David Broder, who has repeatedly attacked Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) for saying the Iraq war “is lost,” said today on XM radio that it is “really doubtful” President Bush will be able “to salvage something that would look like a victory in Iraq.”
UPDATE: Broder also responded to recent criticism of him online: “I am not a fan of the blogs, and the blogs are not fans of mine.”
UPDATE II: Broder stands by his April 26 column on Reid, “The Democrats’ Gonzales”:
David Broder said he wouldn’t change anything in his April 26 column, which angered many readers and caused 50 members of the Senate Democratic Caucus to write a letter criticizing Broder in Friday’s Washington Post. [...]
The columnist also said he was “not surprised” that his Thursday piece drew such a negative reaction from the 50 senators and most of the many readers who flooded WashingtonPost.com with comments. “This war is so unpopular and for very good reason,” said Broder. “I’ve written many columns critical of this administration’s actions in Iraq, and most of the response of readers to those columns has been: ‘Right on.’”
Greg Sargent has more.
It is time for Mr. Broder to retire.
April 30th, 2007 at 4:58 pmAnother Reich Wingnut comes to his senses.
April 30th, 2007 at 4:59 pmThere’s gotta be a way to spin that shit into a victory, so we can get out of there.
April 30th, 2007 at 5:00 pmI GUESS HE THINKS NOONE LISTENS TO RADIO ANYMORE
April 30th, 2007 at 5:00 pmHarry Reid, David Broder, George Tenet. Who’s next? Maybe Cheney will find God and admit to his numerous lies and fabrications on the “threat” called Iraq. Bring on Hillary!!!
April 30th, 2007 at 5:00 pmI get it. It’s only OK if he says the Iraq War is lost.
April 30th, 2007 at 5:03 pmMan, just when you think these people couldn’t be bigger hypocrites and jackasses they manage to go below even the lowest of expectations.
I hope that have that audio queued up – along with Broder’s attacks on Reid – the next time he’s on Meet The Press.
April 30th, 2007 at 5:03 pmReport says terror attacks up sharply
By MATTHEW LEE, Associated Press Writer 30 minutes ago
WASHINGTON – Terrorist attacks worldwide shot up 25 percent last year, particularly in Iraq where extremists used chemical weapons and suicide bombers to target crowds, according to a new State Department report.
George W. Bush and terrorism, BFF.
April 30th, 2007 at 5:06 pmI wonder what Condi Rice’s definition of “victory” would be? Broder, what is the opposite of “victory”?
April 30th, 2007 at 5:08 pmThere is NO possibility of “victory” without killing nearly every single person that resists a foreign occupying force.
How that can be accomplished, no one seems to admit.
The reality, though, is that anytime aggression is used to solve problems in foreign policy, it ends up being a mess (to say the least)
countless thousands are murdered, deficits are massive, and liberties are restricted at home.
It’s time for a new direction. A foreign policy based on peace and prosperity – one where the US doesn’t meddle in foreign affairs, where the US doesn’t spend billions to prop up ruthless dictators, where the US doesn’t invade nations – period.
Some reading….“A Foreign Policy for America”

In David Broder’s next column he’ll be calling for his own resignation.
April 30th, 2007 at 5:10 pmAh, you people! There’s a BIG difference between saying the “war is lost” and that victory is “really doubtful.” On the won had you’re saying the war is lost, and on the other you’re saying that the war is just kinda lost.
Geez!
April 30th, 2007 at 5:17 pmso the difference between Border’s and Reid’s view of Iraq is one see’s it’s already a lost cause and the other see’s it will most likely be a lost cause. Realist get’s slandered and the dreamer does the slandering.
April 30th, 2007 at 5:18 pmYou break up with someone. Someone’s response: It’s not what you said, it’s the WAY you said it.
Not convincing in either context.
April 30th, 2007 at 5:22 pmOMG, and I am sure that Mr. Broder will be apologizing to Harry Reid soon. Don’t hold your breath. The Republics and Neocons never apologize and rarely even admit they made a mistake.
April 30th, 2007 at 5:23 pmAh, you people! There’s a BIG difference between saying the “war is lost†and that victory is “really doubtful.†On the won had you’re saying the war is lost, and on the other you’re saying that the war is just kinda lost.
Geez!
Comment by Spicy “D” Broder
Then, show me, sir, where this was ever called a war? Do you agree this was a police action? Was not this war about, as declared in the the resolution, means to use force and to enforce certain WMD claims?
This ‘war’, I remind you, was called operation Iraqi freedom, not GWOT.

It’s never going to happen as long as Tim Russert is on MTP. I can’t believe he is still acting as a Bush apologist after they way they trashed him in the Libby trial. But, I expect he is being paid hansomely for his loyalty. I just wonder how he sleeps at night.

I’m hoping it’s all tied up with the DC Madame. That would be so much fun, to find out all these guys are complicit because of blackmail and not ideology. It would make some sense anyway.
April 30th, 2007 at 5:37 pmI think he’s just auditioning for the Tony Snow(job) position. If Hilary wins, he might get it. And I’m not a fan of Hilary.
April 30th, 2007 at 5:42 pmOkay/Fine SDB
Let us dig shallowly deep.
Biblical, or not, Americas Oil Gluton future, driven by consumers (that is you SUV drivers) have helped, since 1938, corrupt a world.
Nevah da neg that’s one hard tuff nut to swallow no matter what party ideology you buy into.
We have, by the way of energy, become crack addicts. Blame no one, for if you do choose to point a finger, threes point back.
April 30th, 2007 at 5:51 pmShane -yes, yes, oh god, yes!
I can’t wait to see who was ‘ordering pizza’ from the DC madame. I don’t care which side of the aisle, either, but I’m betting a lot of them are family values fellas.
April 30th, 2007 at 5:53 pmLessee, victory “really doubtful”, war “not lost”,
April 30th, 2007 at 6:22 pmtranslates into…
stay there until Broder figures out what the hell he means.
Sounds like the chymp’s plan, ey whot?
he obviously failed to read any of the 46 pages of criticism he received for publishing his asinine comments.
Time to retire to sussex and keep bees.
Then you’d be doing somethig useful
April 30th, 2007 at 6:22 pmDoes this mean Broder still has to learn to engage mind before mouth opens? Or, in this case, before fingers type?
At any rate, it seems Broder has become an embarrassment even to himself, and there will be an episode in about, uh oh, six weeks or so where he will have apologise for having bungled Pres Bush’s case. Or, like in this case, where he should, but won’t, apologise.
He’s yet another brain-dead Bush cultist who tried to debate against reality, and lost the argument.
April 30th, 2007 at 6:33 pmBroder — working hard to make himself sound even more useless.
April 30th, 2007 at 6:38 pmWhaaaat? Is he saying he believes the same thing we do, except his manners are too dignified to say such a thing? as opposed to us, the unwashed masses.
What a hypocrite.
April 30th, 2007 at 6:39 pmThis guy talks like an idiot, on one hand he says that there is no victory in Iraq, and Bush might not be able to salvage something like a victory….
April 30th, 2007 at 7:07 pmon the other hand he is standing by his article attacking Senator Reid for saying just about the same thing…he is saying…war is lost…
