Brazil is conducting some of the most progressive HIV prevention work in the world, which includes needle exchange and condom promotion among sex workers. They competed for a grant from the US state department, and were awarded it. In the ‘red tape’ of the contract was language requiring that Brazil condemn prostitution, which is now standard USAID lingo in contracts under Tobias, including PEPFAR (the President’s Emergency Fund for AIDS Research). Rather than undermine their own program, which had been proven successful, Brazil decided that they were not hypocrites and GAVE the money back to the US. rather than sign the contract.

Now THAT takes chutzpah. I think they should get the $$ back given the scandal over the last few days.

Representative goverment simply doesn’t work, nor will it ever work. The only people the reps end up representing are their own interests. Just look at the constant proof all around! Greed for money and greed for power corrupt it, ALWAYS.

Rather it’s the fundamental law of leadership: Credibility. The quickest way to destroy credibility is to create conflict between what you say and what you do. ‘Do as I say, not as I do‘ is not leadership and is never acceptable policy. Leaders must always ‘lead by example‘ but also be honest about what subjects or policies on which they really can or will be able to maintain that leadership consistency.

In the case of an escort service: if you can’t resist the need that you know will lead it, then do NOT moralize against that whole subject of sex. We adults (physically and mentally) know about sex and know the urges are both natural and sometimes unavoidable – most of us can live with those human urges in politicians if they aren’t hypocrites about it.

The Bush administration seems to be too ideological, too ignorant or too stupid to understand this most basic, this most fundamental of simple human concepts. It’s a consistent thread – every time there is something the Bush administration touched that later went bad, lack of leadership consistency has always been one of the root causes that triggered the fall. Classical Greek hubris gets mixed into it also.

SOrry to be late in getting back to you about this. I actually personally find the voices–not to mention what they have to say– of the at least first two creatures you cite uglier than their actual visages. As for Babs, you mean she isn’t an 80 year old elephant yet?
