Number of secret warrants approved by the FISA court targeting people in the United States in 2006, a record high. The secret court “approved all but one of the government’s requests.”

I haven’t looked around the Web yet, but the Rightblogs I’m so sure will take this and SCREAM, saying that this justifies all the secret wiretaps, ignoring, of course, that those cases could have been brought before the court and weren’t – menaing they very likely fall into the category that the lonely one did here.

    Democrats/Liberals/Honest Citizens: 2, 176. Neocons/terrists/Corrupt Crooks (Republicans): 1

    Wait ’til ‘08!

  3. SpellCheck Police says:

    “secrety” court? Heh.

  4. Thom says:

The RightW-blogs will scream now that this justifies the secret wiretaps, ignoring of course that all of those cases could have been brought before the court – but weren’t. Meaning they likely belong in the “would have been denied” category.

But they’ll scream it anyway – just you wait.

I am freaking confused about commenting right now.

Repeal the Patriot Act. Stop Bush’s assault on the rights of US citizens.
I wonder how many of the 2176 were registered Democrats vs Republicans…….

Raven, didn’t you know you were # 1,009

  11. Zooey says:

2176 secret warrants against people in this country in one year.

How many of them were issued against American citizens?
I wonder if the people ever know they’ve been targeted?
Has anyone ever been charged — or do they just disappear?
    Why one rejection?

    I’m f*cking creeped out.

  12. Clyde the Ripper says:

With this record why does the stupid bastard insist on breaking the law by not getting the rubber stamp for all his bullshit spying?

Because he is a stupid bastard!

Actually he just kissed his own ass goodbye if the Dems have any balls. He just declared the Iraq war over due to lack of interest and funds. “You did a heckuva job troops but Harry and the Broad won’t let me and uncle Dick steal any more. Sorry!”

We all need to follow Bill Maher’s advice.
Email ourselves a copyof the Constitution every morning in the hope they will actually read it and see what the F*ck it says……

Thanks, RUCerious, and I thought it was just a couple of cats fighting under my window…

  16. ValiantVenusGrewFromUranus says:

That’s a lot of warrants – for how many arrests again? More republican efficiency at work.. They miss what’s in front of them, and spin their wheels on b*llsh*t when it isn’t. Jake*sses.

    Things going well?

  18. Raven says:

Zooey, you can rest easy, you were the one secret warrant that was denied.
(’Cause we all told them they had better not, or else…..)

Hey TP… article says 2005, you have a typo there.

So… 2000+ in 2005, and how many trials, and how many convictions? How many “events” have we been spared?

    Answers – none, none, none.

SSDD… nice to know the FIFSA court has the high “standards” to approve this many… makes me wonder what the criteria du jour is, for them govt to spy on you?

    F’ed up!

  22. benchmarks says:

Oh, that was actually 2005 wasn’t it?

But still impressive, wonder what 2006 was like? Probably more, just a wild guess…

That is a great idea! I am going to e-mail it to myself now with a subject line that will get their attention.

    Genius idea!

  28. david says:

I don’t get it. If there were double the number of FISA warrants in 2005 than there were in 2000, how many warrantless wiretaps were there in the dark years of 2002, 2003, and 2004. And will they ever be reviewed. One might assume that the heaviest terrorist activity would have been during those years. So, where are the arrests, the charges, the prosecutions???

  29. VerbalKint says:

So that would be about 2176 counts of law breaking. Minimum.

Next time your having a casual conversation with your granny, belt out a loud “Islamic Jihad” into the phone, then continue your mundane conversation. I get a kick out of hoping some lowlife at the NSA will waste their time on my harmless call. Just don’t do it too often.

Hey, I got nothing to hide but a little cannabis.

    “Come and get me, bitches!!!!”

  32. Shannon says:

2,176? I bet 5 million of those got lost too. :)

  33. am says:

but, but….FISA is so beaurocratic…and it takes too long….and we can’t stop the terrorists if we can’t spy without a warrant….oh…wait….never mind.

  34. Topper Harley says:

Face it. The patriot act is only used for one reason people. So the neocons can spy on their political opponents. It’s that simple.

  35. dharma says:

This, with the fact that there are approximately 93 US Attorneys taking orders from Bush and Rove to prosecute certain people (Democrats) makes me very upset. Grover Norquist said their plan was to destroy the Democrat party and this is yet another step along the way. So, if you’ve ever had a Democratic thought, watch out because you could be “Wellstoned”, too.
