Perle Five Days After 9/11: ‘We Do Know Saddam Hussein Has Ties To Osama Bin Laden’

Conservatives appear to have correctly noted that George Tenet’s account of meeting Richard Perle at the White House the day after 9/11 was incorrect. Tenet has acknowledged the error, stating, “I may have gotten the days wrong, but I know I got the substance of that conversation correct.” Tenet says Perle told him, “Iraq has to pay a price for what happened yesterday. They bear responsibility.”

The controversy over Tenet’s recollection has helped refresh the record about what Richard Perle was advocating in the days after 9/11. As ThinkProgress noted earlier today, Perle signed a letter addressed to President Bush on 9/20/01 that stated the following:

[E]ven if evidence does not link Iraq directly to the attack, any strategy aiming at the eradication of terrorism and its sponsors must include a determined effort to remove Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq.

Today, CNN provided further evidence that Perle was pushing for an attack against Iraq shortly after 9/11. The network re-aired footage of Perle on CNN five days after 9/11 claiming that Saddam was linked to bin Laden. Perle said at the time:

Even if we cannot prove to the standard that we enjoy in our own civil society they are involved, we do know, for example, that Saddam Hussein has ties to Osama bin Laden.

Transcript:

CNN: The day after 9/11 where President Bush and his conservative allies making connections to Saddam Hussein, former CIA Director George Tenet describes an encounter that stunned him, he says, on September 12, 2001. Tenet claims as he was going in to the White House early that morning, Richard Perle was leaving. In his new book, Tenet writes that Perle, a so-called neoconservative who headed a Pentagon advisory board at the time, turned to me and said, “Iraq has to pay a price for what happened yesterday. They bear responsibility.”

TENET: When I remember thinking to myself as I’m about to go in and brief the president, what the hell is he talking about?

CNN: Perle tells The Weekly Standard he was in France that day and denies ever saying that to Tenet. Tenet says his dates may be off but insists the exchange happened. Here’s what Perle did tell CNN five days after 9/11.

PERLE: Even if we cannot prove to the standard that we enjoy in our own civil society they are involved, we do know, for example, that Saddam Hussein has ties to Osama bin Laden.

What is it with NeoCons that they can’t figure out that video and audio clicks can be rewound and listened to a second time or more?

  2. Your Conscience says:

Can someone please explain how lying about a blow job warrants impeachement and these crimes are ‘debated’?!

  3. Your Conscience says:

I am reminded one letter seperates Clinton from Bush

    1. Clinton – Blow Job
    2. Bush – Blown Job

  4. elle c says:

Fighting a war that we were misled into fighting and causing more tumult in the Middle East is not going to ensure national security. We have spent over $340 billion in Iraq, with the price tag rising, and no good has come out of it. There is no peace, no end to terror and worst of all we have left the Iraqi people in deeper poverty.

According to the Borgen Project, $340 billion has already been spent in Iraq and we have a $522 billion military budget. What has resulted from that money? The money would be better spent on plans such as the UN Millennium Development Goals to end global poverty. Just $19 billion annually can end starvation and malnutrition. Issues such as poverty foster a lot of the tensions that exist in the world today. As leaders in this world, we really need to get behind peaceful growth rather than war.

  5. Heterodoxy says:

These brownshirt Straussian fake Americans also known as Rape-Public-Cans are fortunate liberal and progressives are not violent people by nature……….unlike them.

  6. Heterodoxy says:

“Know” obviously means something very different to the neoCONS. It took me a while to realize it does NOT assert ‘knowledge” it is what they know after they have gone over the ledge.

  7. tarazan says:

That is exactly what PNAC plan was.

  8. Crump's Brother says:

I’m sure he doesn’t recall that conversation and would say so even after watching the tape of himself saying it. When the truth doesn’t work, just lie!!

  9. Yikes says:

Just like how Bush never uses the email, the video will get you just as well.

  10. Ben B says:

    #5, maybe we should be.

Uh oh, I just got put on a government watch list. I hope I don’t get abducted, then my torture outsourced…

  11. piltdown says:

Am I the only one that sees a demon when I look at the face of Richard Perle?

Evil eyes, sharp teeth and everything.

    Pure evil.

  12. profmarcus says:

i wish general william odom, along with four or five of his retired general officer colleagues, would join with larry wilkerson, james baker, richard clarke, russ feingold, chuck hagel, john murtha, harry reid, nancy pelosi, hell, throw in lee iacocca too, to sit down with bush in the oval office and lay the cards on the table…

“look, george… it’s over… iraq’s over… your presidency is over… you’ve got a choice… you can either gracefully resign along with dick cheney, or we’re going to bust our humps to remove you via impeachment… the country and the world can’t put up with any more, george… we’ve had it…”

And, yes, I DO take it personally

  13. piltdown says:

And ANYONE with a dual-citizenship should be exempted from government jobs.

    Talk about dual-loyalties!

  14. Angry One says:

The Saddam-Bin Laden link apparently is still on the RNC-approved list of Iraq talking points:

“We’ve removed an ally of al Qaeda, and cut off a source of terrorist funding.”
    - President Bush, May 1, 2003, “Mission Accomplished speech.

“Just to give you one example, Rush, remember Abu Musab al Zarqawi, a Jordanian terrorist, al Qaeda affiliate; ran a training camp in Afghanistan for al Qaeda, then migrated — after we went into Afghanistan and shut him down there, he went to Baghdad, took up residence there before we ever launched into Iraq; organized the al Qaeda operations inside Iraq before we even arrived on the scene, and then, of course, led the charge for Iraq until we killed him last June”
    - Vice President Cheney,

  15. ForTruth says:

Yeah the same ties I have, being a human.

  16. JaneESchneider says:

I really wish that the media would stop giving Perle a forum to lie from. He is an evil, slimy sack of lying shit. And Tenet’s no better.

  17. tarazan says:

Perle writing that the strategy MUST have determined effort to remove Saddam Hussein power from Iraq. Is Perle elected official, was he on 9/11?!!…..I don’t think so.
His letter sounds like he is ordering someone…!!

  18. AboveTheClouds says:

Wasn’t Perle the asshole who said there would be a “George W. Bush Blvd.” in Baghdad some day? East of Bush Blvd. they can put the Donald Rumsfeld Peace Park and on the west they can build the Dick Cheney School for Neoconservative Failure Studies with the soon-to-be-added Leo Strauss Wing.

  19. powkat says:

Piltdown – absolutely a demon. And did you ever notice that Rumsfeld’s eyes don’t reflect light – his glasses do but not his eyes? And Cheney’s human outer skin has been slipping in public lately.

  20. Tobey Tall says:

the best way to get America back is to control the media

dont get me wrong but if one of you were to hijack a plane and crash it into fox news building ……….. your half way there

and why cant the Anthrax guy just sprinkle a little over the airspace at a place called Crawford Ranch, Texas

  21. ataloss says:

Perle a neocon zionist. Period. Israel’s interests were his interests. He was willing to send Americans to die, and be maimed and willing to have a war with Iraq on the part of the United States, that certainly would kill off hundreds of thousands of Iraqi innocents. And not a single Israeli soldier was killed in the action. Not a single Israeli was wounded.

  22. Sg1234 says:

#13 “And ANYONE with a dual-citizenship should be exempted from government jobs.

    Talk about dual-loyalties”

GREAT point that doesn’t get enough attention.

  23. Alejandro says:

Perle was in France!! Don’t tell Bill O’Reilly!!

  24. Tobey Tall says:

Saddam Hussein also had Ties from the Sock shop , Even though there worldwide and socks when old can become WMD , but its not a terror org and might not need UN aproval to bomb the sock shops worldwide

  25. Zooey says:

And Cheney’s human outer skin has been slipping in public lately.
    Comment by powkat

Dick died 6 months ago, but his pacemaker doesn’t know it yet. The skin slips….ick.

  26. Rebel in CA says:

    13 & 20

I agree. Except it probably would not apply to those with US/Israeli citizenship. Foe example

    Cherthoff = Homeland Security
Wolfowitz = Deputy Defense / World Bank (Charged with spying in 1976 but somehow the evidence against him disappeared)

    Perle = Defense Policy Board

    Elliot Abrams

    Douglas Feith

    Henry Kissinger

    etc.

  27. Jay says:

Seems highly suspect that the likes of Perle were gearing up to retaliate against Iraq so soon after Sept. 11th 01′, especially considering the fact that there were no Iraqis involved. Richard Clarke pointed out that Bush and Rummy were making the same case almost immediately following that tragic day as well. These facts might lead one to believe that they had plans ready and just needed a trigger. Just a trigger…..

  28. valiant venus says:

Saddam and Osama were not on each other’s Ramadan card list. But it is curious Al Queda sent people to Iraq for extensive medical treatment and meetings. Make no mistake – Osama had no love for Saddam but he needed a safe place after the Taliban into the gunsights of the Bush administration.

Of course, Progs may not remember alZawahiri chastising alZarqawi in Iraq for videotaping the approved beheadings…..

Unfortunately, your expectation that radical Koranimals act like civilized people is unfair…..they can’t anymore…..

  29. veritas says:

ALL COMPLICIT CRIMINALS IN THIS WAR!

A new Pearl Harbor if you will.

    Further, the process of transformation,
even if it brings revolutionary change, is
likely to be a long one, absent some
catastrophic and catalyzing event – like a
    new Pearl Harbor.

  31. veritas says:

Unless and until the mainstream media begins to tell the truth to the american people without the propaganda, they need to be boycotted.
Either that or shut down entirely. They’ve become totally irrelevant to the people at this point. They’re looking like a big bunch of sycophantic Bush whores.

  32. veritas says:

Let’s face it….they cooked the books to fit a policy concocted by PNAC LONG before 911! For cripes sakes, they even had the Patriot Act all ginned up well in advance of 911. This was PNAC’s “another pearl harbor” and the american people fell for it – hook, line & sinker. Now it’s “cryin’ time” for everyone involved in this level of criminal activity – from the neonazis who contrived it, to the sycophantic media whores who spun it, to the GOP who supported it. Make no mistake: Hell will freeze over before the american people put ANY Republican into office again. The longer The Shrub engages in a pissing contest with the american people, the more profound the effect will be in 08 and perhaps for decades to come. He’s damaging the GOP with each passing day. Besides, the people will show this lying Shrub that he only “serves at the pleasure of the people” who run this country – not him.

  33. muckdog says:

Despite the allegations, Bush didn’t lie about anything regarding Iraq.

He acted on bad intel. The same bad intel that caused those “we must stop Iraq and their WMD program” quotes from Edwards, Hillary, Gore, Clinton, Kerry, et al back in 1998-2003. Were they all “lying,” too? Or commenting on bad intel?

    Nobody lied.

Except Bill about the blow job.

And Hillary faking that southern accent when speaking to southern blacks. Maybe that’s just “pretending to be southern” and not actually lying. Lets call it “acting.” She does a lot of that.

  34. veritas says:

#28 See my next post….great minds think alike?

  35. Matt Jett says:

You must be one of those Torahnimals.

  36. jurassicpork says:

“To sum it all up: Nations poorer than us are offering help that we should’ve and could’ve been able to provide and were rebuffed. A nation led by, among other people, a man who’d helped take 52 of our people hostage in Tehran in 1979 wanted to open up diplomatic relations that could’ve saved countless people in Iraq, including our own, was ignored and even threatened. A nation like France offered to train Iraqi security forces and clowns like Curt Weldon responded by changing the name of French fries in the congressional cafeteria to Freedom fries.” – The Deadliest Sin.

  37. gummitch says:

    Nobody lied.

Except Bill about the blow job.

    Classic. It’s all Clinton’s fault.

It’s all the fault of bad intel from the CIA.

How old is that post, anyway?

  38. Matt Jett says:

#31. All those Dems you mentioned were afraid of looking “soft on terror” and they all should be ashamed. The extent and danger posed by Iraq’s WMDs is the lie propagated by the Bush Admin – like the b*llshit Uranium from Niger lie.

  39. Zooey says:

Despite the allegations, Bush didn’t lie about anything regarding Iraq.

    Dream on, mucky.

    Nobody lied.
Except Bill about the blow job.
And Hillary faking that southern accent when speaking to southern blacks. Maybe that’s just “pretending to be southern” and not actually lying. Lets call it “acting.” She does a lot of that.
    Comment by muckdog

None of which has a single thing to do with lying us into the war in Iraq. That’s 100% on your King.

  40. Denis Robert says:

Perle also stated verbatim to Tom Brokaw:
“that bastard Saddam Hussein was responsible for September 11″

Literally. It would be good if someone were able to fish out the video for this.

Note to muckdog: There was 0, nada, none, zilch evidence linking AlQaeda and Saddam in the days after 9/11. None at all. Nor was there ever any credible evidence of a nuclear program. That’s not bad intelligence; that’s someone determined to make something happen doing their damnedest to get it done.

  43. Matt Jett says:

    Whoooooooooshhhhhhhhh

That was the sound of facts going right over the top of mighty aphrodite’s head.

Not to mention that she is wrong about the real Pearl Harbor, as opposed to the “new Pearl Harbor” we are talking about.

Sure we do – you religious wingNUTS are here daily. We here all about how you want to torture, kill, oppress and Genocide others, and we’re quite aware of how dangerous you are. But to equate a few wingNUTS like yourself – of various religion, with the worldwide risk of an organized, well equipped and well funded “Axis-Powers” is ridiculously st*pid and childlike. Then again, you’re 24, what the h*ll do you know about WWII, and what was happening? We were spending almost half of our GDP fighting WWII at it’s peak, whereas we currently only use less that 5% of our GDP on our BLOATED military. Do you really think the threat is equal? If so, it’s about time we do what we did in WWII and DRAFT YOU and RAISE TAXES! Then again, we all know you don’t really BELIEVE the treat is to the US – but to ISRAEL, isn’t that right Goya?

But while we disagree ideologically, I think you are smart enough to “get it” – eventually! Comment by valiant venus — April 30, 2007 @ 7:44 pm

Actually the terror network is relatively small, and in fact insignificant compared to the German and Japanese terror network that spanned the world. Heck, even the KGB surpassed them.

Too bad your friend Ronuhld RayGun felt it was so important to get those “Freedom Fighters” trained on how to be terrorist subversives… We all should “thank” him – right?

#53 al Qaeda is as much threat to the world as Timothy McVeigh was to the world. I would suggest you stop playing the idiot, but not sure if you are playing.

BTW, over-looking the fact that “al Qaeda” in Iraq prior to invading Iraq were in the northern no-fly Kurdish controlled areas (i.e. outside of Saddam’s control) the actual terrorists who highjacked flights on 9/11 used AMerican housing, American food, American rental cars, American airliners, etc. So by your logic about “al Qaeda” seeking medical care in Iraq, we should be bombing the shit out of the continental United States.

So I am left wondering yet again, are you just playing at being a total moron, or is it for real?

How is my frightened out of her wits trollie doing tonight. You talk here like a 4 year old who is afraid of the big bad boogie man who you just know is under your bed. Its no wonder your hero is the Great and Wonderful Oz… er… Georgie. So big and strong as he struts across the carrier deck with his “oh so masculine cod piece” waving. Isn’t he orgasmic? Tee Hee?
Do you play that scene over and over when you are alone in bed doing… well never mind.

Pssst Valient… Can you hear it? We all can.

It goes Blappity, Blippity, Blappity, Blap.

How does it feel to be a punching bag? You must love it. You come back every day for more…Oh yeah they pay you to spew garbage and get beat up. Careful now this can lead to loss of what little mind you have left. Its called punchdrunk.

The sad part is that all this was absolutely predictable, in scope if not in precise detail, from the very beginning of this administration’s tenure. I suppose it had to happen for people to start waking up from the dream-state fog that drifted over this nation during the Reagan years.

Unfortunately, there isn’t all that much left to salvage. Real estate has been inflated beyond recovery, productive industry is all gone, and the transportation system is unsustainable. Instead of Reagan’s shining city on a hill, it looks more like a lean-to shitter with a bare light bulb.

This must be the light bulb that went off for my sweetie venus in the next thread. She said, “Progs! A light bulb just went off!”
Now she is in real deep shit.

Perle is another Neo-con piece of crap.

What is it with these people that they cannot understand that they have been found out and have lost all credibility? Do they really think that repeating lies will make them true? Or are they sociopaths in the clinical sense of the term? I tend to believe the latter. I think that the sociopath-in-chief has surrounded himself with people who are equally mentally disturbed. That would explain the total lack of moral compass, human compassion, and hubris.

These people need to be locked up for life lest they continue to harm innocent people. They are dangerously demented.

    Hi there muckie,
Me thinks you have been mucking around in too much doggie do… even for you.
Why don’t you begin your posts by actually addressing the person to whom you are talking? Hell, if I have to do it so should you.

Here is a hint for you mucky muck, wild statements thrown out there in the wind just spread your fragrance everywhere. Now, little poopie troller, if you have something worth saying… damn, there I go dreaming again… OK I’ll try again, do your homework before… no that won’t work either. Oh yeah, I get it now! Your mind is made up and don’t confuse you with facts. Your hilarious comment in #31 the proof. Proove to me you are not a neocon nutcase enabler. (If “enabler” is too big a word for you look it up.)

toodles…(sorry venus sweetie, I just looove that word of yours!)

When you bring up “Clinton lied,” it makes you sound even more crazy, since it’s irrelevant to the subject at hand.

    Rot in hell, mucky.

Actually, it only sounds *crazy* to you 22%er wingnuts. The majority of Americans believe the administration lied. As early as 2005, it had already reached 55% of Americans that believed this.

See muckdog, you’re the one that *sounds-crazy* defending bush. But being that you ARE CRAZY, it’s easily understood.

So that post of yours earlier today where you “claimed” that you don’t post anything *vulgar*? BAHAHAHA, yeah, sure you don’t – st*pid c*nt.

    You wingNUTS aren’t *good-religious-people*, you’re fanatical lunatics!

So if someone sh*t in your sacrament cup, before you took a drink, that’s not a *religious* insult? Well, you do like eating sh*t, considering your diet of daily talking points – so maybe that’s why you have such a high “threshold” for insults. Well actually, you’re a thin skinned little b*tch – but I always attributed that to the Anorexia…

Can someone please explain how lying about a blow job warrants impeachement and these crimes are ‘debated’?!
    Comment by Your Conscience — April 30, 2007 @ 6:31 pm

At least there’s no new blow job stories about Clinton.
TP is apparently trying to tell us necons want to invade Iraq after 9/11.
    Stop the presses.

  86. TSop says:

9/11 is the cornerstone of these criminals’ house of cards. At every opportunity, 9/11 should be discussed and the days after reviewed to hang these scumbags with their own words…lying liars. They sent the attack dogs after Rosie when she had the temerity to ask why WTC7 collapsed, hours after the towers did…that building wasn’t hit – but it did house FEMA and the SEC investigative bureau…Does anyone in this CSI watching nation believe that it wasn’t planned?

  87. Steve Holmes says:

9/11 was an inside job. The neocons planned it and carried it out. PNAC was their business plan and terms of reference.

  88. Parrotlover77 says:

Man it’s taken THIS LONG for news networks to air contradictory statements made years ago, instead of just nodding their heads and pretending the past never happened. This country is so corrupt. I can’t wait until we get a chance to clean house, as in, clean up the white house and all those silly righty senators up for re-election!

  89. josey says:

Prior to 9/11, several high-ranking members within the administration actively were adovacting going to war with Iraq. In an article about Colin Powell and his difficulties with the administration, TIME Magazine spent latter half of the article discussing how these individuals were pushing for war. Colin Powell is on the cover and the date of the magazine article is….. September 10, 2001.

As I read this article on September 10, 2001, I always believed that this administration used 9/11 merely as a means to sell a war with Iraq to the American public.

CNN: Perle tells The Weekly Standard he was in France that day and denies ever saying that to Tenet. Tenet says his dates may be off but insists the exchange happened. Here’s what Perle did tell CNN five days after 9/11.
