as americans, are somehow superior intellectually and therefore should be revered and automatically respected in the international community. It’s a pure, unadulterated “crock” and Gravel had the stones to say it when he said that “some of these people up here scare me”…..well, hello….they scare me, too!
They scare me because from all appearances, other than Kucinich and Gravel, they’re all clones. Every last one of them is afraid to speak the truth – they’ve all been brainwashed too in terms of what is appropriate and what is not….just the same as Dick Durbin was aware of the lies in the pretext for the war but was “sworn to secrecy” – in other words, he could not tell the truth.
It’s absolutely refreshing to have someone like Gravel up there as a contender. It gives all americans that small glimmer of hope in this “dark night of the collective soul” that we will finally see an end to this government of corruption, government of cronies, government of lies and secrecy, government of spying on it’s citizens, government which calls itself a democracy but is moving away from it toward Fascism at lightening speed.
So, the next time we’re ready to show the people of Iraq how to run a democracy, I suggest that we take a long, hard, painfully scrutinizing glance at our own. We no longer have a democracy in this country – we’re only believing the lie that was fed to us since infancy!
April 28th, 2007 at 7:26 pmClinton seems to be a socialist and she likes war.
Like I say it seems like the US is just one big fat fix and I would bet that the MILITARY has ‘RUN’ things for ages so nothing we do will matter if it differs from “THE PLAN” but one can at least dream of better days….

…I’m afraid you’re absolutely right veritas…
…but it’s NOT because of brainwashing…
…it’s because the DUHmerican “centrist concervative Democrats and Independents”…
…CAN”T HANDLE the TRUTH…
…the candidates on the Democratic side learned well the lessons of…

#53: original veritas,
That was wonderful.
It’s too bad that TP falls into those that are being complicit.
We should copy that post and send it to the TP’ers who ignore us at every turn.
Change has to happen locally, and branch out.
If TP can’t see the actual truth, then we should SHOW them…..

April 28th, 2007 at 7:48 pmI just checked icasualties.org and 99 Americans have been killed in Iraq so far in April. This continuing slaughter will “convert” a number of Republicans once the 2008 election draws closer. All we need is to get more votes on the record so they can be held accountable in 2008.

…thanks for the exhaustive list… :-)
…wish I knew the particulars of each…
…as we all (who follow government)…
…realize that there are constituency, moral, and personal interests involved…
…in each individual vote…
…as for your highlighted Patriot Act (renewal) vote of 3/2006…
…I’m all for it…
…in hopes that we’ll (the Democratic Congress’ leadership that is)…
…be able to use it against the CRIMINAL, TREASONOUS Bushites…
…as for those other votes I can’t really comment on them w/out specifics…

April 28th, 2007 at 8:49 pmOh and I highlighted the (un)Patriot act because that is a baaaad bill. It needed repealed not re-authorized.
That was the one they slipped the provision in for replacing USAs without consent of congress ( that part they reciently repealed)
Obama voted for it and probably didn’t read it.

April 28th, 2007 at 9:06 pmWayne I leave you with one more thought…
…in the Patriot Act renewal hearings…
… Abu Gonzo went before the senate committee and pledged (under oath no less)…
…that it was not the “intent” of this administration to replace USAs…
…without FIRST seeking Senate confirmation on any replacement(s)…
…months later Gonzo DOES exactly the opposite…
…providing the Senate investigative bodies/committees with an “issue”…
…with which to investigate the DOJ (and its leadership)…
…this lead to access to the “emails” which in turn have lead to…
…WH emails using RNC computers and network to communicate privileged information…
…in possible violation of the Presidential Records and Hatch Acts…

April 28th, 2007 at 9:59 pmTrue Blue: I stopped blogging at C& L because that blog administrator didn’t want to entertain any other version of 911 than the “official story” which is now being debunked by scientists, eye witnesses, and people who are validly contradicting that official story.
It’s unfortunate that when one purports to stand for “truth”, they find it necessary to censor it….or at the very least, sort & cull it to fit their own agenda.
Fortunately (for a great many of us whom I shall refer to as “truth seekers”) the truth is not some illusive concept “out there” but right inside of us because we, as humans are actually hard wired for truth. When it smells like a rat, our intuition (gut reaction) and viscera tell us so. We override that visceral reaction often because it is either too “realistic” and doesn’t fit into our idealistic snapshot of whom we want to perceive ourselves to be OR something even more sinister and crippling – for egoic purposes.
When we begin to place restrictions on “truth”, we’ve already lost it. When we begin to censor topics which may not fit our world view or our national view (inculcated perhaps since childhood), then we have already diverged from actual truth.
The people of this country have been lied to so heinously that we are all still reeling from the overwhelming sense of betrayal by people whom we trusted most; however, this is no reason to attempt to delude ourselves by taking possibilities (and now probabilities) off the table because for some cockamamie reason like deciding it’s somehow unpatriotic. As it is rapidly turning out, those whom are doing the namecalling are precisely the ones who could be labeled as “unpatriotic”.
In Bush’s Orwellian universe, everything means the opposite anyway.
April 28th, 2007 at 10:10 pmBTW, where is the impeachment rally article? I’ll give them the benefit if the doubt here because it’s the weekend and they may have a skeleton crew. I would hope that something this critical which is clearly expressing the will of the american people will find itself here soon. I’ve noticed that once the administrator of C & L began censoring and manipulating the news, bloggers left in droves. Now they’re fortunate to have a handful of responses to any of their threads.
April 28th, 2007 at 10:13 pmSynopsis of Articles of Impeachment Against Vice President Richard B. Cheney
Article II
The Vice President of the United States, Richard B. Cheney, has purposely manipulated the intelligence process to deceive the citizens and Congress of the United States about an alleged relationship between Iraq and al Qeada in order to justify the use of the U.S. Armed Forces against the nation of Iraq in a manner damaging to our national security interests.
(1) Despite all evidence to the contrary, the Vice President actively and systematically sought to deceive the citizens and the Congress of the United States about an alleged relationship between Iraq and al Qeada.
(2) Preceding the March 2003 invasion of Iraq the Vice President was fully informed that no credible evidence existed of a working relationship between Iraq and al Qeada, a fact articulated in several official documents.
The Vice President subverted the national security interests of the United States by setting the stage for the loss of more than 3,300 United States service members; the loss of 650,000 Iraqi citizens since the U.S. invasion; the loss of approximately $500 billion in war costs which has increased our federal debt; the loss of military readiness within the United States Armed Services due to overextension, lack of training and lack of equipment; the loss of United States credibility in world affairs; and the decades of likely blowback created by the invasion of Iraq.
