The New York Times notes that today, May 1, is Law Day.
In keeping with tradition, President Bush has issued a proclamation inviting Americans today to “celebrate the Constitution and the laws that protect our rights and liberties.” It rings more than a little hollow, though, as he continues to trample on civil liberties in the war on terror, and stands by an attorney general who has politicized the Justice Department to a shocking degree.
The less committed a president is to the law, the more need there is for Law Day, which makes it a holiday whose time has come.
Alberto Gonzales will be at a Constitution shredding party in honor of law say.

May 1st, 2007 at 12:29 amYes, let’s do celebrate and shed a few tears for the laws that used to protect us, the rights now denied us, the country we used to believe in.
This is more blatent posturing and flag waving. It’ll sound good to the wingers, but it’s all hollow. F bush.

May 1st, 2007 at 12:40 amMay Day, a very important day in Communist and Socialist countries. Oh the irony.
May 1st, 2007 at 12:42 amPerhaps he will issue a signing statement in honor of this day too!
May 1st, 2007 at 12:50 amIf the old memory serves, May Day (The first of the month) in medieval England, Egypt, and as I recall India, was celebrated, typically, by a group of young girls dancing merrily in and out with ribbons from an edifice appropriately called the Maypole. The object was the collective braiding of the ribbons directed by the young girls into a decorative pattern around the Maypole. As I recall the first day of May also has political importance for the Communists and Socialists dating from 1990 (give or take a year) as it was designated a holiday for the workers much like our Labor day Holiday. It is only fitting that the bushco would attempt to capitalize upon the day by making it a “Law” day: one that they routinely break. I am too old and tired to draw the similes but it is enough to say that the bushco has raped all the young girls, shoved the Maypole up our collective ass, erased any hopes of any government except tyrannical despotism, and has no idea of what decent hard labor for a fair wage amounts to. My pontification for the Month! Actually the 15th marks another milestone in my life and I won again: Living 74; Dead 0. I just hope I can keep adding to the plus side long enough to see DUHbya accumulating some dead numbers.

May 1st, 2007 at 12:51 amIf Bush even owns a copy of the Constitution it’s only used to keep track of the parts he’s already crossed off like the hit list of a serial killer.
May 1st, 2007 at 12:55 am“…And I’m asking you, my fellow Amercians, to celebrate the Constitution and the laws that protect our rights and liberties by joining together as one, impeaching my monkey butt, and throwing me behind bars where I truly deserve to be…”
… a quote from the one speech George Bush really should give but will never have the moral courage or decency to make.
May 1st, 2007 at 12:56 amIt would be more appropriate to move this to May 28, to coincide with Memorial Day.
Please take some time tomorrow for a moment of silence in rememberance of the United States Constitution, September 17, 1787 – October 17, 2006; and the Bill of Rights, December 15, 1791 – October 17, 2006.
May 1st, 2007 at 12:58 amSoon it will be Christian Law Day.

May 1st, 2007 at 1:11 amThe first day of May has at leasr two other notable celebrations:
The first being a celebration of merryment wherein young girls danced about the Maypole. The second being the Socialist and Communist celebration akin to our Labor Day. I elaborated upon the two subjects and apparently awakened the TP filters. Pee upon the filters. Just draw your own conclusions: consider the most valued asset of the young girls methphorically stripped by the bushco and the parallels of the depression our own labor movement by bushco.
If this doesn’t make it through the filters I am just going to go play with the kid’s Granny. Night All.
May 1st, 2007 at 1:15 amIf BushCo could just step back, as an American citizen, and not as POTUS, and view what has happened in the last six years and pretend that a Democrat President caused these changes, what would his reaction be?
May 1 is both Law Day and Mission Accomplished Day (both NOT!). He truly doesn’t see the irony in his “Proclamation”.
Theresa
May 1st, 2007 at 1:19 amMay Day is a Midevial English, Egyptian. and India(n) holiday.
May Day is the Communist equavalent to our Labor Day.
TP Filters: two. Clyde: zero. Attempted: three.
And I used my Funckin Wagnals for reference!
May 1st, 2007 at 1:23 amThat’s his problem Theresa.
Bush is incapable of taking that step back for a clearer view.
Not as citizen, not as POTUS and not as a human being.
He places himself above all three.
May 1st, 2007 at 1:28 amI surrender, Dear.
Wake me up tomorrow after the impeachment vote.
I have empathy for all of you who have seen your comments go bye-bye!
Let us insist upon a ” Comment Deleted” so at least we made it to the filter bank.
May 1st, 2007 at 1:31 amPresident Bush on dictatorship:
“A dictatorship would be a heck of a lot easier, there’s no question about it.”
- President George W. Bush, July 26, 2001.
“If this were a dictatorship, it’d be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I’m the dictator.”
- President-elect George W. Bush, December 18, 2000.
“You don’t get everything you want. A dictatorship would be a lot easier.”
May 1st, 2007 at 1:40 am- Texas Governor George W. Bush, July 1998.
#15, mparker. I agree. He will be an American citizen again in 2009, subject to the precendent he’s set, without the Office of The President to protect him (hopefully earlier). He, and his family, will reap what he sows.

May 1st, 2007 at 1:46 amHe’ll also be in Paraguay.
May 1st, 2007 at 2:20 amNO today is May Day the international day for labor rights, but Bush wants to turn it into Fascism day.
May 1st, 2007 at 2:24 amNO today is May Day
Yes, but blame Dwight Eisenhower and the “chicken littles” of his administration who decided to co-opt it (and reinsert “Under God” into the Pledge of Allegiance) in order to contrast us with the “godless” Soviets.
Title 36, Section 113 does codify it as a “national holiday” – just like we have National Maritime Day (May 22), Citizenship Day (September 17), America Recycles Day (November 15) and Wright Brothers Day (December 17).
May 1st, 2007 at 2:34 amHe’ll also be in Paraguay.
Damn, I forgot about the land deal.

May 1st, 2007 at 6:47 amKurds To Oppose Draft Oil Law
In a surprise move, Kurdish lawmakers have announced that they plan to oppose Iraq’s controversial US-backed oil law.
Back in February, the Kurds had agreed to support the draft law, which has been heavily criticised as giving too much control to foreign oil companies.
Oil Minister Hussain al-Shahristani had predicted the draft law would be approved by parliament in April, but it has yet to be debated.
Kurds hold 58 of the 275 parliament seats _ not enough to defeat the measure on their own. But Kurdish objections could delay passage of the bill, whose ratification has been strongly urged by the White House.
But Kurdish spokesman Khalid Saleh has said: “We are not going to support†the provisions in the bill. Some Sunni legislators have also raised now objections, saying the oil law would give foreign oil companies too much power.
So the draft oil law could be in for a tough time before it becomes law. They will be sweating in Houston.

May 1st, 2007 at 7:20 amVenezuela exits IMF and World Bank
“I want to formalise our exit from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund,” Chavez said, issuing an order for Rodrigo Cabezas, Venezuela’s finance minister, to begin proceedings to withdraw from the organisations.
“We are going to withdraw before they go and rob us.”
May 1st, 2007 at 7:31 amLaw Day my fat spotted arse. Today is Labor Day.

Chavez & World Bank:[ We are going to withdraw before they go and rob us].

May 1st, 2007 at 8:39 amBreaking News…
Bush just added a Signing Statement to the Constitution…”F*ck This!”
May 1st, 2007 at 8:53 ama.k.a. “Happy Trampling on the Constitution and Civil Liberties Day”
May 1st, 2007 at 8:53 amA bit off topic but just released today from AP regarding Jeb Bush’s integrity (or lack thereof!): Army Corp of Engineers being investigated for contract with MWI (Moving Water Industries of Deerfield Beach, FL) where Jebbie marketed the bogus pumps in the 80’s and they somehow “won” the contract for Katrina Cleanup with pumps that didn’t work. Where does Jebbie fit into this scheme? Evidently, the bid contract description was verbatim from the description of these pumps on the literature of MWI….how interesting! No doubt that Jebbie has his fingerprints ALL over this one. Perhaps this will be Jeb’s “waterloo” and one final nail in his campaign coffin for president, if and when that might occur.
Once the people demand a thorough investigation into this and Jeb’s connections to this company (still on it’s payroll by any chance, Jeb?) then we can move to the next nail in his coffin: The “stolen” election of 2000 in Florida and how Jeb was intimately involved….along with Katherine Harris. Both of these individuals seriously need to be investigated – and soon!
May 1st, 2007 at 9:03 amBecause standing up for the right’s of workers to organize, the right to safe working conditions and the right not to be fired without cause has to be a communist plot it’s also Loyalty Day in Amurka
May 1st, 2007 at 9:03 amI go one step further with the Bush Cabal: They didn’t just trample the constitution of this country; they trampled it and then used it as toilet paper!
May 1st, 2007 at 9:04 amPerhaps TP could celebrate law day by finally acknowledging the existence of impeachment articles against Dick Cheney.
May 1st, 2007 at 9:08 amSo Happy Law Day is really April Fools Day for GW?
May 1st, 2007 at 9:11 am26 – thanks for the post. You know that oil contract is the #1 Priority for the Bush Administration.
From an earlier thread:
SEC. RICE: I will tell you this, the benchmark that I’m looking at — the oil law is important, the political process is extraordinary important…
Notice what Rice put first: The Oil Law. THAT’S THE PRIZE Bush&Co. are after. That’s what our kids are dying for. The Oil Law.
May 1st, 2007 at 9:28 amYou’d think on LAW DAY, ThinkProgress would finally have a thread on the Articles of Impeachment Kucinich filed against Dick Cheney. This is remeniscent of the Military Commissions Act, where we had to keep hounding ThinkProgress to put up a thread.
Check this out:

May 1st, 2007 at 9:36 amThe boy-king has issued a proclamation!
May 1st, 2007 at 9:36 amWill he have a Constitution shredding event in the Rose Garden to commemorate his personal efforts to destroy that “goddam piece of paper” being waved in front of him?
Our president, who undermines, reinterprets and defies the tenets of our Constitution, has invited Americans to celebrate it.
This is becoming more absurd every day.
that’s ok, I wasn’t using those civil liberties anyway.
May 1st, 2007 at 9:43 amYour Constitution – use it or lose it…
May 1st, 2007 at 10:01 amPerhaps TP could celebrate law day by finally acknowledging the existence of impeachment articles against Dick Cheney.
Comment by Gary Kleppe
You mean the articles that someone posts at least once in every damn thread here? Is it possible that the siteowners think y’all have this covered by now?
May 1st, 2007 at 10:05 amLaw day? From law breakers? How ironic.
Hating the Repukian talking points daily
May 1st, 2007 at 10:58 amIt is unbelievable that after more than a century the government continues to use the same tactics as when Labour Day was shifted to September to avoid the recurrence of the Chicago’s Haymarket riots. Maybe it should be a day to figure out how society rethinks activism in the new era.
May 1st, 2007 at 12:42 pmMay 1st is BELTANE!!!! It goes back thousands of years and is a joyous celebration of fertility and abundance. Many people, male and female still celebrate it all over the world. I wish various governments would keep their cotton-picking hands OFF IT!!
May 1st, 2007 at 1:15 pmThank You Abigail Winston, I’m quite slow today….Had planned to add a happy Beltane to all on every thread but got to busy with the tree hugging, flower planting and bashing troll’s on other thread’s..
It pisses me off no end that every sabbot or special occasion get’s taken over by some other relegion or fundie group like the bush cabal…This is so typical and has been going on for thousand’s of year’s…Well I wish you all a Happy Beltane any way….Knowing full well it is nearly imposible to have a good day when people are dieing and because of bush our world, constitution and all people are less safe…Blessings
