After two plus decades in the US I still admire (or better, I am puzzled) by the degree fellow Americans trust (or take pride in) their government, (supposed) "checks and balances", etc. etc. I happened not to believe that government or Wall Street or local school board, police, etc. operated that MUCH differently under Clinton or Dems-controlled Congress. How come, for example, that one can make up swindles, pretending that Saddam has WMD, launchable in 45 minutes, send 200K soldiers plus enormous logistical support half world around with no checks, no balance to cry: faul! No oposition party, no "free press", nothing. --- Looking for example at just aired Dem prez candidates forum: Almost all talk persuasively about some kind of universal health coverage. Yet it will never happened because the system is so short-sighted individualistic and even "reasonable" people do not want "socialized medicine" which universal coverage supposedly is. Secondary (or worse) issues are fiercely debated, the most important things almost ever on the table.

Comment in reply to James Kirk (#102) : "why were we giving $40 M to Brazil?"

Brazil is conducting some of the most progressive HIV prevention work in the world, which includes needle exchange and condom promotion among sex workers. They competed for a grant from the US state department, and were awarded it. In the 'red tape' of the contract was language requiring that Brazil condemn prostitution, which is now standard USAID lingo in contracts under Tobias, including PEPFAR (the President's Emergency Fund for AIDS Research). Rather than undermine their own program, which had been proven successful, Brazil decided that they were not hypocrites and GAVE the money back to the US. rather than sign the contract.

Now THAT takes chutzpah. I think they should get the $$ back given the scandal over the last few days.

Why is everyone complaining? This is just typical scumpublican behavior. Everyone knows what the scums are like when they vote for them. But they do it anyway, which means that it just doesn't matter.

Just spout Jesus, and you can do what you want.

This is typical of the members of the priveleged class -- that tight knit little club of executives that travel from corporation to corporation robbing them blind. Laws are for those who can't afford good lawyers.

The fatal flaw in politics is that the scum always rise to the top. Once a small % of the population acquires more power than everybody else, then they are easily corrupted and compromised in numerous ways.

Direct democracy is the ONLY solution to this, whereby each citizen has equal political power.

Representative goverment simply doesn't work, nor will it ever work. The only people the reps end up representing are their own interests. Just look at the constant proof all around! Greed for money and greed for power corrupt it, ALWAYS.

Calling an escort for just a massage is similar to say going to a restaurant for just a drink. Does this sound logic?

The thing that bothers me about this "administration" is the arrogance. They all think they can do whatever they wish; that the rules apply to everyone else. This is an attitude that starts in the Oval office and trickles down. But the bigger issue here is that Bush has appointed fools like Tobias all over the government. And on that glorious day when President Nimrod finally leaves office, the new president, whomever he or she is, will spend all of their time revamping the departments these idiots have fouled up.

As usually it's not that I have any problems with people using escorts services, regardless of what they get out of it - be it a massage with happy ending or full-on sex.

Rather it's the fundamental law of leadership: Credibility. The quickest way to destroy credibility is to create conflict between what you say and what you do. '<em>Do as I say, not as I do</em>' is not leadership and is never acceptable policy. Leaders must always '<em>lead by example</em>' but also be honest about what subjects or policies on which they really can or will be able to maintain that leadership consistency.

In the case of an escort service: if you can't resist the need that you know will lead it, then do NOT moralize against that whole subject of sex. We adults (physically and mentally) know about sex and know the urges are both natural and sometimes unavoidable - most of us can live with those human urges in politicians if they aren't hypocrites about it.

The Bush administration seems to be too ideological, too ignorant or too stupid to understand this most basic, this most fundamental of simple human concepts. It's a consistent thread - every time there is something the Bush administration touched that later went bad, lack of leadership consistency has always been one of the root causes that triggered the fall. Classical Greek hubris gets mixed into it also.

…spotting the differences in:

Ann(drew) Coulter’s…Adam’s apple

Kate Obiern’e’s…shriveled, rodent-like features

…and Bab’s… resemblance to what a drooping 80 year old elephant vulva must look like…

…to name a few…

…as unpleasant and disconcerting as it is…

…it is STILL quite effortless…

mon chere grand papa.
SOrry to be late in getting back to you about this. I actually personally find the voices--not to mention what they have to say-- of the at least first two creatures you cite uglier than their actual visages. As for Babs, you mean she isn't an 80 year old elephant yet?

Getting a massage from an escort service means sex. For legitimate therapeutic massage their are professionals available and for as someone who gets therapeutic massage work for the past 25 years you have to have the same professional working in a legitimate environment. It takes a professional massage therapist a year to learn about an individual's legitimate needs. An escort service requires no licensing. I wonder if Tobias was charging his massage work to the government? p.s. when seeking legitimate massage whether the massage therapist is male or female doesn't matter.
