In his new book, George Tenet claims that, one day after 9/11, Richard Perle turned to him and said: “Iraq has to pay a price for what happened yesterday. They bear responsibility.” The Weekly Standard’s Bill Kristol leaps to Perle’s defense and challenges Tenet’s account:
Here’s the problem: Richard Perle was in France on that day, unable to fly back after September 11. In fact Perle did not return to the United State [sic] until September 15. Did Tenet perhaps merely get the date of this encounter wrong? Well, the quote Tenet ascribes to Perle hinges on the encounter taking place September 12: “Iraq has to pay a price for what happened yesterday.” And Perle in any case categorically denies to The Weekly Standard ever having said any such thing to Tenet, while coming out of the White House or anywhere else.
feeding frenzy, stay out of the pool…………
April 29th, 2007 at 6:25 pmMaybe, but we have heard the same thing from other sources. If the Bush administration has shown anything, it is that they are obsessed with Iraq. I don’t doubt that Tenet’s version of this is substantially correct.

April 29th, 2007 at 6:47 pmHuh, and here I was thinking that the Presidential Medal of “Freedom” that was bestowed upon Tenet by Shitfabrains was supposed to work as a muzzle. Tenet clams up about the parallel intelligence channels (OSP, WHIG, etc.), stovepiping, bogus centrifuges, nonexistent link between Hussein and Bin Laden, forged Italian documents, phony threat of ‘nukular’ production, botched Aug. 6 PDB while shitfa cleared brush, etc. and Tenet gets to…ummmm, what exactly did he get out of the deal again? He basically absorbed the fraudulent argument that there were intelligence failures at the root of everything that went wrong while he headed up the CIA.
I hope George Tenet’s good and pissed because he knows where all the bodies are buried and if they pull their usual full frontal assault to crush him, they better tread carefully.
Book hits the shelves tomorrow, by Wednesday Tenet will be a dangerously psychotic ex-member of the Clinton administration.
April 29th, 2007 at 6:49 pmOne tiny question: Isn’t today yet another day after 9/11???
April 29th, 2007 at 6:49 pmCNN has an article about half a dozen former CIA underlings of Tenet ripping him to shreds, and Michael Moore headlines the reception Gonzo got at his 25 year Harvard Law School reunion that is a must read… funny (?) I didn’t see a TP post on that one………..

Maybe Tenet got it wrong or the wrong date, but then again just because Perle was in France or any place else in the world doesn’t mean that he couldn’t have been in on a teleconference.
Whhere are we? In the 19th century?
Ever heard of a telephone, Bill?
April 29th, 2007 at 7:19 pmKristol is nit-picking — Perle said this, the calendar is irrelevant.

What a beautiful sight.
April 29th, 2007 at 7:27 pmNone of this matters. We already know that Perle & Kristol used 9/11 to invade Iraq. The outrage is that Kristol snagged a slot in Time magazine. That’s the outrage.
April 29th, 2007 at 7:33 pmQuestion: How many Alberto Gonzales personality types does Bush need in his White House?
Just watched the interview with Tenet, he came across to me as no better in knowing what the hell was going on in the CIA as Gonzales does in DOJ or Condi does at State.
Give me a break, you can see these people with whom you assume have a certain amount of brain matter come across as not knowing a damm thing all for protecting boy George. What gives?
April 29th, 2007 at 7:35 pmthen I’m sure Kristol will demand Tenet return his Medal of Freedom for being such a liar.
April 29th, 2007 at 7:40 pmthanks gang!

Tenet sounds like a piece of shit to me!@!
April 29th, 2007 at 8:01 pmIn spite of what Perle says, Tenet’s claim is plausible. I, for one, remember Paul Wolfowitz on CNN in the days immediately following 9/11 making the case that Iraq was behind the attacks.
April 29th, 2007 at 8:05 pmTenet sounds like a piece of shit!
April 29th, 2007 at 8:07 pmIf the results were not so tragic, it would be funny. You know the end is near when the rats turn on each other.
April 29th, 2007 at 8:11 pmWe all know who caused 9/11… don’t we?
April 29th, 2007 at 8:13 pmRichard Clarke, REPUBLICAN HAWK and REAL AMERICAN PATRIOT (yes, you CAN be both) told us 3 years ago that when 9/11 happened,
Bush: See if Saddam and Iraq are involved in this!!
Clarke: But Mr. President, this was AL QUEDA and Osama bin Laden.
Bush: Saddam!! Iraq!!
Paul O’Neill, former Treasury secretary, told it similarly.
So did the Downing Street SECRET INTELLIGENCE meeting, which said that the US “fixed intelligence” to suit their case for Iraq.
I don’t like Tenet, but he is MORE LIKELY to be telling the TRUTH here than
Bush, Perle, or Kristol…
April 29th, 2007 at 8:18 pmre # 29
they’re all pieces of shit. the only real differences is that some of them are runny, some have little pieces of corn stuck in them, others are filled with hair and bones from small mammals.
people like jake and patrick1 are nothing more than cheap toilet paper. they’re abrasive and do a terrible job of cleaning up after the shit.
I say let’s flush the whole lot of them, and if they clog the toilet, I’ll volunteer to take a plunger to Kristol’s smug face and jam him into the sewer.

April 29th, 2007 at 8:41 pm
Tenet appears to be another angry, arrogant liar who now is worried about his honor. Everyone should read the scathing letter on CNN.com from CIA operatives who do not hold back on criticizing Tenet in the harshest of terms. I am now waiting for anyone in the Journalism profession to ask politicians if they are now ready to impeach Cheney and Bush.
April 29th, 2007 at 8:44 pmA more interesting question to these “gentlemen” would be “How did you celebrate 9/11?” These two people among with many other neoconservatives and other elites have after all recognized the need for USA to have an attack that would work as a catalyzing trigger to kick off the PNAC world dominance plan.
April 29th, 2007 at 8:46 pmNow the liars are fighting about who lied to whom about what. They’re just criminal scum.

Comment by Mr. Bush Goes To Hell
Yes, but it’s an increasingly endangered species.
April 29th, 2007 at 8:56 pmI saw the 60 Minutes interview.
I felt some compassion for him on Osama, 9/11 and Afghanistan, thought he was an arrogant jerk about waterboarding not being torture, and I found him too evasion when it came to bad intelligence on Iraq, therefore I think he was as much in it as Bush and he was simply covering his own culpable rear end.
I accept that everyone is both good and bad. When it came to tracking Osama, he did a good job. When it came to assisting with making teh case for Iraq, he deserved to be thrown under the bus. I have no pity for him on that.
Scott Pelley, by the way, is asking the tougher questions. He’s no Ed Bradley yet – but he could be if he keeps getting the tougher assignments.

April 29th, 2007 at 9:43 pmHey Zep,
You’re going to give yourself nightmares….
April 29th, 2007 at 9:49 pmSaw Tenet on 60 minutes, too and could not believe his arrogance level! For someone who was as complicit in all of this as the day is long, he has some nerve shoving his version of torture down anyone’s throat. I think the guy is coming unhinged myself. He looked like a neurotic mess about to blow a gasket. He certainly has no space for anyone else’s version of things and became beligerant when asked critical questions. For some reason, all that I saw was a man, very much like Bush, who has his opinions and ideas about things and whether contrary to public opinion or to a given set of moral standards, he could care less. His ego was totally inflated, his self-control was borderline manic, and he’s trying to save his ass with this book. The way I see it, Tenet is as complicit as Perle. Perhaps Perle tried to brainwash Tenet by connecting Iraq & 911 but Tenet knew this was wrong and did nothing about it. Instead, George Tenet, along with the Bush Cabal has the blood of over 3,000 american soldiers on his hands.
Whatever happened to Colin Powell after he made a jackass of his credibility. I’d say Powell also has the blood of our children on his hands as well.

April 29th, 2007 at 10:33 pmOn Wednesday May 1st, the United States will mark the fourth anniversary of President Bush’s declaration of “Mission Accomplished” in Iraq. But as the carnage continues and the war funding debate rages, President Bush and allies in the conservative amen corners can only offer the American people recycled talking points to sell his catastrophically ill-conceived war without end.

April 29th, 2007 at 10:42 pmNote – wherever there is a serious attack on the White House the same old guards are mobilized. Condi hits the talk shows. Look for Cheney to give a couple of speeches or interviews in the next couple of days. Bush will use the talking points that worked for Condi and Cheney by Wednesday or Thursday. They have used the exact same tactic against Richard Clarke and Paul O’Neill.
These guys have lost all credibility.

Unfortunately, this happened to be the United States at a time when it needed decisive, informed leadership. And none of these yahoos had anything even close to the ability to step up and lead this country. They were instantly over their heads. And instead of asking for help and admitting their lack of ability to lead, they tried to bulls**t their way through, accepting no criticism and hoping that full speed ahead would be enough to get them through.

Unless one was on another continent and therefore who’s lying about a conversation even occurring is pretty easy to figure out.
April 30th, 2007 at 7:11 amThis morning on “Today” Tenet was asked about this. He apologized and said he may have had days wrong, but the substance of the quote is not incorrect.
April 30th, 2007 at 8:53 amWell if the context was correct we may have the first available evidence that there may be an effort to use 9/11 as a pretext for invading Iraq. Someone should warn someone about that.
If you want context go to NoQuarter and read the parts of that letter that TP didn’t quote. That’s who Tenet is.
Maybe 5 years from now Gonzales will publish a book about how he was abused by the administration he shilled for in the attorney firings issue.
April 30th, 2007 at 9:33 amPerle has been visited upon us from the dark side, and to believe him on the Iraq war is the height (or depth) of foolishness and denial. He, Cheney and the neocons are all on leave here from the depths of hell where they reside.
April 30th, 2007 at 9:42 amTenet is complicit in the war. Did he try to stop Powell from the UN appearance instead of sitting directly behind him in show of support?
Did he talk to Senators and express his doubts?
Did he appear on television and give interviews to papers stating his misgivings?
Did he reject the medal of freedom?
Tenet obviously has a very guilty conscience – and rightly so – but at least his guilty conscience is something more than anyone in the soulless, heartless and cold-blooded Bush&Co possess.
What about Stephen Cambone’s notes of Rumsfeld’s quotes directly ON 9/11?
http://www.outragedmoderates.org/2006/02/dod-staffers-notes-from-911-obtained.html
“”[b]est
info fast . . . judge whether good enough [to] hit S.H. [Saddam Hussein] at same time – not only UBL [Usama Bin Laden]” (as discussed on p. 334-335 of the 9/11 Commission Report and in Bob Woodward’s Plan of Attack).
In addition, the documents confirm the contents of CBS News’ Sept. 4, 2002 report “Plans For Iraq Attack Began on 9/11,” which quoted Rumsfeld’s notes as stating: “Go massive . . . Sweep it all up. Things related and not.”"
It’s not gonna get any more smoking gun than that…
April 30th, 2007 at 10:26 amThought George Tenet in all his righteousness and passion for the truth was going to jump out of his chair and attack Scott Pelley. Where was all that passion for the truth in his meetings with Bush? Not that it would have made any difference since the war was pre-ordained. Remember PNAC’s “What we need is another Pearl Harbor”? But Tenet would at least now have more credible talking points in selling his righteousness.
April 30th, 2007 at 11:06 amUpthread, the names Perle, Kristol, and Wolfowitz came up in connection with claims that Iraq was responsible for 9/11. Please bear in mind that all three were or are members of the Project for a New American Century (Kristol currently heads it), which was calling for the invasion of Iraq back in the 1990s. This is the same group that published a paper in 2000 in which the prospect of “a new Pearl Harbor” was touted as the only way to get Americans on board for such an invasion. The purpose of the invasion was to be the establishment of permanent American military bases in the Middle East.
April 30th, 2007 at 11:12 am“This morning on “Today†Tenet was asked about this. He apologized and said he may have had days wrong, but the substance of the quote is not incorrect.”
Maybe he said “the day after” 9-11, when he really meant that he heard Perle say it “the day before” 9-11.
