This morning on CBS’s Face the Nation, Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) expressed frustration with the White House’s public rhetoric about wanting to reach a compromise over Iraq funding. “They say we’re willing to compromise,” he said. “And then we don’t get any compromise.”
“We’ve already compromised,” Murtha said. “And we need to make this president understand, Mr. President, the public has spoken. There’s three ways or four ways to influence a president. One is popular opinion, the election, third is impeachment and fourth is the purse.” Host Bob Schieffer followed up, pressing him on whether impeachment was a serious option on the table. Murtha responded, “I’m just saying that’s one way to influence a president.” Watch it:

MURTHA: The White House says no. But the White House has said no to everything. They say we’re willing to compromise, and then we don’t get any compromise. We’ve compromised on waivers for the requirements for the troops, which is their own requirements, and also goals instead of requirements for the benchmarks.

Artice I
The Vice President of the United States, Richard B. Cheney, has purposely manipulated the intelligence process to deceive the citizens and Congress of the United States by fabricating a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction to justify the use of the U.S. Armed Forces against the nation of Iraq in a manner damaging to our national security interests.

The Vice President subverted the national security interests of the United States by setting the stage for the loss of more than 3,300 United States service members; the loss of 650,000 Iraqi citizens since the U.S. invasion; the loss of approximately $500 billion in war costs which has increased our federal debt; the loss of military readiness within the United States Armed Services due to overextension, lack of training and lack of equipment; the loss of United States credibility in world affairs; and the decares of likely blowback created by the invasion of Iraq.

It took Bush and Co. 8 1/2 months to put the forces and equipment (both insufficient) in place to start the invasion of Iraq. I suspect that it will take just about as long to pull them out in a phased process. If we left in a stampede, we would leave enough weapons behind to make Iraq the most powerful nation in the Middle East. Israel would move to second place.

Well, talk of impeachment might be how to influence the Republican Senators. There aren’t the numbers in the Senate at the moment to successfully impeach. But the Republicans might agree to override a veto to avoid the embarrassment of impeachment hearings.
I was interested in the order Murtha put them. Impeachment should have come last, but he put the purse there. They need to convince moderate Republicans to override the veto –should Bush actually do that– and threat of impeachment proceedings is a good way.

Article III
In his conduct while Vice President of the United States, Richard B. Cheney, in violation of his constitutional oath to faithfully execute the office of Vice President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has openly threatened aggression against the Republic of Iran absent any real threat to the United States, and done so with the United State’s proven capability to carry out such threats, thus undermining the national security of the United States.
(1) Despite no evidence that Iran has the intention or the capability of attacking the U.S. and despite the turmoil created by U.S. invasion of Iraq, the Vice President has openly threatened aggression against Iran.

Article VI of the U.S. Constitution states, “… all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be supreme Law of the Land.” Article II, Section 4 of the U.N. Charter states, “All Members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independance of any state…” Article 51 lays out the only exception, “Nothing in the present Charter shall impair the inherent right of individual or collective self-defence if an armed attack occurs against a Member of the United Nations…” Iran has not attacked the Untied States; therefore any threat against Iran by the United States is illegal.
The Vice President’s deception upon the citizens and Congress of the United States that enabled the failed U.S. invasion of Iraq forcibly altered the rules of diplomacy such that the Vice President’s recent belligerent actions toward Iran are destabilizing and counterproductive to the national security of the United States.
In all of this, Vice President Richard B. Cheney has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as Vice President, and subversive of constitutional government, to the prejudice of the cause of law and justice and the manifest injury of the people of the United States.
Wherefore Richard B. Cheney, by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial, and removal from office.

Best way to contact Reps and Senators in DC is by FAX. Emails may never be seen directly by the Rep or Senator. Phoning in you talk to a secretary basically jots your beef down on a ledger pad accomplishes very little, but faxes have to be stamped received and filed under your name. Sometimes the Rep or Senator actually reads some of them.
If you send a fax, then type your message on one single page. Use spellcheck to make sure all your words are correct. Try to keep your fax letter on one subject and never call the Rep or Senator any names. Be cordial, but firm in your convictions.

I met John Murtha in Chicago O’Hare airport about a year ago today. When talking to him about the Republic Party menace he patted me on the back and with a smile on his face said “Fuck ‘em”. As for Murtha bringing up Impeachment - it’s about damn time!
I feel the same, but our impatience should not engender frustration. Better to look at the reality of the situation. In a game of chess played by a Grandmaster, it is often hard to see the strategy needed to win. All we kibitzers can see is the immediate tactical move we want to use to “destroy” the other’s game. Only after some more moves have been made do we begin to realize what we thought of as a waste of time and missing a “great move” was not that at all.
So, look at it stratigically, in the overall view, and see how it looks.
First its Murtha, then Pelosi, then Finegold, then Kucinich. Now its Murtha (again), stepping up the pressure! And he is seen as a solid believable spokesman as opposed to how Kucinich is viewed, i.e. he is not way out there.
The “I” word, supposedly off the table, (off on purpose I believe, as it was too early for the American people to stomach, i.e. dems looking for revenge etc.) suddenly is back, now gently floated as a trial balloon (only one of 4 means of influence, he smooooothly said).
Is the public ready now? No doubt Reid, (the canny old boxer), Pelosi, Murtha, Waxman and others will be watching to see just how this is received. The MSM might just fall all over this “terrible mistake” by Murtha, and “try to make a fool of him.” They did that when he came out against the wa…er invasion. He is the point man on this issue, and our response will tell them what they can do to represent us without overstepping.
Rove would like nothing better than to have us get out in front of public sentiment so they would have the ball in their court.We must of necessity always be one step behind, a real trick to pull off.
I say bring on the MSM! The “I” word will become the ‘water cooler moment’ that can not be put, like the genie, back in the bottle.
Let’s watch our leaders carefully, and appreciate the sophistication needed to overcome this neo-con debacle of the last 26 years! They look to us for guidance! So, lets let them hear it from us! IMPEACH NOW!
Strength, passion, and awareness, but above all, a cany street smart approach, is needed in this dangerous time. In my view, our leaders know that! One step at a time. Blustering ahead like a bull in a china shop will make us look like just that, an emotional bunch of revengeful jerks to the easily manipulated general public.
Sadly, in this time of great need, damn it, our legislative branch was designed to act and react slooooly. Look how far we have come in the last 6 months!! I’m amazed. Last summer I was depressed. Today I’m cautiously ecstatic. Now there is an oxymoron.

April 29th, 2007 at 3:54 pmAs part of my professional duties, I’m in contact with state and federal legislators on a fairly regular basis, so I’d like to offer a couple of suggestions about the best way to get your message heard.
1. Believe it or not, but the best way - the BEST way - to get in touch with anyone in Congress is by fax. Email is reserved for constituents (and even then it tends to go into a black hole), snail mail takes anywhere between 4 and 6 weeks to reach them (thanks to heightened security measures due to the anthrax scares), and phone calls are answered by twenty-something interns who check a box next to a predetermined list of subjects.
2. When you fax them, be sure that your communication only contains one topic. Why? Again, because of the interns who pull the faxes and sort them by the first item addressed. If you want to vent about Alberto Gonzales, send a separate fax.
3. I know you probably won’t like hearing this, but the fact is that John Murtha is under absolutely no obligation to do anything with any correspondence sent to him by someone who’s not a constituent. If you live in, say, Virginia, and faxed him about impeachment, his office would forward your message to YOUR member of Congress. So, while Murtha is a convenient figurehead, it’s probably best to start with your state’s own Congressional delegation.
4. Lastly, when you contact anyone in Congress about any issue, you need to personalize it. These offices get thousands of action alerts every day, and most of them end up in a pile somewhere. You need to explain in a clear and effective way why this issue resonates with you and why your member of Congress needs to get involved.
If you follow these simple steps, your chances of success are much greater.

April 29th, 2007 at 7:36 pmThe House might impeach, but the Senate doesn’t have the numbers to convict. However, I still think that Murtha might be using it as a tool to gather the numbers necessary to overturn a veto. Better to override a veto than to face an impeachment trial.
It might make more sense to impeach Gonzales. I think the Senate does have the numbers there. And that would send a strong message. Certainly Cheney deserves to be removed from office, but he’s one dangerous dude with plenty of power behind him still.
Remember, impeachment only means removal from office. These jokers can be charged, tried, convicted and imprisoned after they leave office. And I think one should demand there be a full investigation beginning in the post-Bush world to the crimes of the past 7 years. I shouldn’t be surprised if the number of officials sent to jail exceeds that of Watergate.

I am referring to Senate Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin, D. Illinois, as reported in the Washington Times on 4/28/07. He was quoted as saying, “The information we had in the intelligence committee was not the same information being given to the American people. I was angry about it. Frankly, I couldn’t do much about it because, in the intelligence committee, we are sworn to secrecy. We can’t walk outside the door and say the statement made yesterday by the White House is in direct contradiction to classified information that is being given to this Congress.†This statement was made on 4/25/07 on the Senate floor about the run-up to the Iraq war in 2002.
Not speaking out against this country being taken to war illegally is an act of Treason!
It should be obvious to all that subversion against the interest of the people is about the worst crime possible.
Swearing secrecy to intentionally deceive the public and particular legislative bodies is treason in my books.
It is your public duty to do anything and everything in your power to stop the illegal war in Iraq as soon as possible. To do anything to the contrary would be considered support for a crime against the American people and crimes against humanity.
Defend the Constitution of the United States and this country against all enemies, both foreign and domestic!
Impeach Mr. G. W. Bush and Mr. R. Cheney post haste.

April 30th, 2007 at 9:04 amImpeachment is necessary but not sufficient for Bush, Cheney and Gonzales at a minimum. They need to be impeached in the house, tried and convicted in the Senate, indicted and held over for international war crimes trials to show the world the United States isn’t a continuation of the 1000 year Reich.
Ideally this will be timed so that Impeachment is concluded around November 2008 and goes to trial in the Senate with a verdict mid January 2009 after the 21 Republican senators up for election in 2008 have been replaced and a new Democratic president, vice president and attorney general are in office.
This can begin the process of correcting the damage caused by the 10th Congress even as the remaining Republicans are considered for protection under the endangered species act.

I’ve sent many a messages this way to the mis-guided Pelosi and others who use this scheme to avoid criticism by non-constituent contact.
As for impeachment, neither President Bush nor Vice President Chaney have not committed any high crimes or misdemeanors.
And there isn’t a politician in Washington or anywhere else that’s going to indict another politician for saying something untrue otherwise they would all be guilty, every last one of them! They know it and they aren’t going to start down that slippery slope.
